Generic Fae Profile Autumn (insert pic here) General InfoName -- Aliases/Nicknames (if any) -- AutumnGender -- FemaleAge -- Young for a dryad, but has observed generations of mankindProfession -- Observer of humans and guardian of nature. Because of her nature magic she has often been welcomed as a gardener/groundskeeper among humansCurrently Lives -- A nomadic lifestylePhysical AttributesBody Size/Features -- Tall and slender, in a stick-like fashion. She is curvy enough to be definitively female, but not obviously so.Head/Facial Features -- Her long hair changes with the season just as her leaves do. In the spring a yellowed green, in the summer a vibrant green, in the fall a bright orangish pink. In the winter her hair is brown matching the bark of her tree form. Just as her leaves do not all turn at once neither do the strands of her hair. In the autumn as it shifts towards pink there are often yellows, and oranges mixed in with the greens and pinks. Her eyes are a vivid green that match the shade of her hair in the summer. Her skin is a pale fleshy pink.Typical Clothing/Dress -- Her preference is to wear none, but most of her time is spent around people and she has accepted that as inappropriate in human culture. She prefers clothing with a loose fit. She likes dresses and skirts that drape in soft (and when appropriate sheer) fabrics. I most easily picture her in gypsy style clothing; an off the shoulder shirt (though not in a style gathered with elastic) and a loose skirt with a triangular sash at her waist. She loves the look of ball gowns and sometimes daydreams about dancing in them, but the thought of wearing so many layers of fabric induce feelings of suffocation. Most of her clothes are in creams and browns, with accents of green. Though she adores the bright colors of autumn she is not comfortable in such vibrant colors. Even in the winter her clothing is minimal, and regardless of season she is loath to wear shoes.Weaponry -- Quarter Staff— a remnant of her mother’s tree. (See her beginning section for more info.)Notable Proficiencies/Talents -- Speaking with plants, communicating with some wild animals (she does not have the ability to communicate with domestic animals). Nature magic. Given the opportunity to revert to her tree form some self-healing abilities. Can turn her skin to bark.Other Physical Notes -- She can sleep as humans do and she can eat human food (vegan diet— she cannot digest meat), but she does not need to eat and sleep the way that humans do. Instead she needs to rest and gain nourishment in her tree form. She prefers to rest on a cycle much like a human’s sleep cycle, but she can push herself for potentially weeks without resting in her tree form as long as the equivalent rest is gained prior to or immediately following that time period. Her tree form is that of a maple. To some she may smell woodsy even when in human form.PersonalityStrengths -- Going unnoticed, not in a stealthy sneaky way, but in an unobtrusive way. Putting people at ease.Weaknesses -- Does not like the feel of metal it doesn’t harm her, but it makes her uncomfortable.Likes -- Humans, despite her shyness around them she is fascinated with them and can literally sit and watch them for hours.Dislikes -- Crimes against nature.Dreams/Life Goals -- To fly. Companionship—that she does not realize it as such does not make her yearning for it any less real (it's kind of a foreign concept for a dryad).Hobbies -- People watching, learningTake on Dragons -- Dragons are both fascinating and frightening creatures; she longs to be bound and able to fly (literally leaving behind her roots) but at the same time she is fearful that she will not be strong enough to bind a dragon against his/her will. She knows of other dryads who have done it, but she is doubtful of her own abilities. Secretly she wishes not to merely be bound, but to discover something just short of a rebirth. She does not want to literally become one with a dragon, but there is a draw to her for that level of compatibility.Overall Personality -- Terribly shy. She is soft-spoken and gentle, unless her wrath is kindled (most likely for some crime against nature). If she feels at ease she can become quite playful. She tends more towards thoughtful and serious though. Deeply compassionate. She has a general feel of innocence about her and may even seem naïve, but she has both seen and experienced much in her life time.Background/HistoryMy Beginning Was In -- A man stood at the foot of an aged maple tree and buried his young wife and newborn daughter. Something had gone wrong in the birthing and he had lost them both. Maple, the dryad who resided in the tree felt an ache in her heart as day after day the man returned to water her tree’s soil with his tears. As the months passed the man’s tears lessened but his sorrow did not.
One day as the man sat with his back pressed against the trunk of her tree and cried Maple revealed herself to the human. “Your tears have watered my roots, and I grow sad,” she told him, “I wish you to shed no more sorrow here.”
The man apologized and promised not to return, but in his absence Maple found that she missed him. She left the safety of her tree to look for the man, but was unable to find him. Each day her search grew more desperate as she journeyed father and father from her tree until at last she found him but her journey had taken her too far from the sustenance of her tree and she died before reaching him, but not before she had caught his attention.
The man recognized her and brought her back to bury her as he had his young wife and newborn child. Maple’s sisters looked on in horror as the man dug a grave until one was finally brave enough to step forward and explain his error to him. The man kindly relinquished her to her sisters’ care and turned to leave.
Before the man got far another sister stepped forward. “It is a rare thing indeed for a mortal to capture the heart of a dryad so that she is willing to leave her tree for him,” she offered “please…” The man watched as Maple was reunited with her tree. The same dryad who returned Maple to rest inside her tree brought forth a staff. “From her heart,” was all that she said as she offered the man the staff.
The man wept and his tears once again watered the earth at Maple’s feet. This time he wept not for his loss, but for hers and for the kindness her sisters had shown him Though he knew the fae well enough to know that the gesture was not so kind as it seemed. He would now have to care for and protect this gift.
As is the order of nature loss begets life and a new tree grew where the man’s tears had fallen. That her mother’s heart had been given to a mortal who had carried it beyond the realm of the fae bestowed her with wanderlust and a desire for true companionship not understood by her sister dryads.
((Still working out the part that means she's both a tree and a human.))The Fae Court I Belong To -- By her choice she left her grove and the protection of her kind to wander the lands of humans.General History -- The first sixty or so years of her life were spent with her sister dryads in her forest. She learned to commune with nature, primarily learning how to care for the abundant and varied plant life of her forest. As she grew she discovered that she had an uncommon gift among her kind, and that she was able to empathically communicate with the animals in her forest as well. Her sisters taught her not only how to work, but to play and to this day some of her fondest memories are of the moonlight revels that marked the turning of the seasons.
As the years passed she could feel more and more keenly the absence of her mother’s heart. That her sisters did not feel it she did not understand. She felt it outside the boundaries that she could safely wander. But it called to her and she longed to find it.
Then one day as she was tending to the forest Autumn turned to find a woman standing before her. That she had had, in her own forest, no sense of this woman’s approach concerned Autumn deeply until the woman spoke invoking in her a deep sense of peace. “In my wisdom I offer you a chance to discover what your heart yearns for. This path will bring you both pleasure and pain beyond your imagination now so I wish you to consider carefully. I will return in three days time for your answer.”
“What do you mean Autumn asked,” but as the first word left her lips the woman vanished and Autumn was left wondering if she had imagined it save that the words would not leave her mind. The message had been so cryptic how was she to decide? What did her heart yearn for? She could think of nothing more enjoyable than to care for her forest, but even as she thought that she felt a longing to reclaim her mother’s heart. Was that what the woman was talking about?
When the woman returned Autumn still had not reached a decision, how could she? “Your thoughts are troubled, but your heart has decided,” the woman smiled on her kindly. “Be at peace,” and again she was gone.
That night Autumn returned to her tree to rest. When she woke the next day and stepped out of her tree it vanished; she was consumed by panic. “Be at peace,” the woman’s words came back to her mind with great comfort. As the panic faded Autumn once again regained her sense of her tree. It was insider her now and she stood in dumbfounded awe. She would at last be able to find her mother’s heart. She wept overwhelmed with joy and awe and an odd mix of feelings unfamiliar to her.
Once the tears subsided she found her eldest sister and spoke to her at length of the events that had transpired. “Sweet sister,” she held Autumn to her affectionately, “I cannot council you against your heart. It seems that you are destined to leave this forest. You have felt more keenly than I, or any of our sisters, your mother sister’s absence. Know that should you leave you will be welcome here should you desire to return, but know also that the world of man is far different from our own and it will change you.” A tear trailed down her cheek.
The two sisters clung to each other. “Thank you,” Autumn whispered to her sister, “I will miss you deeply.”
She left the forest and sought out her mother’s heart. Her own heart led her on a long journey far from her forest. At last she found her mother’s heart in the possession of an old gray-haired man. He was glad to know that the dryad he had, in his mind, named Maple (after her tree) had a daughter, who not only lived, but who was not bound to the same fate as her mother; she had found a way to merge herself with her tree. A way that she could not recall. He handed over the staff glad to be rid of the burden that protecting it had caused him to bear. She had come to him in the autumn when her hair had been streaked with the colors of fall and her “father” named her Autumn.
