A large, flat piece of ground, strange compared the rest of the Seireitei around it. For the training ground is nothing but a large square of barren earth exposed in the middle of the Ninth Division. Shan built it upon becoming captain, and few understood the real reason for it unless they knew his ability. Then it made perfect sense. This is where the Division is trained, and where Shan is often found in the morning doing the forms for his fighting style.

Shan stepped into the middle of the field, knowing full well that Torik was behind him. Once there, he stopped and turned to face his lieutenant, placing a hand on his zanpaku-to. He looked at the man for a second, and then nodded. "I believe it is only the right thing to let you go first, seeing as it is your test we are initiating here. So begin whenever you feel necessary. I will attempt to give you pointers as the spar continues. Oh, and try to give it your all. You've come this far and despite my greatest attempts I cannot help but expect a certain level of competence from you, Torik, after having come this far. Let us see just how far you have come. After all, I haven't seen you in action since you applied to be my fifth seat. It shall be interesting, I am sure."

Torik Ishikawa Lieutenant of Squad 9
Torik followed, but made sure to stay several feet behind his Captain to keep some distance between them before the fight. He listened very attentively to Shan's words, he just gave him a soft smile and nodded. Once he was finish, Torik quickly drew his zanpaktou and held it in his right hand. "Thank you Captain Hokori, I will try my best not to disappoint." He extended the arm that he held his sword with and pointed two fingers at his Captain, "Hadou Four: Byakuri!" He said as he started the battle, a beam of pale lightning shot out of his finger and flew toward Shan with incredible speed. Of course he knew this was easily avoidable, especially for a Captain, so he used his Shunpo to appear a bit closer to Shan but to his right and still several feet away. Torik's left palm was now pointed at Shan ready for another attack. "Hadou Thirty-Three: Sokatsui!" He shouted as a powerful blue wave of spirit energy was shot out of the palm of his hand and toward Shan's right side. This told Torik that with an attack coming from the right and a frontal assault coming at Shan as well there seemed to be only two courses of action for him to take, to the left and up. Of course, for a Captain there could be many other options. But for now Torik was focused on those two, but also kept his mind open to different possibilities. The young Lieutenant looked closely at his Captain's movement and prepared to Shunpo in the direction Shan did for another attack.

The Captain of the Ninth Division bent his body to the side, rolling his shoulder as the lightning passed by. It wasn't the most impressive attack, but it gave Shan pause. In a heated battle it would force an opponent to move, and set up for a beautiful counter-attack. This was good. He stood back straight as Torik began to run at him, and he slowly drew his sword. The metallic hiss of it being unsheathed almost, if you listened close enough, sounded like the faint whispers of an earthquake.
When he fired yet another kido, his lieutenant would find that neither option was taken. As the blast condensed, it collided against a rather solid force. The flames of the kido blasted against a solid, circular shield, which disappeared quickly as Shan charged through it. The defense and counter happened almost at the same time, making it almost look like Shan just bulldozed through the flames itself. As he charged forth, the smoke still obscuring him a little, his sword was held high above his head in both hands, and he brought it crashing down at Torik's head. It wasn't a beautiful attack, and it most certainly wasn't flamboyant. It just, quite simply, got the job done.

Torik Ishikawa Lieutenant of Squad 9
It was a moment, but Torik saw the shield. Where had it come from, had he release his zanpaktou? Torik had never seen Shan's zanpaktou in action before, only rumors of it power over earth. He looked as his Captain had his zanpaktou over his head and brought in down attempting to smash Toriks head in. Torik dodged the attack by moving his body to the left, but quickly used Shunpo to appear above his Captain in a instant. That was close, if that would have connected I would have been finished. He thought to himself as he didn't hesitate to take the opening presented to him, with Shan's zanpaktou down from the attempt to smash Torik's head the around above Shan was now unprotected. He rose his zanpaktou and brought it down, slashing toward Captain Hokori's left shoulder. Though he was only gripping his zanpaktou with one hand, it wasn't as powerful of an attack as it would have been if he had been using two. This was an obvious opening, one that he knew the Captain would probably be easily able to counter. So Torik tried to keep thinking ahead as he slashed down at his Captain's shoulder.

When Torik disappeared, Shan let the downward strike continue but took a long, stretching step forward. Torik's blade whipped down at the air directly behind Shan's shoulder as he moved. A captain rarely found use for shun-po and its like after so many years of practice, but if he did it was for a very good reason. He learned various techniques that circumvented the need for shun-po simply based on strategy and good form. But Torik was very close to Shan at the moment, and that did speak highly of his capabilities as it stood already. But hitting him was an entirely different story.
When he stepped forward, he stopped the downward swing, and angled his blade to the side. When Torik's blade finished its swing, he hopped backwards at his lieutenant and spun. Shan's blunt blade soared at Torik's side, and the impact would mean a very beautiful shaped bruise and even a cracked rib or two. That was the strange beauty of Shan's blade. It rarely if every drew blood, but it's one true specialty was incapacitation. People can survive wounds of the greatest caliber, but even the greatest of warriors cannot hope to fight for very long with broken bodies.
"Good tactics, Torik. Definitely at a lieutenant's level. Now only to bring you to a half step beyond that, even."

