 Onyx had been avoiding his cave all morning, he had to get out because back home something was waiting for him and the more he ignored it the better he felt, he knew he couldn't run from it every moment of every day and burying it won't work either and what if it was important? He had to tend to it sooner or later but he decided that later was better then sooner so he would just ignore it for as long as possible and just settled down by the lake and thought about taking a nap, nice fall day and all, it would be pleasant to have a nap here.

 Makoto was sitting under a tree with her books stacked beside her and one lying open under her paws. It was an old book she had found in an abandoned shack, from what she could tell of the old dried pages it was about the geography of the area, someone had surveyed the area and journaled it here. There were symbols and charts she had yet to decipher but she was loving the challenge. She had been taking note of bits here and there trying to fit them together flipping ahead or behind trying to find further clues. A slight breeze picked up unexpectedly and the pages began turning themselves faster and faster before a sheet inserted between some pages took flight. Oh NO! She gasped and got up closing the cover of the book in the same motion counting on the weight of the leather cover to keep everything in place. She raced after it hoping to catch it before it landed in the water of the lake. She could lose everything on it if that happened. " No no no no no don't do it! Please wait!" she tried to catch it time and again but at each attempt the sheet simply rolled on the breeze and out of her grasp. It was getting dangerously close now and if she couldn't catch it soon she feared she'd lose any hope of discovering the journals secrets.

Onyx looked up to see what the commotion was all about and noticed some woman running after some bit of paper, getting up he jumped and caught it in his mouth before it flew over head and dropped into the water, looking at her he walked over and handed it to her "this is yours?" He asked as best he could between clenched teeth so it wouldn't blow away again.

Makoto gasped afraid she was too late when someone seemingly came out of no where to grasp it. "Thank you! Yes!" She huffed out of breath, she wasn't use to much exercise and a stitch was forming in her side. She stood for a moment trying to catch her breath before taking the sheet. She carefully opened it finding instead of clues to the book a small bouquet of pressed wild flowers. She frowned disappointed, certainly not what she had hoped for, perhaps the pages it came from held clues.. not that she would know which pages those were. She looked to the stranger having almost forgotten he was there in her excitement and then disappointment, she probably should explain it to him. "I found an old book in an abandoned building and was trying to figure bits of it out when this went flying... I was hoping this would hold some clues." She looked at the stranger to see if it held any interests or information to him, she kinda doubted it would, no one else ever seemed to share her interests but well a girl could hope couldn't she?

"Youre welcome" he said as he looked at the book and then at her, she held more intrest to him then the book but that was probably because he didn't know how to read, never had been able to so books were just not his thing "I see" he said before realising he should maybe introduce himself "I guess I should introduce myself, I am Onyx Shiro, Onyx for short, who may you be?" He asked curiously.

Makoto blushed she'd forgot to introduce herself again she was always doing that, skipping right to the conversation without the introduction. She had read plenty of books about proper etiquette but she always had trouble utilizing the information. She was trying to recall the information now, she just froze in these kinds of situations, she smiled to buy her time, "It's a pleasure to meet to Onyx, I really do owe you one, I'm Makoto." She hoped she got that right interacting with others was never her strong suit and she always felt a bit uneasy doing so, course assuming she had gotten it right what is she suppose to do now? She looked back to the flowers what was she to do with flowers? She folded up the sheet again slipping it into her waistband for later, maybe there were clues she hadn't noticed she would have to check into that. She would have done so right away but well... she was pretty sure you're not suppose to do that when just meeting someone so she was restraining herself... but she didn't know what else to do or say so now she just stood there awkwardly looking at Onyx not sure what to do.

"It is a pleasure to meet you" he said smiling at her "so these books, any others come from the old building?" He asked curiously, explaining about one book was fine but still, surely, there were others? He always loved old buildings and book and always having wanted to read them and all but he just really lacked the ability to do such a thing, after having been abandoned by his parents as a pup he never was able to learn how to read as he never had the means to since one usually doesn't carry books around with them when they are tossed out of home.

She smiled "Oh yes" he was interested in her books and that made it easier to talk because she could talk about something she knew. "Let me show you" she walked a few steps towards the tree she had been reading under before looking over her shoulder inviting him to follow. "I collect books from where ever I can get them so any time I find an abandoned place I search it diligently, this particular place had several books. I haven't had a chance to work through them all yet. Do you read often?" She waited for him to follow before continuing on.