Due to her wanderlust and yearning for companionship Autumn found herself more at home amongst humans than she did her own kind and did not return to her forest, but instead wanders the world of men. She has been shown both cruelty and compassion in her travels. She has never stayed anywhere longer than a season, as the colors in her leaves and hair shift so does her path.

RP is in the Dragon-Bound shop thread, but I wanted to keep an archive of it here.
Some work-out info this post then RP starting in the next post. ^_^page 2139 Kiddo Seanchain Kiddo Seanchain Seist held out his hand, utterly distracted for a moment by the spectrum. He held his wrist steady, allowing it to perch there on his forearm and take the stone from his upturned palm. The priest was completely enchanted by the creature. He'd never been this close to a spectrum before. Surely Bazil was blessed, whether he recognized it or not. It happened. "It would not be a distraction from my duty, Bazil," Seist replied absently, "I am a priest of Dues and Frain - keeping my own in check is what I do. Should I not, I would not be worthy of the divine magic of the twin deities. I'll see if I can find you some copies of what exists on spectrum once I return to my homeland. There's a few libraries I know of that might be persuaded to make a copy and you seem like quite the reader. It's truly impressive, to be honest. But yes, sadly, I have let myself get sidetracked..." The priest allowed the spectrum to fly off again and then stood, sighing reluctantly at the prospect of leaving the creature behind. But perhaps it would follow them - perhaps it was that attached to Bazil by now. "Lead on," Seist told the man, "Let's go meet some dragons." Jayara Bazil spread the fingers of his hand and the lights scattered to all the strewn about stones. The spectrum flitted about from stone to stone collecting and stuffing them under the blanket of the bed while Bazil gathered the few strays. "Yes, back to the dragon quarters," Bazil confirmed, putting a few of the stones away in the bag and dousing the lights of the rest before they were to leave, the spectrum not terribly pleased about that and trying to make it apparent by tugging on Bazil's hood. ((Shall we leave it open for others or npc a rider or two?)) When we last saw Seist and Bazil... Jenn, this is where we left off for another player. We're in Downswood, which is a larger town in the Borderlands. The fae forest is southeast of it, not too far off. You have to pass through dragon territory, but it's a pretty narrow stretch between the two. Bazil and Seist are on foot. Bazil is blind, but he has a hood so it's not obvious. Seist is in full "I am totally a rich noble" and is also wearing a pendant that marks him as a priest. page 2139 Jenannen So there is another character being waited on already?
So this would work for my idea of Autumn being attacked? (Seist to the resuce!) If we can get them to be not in town it would give me a chance to play w/ some of her magic. biggrin If we're in town she'll be more vulnerable.
Is it fall by any chance? I had hoped that Autumn's hair would be mostly pink when she first met Seist for some reason.
What is this spectrum thingy? page 2139 Kiddo Seanchain No, we're not waiting on anyone. Just for anyone who wanted to jump in at this point. Let me give you a bit more backstory and I'll let you see if it'll work. Right now there's a war between the fae in the southern forest. The locals are aware that something is going on, but they're hazy on the details - only that it involves fae and as a result, the dragons in the area are moving outward into human territory and being more aggressive in taking Bounds. So there's some unhappiness towards the dragons and unhappiness towards the fae for screwing everything up. The season is summer. War is a bit harder to wage in the autumn/winter months. A spectrum is a sort of familiar. They're these little humanoid sprite things. This one will be hiding as it's very shy and only came out because they were at Bazil's house and he coaxed it out. page 2140 Jenannen Well I'm still not sure what's goign on, but that sounds like the perfect setting for a fae in town to be attacked. I wonder what reason she would have for being there in the first place.
Well then she's got green hair and probably had on a light cloak that she had been wearing to try and hide it. page 2140 Jenannen In the wild I picture her as capable of defending herself. Here, in town, her primary defense would be her abilities with her quarterstaff.
Your world I'm entering so if you don't mind setting something up for me/her I'd appreciate it. I can try to come up with something on my own if you prefer though. page 2140 Kiddo Seanchain How about you do an intro post and I'll play the NPCs harassing her?

page 2141 Jenannen It was getting late and Autumn wanted to make her way out of town for the night to a safe plot of fertile earth so that she could rest. Tensions in this city were high and she asked herself again why she stayed. Because it makes the flowers happy, she smiled to herself.
She was happiest when she had land as well as plants to work and tend to, but here in Downswood she had risked the opportunity to observe people more closely. Mostly she tended to the plants in a large greenhouse, but there were times when she tended the floral shop and she had even tried her hand at flower arrangements. While the owner had applauded her work Autumn did not like working with the dying flowers. She wondered that humans could not see the death already claiming the flowers in such arrangements and considered them beautiful.
That the air was warm made her wish all the more that it was not summer and that her hair was not a vibrant green; so clearly marking her as other than human. Reluctantly she donned a light cloak in a deep brown color that reminded her of the soil the flowers here grew in. She left the shop and made her way to the nearest path out of town. page 2142 Kiddo Seanchain Autumn was followed as she left the shop. Two men slipped off the wall they had been leaning on as she walked down the street and trailed behind a safe distance. As she wove her way through the streets of Downswood they slipped every closer, until one man came up on either side of the woman. One took her upper arm, his grip tight, and pulled her along to keep her walking as if nothing had happened. "Come with us, fae," he said lowly, "We have business with you." page 2142 Jenannen Lost in her thoughts Autumn had been completely oblivious to the men as they approached. They knew she was fae. A knot formed in her stomach and her pulse quickened. It didn’t have to mean trouble, did it? She didn’t want trouble, she just wanted to care for her plants and watch the people. She gripped her staff tightly for courage. “What business?” she asked hoping against hope that it was good and that her voice had not been as pale as it had sounded in her ears. For the time she kept step with the man who gripped her arm. page 2142 Kiddo Seanchain The men turned slightly, steering her towards one of the smaller streets. It ran parallel to the Dragon Quarter and was poorly traversed during the day, as it had been in disrepair for several years now and carts chose to detour around it. Foot traffic was even light and it was known to be a place where Lahmear's light shone thinly. One made to take her staff from her. "We'll discuss that in private," the man replied firmly. They were clearly not wanting to reveal their intentions until her chances of getting away were slimmer. ((Lahmear being the sun god of justice and law - it's another way of saying 'bad part of town.' That's the last post from me for tonight, I need to get to bed)) page 2142 Jenannen As the men steered her in the direction of the Dragon Quarter Autumn had to admit to herself that their business with her was probably not well intentioned. That they were heading deeper into the city and not out of it, where she wanted to be, also did not bode well for her. She longed to be in nature where she could tangle them in plants or soften the earth beneath their feet or call a wild animal to her aid. She realized that her best chance at coming out of this “business” unscathed was to get out now.
She reached that conclusion just as one of the men reached for her staff. That she noticed. It was enough to vanquish her hesitance; no one but her touched her staff. No one! She swung her staff first at the man who moved to take it from her and rapidly swung the other end at the man who gripped her arm. Her movements were skillful, but lacking in strength. She hoped it would be enough to free her from their grasp so that she could run for it. Whether or not she could out run them she didn’t know, but it seemed a better option than to try and fight them both off. page 2143 Kiddo Seanchain Both men darted back, just enough to get out of range. One caught the hem of her cloak as he did, pulling on it hard enough either throw her to the ground or tear it free. The other dropped his hand to his waist and there was a flash of metal - briefly - and then it was gone, hidden in the folds of his own cloak. But it had caught the light just long enough. He had a blade of some sorts, and was stepping forwards into her guard, trying to put them too close for her to use her stave effectively.

page 2143 Jenannen As they moved back she made to run but her cloak caught at her throat and she fell backwards onto the ground. She grasped the end of the bow tie and tugged to undo it. She missed the flash of metal as she attempted to put space between herself and her attackers with a roll.
