No one wanted to be with Anaon right now, they wanted a reprieve of her presence; the thought stung a little, but the young filly shook it off, she could find a new friend who would put up with her crazy antics no matter what happened. Her wanderings too her farther and farther way from the area where her small family of two made camp, the constant travels would have been hard on any foal but Anaon found it exciting to constantly have a new place to attempt her mischievous ways.

A sound that did not seem to belong to the woods pulled the filly away from her internal thoughts; what she was hearing was a soft singing with soft note that carried on the light breeze. The melody was much more articulate and flowing than the songs the birds sang in the trees above, which is one of the main reasons why they stopped their chattering to listen to the beautiful sound.

Alma was new to the area and she had accidentally taken a wrong turn, which resulted in her current location in a river surrounded by colorful trees of all shapes and colors. The seal was tired from her long journey and rather than worrying about being lost, Alma decided to go to the right bank of the river where a willow tree with long hanging branches that tentatively caressed the relaxed current of water passing beneath with its green drape. It was a perfect place to relax, as the peacefulness of nature washed away her worries, a song her mother had once sung to her bubbled up out of her mouth. Each word rang out and took flight with the radiant birds above; the song was sung in a language all but forgotten in the world, this song was one of the last pieces left to remember the ancient civilization.

Mixed with the melodious voice was the soft sound of running water and a breeze whisking through the trees; as Anaon reduced the distance between her and the source of the song, she found herself growing ever more nervous. What if the singer was one of the sirens in the stories of old that lead unsuspecting land soquili to their watery graves? Anaon shivered, it was a horrible way to die. But even with her fears, the mocha colored filly continued on to the river band, where she was rewarded with a beautiful sight. An ancient willow tree with long flowing branches that hung just above the cool water of the river was just starting to bloom a vibrant green. It was vibrant, so full of life and it protected the source of the magical song.

The song came to an end and her clear brown eyes spied the small filly across the river, removed herself from the sanctuary of the willow, Alma swam to the opposite bank and gazed up at the filly. “Good morning Bright Eyes,” the words were softly spoken and presented with a smile. The seal had been traveling for many days with only the birds for company, it was nice to have another being to talk to, “Are you lost?” She decided not to admit that she too was lost and unsure of exactly where this river was located compared to where she should have been.

Anaon’s eyes widened at the sight of the brown seal, she did not look like anything specially, actuality the little seal looked a lot like the brown filly; Ana felt a fondness for the animal grow ever more so because of the similarity they shared in appearance. “Morning, uh… Ma’am?” She titled her head to the side as she considered the seal’s words, “No, I’m not lost, my mother and sister are a few minutes back that way,” she pointed to the direction of the camp with her head, “Are you from these parts? And that was a lovely song, what does it mean? Can you teach me? Oh and I am Anaon Nox, but most people just call me Ana. What is your name?”

Alma gave a bright smile at the filly's barrage of questions, Anaon Nox was a lively one, “It is nice to meet you Ana, my name is Alma and I am not from these parts, in truth I am lost myself,” she gives a small laugh, “I took a wrong turn it seems. The song that you heard me sing is an ancient one that many except those in my family have forgotten, I would love to teach it to you so it may be continued to be remembered.” The seal went silent as she tried to remember the meaning behind the words, but at the moment all that came to her was the overall context meaning of the song, “The song is about a traveler who explores lands far from his own, but at each location he has a deep ache, for he misses his loved ones, so he decides to go back home and have them see the world with him.”

“Soul! Your name means soul in Spanish! Did you know that?” Anaon was beyond excited that she was able to recognize the Spanish word. “You’re lost? I can help you find your way back if you want?” The little filly hoped that the seal would deny her offer at the moment because she had just met her and did not want her to leave just yet.

“Really?” Ana’s eyes widened, “You would teach me? Thank you so much, I can’t wait to begin!” The meaning of the song resonated with Ana, for she herself felt like the traveler, always sad and missing an important person in their life. The filly did not like admitting it to anyone, even herself, but she got lonely during her travels when she had to say goodbye to her new friends.

