Dak sniffed the damp streets, lightheaded from hunger. Feeding himself was hard, but after a lifetime of fending on his own, he was used to it. It was better now that he'd found his human. She didn't have money to feed him every day, she couldn't even feed herself sometimes, but the occasional shared piece of bread or fish was enough to ease the living some. It at least made him feel like he wasn't in this alone.

He scrambled up some soggy boxes and nosed the lid off a trash can, peering inside hopefully. He did this often, usually choosing cans from restaurants or large families. The surface seemed to yield no immediate results, but by digging a little, he managed to find a half eaten wedge of cheese. Slightly molded, and little sour, but better than an empty belly. He made quick work of it and dug further, just his back end sticking out of the can.

Reisx had found herself back in town again, hitting the alleyways seeing what she came up with. Hunting in the wild was easy, sometimes, but larger game would be difficult, if she ever came across any that is. She mostly found fish in the streams, or small rodent like creatures that tried to hide in the underbrush. LIttle did the creatures know, though, that she was waiting for them to enter the somewhat cozy looking underbrush where she laid in wait.

But today was a scavenge day. She was lucky enough on a late night to have picked up a few strands of what she suspected to be jerky, from the ground near a building that smelled of the foul drink her old master used to binge on.

But no, today was a more relaxed pace as she wandered, her nose keen to look in the best places.

Cheeeeeeeese...

Obviously the half eaten wedge head scarfed down hadn't been the last of the cheesetopia. This trash can had plenty of left overs, each just as sour as the first, but still just as welcome into the cull's stomach. It seemed, however, that the best piece had been saved for last. It hardly had any mold on it! But, it was too far away for him to grab.

He stretched his neck as far as it would go, and when that didn't work, he tried stretching his paw out, but no dice. Huffing, he tried wiggling a little bit further into the can, but before he could react the can flipped and he went tumbling out onto the pavement. He yelp and rolled, smacking right into...

A Mokai?

"Oh no..."

Reisx watched for a moment, as what seemed to be the butt-end of a cull poked out from one of the trashcans Reisx generally tried to avoid (she didn't care for the smell of sour cheese). When the can flipped, so did he, fumbling down and into her, at the movement, she merely quirked a brow and raised a leg. He seemed young though, as she was, his ribs visible. It saddened her. It seemed like he wasn't sure which trash bins might be the best.

Or, perhaps, he liked cheese a little too much.

He didn't seem to have good luck.

She looked to the ground, to her right, and pawed at a piece of cheese that was barely...too smelly, and pushed it to him, "Looking for this?" and she let her paw let loose of the cheese.

His ears flattened, an all too familiar pose for them, and he cautiously stretched his head out to the freed cheese. Maybe it was because he was still laying on his back, and thus reaching for the cheese upside down, but it looked kind of silly. With a flash of movement, he snapped up the cheese, swallowed it near-whole, and whirled his way away from the female. Hah!

Further away now, he could see that she didn't wear a collar. Was she feral? She looked like she hadn't really seen much human care lately. Then again, so did he, and he had a human. Either way, she was yet another female larger than him, and looked as if she knew how to hold her own in a fight. Why did he always run into females that could kick him out of existence?

"I...uh..." Urgh. What to say? "There might be more cheese in the can... you can have it?"

She watched him move, he was too anxious, scared, and tried to get away all too quickly. She sighed when he did, she hadn't done any posturing towards him, she tried to keep herself relaxed, and at ease. Was he really that afraid of her, or just, twitchy, in general?

Reisx stood and took a few steps towards him, slowly, and turned her head some, looking him over.

Thin, too thin, even for a cull.

"She shrugged her shoulders at him, "Cheese isn't really a primary source of protein or anything, just a treat when it isn't too sour. Doesn't matter for you though, huh? When was the last time you had something decent?"

What was wrong with cheese? He frowned. Cheese was delicious. A great find when you had to scrounge to survive! Maybe she was a pet after all. Or a pampered fighter. Something that ate better than he did, at the least.

"Define decent..." he finally said. Cheese? Decent in comparison. But it was a lot like an admission. He didn't eat decent by most standards. What cull did? It was a hard knock life, and finding club sandwiches in the trash can didn't happen in the real world. Though it did in his dreams.

Ah, dreams.

"Decent, like meat. My master never gave me some while I was here, he used to bait me with it," Reisx said simply. She watched the cull, looked a him, small, but quick. Couldn't his master feed him too? Maybe not, humans, she found out, sometimes had hard lives just as the Mokai did.

"Like I said, he never gave me any, he'd throw away more than what I would be happy getting. Do you want me to show you, where you could go, to find something better? It has off days too, of course," Reisx knew she was giving this Mokai information about where she liked to scavenge. But the way she saw it, perhaps sometime soon enough she wouldn't have to anymore once she figured out patterns of the prey beyond the walls in the wild.

She could just catch some more fish later, eat some of the fruit, fruit was always good. That was Cellen's favorite, she smiled to herself, remembering when she brought him some.

Dak shook his head. The only meat he came in contact with was the fish meat that they sold, and he wasn't allowed to eat that. He got bits of rotten meat in trash cans occasionally, but it wasn't enough to really consider a decent meal. "No meat. Just what I can find around here..." he admitted.