“Help!” She screamed out uncertain if anyone would hear her cry or if it would avail her. With that cry she looked to gauge if she could get her feet under her or if it would be better to stay down for the time.((Totally out of my depth with the fighting stuff so if you have any suggestions I'd love to use this as an opportunity to learn a bit.)) page 2143 Kiddo Seanchain The man dove after her, catching up with her at the end of her roll. His hand slammed the stave to the ground, pinning it there, and his free hand revealed the weapon he held - a long knife, meant for fighting. He held it forwards, just to her side with the point angled in. Should she attempt to flee further, he would be able to drive it into at least a leg. The other man was hurrying to catch up, throwing the cloak aside onto the ground. "Fae!" he cried, loud enough for the handful of bystanders to hear, "I knew it! You bring the troubles of your own kind to our cities now?" And like that, no one made a move to help Autumn. ----------------------------------------------- Further up the street, Seist paused in his step, one hand plucking at Bazil's sleeve. "Did you just hear a shout?" he said, "Down that way." ((a good rule with fighting is ignore every single movie except Lord of the Rings and bits of 300. Is there something more specific you want advice on? I'm not so good at general advice.)) page 2144 Jenannen As the man’s hand pinned her staff to the ground she wondered if the smart thing to do would be to let go of it and try to run but she could not bring herself to part with it.
As the man revealed his knife Autumn’s skin turned to bark as an automatic response to the threat. She could have theoretically fought it back, but she saw no reason to do so at this point. The change made her less vulnerable to his blade and her green hair was clearly visible seeing as how she had already shed her cloak.‘I am not the one bringing trouble to you cities’ she wanted to spit at him, but the words would not form on her lips. Instead she settled for an attempt to elbow him in the face.((Just if you have any suggestions for something that would have been a better move or if I do something that doesn't work or whatever.)) page 2144 Jayara Bazil paused in his stiff fashion. "Yes. How about you take the direct route while I take another? If we should be parted, we can meet back up at your reservation in the dragon quarter." Hawkers' calls and brief bellowing was a daily thing here, but casual this was not. There were more voices. Possibly a mob. Guards were always slow to these things the closer they got to where the 'human' and 'dragon' portions of the city met. Already pointed toward another alleyway farther down the street, Bazil held his quarterstaff close as he moved before disappearing around a corner. page 2144 Kiddo Seanchain Seist made careful note of where Bazil was heading off for. He wasn't quite sure what the man's intentions were, but he was not one to simply continue on his way and be done with it. Bazil's 'sight' was uncanny enough that the priest did not want to try and follow him directly. However, there were other ways around the city. Seist put his hand on his sword hilt to keep it from bouncing and tangling in his legs and broke into an easy lope. He ran parallel to where he had thought the cry had come from and where Bazil had headed for, than cut down another street that hopefully intersected with the commotion. He'd arrive late to whatever was happening, but that just might work. If Bazil needed backup, it was coming, and if things were already settled, he could breeze right in and smooth everything over with his priestly rank. ----------------------- Autumn's elbow connected with the man's nose and there was a sickening crunch of bone. He reeled and for a moment his grip loosened on the stave, but his dagger was unwavering. He had the look of someone that had his nose broken before but the pain was still enough to disorient him for a few seconds. Behind the two, the second man had a sword drawn and was quickly approaching to Autumn's right, talking loudly to deter bystanders as he did. "Fae spy!" he called out, "From the forest, no doubt. The Baroness will surely pay a handsome bounty for this catch." ((Okay, I wouldn't have rolled then. Fighting from the ground can be a benefit in some cases as it puts you in a stronger defensive position, but you lose so much mobility that it's not worth it. The only situations I've seen it work is either in a tight melee where there's not much room for anyone to maneuver and you have people on either side to protect your flanks, or in single combat where 'corkscrewing' is prohibited. Corkscrewing is what we call where the person circles and attacks you from behind. But if you've got protection from being flanked like that, the ground can be incredibly safe, especially for smaller women. I've been asked to take a knee on battles before just because I can guard low and protect our men from getting legged, as well as be a solid rock that won't be pushed back in a charge. And a bit of DB backstory... the Baroness is Baroness Yvette, who is the most powerful person in the Borderlands. She sponsors dragon hunters and is gathering up... interesting people and dragons. A couple of eggs were her first targets and then Jayara's character died because of her. Not someone that would be friendly to the fae)) ((That’s where my character is at a disadvantage with me as her player. I don’t picture her as inexperienced; whereas I’ve never even been in a fist fight. She's not a fighter, but I picture her as having spent time training with her staff after her first bit of trouble over being Fae in the human lands. Do you have any suggestions for her now with that in mind?))((No problem, I can adjust accordingly then. Well, right now you've got an advantage since they don't want to kill her and are holding back. So get the staff free and slam that sucker into his collarbone. There probably won't be much leverage but collarbones are fragile. I don't wear much metal armor, but my gorget is metal because it protects my neck and collarbones. That and hands are pretty vulnerable.)) page 2146 Jenannen As her elbow connected with the man’s nose she prized free her staff and swung as hard as she could for his collarbone. She moved to regain her feet before the man’s companion could rejoin them.
“Baroness, pay, catch,” those words caught her attention. She had never involved herself in human politics but she did understand it was a title, and she knew, too, how motivated by greed men could be. Catch, not corpse… alive? “Nooo!” She screamed hoping to silence the growing panic. She could not be caged it would kill her. If she was dead either way she would prefer to go down fighting.

page 2148 Jayara As the sounds of a scuffle continued, Bazil navigated the smaller streets. While there were fewer people to work around, there was also less space to accompany everyone as he weaved toward the latest scream. Finally, reaching an area where streetwalkers were actively avoiding, Bazil coasted along the fringe for position. As he circled casually with the rest of the bystanders, his staff tapping along as a walking stick, he sought out the truth of the matter. Was this just a baseless inquisition or, regarding what Seist had told him earlier, was there a merit of truth to the rogues' shouting? The woman held in the middle of it all was certainly not human he could tell. Far too much wild magic. It was magic that was unique enough that he'd already recognized her as someone he had noticed occasionally around the town for a time now. But was she simply a new resident or was there another story? Lifting a free hand beneath the emerald hood that draped his face, he made some sort of adjustment. ((I'll give it another post for Autumn/rogues as it will take a moment of time for Bazil to get there and assess. Jen, I'm assuming a little here from reading the profile for Autumn, but is it safe to say she's been around the city a few years? I'm playing off it if so.))page 2150 Kiddo Seanchain The man was forced to completely release his grip on her to block, instinctively jerking back and bringing both arms up to block. The stave landed hard on his wrist and part of his hand and the man's face went white with pain. The only sound he made was a strained grunt, but he did not try to continue the attack, instead he moved backwards, getting out of range. His right arm fell to his side, useless, and he transferred the knife to his off-hand. The second man darted forwards at this, approaching from Autumn's blind spot, and aimed low with a slash towards her thigh. page 2151 Jenannen Better him than you, she reminded herself. That knowledge didn’t make her feel any better about hurting the man. She grimaced at the result of her attack, but was thankful that he had fallen back. That he had transferred his dagger to his off-hand she hoped meant nothing more than that he was still on guard, but she did not dismiss likelihood that he intended to continue the attack.
The pro and con of her barkskin was that in the heat of battle opponents often failed to take into account that they were no longer attacking flesh. The second man’s blade bounced off her thigh leaving a gash that she knew would be uncomfortable for her when she reverted to flesh, but for the time there was no visible sign that he had wounded her.((*mumbles about headaches* Let me know if the reply makes sense please.)) page 2151 Jayara Bazil drew a finger across his chin. The three dancing around in the street were at this point more about taking each other down regardless of injury at this point, ignoring any bystanders that might get caught in the fray. It wouldn't due for this to get any bigger of a problem than it already had become regardless of who was in the right at this point. Best stop it now and keep anyone else from joining in and turning it into a lynch mob. Passive ignorance only lasted so long... until someone in the crowd gets hit. "Call your friend off," Bazil directed, finally stepping forward toward the individual who had stepped back carrying knife in his off-hand, keeping easily out of swipe range and manuring toward the fellow's limp side. "This will end nowhere but the guardhouse... or the healers for the both of you. Bystanders could get hurt if this continues," he spoke harshly, his tone carrying his contempt for this careless show where his face did not convey through cloth. page 2152 Kiddo Seanchain "We answer to the Baroness Yvette," the man snapped in retort, eyeing up Bazil carefully, "The guards around here know better than to interfere in our business. They'll take their time showing up, believe me. So best take your own advice... friend... and stand back before someone gets hurt. If you're still concerned, talk the bystanders back as well. We'll handle this without anyone getting killed." The man did not seem terribly fazed by Autumn's skin, absorbing the shock of the blow with only a grunt. Then he flipped his wrist, sending the blade skipping between the two and down towards Autumn's other leg. page 2152 Jenannen Autumn hadn’t dared to get her hopes up that her assailant would back off and she kept on guard for his next move, but at the new comer’s words she was flooded with gratitude that someone had stepped forward even if it wasn’t exactly on her behalf.
