Laelia wasn't much of a huntress, she had never intended to be one. Her mother was never pushy about what her cubs became but there was always the hope of joining the rank much of the family held. At least.. if you looked past what the current family state was. It was complicated by the fact that Grandpa was now king, but his family had always been guards.
It was because of this that it was so strange to see her out with the hunters, but she had been intent on spending more time with her new friend, Yareha Afaer. While she did not need to go on patrol, she saw no problem with giving hunting a shot. And now she knew for sure.. she didn't like it and she was no good at it. Thankfully it was over now.
"That was a mess," she said, glancing over to Yareha as they walked back into the lands from the hunt.

When he'd invited Laelia to join the night's hunt, he had thought that it would be simple - the two of them separate from the rest, finding small game and bringing it down. It had seemed like an excellent idea at the time. Now, it seemed much less of a good idea. He shook his head at the lioness as he responded. "How a Guard like you can be so noisy and visible on a hunt I'll never understand," he told her. He really didn't understand it. Then again, his conception of a Guard's duties saw them hunkering down much like a Hunter, and then pouncing (verbally or physically) on intruders in the Mwezi'Johari lands. Well, maybe that wasn't how Guards worked. But damnit, weren't lionesses supposed to be better Hunters than lions?

"Hey now," she said, not taking his comment too seriously since it wasn't vitally important she be an excellent huntress, "I was trying very hard to impress you."
Though she said it like a joke, she knew it was partially true- it was part of why she failed so miserably, she was trying too hard and thinking too much about it. Being a guard seemed so easy and natural now, being a hunter seemed so different and it was hard to focus on it the right way. "At least nobody was relying on just us or they'd be hungry tonight," she added.

"Oh, you impressed me all right," Yareha retorted with a smile on his face and a friendly jab in Laelia's side. "You impressed me so much that I'm never going to bring you on a hunt again - or was that your goal?"
She did have a point - it was a good thing that the other Hunters had been much more productive tonight, that way no one else would miss the meat they should have brought back. But he enjoyed teasing her. It was nice to know that she couldn't do everything perfectly.
Truthfully, failure or not, he was enjoying spending time and hanging out with the lioness.

"Maybe," she said smartly, grinning at him and picking up the pace a little bit, "But I'll never tell."
It was a shame she couldn't get him to come on proper patrol with her sometime, he was in the wrong class to be taken seriously as a guard, even a temporary one. Of course, she still might have tried it. His father was a guard, after all, he must have some interest.
"What trouble are we going to cause now?" she asked, glancing back to him.

Yareha shook his head and rolled his eyes. Of course she'd never tell him - that's how females were. It wasn't even worth him trying to get it out of her at that. He wondered what she was thinking when she went quiet like that, between teasing him. The white lion gave a mental shrug, if she wanted him to know, she'd tell him.
He considered the question Laelia had posed. It was an intriguing question. Then a grin crossed his yellow muzzle. "I have an idea - come with me!"
The young male padded swiftly through the dark and quiet lands, his soft tread hardly disturbing a single sleeping soul as he headed straight for the watering hole.

Whatever Laelia was expecting when she asked her question, the reaction she got was not it. She looked at Yareha almost suspiciously when he grinned, but followed after him eagerly. She figured out quickly which direction they were headed but she decided not to ask any questions about it yet. It was more fun if she didn't try to demand answers and she suspected just asking wouldn't get her much information.
So she followed silently, waiting to see what happened.

The water hole was deserted, as was only to be expected at this time of night. Yareha reached the edge and paused to grin over his shoulder at the lioness. Then he took a breath and dived into the water.
It wasn't exactly usual that Yareha swam, and the water hole was barely big enough for such activity, but it was something he always enjoyed doing when he had the chance. Likely he'd get in even worse trouble if one of the high rankers found out he was "polluting the water supply" or something like that.
But it was the perfect type of trouble to cause with Laelia. He popped his head above the surface again and called out to her. "C'mon in!"

Laelia came to a stop at the water's edge, just barely catching the grin Yareha gave her before very suddenly he was in the waterhole. With a shriek of laughter, she jumped back, watching him go and shaking her head.
"I don't think so!" she called back as he tried to get her to come in, "You're insane, Yareha!"
She was not a big fan of swimming and he might convince her to join him but she wasn't going to make it that easy. Oh no.

"Awwww!" Yareha made a face at Laelia's refusal. Then he grinned again and dove beneath the surface. He stayed there for a few long moments before coming up again right near where the lioness was standing, being sure to splash her as thoroughly as he could.
"There, now you're wet too. So come on!" he encouraged her. The white lion felt his jaw muscles starting to ache with how much he was smiling. This was great fun, though he still wanted to actually get her into the water.

She knew better than to stay at the water's edge when there was someone in the water intent on making you get in, too, but she didn't move. Instead, she watched for him to resurface-- and completely missed any opportunity she had to avoid being splashed.
"Hey!" she laughed, shaking her head so she could glare at him without having water running down her face.. but it didn't last very long and she jumped in and swam after him, trying to devise a plan for revenge as she went.

Laughing, Yareha swam around the watering hole, doing his best to avoid being grappled. Splashing he didn't mind nearly as much, given how he was already soaked through of his own free will. Finally he headed for the bank and pulled himself out, dripping water everywhere.
"That enough trouble for you?" he asked Laelia with a wicked glint in his eye. He still had a few tricks left...depending on her answer.

Laelia chased after him clumsily only to be lead back out of the water- she scrambled after him and as he paused to ask her if that was enough trouble, she leaped at him, aiming to shove him over into the dirt while there was still a good chance for it to stick to his wet fur. He was nice and white, it would have a fair impact.
"This isn't over yet!"

Okay, he wasn't exactly expecting that. Yareha hit the ground with a "woomph" as all the air was forced out of his lungs by the pouncing lioness. Laelia had put her Guard training to good use in that movement and the white lion had been completely unprepared for it.
"Oh yeah?" he retorted once he got his breath back. The lion twisted around and pulled on the brown lioness to bring her down with him and began nuzzling her affectionately, dirt and water and mud and all.
"I can think of a few ways for this to end..." he murmured in her ear.
