Another night and another youma to fight. Valhalla figured that he would eventually get used to these kinds of patterns, but it was easier said than done. No matter what he tried to do, he couldn't seem to shake the fact that these youma liked to appear out of nowhere and usually in the least convenient times.
He'd been lucky tonight though. He hadn't been walking his dog and he hadn't had a huge bag of books from the library with him. No, instead it was just a normal patrol around the neighborhood after finishing up his homework and wanting to make sure everything was okay for a few hours. It was the best part about living by himself — there wasn't a roommate to worry about having to explain every time he came in late and looking worse for wear.
What would make the night even better would be if this youma wasn't trying to hard to break his bones with its hooves.
Valhalla stumbled backwards into the brick wall of a building as he attempted to get out of the demon horse's reach as it reared back with angry grunts and growls. He was pretty sure that normal horses didn't growl. And this wasn't anything like a normal horse, anyway. It was thin and skeletal, wispy smoke billowed around its body where its mane and tail would have been, its dark body blending in with the night.
He lept to the side as it charged him, but he was pretty sure he wasn't going to get rid of this guy without finding some kind of weapon, first.

As evenings started to get longer it was starting to become something of a regular tradition for Arian to stop and grab a cup of take-out coffee before powering up and hitting the patrol beat as Athene for a few hours each night. Most nights he even got to finish the coffee.
It looked like tonight wasn't going to be one of those nights though, as it didn't take long for him to pick up on the the aura after powering up. Actually he thought there might be two auras – both close by – one with the sort of feel that made him think youma.
Athene took a few sips of the coffee before glumly discarding the cup to a nearby dust bin and reluctantly – he'd just wasted a perfectly good cup of coffee after all – heading in the direction he thought the youma-type aura was coming from.
It wasn't hard for Athene to find the youma – not when after a few moments of walking down a close-by alley the dark-haired senshi was able to hear it's growls.
He hadn't been expecting a horse-like monster though – certainly not with growls like that. After all horses were not supposed to growl – not even demon-looking ones.
Athene bit his lip as the 'horse' charged at something, his eyes trying to find something to lob at the monster. An empty bottle probably wouldn't cut it this time round – not even if he was lucky enough to find an unbroken one.

The youma missed in its attack, but just barely, leaving Valhalla to scramble to his feet and nearly colliding with the senshi that he didn't even realize was there. It'd been so distracted by the youma that he didn't even notice the other power source!
"Jeez, watch out!" he sputtered in surprise, grabbing onto the senshi's shoulders to try and pull him away from the youma that was now rearing back and changing directions. "Move, move, move!" he shouted, reaching out to try and shove the young man out of the way as the horse-creature barreled towards them. Valhalla lept out of the way, but he didn't know what had become of the senshi he'd only seen once or twice before. Or at least he was pretty sure he'd seen the guy before.
He'd just never had the chance to talk to him. Or even get a name.
"It likes to try and kick," he called to wherever the senshi ended up, hoping he was okay. "Watch out for is hooves!" In the meantime, he was going to try and find something to hit the thing with, before it decided to charge again.

Athene had found a small piece of rubble that he might do the trick and moved closer to lob it at the horse youma – at least that had been the plan – instead, however Athene had found himself bumping hard into the source of the second aura.
It happened pretty quickly – one minute Athene was being told to 'watch out', the next he was being yelled at to move. The dark-haired senshi managed to get out little more than a “Wha...” as he was suddenly shoved sideways by the person he'd bumped into, the piece of rubble falling out of his grip as his hands instinctively fell forward in an attempt to break his fall.
Trying to roll as he hit the ground Athene felt the movement dislodge his glasses, the frames falling off just as moments later the youma charged past close enough that the short senshi felt the displacement of wind as it moved.
The piece of rubble was momentarily forgotten in favour of frantically scrabbling around for the glasses and Athene breathed a sigh of relief as his right closed round the edge of the frame – the unbroken frame – for a moment he thought the demon-horse thingy might have broken it.
As Athene slipped his glasses back on, he thought he heard the other call out something about the youma liking to kick. "Great oh great..." he muttered, the words tailing off as a thought occurred to him. Hang on where the heck did that thing just go?

