I was surprised in my psychology class today (November 3, 2011) when I was taking a survey about sex. Each question was to be marked true, false, or depends. What surprised me, was that one of the questions read, "Homosexuality is a choice." I put an F for false with an exclamation mark, and felt secure in my obviously true answer.
It wasn't until the teacher read the correct responses to each question that I was surprised and also offended, when my teacher said, "It is a choice, true." I was instantly overcome with feelings of anger, betrayal (for some odd reason) and utter disappointment and disbelief.
How could it be a choice? I never chose to be attracted to multiple genders, but then again, the question didn't say "Pansexuality is a choice." So, how could I defend myself? And others? But I do know, that I never asked for this. It's not a fad for me. It's not a rebellious teenage statement. It's who I am, and just as I didn't ask or choose to be the ethnicities or gender I am.
What are your views on this topic? Is it a choice? Did any of you choose your sexual orientation? Do you believe people choose to be gay (or whatever sexual orientation that differs from heterosexuality).
