T'rel was making his way to the kitchens. He had a feeling he'd upset his good friend Cesa somehow; the looks she'd given him at the hatching hinted at that, anyway. He wasn't sure why she would be angry at him for saving her dragon, but...he had to talk to her. He walked into the kitchens and sat on one of the counters. He snagged a cooling bubblypie and bit into it. It wasn't long until the hatching feast started, but the Weyrleader tended to visit the kitchens between meals. It really was a wonder how he stayed so thin.

He was looking for Cesa. He figured she'd be there, even if she had Impressed. She had worked there for turns! Shards if a dragon choosing her would change that. He wanted to apologize for whatever he'd done to upset her.

"Cesa? Cesa, I wanted to talk to you."

It would be hard to tell amongst the hustle and bustle of the kitchens that one of them didn't belong there. In fact the situation appeared quite usual when a feast had to be prepared. The kitchens moved with a practiced order that looked like utter chaos to those not involved, but they had run this course many times. Each knew their place in the workings and there was constant support from those around them. Despite the large task ahead the kitchens and it's inhabitants seemed cheerful. It was almost impossible to spot Cesa moving amongst everyone else. Dragon or no, she had jobs to do. It had only been a small surprise when she had appeared after the hatching with a her dragon in tow. Anyone who knew the girl knew that she would come back, Cesa wasn't one to skip out on a job.

At first glance nobody would've guessed that there was a dragon in the kitchen. There were firelizards everywhere, the small green seemed to fit in easily. Yodith lay quietly in a shelved alcove watching Cesa work. Beside her sat Teller, who seemed very confused by the situation. This couldn't be a dragon. It was far too small. Dragons were big. This was not. The poor green just wasn't smart enough to understand how complicated the situation was and understand why Yodith was only the size of a large firelizard.

When Cesa's name was called all three females turned to the sound. Giving a happy chirp, Teller jumped off the shelf and swooped off to greet the familiar person. Yodith's eyes turned to her chosen and patiently waited for her decision. There were so many confused thoughts in her head. Working was a distraction she needed, a way to temporarily shut out the things that had happened to her until she was ready to deal with it. Now however she had to deal with the situation now, it wasn't going to wait for her. She was lucky really they hadn't tried to drag her out already, considering how she seemed to practically vanish after the hatching. Cesa hadn't gone to the barracks like she should have. Instead carrying Yodith straight to the kitchens to hide.

Letting out a sigh Cesa crossed the kitchen to Yodith. The small green climbed into her chosen's arms when she held them out for her. For a moment they simply stood together; Yodith's head resting on Cesa's cheek and Cesa holding Yodith like she was the only thing that mattered. Alright it is, Mine, with you, I am. Lifting her her head Cesa smiled down at the little green. Cradling Yodith to her, she made her way to the counter where T'rel was. Teller was chattering away happily and Cesa managed to force her face to go blank.

"What do you want, T'rel?"

"To apologize," T'rel's response was short, but the way the young man was twisting and wringing his hands indicated he wanted to say more. He'd finished off his bubblypie in another bite, carefully wiping off any left over juices on his lips on a hankerchief. He had no idea what he had done to upset Cesa--but he had to apologize. It was that he'd upset her at all that bothered him.

"You seemed upset with me earlier," he added. "Er, so...do you like being a dragonrider?" Typical question when he was addressing a new Weyrling; but Cesa wasn't a normal weyrling. T'rel knew she had never wanted to be one. She had had other dreams. He knew from the moment he'd Impressed Zelith, he could have never dreamed of being anything else.

"Is Yodith adjusting well?" he asked. "That's her name, yes? Zelith told me." The green was small. He'd already heard people suggesting it wouldn't live. That angered him. He'd felt something at the hatching. He'd known the dragonet had needed assistance. "She's a beautiful green," he added.

Cesa's face remained blank as T'rel explained he'd come here to apologise and that she'd seemed upset earlier. Of course she'd been upset, he'd taken it upon himself to break one of the most basic rules they had. You never get involved in hatchings. Even the healers were supposed to wait until there weren't unimpressed hatchlings running about. But had T'rel? No. He'd run on in with even the gold unimpressed. What if one of them had decided to jump and maul him to death? She'd probably have been less angry at him had he waited until after and not risked himself and other dragons with his stunt. Though she liked to think she'd still be mad at him.

