The Mystery of the Terrifying Tracks

Running Dates: October 23-October 27
(The times that clues will be posted will vary. Keep an eye on the event for when Murphy posts the next day's likely "start" time!)

Once again, the...

Rules
1. You are welcome to enter one character per weyr. This means you can participate in all three mysteries if you'd like, but with only one character in each. (I.E. Don't have your character's best friend show up half-way through the mystery just to hang out. Staff members may insert one of their characters for plot purposes, but that's for the good of the event and they will not be counted as participating members. Just plot devices.)
2. Play nicely and keep the drama to a minimum! If you have an issue with someone, take it to PMs.
3. You are welcome to refuse any prize you win if you think something you like more might come up in another game. HOWEVER, if you do refuse, the staff cannot promise you will win another prize. (It's up to chance, after all!) If you refuse a prize, the prize will go on to the next eligible person. We will not fight with you over your choice or be responsible for replacing a prize you have refused if you change your mind later on.
4. You may only win ONE prize from this event. If you win one of the grand mystery prizes, you may not win one of the firelizards or either of the other mystery prizes. The mystery prize of the other events will go to other participants. Winning a prize in the events does not exclude you from winning any prizes from the games.
5. Please be aware that these mysteries are occurring at the weyrs. This means that if you have a character living at the Harper Hall, they will not be able to participate unless you have a good reason for them to be hanging out at the weyr during the mystery.

Now for the expanded explanation of how this event is going to work.

This will be an in-character roleplaying event taking place shortly after the recent murder of Benden's Weyrwoman, Kestril. Periodically, within the set event times of that day, the staff member running the event will prompt the players to roll a d100 in an attempt to match or get as close to the staff member's roll as possible. This roll indicates which character gets to discover the next clue of the mystery! The person who is the closest to the staffer's number wins the point and their character will discover the clue in the staff member's next post. (PLEASE NOTE: After the rolls are complete, the staffer will make another post, this one with the clue and the character who discovered it. In the event of a tie between two characters, both characters will discover the clue and receive a point. Do not see that you are the closest and have your character go "LOOK! A CLUE!" when you aren't event sure what it is yet. Hahaha.) There will be about 2-3 clues posted a day. Staff members will try to wait to give as many people a chance to roll as possible, but we do have to keep the event going and get those 2-3 clues in, so if you are absent for the day, you will miss the roll. Don't worry, though. There are always other days if you miss a clue or two!

The majority of the event, of course, will be roleplay between the participating characters as they work through the clues and try to solve the mystery. This is a chance for your characters to have some fun and get some interaction with their fellows, after all! Clues will be posted at the discretion of the staffer. This means that after you all have had a chance to get in an intro post or a response to the latest clue and your characters get the chance to chat somewhat, another clue may be posted. (Think Hatchings.)

At the end of the clues (and the event), your characters will finally solve the mystery and put their suspicions to rest. The final tallying of points will occur and the winner of the grand prize will be announced. Those players who participated actively in the event (and did not win the grand prize) will be put in a raffle to win two Halloween-themed firelizards colored by the very talented staff member running your event. So, even if it looks like you're not doing well in the points realm, don't give up hope! There's still a chance for you to win something too!

Being a southern weyr Malvren was warmer than most places this time of the turn, but it was still an unusually cool night. A strange sort of silence had settled over the weyr. Though Malvren had never been particularly close to Benden, the weyrwoman Kestril’s death, and the following trading ban with Malvren had put the weyrfolk somewhat on edge. Political tensions aside, there was another reason for concern. A mousey, pale looking candidate had been down to the shore during the evening, and he now ran to the dining hall, looking harried. There weren’t many still eating in the light of the dying hearth, but those that were still there saw the poor lad rush in, flutter his hands nervously for a moment, and speak in a high, wheedling voice once eyes turned toward him. “I-I’ve just come back from the beach. There’s tracks in the sand down there – too big to be normal. I don’t know wh-what made them, but it can’t be good.”

Zeren had been on his way to go find a certain Blue Wher and his handler when a lad, another candidate, ran past him, almost bowling him over. He turned to listen to what caused him to run and was curious. Tracks on the beach? larger than normal. That could mean dragons..... or possibly a feral Wher.. no, he focussed on the posibility of dragons. Lately Zeren had been coming out of himself more, he wanted to prove himself, he'd failed so far at hatchings and he wondered if it was because he was just so shy and nervous, so he decided to be brave and head over to the beach, no doubt followed by others which made him that little bit braver.

