Well in my nook of the woods the leaves have fallen and the rain has come. This means one of two things to me- planting time and mushroom season has begun! heart
This being my favorite part of the year to be outside, I am looking forward to a bountiful harvest this year of Chanterelles, Blewits, Honey Mushrooms... well there's plenty of species in these oak filled hills of California.
Not only are there delicious mushrooms to eat, but there are mushrooms that you can make paint, dyes, and paper with too.
Please share your stories, or any recipes/ideas you have involving wild mushrooms! whee

I never really thought much of mushrooms until my sister got me into taking pictures of mushrooms. I saw a HUGE hallucinogenic mushroom the size of my head. I don't have enough knowledge or confidence to go out and pick edible ones though. We had a Fungus Among Us thing the other week, but it was a bit disorganized and I didn't go. (I didn't want to do the walk from 8 to noon, I was looking for an exhibit. Yeah, I'm a total lameo.) I know here that Oyster Mushrooms are/where pretty big. I remember a lot of people getting really territorial about picking. I've uploaded some 'shroom pictures on my Flickr if any one wants to take a gander: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pirhan/I'd love to hear stories and other information on them. 3nodding

Great pictures! I recognize a couple species in there... puff ball, and turkey tail to name a few.
Have you ever had an oyster mushroom? I hear they're pretty decent to the palette... I just bought 200 of these wooden dowels inoculated with Pearl Oyster mycelium... you "plant" them by drilling holes in a hard wood (oak, alder, elm, poplar, maple..) and then pounding these dowels in with a mallet and sealing it with organic wax.
They are supposedly an easy grow, taking as little as 6 months to colonize the log and fruit.
But where I'm at there aren't many people who know about/are interested in mushroom harvest so you can go out and pick them just as well.
Oyster mushrooms are supposedly a key species in breaking down pollutants such as petroleum, they will also eat cardboard, and coffee grinds. A fascinating mushroom for sure.

Only mushrooms I've had are the plain white mushrooms from the store, portobello's and morel mushrooms we used to pick ourselves. For some reason, mushrooms just aren't on my "Into My Tummy" radar. Apparently, the yellow coral mushroom is edible as well. There's a mushroom book in the library, but I'd still be hesitant to eat any. I've heard of the mushroom logs. In the garden centre I worked at had two. No one bought them though. When I get out of this shoebox, I might give those a try as you'd be sure what you're growing is edible. How much where the dowels? The mushroom log we had was... $50ish?

Just run an online search, Pirhan....I did, one day when I was bored, and found more mushroom-spore-inoculated logs, etc., than I ever dreamed I'd find! I think I had started with a search for winemaking equipment ( specifically, carboys), and ran into the mushrooms, then headed down that rabbit hole. I was amazed!

Haha, I'm tickled that you ended up on mushrooms after looking at wine. (I drank my first organic red wine the other day, delish! Except it kept making the chair move?)
I will definitely be checking out mushroom goodies for next season. Way too much on my plate for this season.

Mushrooms are fascinating organisms and I love to study them! I do not enjoy eating them however. sweatdrop

I'm really hoping that next year I can pick my own mushrooms. I didn't get the chance to this year nor do I have a dehydrator yet since I would want to stock up for the winter.

I wish I knew more about picking mushrooms. It's sad when people get territorial about picking something in an area that isn't owned by anyone.

I'm not a big fan of eating mushrooms nor do I pick the ones that grow in my backyard and the side of my house, however I enjoy observing all the different types of mushrooms. It's quite interesting looking for different specie of mushroom.
