The sun was barely peeking into the side of the barn, silhouetting horses, saddles, and dust motes against hot yellow backdrop. Using a handkerchief plucked from her pocket, Harper Rafferty wiped away the sweat on her brow from the day's work. She folded her hands over the hilt of the pitchfork she was using to clean up hay and perched her chin there. A moment of rest accompanied by the soothing drone of cicadas. Chanook, an old paint, leaned his head towards her and gave a deep nicker. Harper rolled her eyes and fetched him some nearby fresh alfalfa -- he had everyone at the barn trained that way.

It had been one of those long days, but a very rewarding one: tack was polished, manes were trimmed, horses were lunged. She had even gotten to exercise Janissary on the jumps! And now, just some cleaning up to do. Luckily, Harper had conveniently made a deal for some help for today. Speaking of, it was about time to check up on her. Setting the pitchfork aside, Harper walked to one of the big, horse entrances -- this one facing the grassy washing area.

"How you holding up, Pene? Jani giving you any trouble?" she called out.

Penelope rather liked horses, to be honest. They were pretty and athletic, carrying an air of grace and authority that the girl found attractive. Plus, seeing how the individuals could come together to form a herd, each unique horse contribituting something to the whole... it gave the quiet girl hope that maybe she could help in some way too without having to step up and become the center of attention.

She had been happy and excited to come and help Harper in the barn, eager to repay her friend for her aid in creating cupcakes. In truth, she hadn't known how much help she could be... but she was good at following directions and had been able to fulfill the simple tasks her friend gave her. And then had come Harper's suggestion to feed this horse an apple as a treat before he had to be cleaned up. Well, sure, Pene could do that!

Which meant that she had to hold out the apple to the creature who seemed to be eyeing it with suspicion. Penelope wasn't far away, standing more or less directly in front of the horse in the cleaning area and struggling to hold the fruit still. In the palm of her hand. Yep, all she had to do was just... stand there and wait until those strong teeth came down and plucked the fruit up. Wait until he could potentially BITE HER HAND... and oh god he was reaching for the fruit!

The normally composed girl eeked as the horse chomped down on the apple in her hand, and she unceremoniously dropped it in the dirt as she backed away "N-no... Jani's fine... though I dropped his apple..."

Harper didn't even try to stifle her laugh when "Jani"ssary managed to intimidate himself out of his treat. It wasn't entirely his fault, however -- poor Penelope looked like she thought he might lunge at her throat at any minute or at least at her fingers. She had seen it enough times before, when the barn offered beginner horseriding lessons in the summer: if there were two things greenhorns shied away from it was teeth and poop. It was extra funny, though, just because she had seen the maroon-eyed girl dodge a damn hellbeast in the library with more confidence; life and death situations had a way of doing that.

"Horses are herbivores, you know," she called out jokingly. Harper leaned the pitchfork safely against an empty board and quickly covered the couple of yards distance to the washrack. Offering a reassuring smile to her flustered friend, she picked up the slightly muddy apple, gave it a spray from the hose, and handed it back. Janissary was already nickering and pulling at his cross-ties a bit, but he would just have to be patient.

"Just let him do all the work. Think of your hand like a plate. You know not to bite the plate when you're eating, right? And their muzzles and lips are sensitive; they're a lot like a super short elephant nose." To emphasize her point, Harper grasped the horse's hard upper lip between her thumb and forefinger, making it wiggle about.

A blush immediately coated Penelope cheeks as she replied with a small smile, "Yes, I know they're herbivores... but they have really big teeth all the same." Yet, whatever awkwardness may have appeared on her face dissolved into incredulous laughter as her friend made Jani's nose wriggle about. It was just... it was so silly, that such a graceful, intimidating creature had a lip that could be so... so floppy! Under the teal-haired girl's steady hand, her own fear seemed as ridiculous, and that only made her laugh all the harder, half-snorting before she stopped to catch her breath. "Okay... okay... one more time..."

More comfortable now with Harper's reassurance, she took the apple and tried again. The apple was a wet, sticky mess, thanks to the horse's intial bite and then the hosing necessary to clean off the mud. A small grimace crossed her face as she extended her flat palm; despite the humerous lip waggle of a moment before, she was still somewhat apprehensive. She just kept repeating to herself, like a mantra, the information her friend had given her and placed trust in her knowledge. A plate. It's just a plate. He knows not to eat the plate. Harper told me so.

Janissary, thankfully, did not eat the plate.

He bit large chunks from the apple and merely muzzled around the timid girl's hand. It was sloppy, with spit and apple bits everywhere, but not dangerous. There was actually a small chance he might, if not because of an accident then because he was feeling mischievous around the new girl who he could obviously get a reaction out of. But Harper wasn't going to tell that to Pene. Instead, she just smiled as two of her best friends got to know one another.