Wykla was enjoying a late meal. Or at least she had been until a fluttery candidate came in and started rambling on about tracks on the sand. It had taken her far too long today, to feed Kameth then bathe him followed by doing the same for her three firelizards. The possibility of having a cold dinner hadn't put her in a good mood. Luckily though, she'd stuffed all three flits with as much as they could ever hold then sent them to sleep it off. So she got her luke warm dinner in peace. Wykla scowled at the candidate.

"It's probably just dragon tracks. There are some really large dragons. Besides they're tracks. Impressions in the sand, how exactly can they be dangerous?" She turned back to her food to get a couple more bites in.
Mine, it is not the tracks that are dangerous, but maybe the one that made them. Then he shouldn't be babbling on about tracks being dangerous should he?

Adi often lingered late in the dining hall, even after she'd finished eating - it was one of the best places to socialize! But tonight, it seemed, it would be a little more than that. She paid the Candidate attention immediately, noting his frightened pallor and nervous voice. It could be a prank, she supposed, but he looked and sounded truly concerned...of course, it could also be a prank on him. Candidates weren't always the kindest to each other.

The young bluerider rose, shooting Wykla a brief, disapproving look for her dismissive response. "Hey, it's alright," she tried to soothe, "Slow down a minute. What did they look like besides big?"

((Everyone, go ahead and roll a d100 with your next post. I'll post the next bit, ahhh, probably some time later tonight. Also, I'm tossing my character in. He has no opportunity for winning clues - I just feel like playing him and letting him help moving things along.

As a note, if anyone arrives after this has gotten fully in swing, feel free to assume your character has been tagging along. For now though, on to the beach!))

“I didn’t say dangerous,” the young candidate said waspishly, nervousness giving him a biting tone despite speaking to a rider that ranked him. “I said not good. I only saw one set of tracks, and they didn’t look big enough to belong to a fully grown dragon. If it’s a little one, it probably shouldn’t be going so far without its rider, and if it’s not a dragon…” He crossed his arms over his chest, too unsure to make a guess or answer Adi with any more detail. “I ought to go,” the candidate added and, with a perturbed glance over those lingering in the hall, went scuttling out of the room.

“What a coward,” a tall lad noted from an adjacent table. Also a candidate, the much taller lad was far fitter than the wan creature that had just scurried away. Large and hale (and probably only a few turns from aging out), the lad tossed his long black braid over his shoulder, and, with a mischievous gleam in his eye, rose from the table. “I’m curious,” he noted aloud, and, with a sly wink for Wykla, stepped over the bench and strode for the exit. He had the feeling they were going to find some silly holder trying to dig for firelizard clutches in the midst of the night, but the hunt could be fun if anyone companionable or entertaining came along.

Zeren sighed, maybe coming out was a mistake... he almost turned back but then a green blur shot by his head, followed by a blue one, Viska and Grym, two of his flits, the others he guessed were off doing their own thing or sleeping. These two were the ones that stayed the longest around him, strange that Viska seemed to like to antagonise Grym but wherever she was, Grym was usually close behind, grumbling his disapproval at the green. Zeren chuckled and gestured for both to come and take a perch on his shoulders "you two can help me keep a look out, we're on an adventure" his tone reserved mainly for Viksa, she liked to get into things and sent images of tunnelsnakes at him "no not tunnelsnakes, something strange at the beach" he said to her, Grym churring a warning, it was getting dark, and while the blue had long forgotten WHY he was worried about the dark, he still chittered about 'bigscarydarkhurtstayinside' whenever Zeren too a night walk, funnily enough the Blue still often came with him.

Adi made a slight sound of protest when the Candidate ran off, but didn't try to stop. She only shook her head, then frowned at the other boy who stepped forward. "I don't think he's a coward at all. He did just stand up in front of the whole dining hall, that probably took a lot."

"Anyway," she switched, smiling, and all but skipped to the exit, "We should go see them!"

You feel like going to the beach, Maz?

I don't know, Mine...I am very comfortable. I will think about it. In reality, the dragon was already moving, albeit slowly. This could be fun! And on the off chance that something really was dangerous, he wanted to be near his rider.

Wykla ignored the look from Adi. It was her turn to eat shard it. She had been on her feet all afternoon, and now that she was sitting they were throbbing. The tone from the candidate did make her shoot a sharp glance at him. It further irritated her when he ran out again. If it wasn't dangerous then why by the shell did he bother them with it?!

She arched her brow as a second candidate spoke up. That some believed him baffled her. Maybe the first boy had made the tracks to get attention. Bah, whatever. Wykla eyed her cold food wistfully. She could take it to be re-heated at the fires, but that would require her to stand.