Torik Ishikawa Lieutenant of Squad 9
With his blade moved and angled to the side Torik could not block the attack, this was truly unexpected. But he quickly found the best way to get out of the attack with the least damage possible. When he saw the sword coming at his side Torik's reaction was to jump backward, but Shan was too close and Torik could not completely dodge the attack. His moving back only neutralize some of the damage, as the blade of Shan's zanpaktou hit Torik's rib he flew back a little further then he expected with his jump. The impact left a good sized bruise and even slightly fractured one of Torik's left ribs. He slightly grunted from the pain but kept his stance and composure, listening to his Captain's compliments. "Thanks for the compliment Captain, but I'm just getting started." Torik grinned with excitement and he rose his zanpaktou and pointed it toward Shan.
"I think it's time for my zanpaktou's Shikai Captain Hokori." He said with a confident smile, he kept his arm extended and turned his zanpaktou so the blade would be pointing to Torik's left and the sword parallel to the ground. "Winds Roar, Kaze Senshu!" Torik shouted, releasing his zanpaktou's power. The blade of his sword slightly curved as a wind aura formed around the blade. Normally he wouldn't be using his zanpaktou's Shikai so soon in a battle, but with his rib slightly fractured from one hit of his Captain's zanpaktou he found it an appropriate situation to use it sooner.
"I hope you like this Shikai Captain, used correctly I think it will work well with your earth zanpaktou. Though I wont know for sure until I see its true power for myself." Torik tightened his grip on his zanpaktou as he focused his reitsu into it. He slashed his sword toward Captain Hokori, releasing a powerful blast of wind from the blade shooting toward him at a high speed tearing to shreds almost anything in its path. Normally this attack would easily destroy any rock or earth in its path, but for Shan it may be different. Actually, it would most likely be different.

Shan stood still, straightening his stance a little as Torik spoke. "The true challenge to any division is discovering how your abilities work together. Many fight as separate entities, and this never works." When the blast came towards him, he ran forward towards the oncoming wave of condensed air. And then when the timing was right he jumped off to the side, landed, and continued running. The damage potential from such an attack was impressive, to say the least, so it was a good thing that Shan was a captain, no? He approached his lieutenant, both hands still on his sword, and went in for a vertical swing. As he completed the swing, his hands now pointed at Torik, he said but a few words. "Hadou Thirty-Three: Sokatsui!"

Torik Ishikawa Lieutenant of Squad 9
Torik was very impressed, but not surprised by his Captain dodging his attack. Torik very much with Shan when he stated that when a division works as separate entities it never works, but he also knew it depended on the powers of the individual in a one on one fight such as this. Torik was ready for the vertical swing and was surprised that his Captain would come so close to a wind elemental user such as himself. As he saw Shan's zanpaktou ready for the vertical swing Torik also swung vertically to match his attack and parry, but at the same time as his swing Torik also release another wind blast as their swords parried. If this attack was successful it would normally cause major damage to the opponents body, but maybe Shan's zanpaktou would save him. Torik was hoping for this, he was hoping to push his Captain to use his be at his best as well so Torik would know how he truly fought. Also he had never used this technique on a Captain before, Torik wanted to know how effective it was against Captain level opponents.

The heavy blast of wind hit the ground where Shan was standing moments before, but his visage had blurred and disappeared completely seconds before the attack had hit. Without a second to spare, a voice called out from above. "Hado Sixty-Three. Raikōhō!" A massive bolt of electrical energy fired down from Shan's open hand, aiming to spear Torik completely through. Shan landed a few yards away from where the kidou hit, and held his sword out in front of him with two hands. He knew Torik was trying to get him to reveal his zanpaku-to's abilities. Many spoke of them, and with good reason. Many elements were dangerous, yes, but where could you hide from earth?
It was for this very reason he only activated his zanpaku-to when it was entirely necessary. Which wasn't often, considering many overlooked the benefits of strategy and finesse, instead flailing about with their shun-po and flashy zanpaku-to effects. Shan put them in line soon enough. And that is what made him an excellent captain. He not only had the power to keep his position, but he had the ability to teach others how to think beyond their means, simply by fighting him.