Valhalla watched as the youma searched around for who it wanted to attack, and he winced as it seemed to turn after the senshi when he didn't get up and run as soon as he probably should have. It was okay, though... he was just looking for his glasses. Right...
He felt his face drain of color as the senshi searched the ground and finally found what he was looking for. Maybe he should think about investing in a chain to keep his glasses around his neck, even if they did fall off?
"s**t, get out of the way!" he called down, quickly snatching up a rock that had been lying by the edge of the building and hurling it at the horse's head. The youma reared back in anger, bucking and kicking as it spun around to find the source of its attacker.
The page backed up to try and get it away from the senshi, but it didn't seem to care and it turned around right after him. Well, crap, that was going to suck. Valhalla knew he couldn't get around fast enough to block an attack from the youma, even if he wanted to. "Look out!" he called, wishing the young man was a bit quicker on his feet than he seemed to be. Was he totally new at this?? He should at least know how to get out of the way of a charging youma by now. Valhalla could only distract the creature for so long!
He picked up another rock to throw at it, but it had even less effect than the first time. Valhalla cursed under his breath as his eyes scoured the ground for some kind of weapon with which to hit the youma.

For a moment – after remembering about it – Athene had contemplated maybe trying to find the piece of rubble that he had dropped. It was a brief thought, one that quickly cut off as he was yelled at to get out of the way and look out, his face paling as it dawned on the dark-haired senshi that he was the demon horse-thingy's target of choice.
Athene probably wouldn't have made it out of the way in time, if the horse hadn't paused to rear angrily at something – as it was he barely managed to move out of the way in time – half-wishing as he flung himself to the side that he still had that piece of rubble.
“Thanks” the words were called out in what Athene hoped was the other's direction as he picked himself up off the ground. It occurred to the senshi as he did so that mayhaps having some sort of plan would be a good idea – one that went beyond simply trying to fling himself out of the way and hoping for the best.
At least though the dark-haired senshi had picked himself up off the ground faster this time round. Maybe he was learning.

Oh good, it looked as though the little senshi was okay. At least for now. Valhalla could only do so much to help him out when there was a youma trying to attack them.
"Grab a weapon or something!" he called over to the senshi, trying not to sound as bossy as he thought he sounded. He wasn't trying to push the guy around, but it was obvious that he needed a little bit more help than he'd expected! "Don't you have magic??" Senshi all had magic, right? He didn't have magic. He had a compass, which was tucked safely under his belt since there was really no use for it at the moment.
The youma didn't seem to be drawn away from the senshi, as much as Valhalla was trying to distract it, and the page watched in horror as the horse-demon charged at the senshi once more.
What the hell was he supposed to do if this guy died?? How was he supposed to live with himself??
Valhalla picked up another rock from the ground, throwing it at the youma but to no avail.

It just wasn't his day – first there was the loss of a perfectly decent cup of coffee, then there was the fact that he'd managed to become some demon horse youma-thingy's target of choice and then there was the stranger – much as Athene was grateful that he'd shoved him out of the way of the demon horse – the dark-haired senshi couldn't say that (in his opinion) the other's bossy 'suggestions' were making him feel better about the day. In fact Athene was rather starting to wonder who or what he'd managed to annoy so badly given the way his evening was shaping up.
Biting his lip at the other's question about magic, as it happened the dark-haired senshi did have magic (or as he called it a senshi ability) and it was something that might be useful in maybe giving them a breathing space – at least if it worked – Athene's luck with his senshi attack tended to be variable.
Still an unreliable attack was probably (marginally) better than continuing to try and dodge the youma horse all evening, so – while trying very hard not to think on the kind of damage the youma horse's hooves could do – Athene clenched his right fist while raising his left as he called out the four words of his senshi ability “Blue beads of Nazar!”
After a moment's pause – the (to Athene) familiar glowing ball made up of what looked to be insubstantial-looking beads formed and floated in front of his upraised hand and biting his lip anxiously the dark-haired senshi directed the attack at the youma – a youma which was in his opinion waaay too close for comfort.
[ooc note – Athene can use his senshi attack 3 times, but has to post 3 times between attack attempts (re-charge period). It can only hit one target, but if it hits then that target will be trapped for 15 secs/ 1post. Athene's attack only affects targets going after Athene specifically, it auto-fails otherwise]

