Steel Port. Once a wealthy industrial city, home to many factories and steel mills, has degraded into a den of debauchery, housing all sorts of criminals. Drug dealers, muggers, murderers, rapists, venture capitalists and politicians, Steel Port has them all. Of course, since crime is business as usual for the city, there is something else that sets them apart from everyone else; mutants. Due to a chemical outbreak in the industrial plants fifty years ago, a not so poisonous gas blanketed the city for a few days, infecting the city's water supply. The gas wasn't harmful, and dissipated after a few days, the industrial plant was quarantined, shut down, and reopened as though nothing went wrong. Of course, things did go wrong somehow. The gas affected the genetic code of the people that breathed it in, the result: their offspring were mutants. Not mutants in the normal, uninteresting way, but mutants in the comic book and movie sense, with special powers ranging from telepathy to spatial manipulation.
Not everyone's children were affected, only maybe half the population had special powers in the 70's, but now, only about a fourth of them do, but those with special powers have also spread out more. Because of the water supply being infected, and that there was a water bottling plant in the city, which distributed the contaminated water to almost the entire world, by the late 2000's about a fifth of the population of the United States had special powers, and even more in other countries around the world.
The mutants are crying discrimination, and the regular humans are afraid of the mutants. Unbeknownst to the general public, the government has a secret division dedicated to investigating, capturing, and eliminating mutants. The tension between the mutants and humans in Steel Port is getting worse, the police department is working on a way to combat the mutant "threat" however, without genetic testing there is no way to tell if someone is a mutant unless they show their powers. Because of this, everyone seems to be looking sideways at the people next to them, unsure if their friends or neighbors or even their own children can even be trusted.

"So what you're telling me is that we're essentially nowhere. We have no idea who is and who is not one of them aside from the people who we have DNA on. We can make sure that there's no one working for us who's one of them, but no one else. I ask you Colonel, what, pray tell is the goddamn POINT of this secret division if we can't DO anything!?" The tall man slammed his hands down on the desk, berating his subordinate for things far out of his control. The man calmed himself down and ran a hand through his hair, straightening it back to where it was. He sighed and looked at the soldier in front of him and said, "Get our scientists on it; we need a way to track them without taking a sample of everyone's blood." The Colonel nodded and replied, "Yes sir, as for the few that we suspect might have abilities, we can't seem to pin them down; they won't submit for the blood tests, but we can't force them to do so... And a few of them are unbelievably hard to keep track of." The tall man calmly placed his hands on the desk in front of him, folding them together and sighing before saying, "No excuses Colonel, we remain a secret from the public for a reason; we have the authority to do whatever we please." The Colonel saluted and beat a hasty retreat, quickly stepping out of the man's office and shutting the door quietly behind him. Through the door, the tall man could hear various orders and commands being shouted by his subordinate. Smiling lightly, the man sat back in his chair and waited for things to happen...====== An explosion rocked the skyscraper's upper floors as all the windows on the 40th floor blew out and someone jumped out of what used to be the window. Papers blew out with the wind and the man fell, along with the millions of shards of glass towards the pavement. People stared up from the pavement and nearly got eyefulls of glass. As the man dove for the pavement he brought his arm up to his face. He pressed a few buttons on his metallic arm-guard, and quickly spread his arms and legs out in a spread eagle position. Immediately four spider-like appendages sprouted from the pack he had on his back; two of them quickly made their way down to his feet and the others out to his hands. He grabbed the handles on the appendages and slipped his feet into the footholds as a large black cloth extended and spread out from the pack on his back. it immediately caught the air and the man nearly stopped in mid air. As he glided above the rooftops of uptown Steel Port, he smiled. His ear buzzed and someone's voice came through his built in headset, "Barrett can you hear me? It's Relativity. Was the mission successful?" Even though the wind whipped past his head and would normally eliminate any hearing ability, he heard the woman perfectly, as it was transmitting directly through his ear and to his brain. "Yeah boss, it went off without a hitch. The sonic bomb works like a charm, blew out all the windows easily. Same with the glider; though if that one didn't you'd be scraping what's left of me off the street. I have the package, proceeding to rendezvous point beta." With an inaudible click, he stopped the communicating and turned the glider slightly, heading for a point somewhere in the downtown district of Steel Port.====== Nora sighed as Barrett stopped communicating; she figured he had everything under control. She spun in her chair and smiled before saying, "Pretty successful test run wouldn't you say Exadi? He's got the package, and in record time too." Nora was the only person in the large underground room, but still a voice answered her, it was female, slightly computerized, and coming from the large screen Nora had in front of her, "Yes Nora, however, operational success will only be achieved once Barrett returns here with the package. It was not wise to send him out without any form of backup, as they will surely send people after him." Nora smiled and laughed lightly, replying to her advanced AI, "You underestimate Barrett, Exadi. He'll come through just fine, I'm sure he'll be able to beat whoever comes his way. The car is in position and waiting for him; all he's gotta do is lose whoever is following him and get back her, simple." Nora spun in her chair again and sighed, watching the map of Steel Port as a small arrow tracked Barrett's current position.