Onyx followed the other and as much as he hated to do so he lied to her "I don't have time, I am too busy tending to my sick sister" he said which was partly true, he did have a sick sister who, one day, came looking for the long lost brother their parents tried to hide from her but in doing so she ended up weakening her already weakened heart so since she arrived he has been making sure she kept taking the medication the doctor gave her, she was an adult and could handle it herself but as the big brother he just wanted to make sure, now that he had found her and they had both gotten close he didn't want to lose her. So yes, he lied but it was to also hide the fact that he couldn't read at all and he didn't want to swallow his pride in front of his sister and show that her brother was a complete idiot when it came to the matter so even she didn't know he couldn't read, he would tell her one day but till then he would just keep it secret "and you are now wishing I had come along with you, I have always wanted to explore old buildings and the like but due to family commitment I haven't been able to, maybe next time I should see if I can go...that is if you wouldn't mind the company" he said, knowing it was rude to just invite himself along but at least he tried to remedy that by getting her permission....maybe.

She always ended up sticking her foot in her mouth, she had to ask and force him to bring up a depressing subject but upon his offering to join her she became elated "Oh that would be lovely" her smile grew, she had never had anyone interested in joining her on her searches except for permakits and they tended to get themselves in trouble rather than being helpful and there had been times when she could have used a second set of paws... in fact she knew just where she would take him an old building that had parts collapsed and in need of moving to access other blocked off areas. She wonders about his sister though, he might need help with her in order to get away and she didn't exactly feel comfortable with that, she had enough trouble holding a conversation with a healthy person let alone an ill one... and shouldn't she have asked about the sister rather than talking about herself? She really did suck at this but she wouldn't even know where to begin so she left it at that.
Once she reached the tree she opened the book she had been working on and placed the sheet with the pressed flowers inside. "These are all the books I found today." She smiled sort of proud, she had only once before found someone who enjoyed books almost as much as she did and it was wonderful to find someone else who shared her love. Perhaps they could trade books the other didn't have so they could read even more books! Oh she liked that idea a lot

Onyx smiled at the other, pleased he was able to go with her, this would be fun "thank you for letting me come with you" he said politely as he looked over the books she found that day "these were all in one building?" He asked curiously, giving the age of them he was a little shocked they hadn't been ruined more so, age, weather conditions and depending on the building and how old it was, debris could of helped ruin them also so considering the look of them, they were old but actually still in decent condition.

Makoto smiled in welcome just pleased to have company that shared her interests and wasn't completely awkward to be around maybe she was just getting better at this whole socializing thing, she nodded "Yep, as far as I can tell the past owner was some sort of geographical surveyor, this one here" she patted the book in front of her with her paw "seems to be his journal, the others..." she frowned a little "well I don't know yet, one's in french and another seems to be in some kind of short hand I haven't had a chance to decipher yet." She shrugged apologetically she had only just found them so she hadn't really had a chance to work on them yet. "You're welcome to take a look if you'd like." She smiled, maybe he'd have some luck, two heads were better than one right?

French...was it strange that he knew French but couldn't read at all? He was taught when he found the first kitsu who took pity on him, his name was Andre, he was French and didn't speak a word of English so if he wanted to communicate with him he listened to him and picked up the dialect easily enough but that was through hearing not actually reading so whilst he knew French reading it was a tad more difficult. "I guess I could take a look at the French one" he said as he listened to her, he had to play along, he couldn't not just say he wouldn't help and if she didn't know French it would be harder on her still so the least he could do was look over the book even if he couldn't read it "the surveyor have a name?" He asked curiously.

She smiled and pulled out the french book handing it to him before answering his question "Uhhh.." she opened the journal again to find his name "Jacques I think." She flipped a few more pages "yep! Here it is Jacques Lefevre." She looked at him not sure what to say or do now maybe he knew the guy? She sat for a few moments trying to think of what should come next. "So..." she didn't know what was proper and what was considered rude "How did you learn french?" she hoped it came across as friendly and not judgmental, she was trying to make conversation but it was her one crux, she just couldn't figure out all the dynamics

"Thanks and the name does ring a bell but I am not exactly sure why" he said, maybe Andre mentioned it once or twice? He couldn't remember but the name did sound familure oh well, he would figure it out later as he got the book and opened it and then looked at her "when I was abandoned as a kid I ended up coming across a Kitsu who only spoke French and no English at all, he took me in and cared for me but unless I wanted to communicate with him I had to learn French so I picked it up easily enough through listening to him" he said as he flipped through the book, stopping every now and again, pretending to see if anything was interesting on the page.