"There. That's great," she said while giving Jani a pat on the neck. She was worried that Pene wouldn't want to come over to the barn at all, given how naturally gritty it could get between the dirt and animals everywhere. Even if her best friend never came back again, this place was a big part of Harper's life -- something like that should be shared.

The had been reduced to slivers and the horizon was blooming red and purple clouds reflecting the rays. Turning around, Harper took his halter from where it was hanging in the wash stall and slipped it over his head when he was done with the apple. "We should get him inside before it gets completely dark. Can you close the barn gate behind us?" she asked, beginning to walk Jani to his stall.

The feeling of the horse eating the apple from her hand was... well, it was strange. On the one hand, the slobber and sticky apple bits were uncomfortable, and Penelope half-wondered if there was a towel or a bottle of hand sanitizer around for once she was finished. On the other hand, she couldn't help but marvel at the velvet feel of the muzzle itself and how it could be manipulated to get the desired treat. She tentatively petted Janissary's forehead with her free hand, not exactly sure if this action was correct - he was a horse, afterall, and not a dog - but it felt correct.

With the apple devoured and Harper taking over the horse again, the dark-haired teen was glad to have something else to do. "Of course... one second." Penelope held her still-dirty hand awkwardly; she didn't want to get apple gunk on her clothes or anything else, for that matter. When no towel or sink presented itself, however, she bit her lip and headed out to the barn gate, messy hand and all. With one hand she dragged the gate shut, grunting slightly at how unexpectedly heavy it was. Task complete, she made her way back to Harper, calling out, "All done! Is there anything else I can help with?"

Walking Jani into the barn, Harper smirked at Pene's dainty discomfort with the slobbery, leftover apple bits. There were things that still grossed her out personally like that -- in part due to her journeys into paranormal and copypasta forums -- but she was desensitized to the typical goings-on of the barn long ago. (This, of course, included giving messy-pants Jani apples.) What made Pene less than annoying concerning such things was that she would usually push through the discomfort wordlessly -- like opening the barn door with a messy hand or getting flour all over the kitchen. Maybe not fully-fledged spunk, but something close. All the same, it was better to just let Pene clean up.

"You can wash your hands in the office," Harper answered the unasked question, tilting her head toward a break in the rows of stalls that held an open door and some finished wood paneling. "Hit the main lights while you're in there, too; look for the label. I'll be in Jani's stall!"

Janissary was nudging at his halter now, eager to return to his stall as per his routine and not exactly caring why Harper was dragging her feet tonight. When she turned to let him walk into his stall, her eyes were dragged to her nearby backpack. "This is going to be so fun! ... I hope."

While Penelope tried to keep her complaints to a mimimum, there was no missing the relief on her face when she heard her friend utter the words 'wash your hands.' While it had only been a few minutes since she had been covered in apple and slobber, to her it was a small enternity of ickiness and finally she would be able to be clean again! She made her way towards the office

The washing itself took only a few minutes; the water was cold, but welcome, and removed the offending mess well enough. The towel she used to pat her hands dry was dirtier than she might have wanted--but again, it did its job. From there, the dark-haired teenager moved to turn on the lights. Well, as best she could in the somewhat dark office. She rested a now clean hand She stared at the row of switches, biting her lip as she peered at the labels looking for the right one to flip. When she reached the fourth switch, she was fairly certain she had the right one... but just to be sure, after she flipped it on, she called to her friend, "Harper? Did that work?"

The large lights attached along the beam mechanically popped to life and hummed in their metal bowls for a second before going silent. Everything just as it should be. Harper slid the lock down on Jani's stall. She smirked as she knelt next to her backpack and pulled out... something.

"Almost! They're mislabeled a bit, so you actually need to flip the one next to it, too." She sneaked closer to the office's entrance, preparing the item in her hand for a bit of fun mischief. She hadn't expected to have this opportunity, but it was simply too good to pass up. It was something -- at least, mostly -- that the barn staff would pull on new employees, honestly. The unlabeled switch she had indicated was actually a bit of a dummy: it performed the opposite function of its sibling, with a slight, stuttering delay.

At first, she thought that she had succeeded. The lights came to life as they should... but then Harper told her that she had to flick the second switch too. "Oh... oh, sorry!" Penelope immediately apologized and worked to correct her mistake. Why the barn was designed in such a manner made little to no sense to her; in fact, the longer she stayed in this place, the less
logical it appeared to her. Surely the organization must work for Harper and the others that used the area more frequently, but... well, it plain didn't make sense to her. Her groping hand finally found the switch that Harper had indicated, and she flicked it up.

