So what did you hear about/see/read that made you become obsessed with PotO? Why do you like it so much? What is your story as a phan? I thought it would be fun to compare experiences. I'm infamous for doing this.

My first encounter was back when I was about seven or eight, and my mom was walking the dogs and I was bored so I turned on Wishbone and saw that episode and immediately became entranced with it. I remember feeling very sorry for Erik and wanting to be in the show myself. That was strange for me at that age because I had a weirdo fear of deformities, which makes me think that his deformity wasn't very bad at all, although I don't remember at all what he looked like.

And then later I had talked my mom into going to see Lord of the Rings with me (don't remember which one) because I had nobody else to go with then, and I saw the preview for PotO and I remembered my obsession with it and nearly freaked out but pretended not to know what it was about so that my mom would talk about it. It was funny, I said something that was very uncharacteristic of me, from what I can remember, it was something like "That looks like a weird movie...it looks like it's been made before...what's it about?" even though I never say stuff like that when I don't know what the movie's about. But somehow it worked and my mom wasn't suspicious. Meanwhile I planned to see it somehow. Now, except for my talking about the weirder versions of the movie that I excuse away as having heard about from a friend who's a horror movie buff (who is sorta based on a real friend of mine) as well as talking her into renting the DVD of the original Lon Chaney version because "I wanted to see what it was about", she knows nothing of my secret life as a phan. Although she does say that I "will become obsessed" when I see the Lon Chaney version. I was thinking "The little you know...."

Okay, I'll shut up before you all bash my head in, if you've even read down to this point gonk .

My first relatively Phan experience was hearing about the musical on the radio when I was about 8. I did not know anything about the story, but when I went to the library, they had a universal Monsters adaptation. Yeah, it ws the Claude Rains version, which is strangely more entertaining than the movie. I liked the story, even though it was off. In High School, A friend of mine had seen it and she told me part of the story (the IE Not scarred by acid part) I felt pretty sory for Erik there. I went to the mall a little while later and picked up the Leroux book. I fell in love with the story then, and have been a dedicated Phan ever since. (^).^

I've loved POTO since I was around one or two. My parents always listened to the tape in the car and so that meant that I listened to it. I remember being about two and always asking to listen to Masquerade and at around 4 or 5 listening to the highlights CD asking what was happening in each song and hoping that one day that I could see it ^^

^_^ I was raiding my parent's CD's (Are whole family likes to go to musicals and junk. We own lots of musical CD's movies, you name it we've got it) And was like: (i was 8 ) "Ohh......the cover is pretty...." So i pop it in the stero and kept listening to 'the phantom of the opera' song, jammin to da goodness of MC and SB (original casting highlighs CD ) and got all happy. Then put it off for 4 years. The the movie comes and im all: OMFG I HAVE TEH AWSOME CD!! So i listen to it again and discovered the awsomeness of the OTHER songs (because when i was 8 i only listned to POTO) like my now one of favorites Masquerade. And that CD was in my CD player for teh next month as i waited not-so-paitently for the movie. Saw it. Joined teh guild. Got movie CD.....read book.......then started typing about the histery of her obsession on the computer......oh....and thats it. Here i am! ^-^

When I was 5, I remember that the Phantom of the Opera came to play in Washington DC for a while. My parents went to see it, and when they came back they told me how cool it was. So I begged them to take me to see it. They said 'no'. Still, I persisted.

After 12 damn years of begging, they FINALLY gave in, and my dad took me up to Baltimore to see it. I bought almost everything they had at the little booth (bwahaha), and when I saw it, I was madly in love. Gary Mauer was just AMAZING as Erik. The day after, I went up to my book store and got everyhting Phantom-related I could find, and lived happily ever after.

And then the movie came out. biggrin Me and my friends went to see it (in costume!), sang, got in for free, and generally had the coolest time ever. And now I have corrupted my best friend to be the most obsessive phan ever! Bwahahaha!

Well, I must have been an idiot when I was 10 years old, because my parents OFFERED to take me to go see the stage show in San Fransisco, but being the little kid I was, I TURNED IT DOWN!!! They had backstage passes and everything, and I said no!!! I rue the day I did that >.<

Anyway, then only about a month and a half ago I saw the movie, and suddenly I found myself obsessed with Erik's character, and unable to stop breaking into songs from the stageshow in public... And then I joined the Phantom Phan guild, and I read the original novel.... And now I'm trying to draw lots of Phantom fanart.... And someday I WILL go see the stageshow dangit!!! gonk I was such an idiot... That was an opportunity of a lifetime...

((By the way, the only way my dad got a backstage pass is because he's a doctor and he helped one of the costume designers in that production...))

XD; For years, I'd always been curious about PotO... I'd wanted to see it on Broadway, and my mom sort of did, too... Dad really didn't though. XD But finally, we got free tickets from my dad's customers.. (He's the boss of our little carpentry... XD; ) since they owed us money... so mom and I said we HAD to see it... XDDD So we did. Second row seats. D: It was amazing. *has a little PotO keychain I got there* T__T Or DID have one... *can't find it*

But anyway, that's when I was obsessed. D: And I ranted and ranted to my friend, and at first she sort of humoured me, but eventually tired of my ranting, because she would be too busy ranting aobut the Rocky Horror Picture Show... thing... which I never saw. So she eventually dissuaded me from my obsession.