Cesa practically bristled at T'rel's question. He knew full well that she hadn't wanted to Impress. And how could she even claim to be a dragonrider? It would be a miracle if Yodith ever even managed to be large enough to ride. Yodith lifted her head and was about to voice a protest when Cesa quietened her with the assurance that she would love her no matter her size, whether she could ride her or not. That seemed enough to reassure the young hatchling, who was confident she'd easily grow large enough for Cesa to ride her, but was content to let her chosen be for now. "Up to this point it's been fine, but I can't see it getting any better." She couldn't ignore his question, but she could easily keep her responses as short as possible.

"She's a few candlemarks old, T'rel, it's hardly a lot to adjust to. And yes her name is Yodith." Cesa knew full well what was being said. She had to worry for her green though. She was so small, the amount of extra care the delicate thing would need seemed immense. She couldn't eat as much as the other hatchlings in one go, but still seemed to want the same amount. Cesa looked down at the dragon in her arms at T'rel's mention that she was beautiful, well she wasn't going to argue with him there. A small hint of a smile touched her face as Yodith nuzzled against her hand and pointed out that she had better not argue that point.

T'rel sat on a counter and stared at his friend, arms folding behind his back as he leaned backwards. "Why?" he asked simply. "Why wouldn't things get better? She's clearly a strong green, Cesa." He reached out a hand to stroke Yodith with a small smile. He felt it was the first he'd had in sevendays. "Nice to meet you, Yodith," he said. "You've given her enough to eat?" he added, glancing at Cesa. His brown eyes were concerned. Had Cesa come to the kitchen immediately after Impressing, or had she stopped long enough to let the little green eat and rest?

"Most dragons eat themselves into sleep. Zelith did. He was gorging like a gold." He gave another smile at the memory. It had been over five turns ago, but that memory was instilled in his head like it'd been in the last sevenday. "She'll be fast," he mused aloud, almost as if speaking for his own benefit, rather than his friend's. "Very fast. See her wings, Cesa? They're larger compared to her body than other Weyrlings'. She'll be an excellent flier." He gave the girl a reassuring smile.

"L'ren'll be interested, I think, in teaching you two. Weyrling lessons start in the morning."

A sigh escaped Cesa as she shook her head. "Look at her, T'rel. It doesn't matter that she's strong. Do you realise how much extra care she's going to need? What if she's too small to fight? What are we supposed to do then? I won't have people thinking bad of her." Cesa sighed again and looked away. He just didn't understand. He'd tell her that everything would be fine, same as he pretty much always did. To T'rel everything would be fine.

Yodith pressed herself closer to Cesa when the girl looked away. It wasn't for herself, it was to comfort her rider. She was just so sad. When T'rel reached out to her the green leaned forward just enough for her minute head to touch his fingers. Her blue eyes whirled as they settled on T'rel's face. Stop upseting mine, you will. Sad, your words make her. Yodith did not approve of T'rel making hers sad. True, she did not fully understand why his questions made her sad, but they did, so he should stop asking them.

Had Cesa not been holding Yodith her hands would surely be on her hips at T'rel's question. Raising an eyebrow she looked rather unimpressed with the insinuation that she possibly wasn't taking care of Yodith. "T'rel, I have been watching hatchlings grow since before you got here. I help prepare the food they eat, I know how much she needs." Hatchlings seemed to eat more than the adults did in their first meal. It wasn't until after a sufficent amount of meat had been prepared that any of them could afford to go to the hatching. Rather miss the first egg hatch than deal with shrieking hungry dragonets after.

Both Cesa and Yodith listened to what T'rel said about Yodith. For a moment Cesa managed to forget everything else and simply be proud of the green and her predicted ability. Yodith raised a wing and stretched it out, her whirling eyes examined the limb and she moved it up and down, back and forth and in most other direction she could think of. The little green became uninterested in the two humans around her, even if part of her was always with Cesa, to simply focus on the movements of her own muscles. Mecesa on the other hand rolled her eyes at T'rel apparent need to point out when lessons started. Honestly he was treating her like she was some sheltered hold-child that had only just got here.