Torik saw as his attacked missed and Shan was gone, he knew he had used Shunpo but where did he go? Then he heard the voice from above, causing him to raise his head to look. When he did the Hadou was already shooting toward him, Torik acted immediately by preforming a back flip to avoid the attack by inches. However, the shock from the blast caused the ground to shake making Torik lose his balance as he landed, causing him to drop on one knee. He instantly looked up and pointed two fingers at his Captain again. "Carriage of thunder. Bridge of a spinning wheel. With light, divide this into six. Bakudou Sixty-One: Rikujokoro! His voice echoed through the dojo. Just then six thin wide beams of light shot out of Torik's fingers and flew toward Shan, attempting to bind him by slamming into his midsection to hold him in place. With the incantation recited the binding kidou would be even stronger if successful.

"Good." Shan spoke, when he realized what kidou Torik was using. As Torik spoke the incantation, Shan stood straight and grabbed a hold of his bare blade with his left hand, holding his soul cutter out in front of him almost like an offering. ""Very good. Rise, Tenchikaibyaku." His blade shone brightly, and as he pulled it apart it formed into two separate pieces, morphing to form two tonfa that he held against his forearm; they were beautiful, covered in veins of gold and silver, encrusted with jewels and a razor-sharp diamond blade on the outsides. "Tenchuu." He spoke softly, and stomped his foot on the ground. A series of thick earthen pillars rose in front of Shan, and the thin beams sunk into their surface, and popped a good distance out the other side, and stopped. Then the pillars crashed back into the earth, snapping the beams of light during re-entry.
Shan stood there, powerful in his small frame, completely different in stance from before. "Now is the time to be careful, Torik. Koudo Chuuten!" He pointed his right arm at his lieutenant, and without rumbling or a noise to warn of their coming, a series of spikes exploded from the earth below Torik, looking to spear him in the legs. A little different than the blunt technique of his unreleased state, but the principle was the same. Maim, and render your opponent helpless.

Torik Ishikawa Lieutenant of Squad 9
Torik looked in amazement as his Captain released his zanpaktou, it truly was awesome. He used a technique from his Shikai form to block a level sixty Kidou, badass. He thought to himself, he wasn't even sure if his Kaze Senshu would stand a chance against his Captain's Tenchikaibyaku. Then Torik received Shan's warning and knew there would be an attack coming from the ground. He couldn't hear it, but he jumped into the air at the same moment the spikes came out of the ground. Unfortunately he could not completely avoid them, as he jumped one of the spikes pierced his right calf muscle. Torik used Shunpo to appear in the air about as high as Shan was, but a few feet away from him. "Nice move Captain, without your words there would have been no warning to that attack and I would have been finished." This was the second time Torik avoided a serious injury, his Captain was really keeping him on his toes in this spar.
Torik took a deep breath and then exhaled slowly. I need complete focus for this technique, even then it might not have full effect on a Captain. He thought to himself as he readied himself for his more power technique in Shikai form, the Wind Prison. Torik slashed toward Shan releasing another wind blast that shot right at him. He waited a moment before slashing again to send another wind blast flying behind that one. This might have seemed like a pitiful attempt at an attack, but what his Captain didn't know was that what makes these blasts different from the first one he shot earlier. Torik had full control of these blast of wind for a short period of time as long as he kept his focus. [Post 1/2]

"You are welcome. But do not expect the same kindness a second time." Shan mused, facing Torik when he appeared. Tenchikaibyaku was, in a word, badass. It was the greatest earth-based zanpaku-to in existence, capable of untold devastation. The fact that it had chosen Shan was a blessing and a curse. It did make him a mighty force to be reckoned with, but it made him a target; people constantly wishing to prove themselves against the mighty blade and it's wielder. It was tedious and brought Shan no pleasure. But his lieutenant was not disappointing him, yet. And that was promising.
When the wind blasts came at him, he pounded the ground with his foot again. "Tenchuu!" Solid blocks of earth rose before Shan, and in succession shot closer and closer to the man, providing a barrier between the wind blasts and Shan. But as they continued to shoot out from the ground, it was obvious that unless he moved they would burst out from underneath him and strike him from below.

Torik Ishikawa Lieutenant of Squad 9
Torik saw the earth coming closer and closer to him, but he needed to keep his focus on the wind attacks or they would fade away. He clapped his hands together and then separated them, this brought the wind blasts closer together but then they separated. One attack going right and the other going left, both going around the earth that came from the ground. The blasts were now on both sides of his Captain and were within range for the Wind Prison technique. Hopefully his attack would hit before Torik was struck by the earth coming his way. The two wind blast then spiraled around Shan, almost like a wind vortex. If not avoided, this vortex will cut and shred anything within it. Torik kept his focus, knowing that soon his Captain's earth attack would soon strike him. But he didn't want to go out without giving it everything he's got and showing his Captain that even though he might be defeated he wont back down and he will push through to the very end. [Post 2/2]
