(This story is in no way cannon. This is what Grauen Kerzi believes—it is only partially based in real events.)

Prolouge: And Then There Was Light

Long ago, two men wrote of fantastical beasts by candelight. Every night when one of the brothers lit the candle, the candle watched. The flame of her eyes flickered with interest as she listened, and the might of her flame grew ever larger fed by their tales. She fed on fear. Ironic since people cling to light from fear of the darkness, but it is light that creates the shadows.

One day, the brothers were done with their tales and tried to exstinguish the candlelight for the final time. But she had fed on their stories until she could not be snuffed. And thus the “horror candle” Grauen Kerzi was born.

When first she opened her eyes, she was greeted with unbearable agony. Unused to light, the brightness was too much for her. For long hours, she lay in searing pain until the night fell and she could open the embers of her eyes. She could feel the ever changing stories of the brothers playing across her coat, shadows and remembrances of horrors of bygone ages.

Born of light, she was destined to live in the darkness. There is light in the cavern of her chest, but only…only so the shadows can play.

Chapter One: Flicker

For days, she slept during the day and journeyed at night. It was kind of odd trying to figure out things. The world didn't quite make sense. This was not the world that she had come to accept. She was a candle, a flickering light that was trying to figure out how to keep burning. She didn't want to go out, she wanted to catch fire.

But there was so little she knew, so very little. Fantastic tales. Yet, somehow she knew they were all true. That was the point of her existence after all. From tales to terror. That would be her story. She'd find her purpose. She'd find...whatever she was looking for, whatever that happened to be.

It wasn't long before she heard the legend of the books. It sounded like her master's books, the books of Grimm. She listened to the rumors and the legends. She needed to find them.

All in all, it came down to this. There were books, claimed to be written by the Masters themselves. The stories she once heard as her candle flickered over the parchment as they wrote. But what was more, there was more stories that she hadn't heard. Those were the ones she needed--she didn't exactly know why, but she needed them.

These books, it was said could be opened by one worthy--but no one else. She would of course be able to open them. Naturally they were going to be hers. Who else but her would be able to open it?

The problem was to find them. Apparently, not many knew where they were. There was an old stallion who said to know where they were. All she had to do was make it worth his while to tell her.

***

It took a week for her to find him, and a month for her to stalk him enough to approach before it felt safe. When she got to him, he wouldn't tell her where the books were. He challenged her to do things first. He taught her how to start a fire, how to manipulate the shadows and inspire terror.

It took months of reigning in her anger before he gave her the books. He'd had them all along. She could feel the rage burning up inside of her. She was angry he had not given them to her in the first place.

She left in the middle of the night, setting fire to his home with him still inside and the books in tow.

It wasn't until an hour later, when his home had burned to ashes that she discovered the books were not hers to open.

She was powerful. She had learned that food alone did not sustain her. It was fear that she needed to feast on. It empowered her, made her that much capable of doing whatever she pleased.

She used these feeds to make her stronger and stronger. But no matter how often she fed or how long, she could not open the books. Nothing about them seemed available to her. Every time she tried to open the books, nothing happened. It was as if they were a locked door that she could not force down and she did not have the key to. It reminded her of a story she'd heard once about a girl standing in front a door that she could not open, the memory of the phrase that would open it like a memory on the edge of the girl's mind. A memory she could touch, but not quite grasp.

...

She roamed for days, for weeks, and for months trying to find a way to open it. How does one open a book exactly that seems to hate you? That seems to taunt you by it's pages fluttering loosely until you go to open the spine.

It was then that she found the stallion who would offer her the information she needed if only she did him a small service.

...

Horus moved away from the stack of books after having devoured more of them. He'd found something that he thought quite compelling, some stories written in other languages about faeries, about other worlds, about all types of magic that existed outside of his realm of knowledge. If only it were all true, if only it meant something. If only it were real.

But none of the things he wanted to be true were ever real. Life had a way of disappointing, shielding you from the things that coudl be amazing if only they existed. But then maybe that was part of their charm in that they didn't exist.

That was a lie. It tasted wrong on his tongue. He wished all the stories were real. He wished life wasn't so...mundane.

He laid down his rest, perturbed perhaps that nothing special or even interesting seemed to happen in the lands of the Kawani these days.

Chapter Two: Shadows on the Walls

Heavy sleep drug Horus down...down...down into it's murky depths. For a moment , he struggled against it's pull--it seemed almost unnatural. It seemed almost wrong and intangible. All kinds of words where whispered to him as the canvas shifted like grim figures on a wall. Luminous eyes like candles gawked at him in the darkness and shadows sway and danced. Wolves of smoke and ash moved crazily around.

He could feel the hot taste of fire, the burning of her eyes. He did not know how it was a she, but he knew none the less. What was happening?

The dark room took shape. The edges were unclear but the middle started to become defined and he could make out a pedestal in the middle. On the book was written in smooth cursive, "The Lost Isles."

The cover was green he noticed as he got closer. The pages seem to glow around the edges and transform and illuminate. He reached up with a claw and touched the cover.

A dark energy surged through him and he could hear a voice like a whisper say, "But all the stories are true...

He dug his claws in and flipped the first page, immediately captivated by the tale of "The Grimm".

...

She had returned to him the article he had required. He'd lead her to a dark cavern and spoke words of some ancient forgotten tongue before having her lean over the a bowl of water.

Instead of seeing her reflection, she was looking back at a very young stallion. Just past being a teenager. His hair was long and dark like some fallen angel. There was something cold and shrewd in his eyes. His eyes moved toward her and she knew that he had truly seen her.

She could not tear her eyes away.

There on the table in the middle of the room laid the very same book that was in the bag she carried with her everywhere. His claws gripped it and it opened with ease pouring out it's secrets to him.

She felt a sharp hiss escape her lips before she said, "All the stories are true..."