From her attacker’s reaction she gathered that he was an experienced fighter and she moved her staff to block the incoming blow. Rather than maneuver for an attack she moved to draw her attacker away from the crowd, while steering herself away from the man she had already wounded. It was a gesture she hoped the voice she had not been able to put a face to would understand.

page 2152 Jayara A second hand casually came to rest around the staff he seemed to lean on, head not moving, body unreacting to the vocalized threat. "You are poor representatives to cause such a stir. Tactless. I think even the Lady might deny your claim if it holds any truth," he said speaking louder. It would not be the first time someone has made random claims in this city where dragons and humans met. It was a wonder how the peace held out for as long as it did (or didn't) sometimes between all the factions. "Guards? The merchants will have their say with coin if business is lost because travelers start thinking they might be randomly mugged or kidnapped, fae or not." Bazil brushed over the worn wood with a thumb, muscles loose and relaxed. page 2153 Kiddo Seanchain "And the merchants would do well to not offend the Baroness," the man snapped in response, "If they ever wish to do trade with the northern half of the Borderlands." The man turned away from Bazil, walking briskly towards his companion and Autumn. He kept his wounded hand tight to his stomach, but he was unlacing a bag of some sort with his good hand. It was small and looked like it was designed to burst upon impact with something. The second fighter let his sword slide along the length of the stave, disengaging as it did and stepping back. He moved sideways, keeping Autumn at a good distance for his short sword, but still close enough so that she couldn't use the full force behind her stave. He was trying to circle her so that she would be forced to put her back to his companion. Further up the street, Seist ducked out from the mouth of an intersecting street. He paused, staying in the shadows, and assessed the situation. It seemed... controlled... as much as a open fight in the streets could be. Mindful of the crowd, he moved closer, trying to spot Bazil. He couldn't see anything clearly due to distance and bystanders in the way, however. page 2153 Jayara With a grace unbecoming, Bazil matched pace and now moved to cut into and stand in the man's path, staff now with a slight horizontal and forward tilt taking up even more of the roadspace between them. "Then the Baroness should send better men to speak for her. You both are an insult to the Lady. Go home and tend your wounds," he antagonized as he attempted to keep his placement between him and his partner. "Even the rogues here know better than yourself how to do business." His thumb stroked the wood of the staff again as a ripple of magic was channeled within, notable by those sensitive enough to such practice. page 2153 Kiddo Seanchain "The damned fae have upset everything," the man snarled in response, "and yet you protect this one? The dragons are displaced and raid our homes and steal our kin away - because of the fae! Get out of my way, whelp, I'm sure no one will shed a tear over a sympathizer." The crowd rumbled at this. There had been a lot of trouble with the dragons because of the fae conflict... and there had never been too much love for their kind. More a tolerance born of fear of their kind. At the other end of the street, Seist hissed at the feel of magic. It was faint but he still caught it. The priest broke into a sprint, roughly elbowing his way through when his path was blocked. "Make way!" he ordered and the people parted on instinct, "In the name of Dues, MOVE!" page 2153 Jenannen The newcomer had not backed down and Autumn was now hopeful that this did not have to end violently. However she was not comfortable with the second man moving towards her and did not want to be caught between the two if she could help it. She swung for the man’s sword hand hoping to disarm him, if she had to take another hit in the process so be it. page 2154 Kiddo Seanchain The man caught the stave on the guard of his sword and shoved back, stepping closer to Autumn and trying to use his strength to knock her off-balance, or hopefully knock her down. "Best you stop this now," he hissed at her, "No one is coming to help you, the guards can be bought, and the crowd is not friendly to fae. But you knew that, didn't you? You were hiding under that cloak. Stop fighting and just come with us."

page 2154 Jayara "And your actions will only make it worse, you fool! Do you want this city to be a full blown target? If it goes as far as taking one fae, who is to say it would not be one dragon-bound next? Next to a literal camp of dragons? Who here would like to see the neutrality drop over night in this city?" Bazil began to shout loud enough for those listening in the crowd to hear. "This city exists because it is neutral ground! How many people here have homes or businesses that would burn if the neutrality were no more? Who would like to chance their family on them taking one fae? How many here are dragon-bound remaining silent, watching for the outcome, relaying everything to their dragon half? These men here, their actions would only be the start to it all." Bazil's voice shifted from an open shout to something more directed at the man in front of him, taking a few steps back, his position closing in on the fae behind him. "Last chance to end this now honorably and try again another day. As you yourself said - it is just one fae." ((Essentially like how Guy2 is trying to circle and pin the fae between himself and his partner, Bazil is moving to place himself between Guy1 and Autumn, but now backing up closer to Autumn as she's possibly getting pushed back.)) page 2155 Jenannen As the man shoved back Autumn stood firm drawing on her tie to the earth. As long as her feet were on the ground she could root herself to it and she did so now, holding firm much the way an adult tree would against his pressure.
A ferocity, to which she was unaccustomed, marked her words. “I refuse to comply with a man who sees me as nothing more than Fae.”
Adjusting her balance with the staff accodingly Autum reached, with her off hand, for the blade of the man’s sword just above the guard where her staff held firm. If she is able to grab a hold of it she will tighten her grip by growing herself around the sword.((Thank you Kiddo that ended up setting her up perfectly! Though she'll be a bit surprised by the sword thing if it works out. 4laugh )) page 2158 Kiddo Seanchain Bazil's words were enough to cut through the turmoil of the battle. This had taken far longer than either man anticipated and the crowd was not coming to help them as the two had anticipated. Their fear of the fae did not outweigh their fear of shattering the peace of the city - what's more, there was a priest in their midst now. Seist shoved his way into the tight knot of people just as Bazil finished speaking and eyed up both men and fae. After a moment of tense silence, the wounded man put his knife way. Seeing his partner admit defeat, the other man jerked back, caught off-guard by Autumn's refusal to budge, and he staggered, letting go of his sword so that it remained closed in her hand. He moved away, letting her remain there by herself, out of reach of either him or his partner. "This crowd is to disperse," Seist ordered, turning his back to the combatants and holding his priesthood medallion up high, "By divine order!" page 2159 Jayara And there was the traveling priest. Maybe the stored magic would not see use after all. No loss. But yet it did not yet drain from the staff. He still wondered about the bag the knife wielder had reached for earlier though he doubted much would be tried in the presence of Seist himself. Bazil chuckled to himself. Speaking of the priest, apparently he had decided right away not to stand by and watch the scene unfold. Interesting that he would chose to bother with something so trivial to his station and far from home. The men had their point after all. Despite the bluff about dragons razing the town, Bazil was certain the dragons would have agreed to seeing a fae dragged off if they could so choose. But in the end, human selfishness trumped again and the people did not want to get involved at their own risk. Others, yes. But at there own was too much. When the pair of men seemed settled in their new positions, Bazil with cloak twisting around his legs, turned to walk up beside the fae that had rooted herself and held out an open hand. "Best let me have that weapon of his," he said, waiting for Autumn to give over the sword while Seist had been working on dispersing the crowd. ((Scratch the pm question I sent you earlier, Jen. lol)) page 2159 Jenannen As the crowd dispersed Autumn trembled visibly as relief washed over her. The only thing keeping her upright at this point was the same magic that had kept her from being pushed about only a moment before. She wept unabashedly; not an experienced warrior she felt no shame in being shook up by the fight she had just fought. The danger over her body, unbidden, reverted to flesh. Save for her fist which remained a knot of wood. The cut on her thigh now bled, but it drew no thought on her part.