His tail, while still between his legs, wagged a little. He wasn't going to give up on caution, but this female didn't seem so bad. "You're feral? I used to be..." it seemed like she'd escaped exactly what he'd sought out. Of course, a strong, large mokai like her probably wouldn't have trouble as a feral. They were treated respect.

He scooted a little closer to her at her offer, and after a moment of consideration he nodded. "Yeah, that would help a lot."

Reisx quirked a brow, "Without a proper portion of meat now and again, you won't have a healthy weight," she looked at him, raised a paw and mock-poked him, without touching him of course in case he was skittish, "it will help keep some muscle, and fat over your ribs, make you feel a little better."

At his statement, she looked at him, silver-eyed, confused.

Had he gotten caught, or come here willingly looking to get caught?

"Why did you come here, for this?" she was curious, but knew, perhaps, he might not say a word about it.

"Follow me then," she said as she began walking in one direction, staying to the shadows, the alleys where she knew the stench was a bit much from the buildings where men grouped together and drank foul-stenched liquids. But it was hte only way.

HUmans, men in particular, when they drank the foul-stenched liquid, ate, but seldom finished what they ate. Humans, at least her old master, had been a heavy meat-eater and often threw out much more than he could handle.

That is where they would start.

She heard noises, voices at a distance, but kept moving. She knew this male had a collar, could be hear, perhaps not a true fighter or pearl diver, but he belonged. She on the other hand, had to be careful, and more on edge.

She came to one alleyway that was very dark, a single door against a concrete and red brick building. A light peered from underneath the door. She went to the trash bins near the door, but stayed quiet, paws light on the ground.

Soon she started digging at the top, and she felt that some of the paper-wrapped breads that held meat and other vegetables were on top. The men were already well into their night of drink.

"Take some, eat," she said, pulling the small parcels from the can, dropping them to the ground, "unwrap them. Eat some, and we'll take some for you for later, but be quiet, stay low," she whispered."

He frowned at her question. "You have no idea what it's like to be a cull in a large pack," he snorted. "Believe it or not, this," he motioned to the can with the cheese, "is more than I got when I was feral. My human makes sure I'm okay." That was more than he ever got from his pack mates. They didn't care about him in the least.

Dak followed her quietly. The plus side to being thin was being lighter than most Mokai. His paws were barely audible as they hit the pavement. The voices made his fur stand on end, but he stayed close by her. Perhaps it was irrational to be fearful, but old habits died hard. The alleyway gave him some comfort.

He unwrapped the packages as he was told, and sniffed the contents. This food was actually fresh! "How did you know about this?" The question was quick, just barely finished before he was digging his face into the food. It was heavenly. The meat was the best part, filling and moist. It tasted like mokai heaven. He only finished half of the meal before he was too full to continue.

True, she did not know the feeling, but she knew what it was like if you came to the settlement and had run ins with humans that were less than friendly. At least his human cared, which was good. As she rummaged she watched him eat, he seemed satisfied, and happy, and she smiled. It felt good to help him, and it made her grumbling stomach silence itself as she felt satisfied watching him become full.

"My old master, used to chain me and bait me here," she said, motioning to a pipe that came from the side of the building. There were scratches in the surface from where she had been bound. "He didn't use typical training methods."

She heard a clunk, and boots on the ground, and her ears stood on end.

"We have to go, grab that, save it for later, I'll take another you can bury," she said grabbing another parcel, then dropping to the ground, she motioned with his head, waited for him, then took off running to a neutral spot they could catch their breath.

Dak's ears immediately fell in shock. "Did you... hurt mokai like me?" He'd heard of the fighters that were baited with weak culls, the ones who no one wanted to keep. Dak had chosen his human because he felt she wouldn't be like that, but he knew there were those who would. It made him sad and angry, and all the more fearful of the humans with short tempers.

At the sound of foot falls, he was immediately alert. Following her directions, he folded the paper back around to food as best he could and grabbed it gingerly. Like a flash of red fur, he was off, racing behind her and away from the sound. Maybe it was her story, and thinking too much, but suddenly he didn't want to see any humans tonight.

As they came to a safe spot, close to where her escape point was in the fence, she stopped in an alleyway that was silent. The guards would have passed this area by now, so it would be safe for a few moments. As she sat, watched him, she gave a faint smile and shook her head, "No, I was a fighter, but my master used me as bait for other fighters, I never hurt someone like you, or would ever want to. The life I had here I did not choose."

She pushed the parcel she had brought towards him with her paw, "If you bury it somewhere you know, you can have more later, but that place, it is good to go when the lamp lights start dimming. Usually, the humans are loud by then, but cannot walk straight, so you'll be safe to scavenge there," she smiled. "I hope it will help you."

She peered at him, stood and shook her fur, "I hope you understand, not all fighters are the same, and understand that some do not choose the life they live, but, you can change it for the better, if giving yourself the chance."

She lowered her head some, blinked, silver eyes intent, "I am Reisx."

When he stopped, he was panting, but he seemed composed enough. It took a lot of energy he didn't really have to run away like that. His body managed somehow, though. He sniffed around his packages to make sure they were okay, and only looked up when she said she wouldn't hurt someone like him.

This was the second mokai to have sentiments like this... But she was feral. If she didn't want to, then why had his old pack done it so easily?

He nodded slowly. "I'm beginning to understand that," he agreed. "I'm Dak. Thank you for helping me out, Reisx. This will make things a lot easier for me."