Alma gave the excited foal a brilliant smile, “Yes, my mother gave me that name after she realized my singing unlocked the windows to the soul and let purifying tears fall from the one who was suffering eye’s. I had another name before Alma, but it has been many moons since I have heard it or used it on myself.” The seal gave a slight nod, “Indeed, I took a wrong river somewhere it seems. You will help me? That is kind of you young one, but first, we have a music lesion to accomplish.” Alma beckoned the filly closer with her fin and then made herself comfortable, half in and half out of the river. “Have you ever tried to sing before?”

Anaon fluttered her tiny wings in excitement, “That is a lovely way to be named, I am not sure why I was named the way I was… probably because of my father, but your way is much more interesting.” The tiny filly listened to the beckoning’s of the seal and made her way to the location she motioned, “I have tried to sing, but I don’t believe it any good, my sister always says that if I keep singing I will scare away every living soul for the next five miles… I can show you what I mean, I am definitely no song bird, but I hope to be! Maybe with your help I won’t scare away those who are near with my voice?”

The little seal cocked her head to the side, “I am sure your name has some very interesting meaning and you will one day come to realize the potential of the implication. What does Anaon mean?” Alma found herself curious; she had never heard of that name before in all her travels, it had an exotic note to it when spoken. A small smile crept on to the seals countenance, “A song bird you may not be by the end of this lecture but at least, I hope, you will be able to hold a note and not scare off every creature as your sister blatantly stated to you. Now, give me a sample of what I am dealing with, sing any song that you know.”

“Underworld, my name means the Underworld, I am not sure how I can live up to that or if I really want to, the meaning represents so many things, from death to a new beginning of life, but how can I live up to that?” Her hooves shuffled in the wet dirt, creating more of a mud puddle than was there before, “Okay, well don’t say I did not warn you.” Anaon took in a deep breath, and opened her maw to sing the tune that was bouncing around in her head.

“Waaay up high, the little birds fly, and down in the nest, the little birds rest. With a wing on the left and a right on the right, the little birds slumber, all through the night. SHHH! They’re sleeping! The bright sun comes up, the dew falls away, ‘Good Morning, Good Morning!’ the little birds say.”

Anaon looked sheepishly to the seal as a couple of birds flew out of the tree because of the racket she caused, “Sorry about that!” She called to the blue birds fleeing the scene and turned her attention back to the little seal, “So?”

“I believe you will come to the meaning of your name and realize how to incorporate it into your life when the time is right, you are still young and have a life yet to live.” Alma smiled at the filly and then closed her eyes to listen to the song the foal was about to sing, it was not as bad as Anaon’s sister said, but it was pretty terrible. When the song finished Alma blinked her pale brown eyes, she had her work cut out for her, “Well, you are not as bad as your sister said, you only scared away a few birds. This will be tough, but I believe I can get you singing on key by the end of the day. Do you have anywhere to be?”

Anaon nodded her head, “Thank you Alma, I will remember that as I grow up and I will try to find out how the meaning of my name transforms me into the mare I will become.” Her bright green eyes went to follow the flight of the fleeing birds, she was really sorry that she had disturbed them from their nest with her horrible singing, her eyes brightened as she turned her gaze to the brown seal, “Really? So you think I can improve? That would be wonderful! I really love to sing, I just don’t do it because of the problem it causes to everyone’s ears… No, my family is taking a break from me for a while, I wore them out with my constant mischievous nature.”

Alma took in a deep breath, “First we need to make sure you start sounding good before we continue on with songs. I want you to repeat after me, Doe ray mee faa soo laa teee doe. But don’t put all your gut into it yet, that is when you will start screeching and scarring away the wildlife. Close your eyes and listen to the notes, and repeat after me, Doe, ray, mee, faa, soo, laa, tee, doe.” Alma watched the filly as she tried to achieve the very basic music scale.

Concentrate, concentrate, get this right, you don’t want to scare away the nice seal who is teaching you how to sing. Anaon closed her eyes and imagined her voice sounding fair and not screechish, she copied the seal’s words, trying to get the tone to sound the exact same, “Doe ray mee faa soo laa tee doe!” Anaon opened her green eyes in excitement, it did not sound as nearly as bad as when she sang the song about the little birds; she looked expectantly at Alma, “That was a lot better right?”