The stranger’s words drew her out of herself and she looked to find her assailant’s sword in hand. When had that happened? Lifting her eyes to the man before her she raised her hand in offering but found herself unable to let the blade go. Fear informed her expression. “I…” there was a tremble in her voice, but no other words followed.((Jayara: Yeah I kinda figured as much. Now I'm left with unsated curiosity. xd Kiddo: What color are Seist's eyes?)) page 2160 Kiddo Seanchain The crowd was starting to disperse at Seist's order, now that the excitement was clearly over and the fight was done. The two men as well seemed ready to take their leave but Seist did not move any closer to Autumn, despite her apparent fear and the aftershock of the battle setting in. He seemed almost to be ignoring her, in fact. "Let's have that bag then," Seist said evenly, keeping his eyes trained on the man that held the pouch. Anger flashed in the man's eyes - he clearly was hoping that it wouldn't be noticed before he could use it. "Bazil, get the fae back and away from him. Hurry." Seist calmly stepped forwards and held out his hand towards the man

page 2161 Jayara When the sword was not let loose, Bazil lowered his hand. The fae woman had gone into some sort of shock - something he had not considered for a fae. It was best to have the sword back in the hands of the one who it belonged to. The quicker the man had it, the more quickly he could be sent away without any reason for him to balk. With the fae encased around the sword, he debated uncertainly how best to proceed. If she had been human, there was a spell or two he might chance, but with a fae? Who knew what natural defenses would magically rebound on him, that is if any of the spells would work at all at such an intimate level. Bazil had been just about to turn for the priest when Seist gave him the order. Well, that sword would have to wait then. "You'd best get up," Bazil said as he knelt down and slid an arm beneath her shoulders, supporting her to an standing position that still did not seem right. The way her weight shifted was all wrong. Her legs were... entwined with the dirt and stone? Her feet would not move nor loosen no matter which way he leaned. "M'am? M'am, you need to let go of the ground," he repeated in a rushed manner, and gradually there came more or less the normal dead weight he had originally expected. He was still being held up longer than the 'hurry' Seist was calling for, however. page 2161 Jenannen Autumn was distantly aware of the word “Fae.” Next thing she knew there was an arm under her shoulders. Supporting her? “Let go,” the same voice that had asked for the sword instructed and she thought to open her hand. But the pull was not at her hand nor at the blade but at her. He meant to move her. Sensing that, at least for now, this man meant to aid her Autumn released her ties to the earth and moved to walk but found that the earth had been supporting her and she clung to the man whose arm was under her shoulders as she lost her feet.
“Rot take me,” she cursed ineffectually; only distantly aware that she had done so. page 2163 Kiddo Seanchain The man holding the bag hesitated a moment more and Seist took a step towards him, still holding out his hands and keeping his eyes trained on the man's face. His gaze was persistent, demanding, and otherwise emotionless. For just a second it seemed the man was going to comply. Then he changed his mind at the last minute and turned, making a bolt for the free space Seist had just cleared out in ordering the crowd to disperse. Seist gestured, a twist of his outstretched wrist, and the sharp tang of magic filled the air, like the static before a storm. The man stumbled and then went down. He scrambled for purchase again, but Seist was there before he could get up. The priest dropped to his one knee, hitting the cobblestones hard, and there was a knife in his hand that had not been there second prior. He put the point to the man's neck, at the artery, and the thug lay still. The second man took the moment of distraction to make his own escape. He turned away from both Autumn and Bazil and started to run. page 2163 Jayara Now free, Bazil began to carry the fae woman, carefully making his way closer toward a stone wall to put at his back. It was as if a dragon was holding its fire breath. The tension in the air kept his concentration locked on the two men and Seist, waiting for it to sizzle down or suddenly belched. The tingling wave of magic that rolled over Bazil's skin signaled the latter. With the priest now effectively pinning the first man and fleet of foot being the second, temptation crossed his mind to give chase. He stayed with the fae woman, on guard in case the second man returned. It was not his jurisdiction to apprehend the fellow lest the priest said otherwise. If the fae woman were left alone, there was no guarantee that bystanders would remain bystanders either, taking up where the others left off. Though at this point he was sure that if Seist's presence didn't make for a persuasion point before, it did now to anyone else still watching. Bazil traced the running second man as far as he dared, before looking around to gather who was left in the area, examining his surroundings a little more while he had a chance. "Second one has fled down an alley," he passed along, keeping a good hold on the fae. page 2163 Jenannen Autumn did not resist as the man carried her, but neither did she assist. As they reached the wall she gave one last shuddering sob and fell silent. page 2164 Kiddo Seanchain Seist let the man up, slowly, keeping him at knife-point. When the man was standing he circled around until he was standing before him. He raised one finger and traced a symbol in the air before the man's forehead. It cut a signet of light into the space just above his head, leaving a glowing rune hovering there in faint white relief. "I mark thee in the name of the gods," he intoned, "So that all will see and know that you belong to the priests." Seist smiled thinly. "I hope your bribes were large enough to cover the temple of Lahmear as well. Hold your hands before you." The man complied and Seist pulled some thin rope from his belt and wound these around the man's wrists. "Can you get the fae to come with us?" Seist called over to Bazil, "I want to get off the street sooner rather than later." ((What does that mean? That he belongs to the priests?))((The priests can enforce their laws, depending on how strong they are in an area. For the priest of Lahmear, that's pretty much anywhere, although they really need a temple in the Borderlands. Downswood has one. So Seist has put the equivalent of a 'wanted' poster around the dude's neck. Or in this case, a floating rune above his head.)) ((So why did Seist mark him that way? Being new to this world and all I'm trying to make sense of it. ^^;
So is the rune visable to all or just to priests? Can other priests remove it, like if it had been priest who sent him instead of Yvette (if she did)?))((No problem, I don't mind. Seist is trying to scare the guy into cooperating so he doesn't try and run off again. The rune is visible to anyone and it's magical in nature, so anyone with magical talent can remove it. That includes priests. Priests have access to divine magic and even if they weren't born with magical talent, if they're particularly close to their god or their god is especially powerful and can spare power for all his/her followers, they can use magic. Seist just happens to be a mage that joined a priesthood. A priesthood of mages. A very small priesthood, but one nonetheless. )) ((Thanks, I appreciate that. <3 Anyone with magical talent... so theoretically Autumn could remove it?
So Gods here are not omnipotent and not all of them grant "magic" to their followers?))((Autumn could remove. Anyone with magical talent. Gods are not omnipotent... the only source of omnipotence is the Blessed Path and it's not precisely a sentient force. Sain is about the best you'll get. He and the gods stay out of each other's way. Not all of the gods grant power because they have a limited supply. The more followers, the more powerful the god. Lahmear is the most commonly worshiped, so he's pretty generous.))

page 2164 Jayara "Agreed," Bazil replied. With the second one out of reach and away from the area, it was ironically a good time to do the same. "I think she's going to be stunned for a time yet - if it's anything like a human's shock. Carrying her will not be difficult though." Or it would not be if she would just drop the sword. That thing bumping around was just short of possibly cutting himself. This wasn't going to be a ladylike ride. Resting his staff against the wall, Bazil readjusted the fae woman so that she was hung over his shoulder careful of the sword still in one hand, awkwardly shifting with the woman's staff still in her other sticking out every which way she was turned. Simply lifting her seemed to be the least of the cloaked man's troubles. "Let's be off then," Bazil said as he took back his staff. "Where to?" page 2164 Kiddo Seanchain "Never seen a fae in shock before," Seist commented, "Then again, I've only met fae when they wanted me to see them. This is all new for me." Seist made sure to snag the pouch the man had before setting off, as well as make a mental note of any other weapons he was carrying. He checked the contents of the bag before adding it to his own stash. "Fae poison," he commented, "You can tell because of the bluish tint. I doubt it's potent enough to kill - that stuff is wickedly expensive - but it still raises all sorts of questions about how desperate his employers are to capture a fae. Or how desperate he is to deliver to his employer." The man made no comment at this. "We need to go to the temple of Lahmear. I believe it's in the officials section of the city... but I don't remember where that is. I tried to stay out of local politics when last I was here. You'll have to lead, Bazil, and I'll take up the rear to make sure our 'friend' here behaves." page 2164 Jenannen As Autumn was jostled around she clung tighter to her staff; the one thing that she was keenly aware of in all the trouble that had found her. page 2165 Jayara Damn. He had been hoping the priest had known more about the Faerie. He was unsure if the fae woman had been injured, and if she had, the healer crafts of magic were not his forte - even for human kind. Every point of anatomy and muscle could be addressed, but his spellwork was more limited. Something he had not delved into for a long time. Discussion then turned to motives. Bazil threw his lot in with desperation lying upon the man and not the employer. If someone well off wanted a job done, they would hire something more than this, would they not? Unless no one else would take the job, perhaps. There were too many open ended possibilities to consider to even begin questioning such things without what the now marked man hid behind his tongue. The machinations behind such things concerned him little. "That's a bit of a walk." And also not the most inconspicuous of one. "We'll pick up a cart or wagon and driver along the way." In this case, a carriage would be preferable to cut off any gawkers or give the fae woman somewhere to sit should she come to mid trip. While he preferred to stretch his legs, he'd willingly toss what coin he carried on him in this situation just for the sake of prevention. When the retainer walked past the priest, there was a light sense of something else magical in play, passive, that had not been there before the two of them had parted ways. There was the spell stored in Bazil's staff, but this was coming from beneath his hood, almost like a halo sitting low upon his head around his face. After Bazil took the lead and had been walking, he spoke up again. "A bluish tint, huh?" There were the sounds of a smirk coming from ahead of the priest. ((After any responses, feel free to skip ahead to... the temple? Lest Guy 2 is still around...)) page 2165 Jenannen Autumn drew comfort from the warmth of the wood in her hand. The manner in which the heart of her mother’s tree had been removed had allowed her mother’s spirit to live on, though both she and her tree had died their combined hearts had not. The very staff that had called her away from her home she carried with her, in part, as a reminder that her heart remained with her sisters no matter the distance that separated them.