Charlie was jogging, her heart matching the beat of the music blasting through her ear buds. She didn't miss a beat as her phone started ringing, just took her phone out of her pocket and slid her finger along the screen. "Charlie." she said into the mouthpiece.
"Charlie? It's Rosie. There was some sort of explosion downtown. Come into the station and the Chief will brief you. Shower first. We're calling every one else not already on a case in."
Rosie didn't wait for Charlie to acknowledge what she said. Rosie knew Charlie well enough to know she was already changing her route and jogging to the station. Thirty minutes later, she had showered, met with the Chief, and was on her way to the scene where she would meet with the team already there for full details on the situation.

Sitting in the room of his little corner, he feels at ease while listening to Sakura Sakura a Japanese folk song that seemed to be the only thing calming himself down. The pain from his heart grew all so dark the thoughts began to shroud his clear mind as he began to awaken from his deep thoughts. Looking to garden just out of his room he looks at it while looking towards the sky. Nothing was the same nothing different. While using his hands and his body he twisted upwards and stood firm while tidying himself up before heading back to the kitchen to grab a water bottle with ginseng tea. Placing his hands in front of him rolled inside in both sleeves he started to think most of his time has been sitting. "It's Quiet..." as Mani said while kicking the door open he began to butt it back to close it. Finding himself at the fridge he opened it up and began to find his drink on the near side. "....." before taking the bottle he unsleeved his right hand and grabbed the bottle and closed the fridge door while taking out his other hand he untwisted the cap and began to take a gulp while taking a seat in a chair near the table.

The sounds of rounds colliding with the preset targets could be heard throughout the shooting range. Vincent stared down the sight of his pistol, releasing the now empty magazine which fell with a clacking noise to the counter infront of him. Quickly he replaced it and began firing again. As he finished the set he reached up placing his hand on the earmuffs that were placed over his ears "All clear!" He shouted as he placed his weapon on the counter. Looking at the targets he could see that he had indeed hit it, his aim wasn't flawless, he could see that 2 of his last 8 rounds had hit the target but not in the areas he was aiming for. He looked down, picking up the casings he placed them in a disposal bin, which would be gathered up later. He slid a full magazine back into his pistol and placed it on the holster on his waist. He smiled and took a step back as a man who had been firing next to him said. "Nice shooting there tex!" He was a new recruit, his annoyingly apparant accent gave away his more southern origins. b"It needs work. But it was a good set." he said as he headed towards the door. Now that he was done with his firing practice he had a clear schedule, he wasn't on a current contract but he was always on call. As he headed back towards the dining facility he grabbed a plate. Loading it up with a set of potatoes and slices grilled chicken he took a seat at one of the tables. Grabbing a fork he began eating as he observed the tv infront of him. Staring at it he could see it was the news that lit up the pristine screen. He sighed, he hated the news, if they weren't busy spreading worthless news they were spreading aggrevating news.