T'rel seemed surprised to be addressed by Yodith. His eyes widened, and he nodded. He hadn't meant to upset Cesa! Really he hadn't. "I'm sorry, Yodith," he apologized sincerely. "I wasn't intending to upset yours." He paused, and looked from the tiny green to her rider. "Look at her, Cesa," he echoed the girl with a smile. "Look at her proportions. She'll grow a great deal. Do you remember the stories about the white dragon?" he asked. "No one believed it would live. No one believed it'd fly thread. I've always found dragons do just as they believe they'll do. Ask her, Cesa."

"She'll need extra care, yes--but I don't suggest treating her too differently than the other weyrlings. I don't want people getting the impression that she's weaker than the others--she's small, yes. She might take longer to reach her full growth--I imagine you'll be able to ride her."

He frowned slightly. Shard it, he'd forgotten Cesa had lived in the Weyr longer than he had. He seemed apologetic. "I'm sorry," he said. "I forgot you weren't an average candidate for a moment, and was trying to be helpful." He pulled an awkward face.

Yodith remained silent, her point had been made. The green made a strange noise like a 'hm' and then nestled back into her rider's arms. Cesa couldn't help but smile down at Yodith, it was strange having someone who knew what she was feeling regardless of her attempts to hide the emotion. Teller glided over and settled on her shoulder. She was forgetting her, she knew what hers felt. Cesa smiled and inclined her head to the firelizard, having no hands free to stroke her. Of course Teller knew how she was feeling, but she also didn't tell people off for upsetting her.

"You know what stories are like, T'rel, one person says one thing and it all gets out of hand. What if the white dragon wasn't as small as everyone says it was? They'd call it small even if it was the size of a average green." It only took a few days for a story to get out of hand and the white dragon stories had had hundreds of turns to be blown out of proportion and made into something it wasn't. Cesa looked down at Yodith and sighed again, she'd been doing an awful lot of that today. Raising her head again the hatchling looked up into her chosen's face. Fine, I will be. Stronger than they think, I am.

Cesa shrugged when T'rel apologised. She would have waved it off, but again found herself without the hands to do so. "It's fine. At least you were trying to be helpful." She had worse said and could see much more coming her way, no point getting irritable about him trying to help her.

"I don't think so," T'rel mused. "But maybe. I always thought they were comparing the white dragon to greens and blues. They wouldn't have had another white dragon to compare it to," he stroked Yodith once more. "I think, like the white dragon, Yodith's special. Who knows what she'll do for Pern? The white dragon's said to have helped rid Pern of Thread...But Thread came back."

He paused, and looked into Cesa's eyes briefly. "Besides," he said, "I've found that dragons can do whatever they think they can do--and she clearly believes in you--and herself." He took another bubblypie.

"Are you going to the feast?" he asked with a smile. "I know we'd all love you to be there."

"Well don't go putting that experctation on her." Cesa may not be happy about impressing, but that sure as between didn't mean she was going to let T'rel use Yodith in any mad attempt to stop thread. He could use his own dragon for that and Yodith had only just hatched anyway. Cesa wasn't planning on letting Yodith anywhere near thread for a long while yet. Mecesa looked down at Yodith when T'rel said she was capable of doing whatever she thought she could do. Well, she'd be lucky if she would be able to hold Yodith back from anything in that case, the green already seemed confident in her abilities.

Mecesa paused when the question was raised on whether she would go to the feast. It was tempting to laugh at the idea that everyone would love for her to be there. She doubted it, quiet significantly. "I can't, I have work to do." She'd probably have worked for the majority of the feast if she hadn't impressed, now she was determined to work until she was allowed to escape to sleep.

"Of course not," T'rel said, shaking his head. "She's special, but I wouldn't put any pressure on her. You two will have enough pressure being Weyrlings! I look forward to seeing what happens next. You are very talented, Cesa--you'll be a wonderful dragonrider. And Yodith will be a wonderful, wonderful dragon. She already is."

He paused and nodded. "Alright, I'll see you another time, then," he said. "I'll bring you something from the feast to celebrate. Impressing's a thing to be celebrated, especially when it comes out and surprises you."