The growing warmth was combated by the uncomfortable lifeless cold of the blade in her other hand. At last she found the resolve to discard it. Her hand reverted to flesh and the sword fell to the ground with a clatter. page 2166 Kiddo Seanchain "Aye, that sounds like a plan," Seist said absently, watching ahead to see if there were any passerbys that could be waylaid for a cart. He had no doubt he'd be able to find one - people were generally willing to help a priest, especially if said priest had coin with which to compensate them for their time. "There's not much poison that will work on fae," he said in response to Bazil's half-question, "At least not fae as an entire race, that is. There are different breeds of fae and the poisons vary from type to type which makes a species-wide poison nightmarish to find. But they found one... and while it's not very potent, it's enough to knock one off their feet for a time. Contact, inhalation, ingestion... it all works. It's ground into a powder and looks like ash mixed with lapis lazuli." As the sword slipped from Autumn's grip, Seist knelt to retrieve it, saying nothing. He glanced up at the fae, solemnly concerned, but at seeing her hand he only grimaced, briefly, and then stood and quickened his pace. "Up ahead," he said to Bazil, "We'll ambush that farmer for his cart. Ambush him with money." ((all in favor of a time skip to the temple?))

page 2167 Kiddo Seanchain The temple of Lahmear was busy all days, and so the doors stood open to the populace. It was a modest size, easily dwarfing the nearby manors, but for Seist it was woefully small. He was used to the temples in the major cities further inland, away from dragon territory, where the priests of Lahmear numbered in the hundreds for a single temple. Still, he couldn't complain too much. A temple was a temple and he knew the priests would help them - for one thing, they couldn't be bought. Lahmear was a god of justice and while it was cold and sometimes brutal, it was justice nonetheless. No exceptions - rich and poor, weak and powerful - all were subject to it. The priests had apparently seen them coming, for one of the acolytes ran out to greet them, noting both the stunned woman and the bound and marked man that Seist guarded. She was younger, probably only fourteen, and wore an unadorned red robe and cap with white trim. Seist bowed to her and she bowed back, hastily, eager to look over the newcomers. "This man attacked a fae woman in the streets," Seist said, "I believe he was attempting to kidnap her." The girl only paid attention long enough to note Seist's priesthood medallion before turning to Bazil. Seist's accent marked him an outsider and she seemed more at ease with dealing with a local. "Come inside," she said to the retainer, "Can you carry the woman? Leave the cart outside, no one will take it." page 2167 Jayara "As the light of Lahmear calls," Bazil said rather formally during his own bow before turning to retrieve the fae woman, whether he needed to carry her in his arms or simply see her to her own feet and make certain she stayed upright. Once that had been attended, Bazil turned back to the woman of the cloth who had greeted them. "All is ready. Lead the way." ((Left an opening there for Autumn if she is aware enough or not. I would say that the right is 5-10 minutes. Your call. Bazil will still insist on escorting if she does take to her own feet, however.)) page 2168 Jenannen Autumn had become more fully aware of her surrounding during their journey to the temple but had chosen to remain quietly observant as she was wont to do. She was not sure where they were going but she contented herself that, save for the cut on her thigh, she was well and whole.
The cart stopped rather sooner than she had expected and a woman’s voice greeted them. She let the man lift her out of the cart and graciously accepted his assistance; taking his arm in escort to steady herself while salvaging something of her dignity.((So basically coming to not much before they get there. Jayara: You good with that for her and Bazil?)) page 2168 Kiddo Seanchain The four were led inside by the acolyte. The main part of the temple was a vast arched hall with windows along every inch of available space to let in the light. The back sported a circle of glass, stained in various shades of yellow and red to resemble the sun and the acolyte paused in the pattern this cast on the floor and genuflected. Then she continued down the center to where the temple branched off in two directions at the other end. She took the right-hand passage and took them through a narrow hall and down some stairs until they reached a guarded door. The guard raised an eyebrow at their approach, clearly surprised to have someone actually brought in today. "Sir," the acolyte said, turning to Seist, "Before we imprison this man to await the priesthood's decision, do you swear that this is the right thing to do?" "Upon my gods, I swear it," Seist replied solemnly, "He carries fae poison and from what I saw, was one of the aggressors in this conflict. I am certain the fae girl will be able to tell us more, once this one is safely put away and we can speak with the high priest." page 2168 Jayara The colors of the spectrum glowing through stained glass were lost on Bazil and he very well knew it as he did every time he was within these and other halls of sun god since he was young. It was said that their windows were a few of the most dazzling, some even making a walk look as if one was walking through the sun's fire itself the way the golds and reds would flicker in the chambers. It was a beauty that even Lahmear had not been able to give back. Or any other god. It was the subtle difference in the air which signaled when they had reached the main hall. Sound seemed to flow farther in the open room than the hallway. Directed light from above bounced off his bare hands warming his skin. A small, but testing comfort reminding him that the light was still there, regardless of color, resparking the memories of those who had tried to help him during those buried years. There had been many memories spent within halls such as these. In the solitude beneath his cloak, Bazil remained quiet, contemplating. He shared nothing of his distanced thoughts regarding the temple while continuing to assist and escort the fae woman as they traversed. When Seist gave his truth to the acolyte, Bazil's thought's turned toward the two men they had crossed. Had Lady Yvette in fact been their benefactor, what would it mean if anything? Could their claim have been just a ruse to see if they would back down? More importantly the second one had run and was still in the streets. Would he leave town or return to try and finish the job? page 2169 Jenannen ((Going off it getting towards dark when Autumn left the flower shop + battle + travel time I’m picturing that it is dark and that the light is not actual sunlight coming through the windows.)) While Autumn was not devout to a solitary faith, neither was she faithless nor ignorant of the varying religions. She would offer prayer to Allm each season as she followed her wanderlust and began her travels. Esiar had her thanks each time she was able to protect. Her thoughts turned to The Sibling Gods when she was given opportunity to learn.
As the acolyte paused in the pattern of light and showed her respect to her god Autumn admired the pattern of light but wished for the warmth of the sun. Not it’s symbolic light. Still, she supposed this the more appropriate symbolism; Lahmear’s justice was not known to be warmed by mercy. Lighted by knowledge, but not warmed by mercy.
For a moment she wished not to be here in this temple, it was not her desire to serve her attacker cold hard justice. But neither is it wise to leave him free to attack another, she consoled herself. Though she did not walk the path of the blessed the longer she lived the less she believed life’s events were mere happenstance.
Autumn followed quietly where she was led and listened as the acolyte and priest talked. Autumn was glad that she was not the one the acolyte had addressed for she would have offered no such certainty as the priest had. At the priest’s reference to her Autumn wanted to draw solitude about her like a shroud, but knew that now was neither the time nor the place.