The silent steps that tapped the floor, a young woman appeared from the above and downward into a slash splitting a straw dummy with a strong but calm attack. From the others in the training room felt a strong aura from her not the type that says I'm dangerous but the type of a killer. After reading behind Moa's background she found herself to be rather distant. She didn't like working with people that she doesn't variably know. Sheathing her Sougen in its sheathe, she began to walk over to the towel near the bench and grabbed it while wiping off the sweat. Looking over to her far left side she glared at the group watching her and started off that direction, seeing the group split she opened the door and closed it while having the group fall to their knees while holding it in to show manliness. Showing no fear towards her, they sat down sighing in relief that she was gone. Finding herself walking back to her courtiers she looked over with her left eye to see Vincent eating a big bulky meal as always and started to sigh while walking towards her door, she began to turn the knob and began to open it while walking through. Closing the door and locking it she started to get a formal wear for her. Few minutes later Moa comes out after unlocking the door she slowly closes it and locks it from the outside. Taking her blade with her she began to walk into the dining room to grab a cup of coffee, putting half and half and 2 spoons of sugar while stirring she sat down to the far side of the table near the window. Taking her time she began to take a sip and placing it back down to rest.

"The answer is 3,256" a young girl's voice could be heard. "Why yes Ingrid you are correct" the teacher had responded. The young girl known as Ingrid had long flowing white hair and bright red eyes, and tanned skin. She wore modest clothing and sat with correct posture. The school bell soon rang and Ingrid gathered her things and made her way down the hallway. She was in the 8th grade and was seen as prodigy. This wasn't the case though, she was over 300 years old and only appeared to be a child. You see Ingrid was a mutant, gifted with a power, she only stayed in school to keep her profile low.
Ingrid owned half of the business in the city and constantly stayed making constant business decisions. She soon received an alert on her phone. Barrett had completed his mission. Smiling she walked out of the school, she would return later or the next day, Ingrid pretty much did whatever she wanted. She walked around the building as she pressed her back against the wall. Her shadow began to expand and got darker as it began to surround her and she disappeared from sight. She soon emerged into the same room as Nora. "Hello Nora" she said as she took a seat near her and took out some notes she had been working on.

Nora spun around in her chair to face Ingrid as she emerged in her lab. "Ingrid! How are you today? I assume you know that Barrett is on his way back. How was class? Boring as usual I assume." Nora fixed her hair in front of her face again and smiled, standing and moving to her work bench to work on a gadget or two. "I wish you wouldn't just appear in here without telling me though, who knows what I could be doing or working on. Like this thing for instance. My latest but not greatest invention!" Nora held out a spherical object with large glowing lights on it; it had a line cutting it in half, as though it was supposed to open up. "I call it a blade ball. It has a small anti-gravity module in it to keep in at about waist height, and a couple of propulsion airflow jets to move it around. When it deploys, it opens up and on the inside is a motor with four extremely sharp blades on a rotating cylinder. You throw it, it raises up, opens up and floats around cutting people to bits!" Nora set it back down on the work bench and tinkered with it a little more, humming to herself while doing so. The large computer screen beeped and Exadi's voice spoke to Nora and Ingrid, "Barrett has just reached the rendezvous point, he is currently on his way back here. Might I suggest preparing the decryption module Nora?" Nora glanced up from her device and replied, "Yeah Exadi, you can do that, it'll be good for your decryption programs to see if they can break through a 1280 bit encrypted firewall on that thing." Nora stood and spun the orb around on her finger like a basketball for a moment before throwing it into the small testing area she had near her workbench. The orb hit the ground once and immediately floated up, opened its casing and four extremely sharp blades spun in a circle as the orb floated around the small testing area. After a minute or so, the orb slowed to a stop, retracted the blades and fell to the floor. Nora sighed and picked the thing up, putting it back on the workbench and saying, "Need a new power source for this blasted thing, never lasts longer than a minute..." Nora grumbled to herself, nearly ignoring Ingrid completely.