And nothing happened, or at least nothing seemed to happen... until the lights went out. Perfect. Penelope actually moved towards the door now, going to seek assistance. She wasn't just going to continue flipping switches with no real effect, not when her friend was there and could just show her what to do. She placed her hand on the knob as she called out, "Harper... I'm sorry to bother you but I just can't get it to work. I flipped both the switches but... I must've done something wrong..."

Harper easily tamped down the giggle that attempted to slither out as the lights flickered off. She was on a mission right now and hopefully there would be plenty of time for such things in just a moment. Luckily, she knew her way through the barn very well by now, even in pitch darkness. Not even the streetlights reached out this far. Her grip tightened on her chosen weapon. Besides, the door was just a few steps ahead...

The creak gave it away. And, you know, Penelope calling out so innocently as she opened said creaky door. There was a second where she began to wonder if her friend was consciously playing along, but it was far too late to stop the assault in the same one-minded way that she couldn't giggle. The door should be open wide enough now...

"BOO!" Harper simultaneously flipped the switch on her rather large flashlight and jumped in front of the entryway. The lens just below her face, the harsh light illuminated her face in sharply angled shadows (which may have been more impressive if she hadn't just yelled "boo," really).

When Harper didn't immediately answer, the dark-haired teen began to feel uneasy. While she had always had a somewhat nervous nature, her experiences as a Senshi had done nothing but given her more reason to fear the dark. She was going to repeat her call when she opened the door, but she didn't have the chance with what happened next. Shouting, Sharp light. Harsh angles. She couldn't help but scream and take a step back, raising her hands defensively.

But her hands soon fell as she realized what had happened. Penelope brought a hand to cover her chest, relief swelling up in her once the immediate panic faded. It was just Harper; Harper with a flashlight and taking advanage of the power outtage for a cheap scare, sure, but Harper all the same. She was so relieved, in fact, that her overly polite demeanor cracked and she gave her friend a playful shove, "I think your flashlight would be better used in helping me figure out how to get the power back on, by the way."

The teal haired girl cracked up at Penelope's reaction, shamelessly enjoying her own humor. She rolled with the shove, teetering and defenseless and unable to mount a 'counterattack' (she could admit that she deserved it, anyway). Typical as the light switch trick was for the barn, it never got old; it was actually pretty interesting to catalog the different reactions afterward. One girl had practically flown over the desk!

"Sure, one sec; you just have to flip one switch again." Gathering herself together, with a few laughs still haphazardly leaking out of the sides, Harper stepped inside the office and used her flashlight to find and flip the correct switch. "Just a little practical joke," she said unapologetically as the lights flickering back on as they had before. When her eyes adjusted to the brightness again, she gave Pene an excited look. "Thought it would be a good primer for the real entertainment I brought in my backpack. If you're still feeling up to it."

For her part, Penelope tried not to let the laughter get to her. The black-haired teen was... too accustomed to getting laughed at, jeered at, pointed at. People made fun of her for how often she read books. People made fun of her for her awkward conversation skills. People made fun of her because... well, sometimes just because they were mean. But Harper wasn't being mean. Harper wasn't laughing to be cruel; she was laughing at the joke. No one had gotten hurt, and no one had gotten made fun of. So, it was okay for Harper to laugh. Really.

Outwardly, however, the girl showed no signs of these conflicts. Penelope folded her arms across her chest, closing her eyes in faux contemplation. "Hm... I dunno, Harper. Ghost stories after being pranked? That might be a little... intense." When she opened her eyes again, however, the light shining in them indicated that she was willing to go along with their original plan. In a way, she had no choice but to do so--she liked Harper. She didn't want to do anything to ruin the first true friendship she had ever really had. "But we can try, anyway. Let's go get your backpack and get started. Um... if we're through with the horses, of course."

"Clever." She was impressed that Pene had figured out her little plan to tell ghost stories tonight. It was one of the qualities she really liked about the dark haired girl, outweighing some of her weaker points. "But intense is part of the fun, right?" Harper was sure that Pene was playing around... or perhaps doubted her storytelling ability. It was possible -- her friend knew that literature wasn't her strongest subject. She made a mental note to read extra creepily.

"No worries about the horses; they're are all out of the paddock and tucked in for the night!" As if to contradict her directly, Jani stuck his head out of his stall and let out a deep nicker. Harper retaliated by leaning her head out of the office, too, and giving him a glare. "Well, they're put up, anyway," she said, going out to grab her bag. Upon pulling the books out, she slung it over her shoulder and returned to the office. Sitting out in the dust with the horses may have had more ambiance, but Harper had reconsidered after seeing how Pene reacted to the apple-dirt slobber.

"Pick a seat," Harper motioned to two super fluffy chairs and a couch that took up the back of the room, "and tell me if you've heard of these."