page 2170 Kiddo Seanchain Seist glanced sideways at Autumn and regarded her silence for a moment, before turning back to the acolyte. He took the accused man and shoved him roughly forwards, giving directions to the guard that he should probably be searched, as he was carrying poison and might have more. He was then taken away, down a narrow set of stairs, to where a jail was set underneath the temple, as Lahmear often was called upon to dispense justice alongside the city authorities. Bazil, Seist, and Autumn were then led through the temple to a small room with benches along either wall and an impressive double door at the end. The wood was carved with scenes from the mythology of Lahmear and the acolyte vanished through these, telling them to wait until the high priest could see them. Seist threw himself on the nearest bench and grinned at Autumn and Bazil. "So let's get our stories straight here," he said to the two, "We're going to be kept waiting, I'm sure. I showed up just in time to see the battle already in progress and know absolutely nothing else... save that one carried fae-poison, that is, and I don't really trust anyone that carries poison on them like that. Miss, what is your name? Let's start there." He addressed Autumn directly with his question. page 2170 Jenannen A shy smile briefly lighted Autumn’s face as Seist grinned at her and she turned her face away bashfully. “You make it sound as though we conspire against the man,” she said with a tinge of disapproval though her tone was light. Her voice is soft and reminiscent of the wind rustling though the leaves of a tree. She returned her gaze to him and answered, “Among the lands of men I am known as Autumn.” page 2171 Jayara Bazil took a seat opposite from the bench Seist had chosen. His staff was set down against the wall within reach whenever they should be called upon next. Once settled, a hand rose to disappear beneath the lip of his hood. The aura circling his head dissipated, there was a deep breath, and the hand reappeared, dropping back into the attendant's lap. Sitting back against the wall, Bazil listened to the start of the conversation to avoid focusing on the ungraceful throb in his skull, toll and payment for going beyond what he needed to. But he listened all the same, curious of the woman's story as to how it had occurred from her end in regards to the fight. He did wonder what a fae would be doing all the way out here. Maybe like the dragons, in a way, she had being trying to avoid the apparent war that was occurring within the race of fae to the East. "I would be Bazil, m'am," he briefly introduced himself where he saw fit. page 2171 Kiddo Seanchain "And I would be Margrave Seist," Seist replied grandly, "That rounds out our happy trio. And conspire? You wound me. I am merely trying to make sure we aren't talking over ourselves when called before the priest." He frowned suddenly, sitting up straight on the bench. "I doubt this fellow will need our help in condemnation, after all. Why did they attack you? What exactly happened?" page 2171 Jenannen She nodded to Bazil in acknowledgement as he gave her his name then returned her attention to Seist as he too showed her that courtesy.
A small giggle, quickly suppressed, escaped as he suggested that her words had wounded him. There was an easy self-assuredness to him that warmed her.
At his questions Autumn began to walk about the small room gathering her thoughts. Her movement was easy and graceful and she was relieved to find that she could walk about on her own. Her steps brought to mind the cut on her thigh and her hand absently brushed it. Nothing I can not heal tonight, she thought to herself. She turned to Seist, “You are certain it was fae-poison?” she asked thoughtfully. page 2171 Jayara "Speaking of which, Margrave, would you mind if I checked over that pouch? That is if you are willing to part with it temporarily. Care would be taken. I would like to become familiar with its other properties aside for just its coloring of blue before we may have to give up such a thing." He wished there was more time to study it in detail. Racial poisons, such as dragonsbane, were amazing in their theoretical range of effectiveness, but not something he had outright handled previously. It was a bit too risky to deal with lacking assistance in handling and preparation in such things. Not that that ever stopped him from entering unexpected fields, but it did make it more difficult. "Assuming that the possibility is there. Would they take such a thing in as evidence of aggression?" With the dust being of claimed possession by the margrave, he was not sure that the High Priest would. That Seist was both a margrave and priest himself made him wonder but - but not far as a hand disappeared again under Bazil's hood. After that bit of headache passed, he wondered if they would destroy such a thing, but he doubted it. As expensive as Seist had explained it out to be, chances were slim, even in a place such as this. Storage then, possibly, or maybe they would resell such a thing to fund the temple's activities. All theories really, he reminded himself.

page 2171 Kiddo Seanchain "I know poisons," Seist replied solemnly to Autumn, "While I've never had an occasion to use fae-poison - thanks be to the gods - I've certainly seen it before." He pulled the pouch out and passed it over to Bazil, keeping a watchful eye on Autumn's pacing to ensure she wouldn't come too close to it when Bazil opened the pouch. "It's certainly an odd thing for someone to be carrying if their intentions were good," the priest continued, "There's no use for it outside it's intended purpose. Give it a smell - resembles soot, doesn't it? The taste is pretty vile as well, like day-old mud. It's harmless to humans, if you were of a mind to see for yourself. Were I the one sitting in judgement on this incident, I would take it's presence alone as a sign that wrong-doing was intended. Unless this attack was provoked, of course... which unless there is absolute certainty that is not the case, may be how the high priest initially interprets it... with the current attitude towards fae being what it is." His eyes rested steadily on Autumn, both thoughtful and stern. His voice had taken the sharp edge of a warning, insinuating that this might not be as straight-forwards has it had initially seemed, if the high priest were so biased against her race. "I will speak with him first," Seist continued, "It is my right to demand such an audience. I can sway his opinion - so long as I know the entire story." ((if you want to skip the exposition and just say 'Autumn tells him what happened' I can go with it - we were all there, after all. Seist just wasn't)) page 2171 Jenannen She nodded accepting Seist’s word that he knew poisons and her look grew contemplative. Heeding Seist’s warning about the priest and keenly aware of his eyes on her Autumn asked with purpose, “What is it you see before you?” Though such direct attention as she had just invited made her uncomfortable she stood relaxed and held her hands out in both invitation and question. Would he know her as dryad or would he, too, see her only as fae. The timidity and seclusion of her race as a whole made it very unlikely that he would know her for what she was.((I’d actually prefer to play this out, but thank you.)) page 2171 Jayara "It wasn't so much as questioning the captive's intentions," Bazil explained, letting the pouch hop in his hand to test the weight, "but that of who takes claim over items such as these. Do they simply let the ranking official who brings in a suspected wrong-doer claim these maligned items or do the temple officials themselves take and house them?" Bazil asked of the priest's knowledge. He settled at the farthest point of the bench and carefully opened the pouch, confirming the descriptions Seist gave regarding taste and smell. He kept quiet about the chance the high priest might be unfavorable toward fae. It was not impossible, such was humanity, but to travel that path of thinking left everything open to consider that this or any other such events were orchestrated from within. Fights picked were paid off with money - and security. Any such incident would almost never backfire on those hired. Those ranked priests of Lahmear would not worry about their mercenaries giving away their names. Even if they were caught, they would soon be released and no one would be the wiser. If the mercenaries talked, the priests would deny it, and who would then listen to the mercenaries? No one. Bazil brushed the runaway thought aside. His imagination was getting carried away on mysteries again. They were dealing with priests of Lahmear after all. It was also a dangerous theory for one to have while within the confines of said temple. The man had claimed to been under the call of Lady Yvette, and he had no reason to believe the man had been lying then. "What one sees is an awfully objective thing to inquire," Bazil commented upon Autumn's question to the priest, interrupting from the side while still feeling the dust between his fingertips. "Does it matter?" page 2171 Kiddo Seanchain Seist addressed Bazil's question first, that being the easier of the two to answer. "It will be up to the priest's discretion," Seist said, "I do hope he'll let me keep it, however. As a priest of Dues and Frain I'll have more use of it than any Lahmear's followers would. I would like to better understand it's properties." He then regarded Autumn, overt in his cool appraisal. It seemed every time he looked at her he had that look - not quite cold, but certainly not trusting either. "You're fae," he said bluntly, "Your people rarely overtly lie but nor can they be trusted. I only know what I saw, which was Bazil standing to defend you and for that, you have some measure of my trust. But otherwise, I see fae, and I see all that brings with it. Fae are not to be trusted. If it weren't for the current hostility towards your kind, I would have trouble believing this attack was utterly unprovoked. If you know who had reason to target you like this, than I would appreciate the name at this point." page 2172 Jenannen She addressed Bazil first, “I agree with your wisdom Bazil,” she replied warmly, “and if I am not mistaken you see things as others do not. Seist however,” she returned her attention to him, “has proven my point,” she tipped her head to him. “I ask you both when was the last time you found a fae?”((If there is a problem with her knowing/guessing he's blind please let me know Jayara.)) page 2172 Jayara "It is not my wisdom. Simply truth taken from the Goddess Fade." Bazil remained focused on the bag and dust, even as he spoke. "Truth and deception are a part of all things. Along that note, no, I do not see things as others do not. Not truly, m'am." He knew what she was insinuating, but it was not that he could 'see' more than anyone else as the question seemed to imply. He tied up the bag and brushed off his dust tainted fingers on the inside of his sleeve. "And I see no point proven. You are fae unless you are denying such thing, just as I am human. I apologize but this seems more likely to end in an argument than anything," Bazil said passing the bag back to the priest, knowing there was not much else that he would get from picking at its contents any longer. What did it matter if he had met a fae before or not? ((Guesses I have no problem with. It's not like the hood is see through. How Bazil takes questioning is a different story. lol))

page 2172 Kiddo Seanchain "If you saw a bear in the forest," Seist said, "and it tried to eat you, would you assume that perhaps the next bear is safe - or would you assume that all bears are dangerous and stay the hell away? I know enough about fae to not trust your kind easily. And you're not helping by dodging like this. Is it really so difficult to tell me what provoked this attack? Gods. Bazil, will you at least tell me what you saw or heard?" ((keep in mind Seist didn't show up until near the end, so he missed them declaring who they worked for and all that. And it's really late at night, so this will be my last post until tomorrow)) page 2172 Jenannen Autumn shrouded herself in a magic that suggested she was other than she was. Much the way she drew solitude to her it was not a shift in reality, but in perception. She drew it about her gently so that the change in appearance would not be harsh, but a gentle shift suggesting she had appeared thus from their meeting on the streets. She envisioned herself as shorter, slightly more curvy, and with hair a shade of red seen among humans. She also thought her voice less whimsical and more human. While it was true that when she was casual about her solitude the magic could be pierced, when she clung to it, however, she was good as invisible. She clung now to her magic.