Mine? Are you not going to see what it was? The blue prodded. She had been so busy with them, she hadn't had time for herself. It might not be flying, but following the tracks could be fun. The sand is soft Mine.

Nope, she responded instantly. Wykla had no inclination to go out and tramp over the uneven sand. She would still be on her sore feet, soft sand or no. Eating the rest of her mean, she watched as the select few decided to head out. It wasn't until Kameth's quiet prodding became more intense did she push her empty plate away. "Alright! I'm going." At least that second candidate would be there.

Crystal honestly couldn't be bothered to care about the nervous Candidate's report. What was so worrisome about tracks on the beach? If they didn't belong to a dragon then they were probably made by a Wher, and if not then oh well. It was certainly nothing worth getting excited over.

Likely not, but a nice stroll down the beach never hurt anyone, her dragon suggested. The weather is quite lovely out right now... Why don't you join me? You could always just pass by these 'tracks' on the way to the ocean to come see me.

... You're curious, aren't you.

Only a little bit. I really do wish to swim though.

The silverrider let out a faint sigh. Nothing's stopping your swim, but fine, I will go see these strange 'tracks' that have been found. If nothing else it could be amusing to watch others puzzle over them.

Kaz ignored the comment about the smaller candidate’s supposed courage. He was somewhat amused once he reached the beach and, idling by the shore, watched so many people arrive. Have waved collectively at the gathering group and grinned widely. “Anyone want to take bets on what it is – that is if we even find any tracks?” As he spoke, a small blue firelizard popped into the air over his head and, chittering squeakily, settled on his shoulder. "I'm betting there's a couple kids trying to find some privacy in the moonlight," he laughed, ignoring the creature's arrival.

Across the dim, moon-lit beach, Zeren could make out an odd pattern in the sand. Though they were mostly washed away by the incoming surf, and it wouldn’t be long until they were swept away entirely, the large tracks wound their way across the beach. Whatever had made them, perhaps a large animal, seemed to be heading in the vague direction of the Weyr.

Shedrawn watched the curve of the tracks and wondered out loud. "Well if the tracks are here then wouldn't the creature be closeby? Although the tracks do look a little old. Then again, I'm not a tracker. Do we have any former beastholders here? What do you guys think?" Shedrawn felt a little nervous about the unknown creature so close to the weyr. What if it got into the feeding pens. He didn't think the dragons would appreciate that much. Isdrayon chirped from his left shoulder and Anyang trilled from his right. Illyrion squawked while she clung to his chest. He was covered in firelizards. Anyang and Isdrayon seemed interested but Illy was sulky cause they were not in bed and it was chilly and there was something out there that could most definitely eat her. He stroked his little girl and she simmered a bit.

Zeren was alerted to others joining the search by Grym, who was more alert than usual, Viska chittered excitedly and showed him faded images of footprints just off to the side of where he'd been looking. "Here!" he called to the others "Unless whatever it is, is walking backwards, it appears it's heading to the weyr, where we all just came from" he said, sounding braver than he felt, the creature could have ran right by them and they'd not noticed, no wonder that candidate had been so shaken. "I can't tell whether they're wher prints or something else though, the water has washed the shape away properly but it was heavy... because the tracks are still there" he said after bending to examine the edges, he couldn't tell how long they'd been there. They could have been made hours before the tide got high enough to wash them away ... or they could have been made minutes ago, the creature walking along the waterline. Viska and Grym chittered and huddled closer into him, especially Grym, he didn't know why the unknown darkness frightened him like this but Zeren knew it had been some feline or wild wher that had almost cost the blue his life that evening he'd been with Kazvar and Kazvask and had heard the pained cries, he unconsciously rubbed the thin scar on his arm that he'd gotten that night too.

[[Everyone please roll another d100. This one will be open until 4ish central time, about eight hours from now. Don’t worry if you’ve missed this or previous clues. There’s going to be plenty more, so jump on in!]]
----------------------------------

Kazairl shrugged in unknowing indifference to Shedrawn’s question. He was more amused by the number of people arriving on the beach than interested in the tracks themselves, but when Zeren called out he walked quickly over. Making sure not to tread on the tracks himself, he tapped his chin thoughtfully and nodded. “Hard to say. Whatever it is, it has to be big. If anyone’s going to follow them to see where whatever made them wound up, we should all probably go – for safety’s sake.” He sounded solemn about the suggestion, but he was more attentive to the mischief of the opportunity rather than safety now.