"There you go!" Valhalla let out a sigh of relief when the senshi used some kind of magic to keep the youma at bay, which reared up and almost toppled over in surprise of the attack. While he was more than happy to take a moment to breathe, he knew it was only a matter of time before the youma regained its senses.
There was a parking meter that had been dislodged from its home on the sidewalk from all the chaos the horse was causing, and Valhalla didn't hesitate to reach for something he could swing. The metal bar in his hands, the page rushed to the senshi's aid, not sure how long he would be able to hold the monster back with some blue light and what looked like little pellets of some kind.
With a sickening crack, Valhalla swung the meter around and into the horse's leg, causing it to screech in pain and pulled back and away from the two of them.
For the moment at least. Its leg was definitely broken, but it still had three good ones to crush them with, and teeth to rip at them.
"I'm Valhalla. Page of Jupiter," he quickly introduced, lifting the parking meter over his shoulder as he waited for the youma to circle back around to them. Valhalla eyed the senshi for a moment, having opened his mouth to suggest taking the meter to use as a weapon, but the darker haired teen seemed a bit more, uh... scrawny than he was... Maybe he should stick to using magic. "You okay?"

It worked? Precious moments of Athene's attack was wasted as the dark-haired senshi stared at the trapped youma in stunned surprise.
The sound of cracking bone made him jump slightly – the source of the other aura at least seemed to be taking advantage of the brief opening that his power had given them.
Focusing on the other aura, Athene gave the brown-haired man a nod “I'm fine thank you.” Valhalla wasn't the first page he'd come across – well Camelot was a Squire now – but he was definitely younger than Camelot and unlike the Squire was wearing an outfit that looked like something a Viking would wear sans the helmet.
“I'm Sailor Athene, I'm...” A growl from the youma broke him off mid-sentence, a reminder that the beads making up the barrier wouldn't hold the thing forever, were in fact already fading away. Another piece of rubble was nearby and biting his lip Athene paused to scooped it up – okay it wasn't a parking meter but to be honest the dark-haired senshi wasn't sure he'd have the strength to lift something like that much less actually swing it.

Valhalla eyed the senshi curiously in the brief moments they had before the youma started breaking free of the barrier made of bead. He didn't seem all that used to fighting, especially with that surprised expression he was wearing in response to the attack actually working.
That wouldn't do... This kid was going to end up getting himself killed... Not that he was that young, but he still looked like he was in high school.
"What are you going to do with that?" he wondered, glancing down at the rubble he was picking up before looking at the meter in his own hands. This guy could use a better weapon, at least to be able to defend himself. No, he wasn't really sure that he'd be able to swing it with the same strength and accuracy, but that was only because Valhalla was used to swinging bats. While he wasn't that fantastic at hitting baseballs, he could at least hit a larger target.
"Here," he said suddenly, although keeping an eye on the youma as it began to break free. "Take this and swing for its head." Valhalla pushed the meter into Athene's hands, taking the piece of rubble from him in exchange. The meter shouldn't be too heavy, and it definitely wouldn't be all that heavy while they were powered. It was just a matter of hitting the youma in the right place, now.
"I'll keep it distracted. Use your magic again if you can, but take a swing or two if it gets too close."
Valhalla leapt back then, taking the rubble and hurling it at the youma as the last bead finally disappeared and it lunged towards Athene, eyes blazing.