And then, at last, in December... I was sitting on the couch, flipping through the channels...

"So let's see our forecast for t-"
"Waaaaaaaa-oh-aaaay! (XD Do NOT ask.)"
"Mr, Clean, Mr. Clean!"
"Blah blah blah *PotO music* PotO movie, blah blah blah..."

XD I squealed SOOO loudly, I scared my mom in the next room. So I've seen the movie twice, and I have yet to let my obsession falter for a moment. D: And as for my friend whom didn't like me liking PotO... I don't care for her much anymore. @_@; I've noticed how... clingy she is. I can't get a moment alone if she's within a 20 foot radius and spots me. Ever. ._. Even though by now, she should know me well enough to know I need my space. Even if I'm obviously doing something else. Like reading PotO or something. Because then she hovers. And leans over me. D: And gets her hair all over my head. I HATE that! XP Bah... but I'm not here to rant about social problems. XD;

The wonderful tale of Scully and how she came to know the (magical) world of The Phantom of the Opera:

Right. In 8th grade I was wondering around in our tiny, crappy, public library. Most of my favorite books are classics, and most of them are gothic classics. I don't know why, I just really love Dracula, Frankenstein, The Scarlet Letter, and so on so forth. Wondering and looking for a classic gothic book to read, I came across one of the granddaddys of all classic gothic novels, one that I had been meaning to read for some time; The Phantom of the Opera. I checked it out.

I got so into the book I finished it within a day of getting it. So, I read it again. That's when a deep seed of love for the characters and story was sewn (Can I get an "Amen" ladies and gentle men?).

Now, being as I am also a huge musical/theater obsessie, the next step was too obviously get into the musical. I had known about the musical for a long time, but choose not to get into it because I always like to read the book first (before I ever see/hear the musical/film- I did this with Les Mis too) and I always had some other musical show I wanted to get into before Phantom (I'm weird). 4 Days after finishing the book for the second time I went out and got the original cast highlights.

I'm one of those people that when they like something, they educate them selves fully on that thing (I dislike being ignorant). Needless to say, I'm pretty much a Phantom Junkie. Have been now for 5 years and running. That's not as long as many people here, but my real love of Phantom is the Book. The musical is just a awesome plus.

Well...I've been looking for the novel in our local Barnes N' Noble since I found out about the new movie (I had run my old copy into the ground! sweatdrop ) and, sadly, our Barnes N' Noble kept it's ONLY copy in the kids section! THE KIDS SECTION! I curse Barnes N' Noble. The one place I DIDN'T look...ahem...

But I've loved Phantom since I saw the Lon Chaney movie when I was around four. xD It scared me senseless because I was quite young and had an impressionable mind. (Not that my parents, who let me watch South Park at six, noticed.) But I was completely entranced by the story of the Phantom Erik and from then on, loved Phantom. 3nodding

I heard the original soundtrack quite a bit when I was younger, my mom played it a bunch... and my sister got to go on a school field trip to see it!!! I was mad because I wanted to go hear the orcastra play... I didn't know the story... the characters.. just the music...
but now that I've seen the movie, I have a passion for both....
most people want to be christine, to sing with Erik... I don't want to sing, I want to play his music and have him sing... that would be a dream... I live for playing music... It is my dream to play in the Orcastra of a Phantom Play....

Well...how I had heard of the Phantom of the Opera was actually a mistake a few years ago. It was after school and I had finished my homework...and I had nothing to do. The book had caught my attention and I just plucked it off from the shelf, leafing through it's contents. It had been a book about the play and how it worked. Plus the history of it too. Being there for an hour by myself, I had read a good portion of it and actually liked it. I never was able to afford to go to New York and see a Broadway presentation of the play so I just imagined it in my mind. I had heard the main theme once and I interestingly enough loved that as well.

I had become addicted to the love story because it greatly resembled the ONLY love story I could tolerate in my childhood years: Beauty and the Beast. Eventually, I had become obsessed upon reading it. I had found a great deal of the Phantom's [Erik] characteristics to be like mine...and of course, I further investigated his character through some other interpretations of the Phantom of the Opera. When I had heard the movie was coming out this year, I had to see it...

The only thing I found different between the movie version and the other versions is that they had romanticized the Phantom a great, great deal. Does anyone else see that, or is it just me?

I've loved it since I was little...as long as I can remember. Some of the music is absolutely gorgeous, though as I've been exposed to more I'm not as obsessed (Queen of the Night! ~gasp swoon~)

And I'm a coloratura soprano....the top of my range is an octave above the high note at the end of the title song.

And I'm a Christine. Brunette, and had long hair most of my life.

I liked the eerie coincidences. ^_^;