While taking his time drinking the rest of his tea, he started to toss it over to the recycle bin and began to stand up, stretching a bit before heading to the training room that hes so fond of. Looking over to the door he opened it slightly and closed it after he was done, taking his view to the far left he began to head to that direction, walking towards a blacken and white room which he remembered quite well, but passing it he ended up near the facility where he opened the metal door and walked right in. "Alright, lets see..." looking around the empty building he could remember the marks he left after a wild run. "Alright" cracks his shoulders a bit, he began to illuminate white energy around him as he began to change form into lightning. Twisted Fates two sided Joker. "Lets begin with a bit of pace." as he picked up a rock from the side of the facility he threw it towards the top, chasing it with high speed he appeared in front of it and threw it to the far left and chased it, while repeating this his momentum began to surge.

The house was a large one because the person who owned it and lived there was a prominent person in the society of Steel Port. The sound of the strings of a violin wafted through the spacious halls. The halls were devoid of any people, but if someone had been there to hear the music they would have said it was a beautiful song. At the end of the hall was a large wooden door that had been left slightly ajar by the single person standing in the room.
The room behind the door was the setting of a library. This library also functioned as a private study office for the primary owner of the mansion. If a person peeked past the door that had been left ajar, they would be able to see the shelves of books and other decorative items. They would also be able to see a tall young man in his twenties holding the very violin that had been creating the music. He stood with his feet in the light that was streaming from the window, but his upper torso and the violin were shaded by the top edge of the window cutting off the path of the light. This young man with dark black hair wore a well-pressed collared shirt with long black pants. The top button of the collar was open, but he didn't mind that too much. This young man was well-known as one of the most wealthy and prominent business men in Steel Port as he owned a large portion of the city's marketing system.
His name, you ask? Patience, dear reader, it will be given in due time.
As the song ended on its tenuous note, Mattias Kaysen slowly opened his eyes to where they remained half-lidded. When the strains of music had finally died, he turned to put the violin back into its case which sat on a small table nearby. After closing the case with the violin inside, Mattias put it onto a shelf along the wall next to a small line of books.

"...and that is one example of how the A / Not A system continues social discrimination" the teacher at the front of the room stated as she finished her lecture for the day. Remy shook his headed as he was brought from his thoughts. He had spent about half the class spacing out fortunately the person sitting next to him, Lisa, was a roomate of his and he could borrow her notes if needed. Realizing the class was over he quickly grabbed his stuff and headed out the door. It was only a short while later he felt someone tap his shoulder, he turned to see it was Lisa "Hey, you seemed a bit out of it today, you feeling alright?" She asked. Remy nodded "Yeah, I'm fine I just think I need to get a little more sleep is all" He said. Lisa nodded "Ah I see, well don't let class work keep you from sleeping too much" She said. Remy mentally sighed thinking if only it were homework. He then smiled a bit "So lunch?" he asked. Lisa nodded and they headed for a local place to eat. Remy and Lisa were both students at the local college and lived in the same house with two other people just off of campus.

Ingrid looked at Nora as she began to babble on, only to get lost in her own thoughts. She needed to close out a few business deals here in Steel Port in order to gain more control in the economic market of things. When Nora had finished her rambling Ingrid's crimson eyes met with Nora's. "You need a power source, I can conjure you one...on one deal. You allow me to duplicate the original with a spell and I'm able to sale these to the black market. I have a rival in this city who is trying to fight for dominance and I will not be put out of the game so easily" she said adjusting the dress that hugged her small framed body. "We'll sale these to some of the corrupt business in this city, who may use these to intimidate people or protect their company, then we can be able to buy them out as soon as I receive their money" she said with a half smile.