Athene wasn't sure that Valhalla was expecting an answer, but he gave one anyway “I was going to throw it at the youma.” Athene told Valhalla quietly. “Chucking stuff works” he thought about it before adding honestly “At least sometimes it does.” Well that and he'd been lucky to have Camelot's help the last couple of times.
The dark-haired senshi wasn't expecting the page to grab his piece of rubble and almost practically push the parking meter into his hands, almost managing to drop the thing before his mind caught up with the fact that actually – it wasn't quite as heavy as he was expecting.
“I'll do my best...” There wasn't time to say anything further, not with the now freed youma lunging back into the fray and charging at him with an expression in its eyes that Athene didn't want to think too hard on.
Gulping he flailed out with the meter when the youma was close enough in an attempt to hit something significant.

Just an attempt?? That's all he was going to try??
Valhalla stared in disbelief as the senshi not only swung, but managed to hit the youma squarely between its eyes. The horse creature seemed to sway in shock for a moment, before exploding into a pile of dust.
"s**t..." he breathed, forgetting to shut his mouth. "If you're not on a baseball team already, we need to get you on one..." Even if it was a one time lucky swing, a little bit of training and practice could get this kid up to a pretty decent standing. Hell, Chris's batting average sucked, but at least he could hit big things. Usually.
"Nice job, Athene," he said, slowly making his way over to where the senshi was standing, glancing around to make sure there weren't any other youma lurking around to attack them. "Seriously..."
He was surprised, happily so, that his first impressions had been wrong about the young man. At first he thought that Athene was more likely to run away than stand and fight, but it put an extra spring in Valhalla's step to see him not only fighting but dusting youma as well.
"Are you the senshi of something? Your magic, I mean..." he added, wondering if it was probably not a good time to get chatty when they were both sweaty and out of breath from fighting a youma. Or at least he was sweaty and out of breath.

Athene stared at the parking meter in his hand and then at the spot where the youma had once been with a slightly stunned expression on his face. The dark-haired senshi hadn’t really expected to do much good. Maybe hopefully distract the youma – yes – and if really lucky maybe get some sort of hit in. Outright dust the thing? No.
Athene missed the page’s comment about a baseball team, but would have politely disagreed about the other’s take on his ability. Although not quite the same, the dark-haired senshi had played a bit of rounders during summer PE lessons at his old school and had never been more than average at the game. He did catch the other’s compliment on the job done though and gave Valhalla a relieved nod and admitted “I guess I got lucky, although I’m not complaining.” As if realising that he was still holding the parking meter in his hand, he carefully set it down adding “Thank you for your help with it.”
At the taller page’s query about his senshi powers Athene nodded “I’m the Senshi of beads.”

Hey! People got lucky all the time. There were instances in which he thought he'd never beat the thing and then... one well placed hit. POOF. Not that it happened often, but once in a blue moon, maybe.
Valhalla stared at the young man upon mention of his sphere. "Beads, huh?" He'd heard stranger things in his time as a knight, so he figured senshi of various objects weren't as surprising as senshi of extinct or mythological animals.
"Well, you did great, and I'd be happy to help out any time," he nodded in acknowledgment, grinning lightly. "Sorry about all the yelling earlier. I get mean when I'm stressed," he explained, although he hardly thought it was a good enough excuse for his behavior.
Either way, not that the youma had been dusted, there was no reason to hang around and attract others to them. "Better get out of here before another shows up," he said with a grimace, glancing around to the nearby alleys as if another would show up just by thinking about it. "Thanks again..."
The page took a few steps back into the shadows, lifting a hand for a goodbye wave to the senshi, before disappearing. Overall, it was a pretty decent night... Now he had to worry about homework.
