I've heard quite a lot of talk that stretching before doing any sort of exercise is bad for your muscles.
True or false? Is there any proof, other than what my boss says repeatedly with; "Do you see a lion or cheetah stretch before it chases its prey?"
Also, I'd like to be more flexible, lets discuss different kinds of stretches

I think it's different for every person. The only thing I know for sure is that you should NOT do full on stretching before exercising. You should either do a 5 minute warm-up or just don't bother stretching until after your work-out. I think this is to prevent you from pulling your muscle.
I've been in group exercise classes where the instructor made us do a warm-up march before stretching, and been in other GX classes where the instructor has us doing 1 hour cardio without pre-stretching. Always be sure to stretch at the end of your work-out though, otherwise you'll get painfully soreeee muscles the next day.
Personally, I have a weak back, so I have to stretch it a bit before running otherwise my back will feel the wrath.
As for becoming more flexible...can't help you there because I am incredibly unflexible. Losing some belly fat has helped a bit with reaching my toes though. lol

I know that stretching helps me before I exercise. It helps warm your muscles and get them loose so they're not all tight when you're doing whatever it is your doing. But you can over stretch.
As for getting more flexible, I just do lots of stretches (not too long) and a bunch of different types. It relaxes me :D I don't know how other people do it and never have asked before because I've been pretty flexible for as long as I can remember.

Before I exercise I do a ten min warm up instead of stretching. Then I go jog/power walk When I get back I do a long yoga session.
I have pulled more mussels by stretching before working out than I do with a yoga followup after working out.
Back in high school I was in dance. My coach would tell us that it was bad to stretch cold mussel. you need to warm up, stretch warm mussel for better results. I cant really remember what she said cause I have been out of school for two almost three years and I have a bad memory.

Can't really help you but for flexibility, just stretch for a bit. It helped me put my foot behind my head. Although now I can't do it. >~<

Achilles - (spelling??) - can be stretched by standing on stairs (or a step of some sort) w/o shoes on, but only putting one's toes on the stair, and carefully!!! lowering one's ankles down. its best to hold onto a railing if you're not flexible. also, only do this when your muscles are warm!

The idea is that stretching in itself warms up the muscle, if you don't stretch the muscle is tight and tends to injur easier. 8 to 10 counts per muscle that will be worked is normal.

Now, what you said makes all this I've heard about stretching before/after seem like either way you do stretch is ok and not harmful to the body. emotion_kirakira And I like the sound of that.

I think I have some worthwhile input. I dance and do martial arts so I'm actually pretty flexible. I notice that if I only stretch after warming up or after doing cardio/a workout then I'm training my muscles to only be flexible after I've broke a sweat... which I would say isn't good. So I definitely stretch some before doing any type of workout. I just can't go as deep into the stretch until afterwards when my body is warm.
You don't need to stretch much before cardio. Just do some dynamic stretches and maybe a yoga warm up. You should definitely stretch before doing any sort of strength training though. Some people like to run, jump rope, or do some other cardio for a short period of time, then stretch, then do their strength training (this is what I do before lifting weights aswell). But other than that, if I am going to be doing something that is both strength training and cardio in and of itself (like HIIT, martial arts, or dancing) I will stretch beforehand.