Arianna Scarlett Cross
“Two…orders of….chicken….burgers….extra…salad…” Asleep on the job was something greatly frowned upon by most upstanding citizens…and even more so if the person asleep was an on duty cop in the heart of a city that was in constant conflict. “And….a large….espresso….please…” Arianna Scarlett Cross was still a newbie in Steel Port but her eagerness to learn the ropes as quickly as possible was earning her a nice little reputation already. She had spent all night going other cases that had never been solved due to lack of evidence or the eye witnesses’ unwillingness to cooperate. Her curiosity was almost never quenched and her choice of late night reading material was merely an extension of that. “Mmm…this burger…is truly scrumsious…” Unfortuanatly….in reality Arianna was merely munching on her badge…And this scene continued up until the Rose the chief slammed her hand down on Arianna’s desk. “Ack?! What!? Who?! Sonnovabit-----Oh…Rose…Ahem…” Arianna’s pale cheeks flushed a light pink in embarrassment as she stared up into Rose’s less then amused eyes. “Late…Late night reading..” She muttered in a lame attempt at apologizing.
Ten minutes later Arianna was out on the street after being scolded and briefed about some sort of explosion that had taken place down town. While today was Arianna’s turn to do desk work Rose had thought it best for Arianna to ‘wake up’ and get some fresh air by heading down town. Of course, looking around the city it was hard to think that fresh air existed in such a place. “Jeez…She didn’t have to shout so much…She looked like a dog chewing on a wasp at one point..” While Arianna was all for following the rules and knew damn well that she had been in the wrong, she still felt the need to mutter snarky comments about her Chief. Of course, the young dark red haired woman looked up to her superiors and all that other crap, she was just a bit…unruly at times. Pushing her embarrassment and scolded self to one side, Arianna began to wonder who or what it was that had caused the down town explosion. While most people who lived in town would automatically jump the gun and declare it was a mutant who caused this, Arianna had to keep a level mind and look into this with no predetermined judgement. “Nothing like the expectance of a surprise” She said out loud in an almost sing song voice.

Nora chuckled to herself and turned around to face Ingrid, smiling lightly, "Now Ingrid, what sort of inventor-slash-supergenius-slash-villain would I be if I had someone else sort out my problems? Rest assured, I'll be able to work something out, and then we can put an inferior model on the market, while keeping the best model for ourselves. It'll allow us to 'upgrade' the older models for a significant chunk of cash." Nora set the prototype back on her workbench and thought for a moment. While she thought she paced around for a bit, tapping her chin with her finger and pondering what she could do. She stopped on her heels and turned towards Ingrid then asked, "Why are you competing with this guy? Why not go into a partnership of some sort, you two could be all 'ruling the city together' and stuff. It'd certainly get things done quicker, and if it was you two working together, there's the whole, unstoppable superpower thing. It'd be fun I bet. I could probably get you in contact with the guy if you want..." Nora let her sentence trail and headed back over to her computers, hopping into her chair and spinning back around to the computer. "Exadi, how goes the prototypes in production at the moment? Just visual feedback please." Nora asked the AI, who began showing various pictures and graphs and notes and details about whatever it was that Nora was currently working on. "Good all prototypes at expected production progress, thank you Exadi. keep me posted on the HK-47 project please. And inform Rissa that we're still going out to dinner tonight, and that I want her looking her finest." Nora smiled and spun in her chair back around to face Ingrid and asked, "So, what do you think? Would it be wise to contact this guy?"

Barrett drove fast down the streets in downtown, he had interfaced with the car's navigation system and could tell where he needed to go. He quickly turned a corner and headed down a side street; then disaster struck. There was a redheaded woman walking in the street, and because of how fast he was going, he had almost no time to avoid her. Barrett immediately reacted, slamming on the breaks and turning the wheel at a sharp angle. The black sports car skidded across the pavement before crashing into another car parked on the side of the road. Barrett's car immediately flipped over and smashed into a nearby brick wall of a building. Upside down and bleeding from his forehead, Barrett unbuckled his seat-belt and grabbed the case he had with him. Repositioning himself inside the crushed car, he kicked out the windshield and slid out of the car. He slowly got to his feet and sighed, breathing heavily. <********... She's definitely going to take me apart for this mishap..." Barrett sighed and checked the damage on the car; it wasn't completely totaled, but it would need to be repaired if it wanted to actually move any time soon. Sighing again, the cyborg leaned against the brick wall and caught his breath, trying to think of how he was going to get home now.