“My point is thus: I walk among men candidly of my own volition.” she explained gently and with more patience than she felt. In her head she added, And not in ignorance of prejudice or risk. “As for trust, my lord,” she addressed him respectfully though slightly melodramatic, “I find the same can be said for the race of man. As for my trust I offer it until broken and on individual basis.”
She let her magic fall; release akin to the sensation of waking from a vivid dream with a clear recollection of events both real and imagined. “To answer your question, my attackers claimed The Baroness would pay handsomely for my capture but mind reading is not among my talents and I can offer no validity to their claim.” She sat, “Now if you can accept what I have given you,” her tone posture and expression all conveyed her solemnity, “I will do my best to answer your questions in a more forthright manner, which it seems you would find more pleasing.” Always so impatient, she thought to herself, man is so prone to miss the forest for the tree. page 2173 Jayara "When I arrived, the three were already squared off. I heard the same claim from the man we turned in. I have no reason to disbelieve the pair did not come from the north." Aside from the shift in magic and the different form it was being used in, the change in Autumn's physical traits went unnoticed by the hooded Bazil. It left him unsure as to what just took place, curious as to what point she had just been trying to prove. The tone he chose to ignore between both of them, patience being needed in case something should occur here. "Other than that, there is not much more to say about the encounter. They were hesitant to strike out at me when I entered the fray. Their goal was solely the woman here." page 2173 Kiddo Seanchain Seist's head snapped up and the muscles in his shoulders went tight at the mention of the Baroness. He stared at Autumn for a moment but he seemed to be looking through her, lost in worried contemplation upon hearing the name. Then he turned to Bazil and gave the retainer the same half-there look when he confirmed. He swore violently, standing abruptly and pacing tightly along his side of the room. "If the Baroness wants a fae," he said, "She'll get one. Her net is too wide and she has too many resources. But why a fae? I thought her interests were solely in dragons..." He trailed off, stopping in his pacing and putting his knuckles to his lips. Then he looked sideways at Autumn, this time not looking so cold. Instead, he seemed concerned, and somewhat approving at what he saw. "You need to get gone," he told her, "I don't know what holds you to this city, but it's not worth being a fae in human lands right now, especially if Baroness Yvette intends to capture herself a fae. You'd be safer in the forest... you should return to your people. And if you can hide your fae appearance, so much the better until you get there." page 2174 Jenannen Autumn cowered slightly at Seist’s outburst; she had not expected such a violent reaction to her words. She concerned herself little enough with the nobility and politics of the lands of man.
“Dragons…” she said in quiet awe. Hesitantly she offered “I am unbound.” She preferred to think that was the reason that The Baroness may want her. Reasons, none of them tied to her lacking a bound, assaulted her thoughts and threatened to overwhelm her. She drew her legs to her chest and rested her chin atop them.
She spoke more to herself than to Seist, but spoke nonetheless, “I am, myself, uncertain why I linger here. I have been here since thaw and the lengthening of days did not beckon me away as I am accustomed to.” It had been centuries since she had been home, and while she remembered her sister’s parting words that she would be welcomed back, in her heart she felt that was not where her path led. page 2174 Jayara "I agree with Priest Seist. You, m'am, after this need to travel far from this city and that of the cities north. There is still at least one more man roaming, if not more, upon the streets here. But let us get back to the situation at hand," Bazil stated, trying to reign in the reactions of both. "So if it was the Baroness calling for this, sir, who trumps? So far it has just been their word. What if they have proof of their claim on paper? Will the High Priest cater toward the Lady Yvette, or will he cater to the neutrality here to keep the peace? At least out in the public, the game can be played two ways. Just as they could threaten with the Baroness's reach, we could play upon the fear of dragon retaliation. Behind closed doors, the public sees little and ignores much."

page 2174 Kiddo Seanchain "I have no idea what Yvette would want in a fae," Seist admitted to Autumn, "I can only make wild guesses and I prefer to not do so." He mused for a moment over Bazil's questions. His information was... quite lacking in this matter. He did not have the connections here in the Borderlands he had elsewhere. Furthermore, while he liked Bazil so far, he was reluctant to part with what information he did know. Even if the man was trustworthy, it would not be right to drag him into this business. This was best handled alone. When Seist answered, he picked his words carefully. "I believe," he said slowly, "that we can count on the high priest to act in an impartial manner. The priests of Lahmear are dependent on their gods favor for their power and that is something that can and will be revoked should he allow himself to be swayed by mortal authority. That sort of power is a hard thing to lose, not to mention that a priest stripped of divine magic stands to lose his post within the priesthood. Unless Yvette is influential enough to convince him to take that risk - and she is not - we should be safe. Gods are involved now. Yvette would not have risen to the position she is in if she were the type to defy gods over the fate of a two somewhat incompetent thugs." His voice had been rising in passion as he talked, but at the remark at the end he once again fell to an even cadence, tinged with wry humor. page 2174 Jenannen Autumn listened quietly as the men spoke in turn. As Seist concluded she asked quietly, “Are there any other questions you need answered before we are fetched?” page 2175 Jayara Yes, the priests lost their powers if they strayed from their respected path. Sitting in the some of the backcorner taverns, how wide or narrow that path could be was a night or two of debate while under the mug. More rumors were cropping up about corruption, fewer than those that had been about the fae to the East, but there was no way to confirm any of it. "Yes, the Lady would not have - not over just two thugs. For the sake of all in the city, I pray you are correct." He said nothing past that. At the mention by the fae, he too wondered at what length that would be waiting until the High Priest would call upon who he would need to. When this was done, if things went well, Bazil wondered how long the priest from the south would continue to stay within the city and seek out the dragons, or if this might hurry things along. page 2175 Kiddo Seanchain The door to the study opened and the acolyte peeked her head back out again. She looked nervous and her eyes rested on Autumn for a moment. Then she quickly cast her gaze to the floor. "The High Priest Therris will see you now," she said quietly. Seist quickly moved to take lead. He beamed at the acolyte and brushed past her inside. The room was a modest size with a number of chairs arranged in a semi-circle facing the high priest himself. A scribe's desk sat in one corner, off to the side. Therris himself was unimpressive, a small man with hair that was half-way gray. Upon entering, Seist walked over to stand before the man and then bowed with practiced ease, not quite low enough to signal subservience, but low enough to convey that Seist considered him worthy of respect. page 2175 Jenannen Autumn noted the acolyte’s nervousness and wondered what it had to do with her. Seeing no point in delaying things she rose to her feet composing herself as she crossed the gap to Bazil requesting, in gesture, his escort once more. He took his feet and offered her his arm. As they walked together she noted that his pace was slower than previous but gave it no more thought than that.
She let go of Bazil’s arm to follow Seist’s example. Aware of the line she must now walk she offered a respectful curtsey exemplary of the grace and beauty the fae were known to possess. She too withheld any gesture of subservience; the fae were known far and wide for their haughtiness and to signal subservience on her part was more indicative of an insult.((Thanks Jayara. If I need to edit just let me know.)) page 2175 Jayara Unlike the others, Bazil's head bowed down fully proper from the side of Autumn not flanked by Seist, still about a step or two farther back than the others. "May the rays of Lahmear always shine upon your path," he said before straightening, his staff still by his side, remembering to grab it before they entered. He also remembered to dissipate the spell he had stored within before coming through the doorway. It felt too much like walking into a room with a bow at full draw, regardless of the spell he had stored. It was simply not done. While in reality the gesture was pointless when the magic could be called forth without the staff, it was only proper not to - and safer. This was the High Priest after all, someone with power, both magical and non, far exceeding his. Keeping steady besides the now steady ache in his head, Bazil waited for further instructions, waiting to see what would come of this, it if would end as simply as the fae would go and the man would be kept away, so be it. If it was something more complicated, he would soon find that out.
