Personality

Focused --
Whether its his job or something he has decided to commit himself to, Mu Ying gives a 150% into the things he does. His concentration is divine, the young man is able to keep still for up to 10 hours on his night watch. While he is mostly able to drive out all distractions from this mind, the prolonged loud noises of ceremonies throw him off and get on his nerves. Mu Ying compartmentalizes his life into work and play - he doesn't let his experiences during the day affect his work and upholds a strict personal work ethic. His daytime devil-may-care attitude and occasional sloppiness is in sharp contrast to his solemness on the job. He is one to get upset with himself for not doing a good job, though on the plus side, he is able to move on and focus on doing better next time instead.

Irritable --
In dealing with Mu Ying, his mother would offer a simple piece of advice: Don't wake him up. Who else would know better, having endured years of tantrums thrown every time she had to wake her son up for night duty (and in the morning, now that he has to attend the academy in the morning after his body clock had been switched) Snappish, crabby and grumpy after a nap, this was something that his mother's kindness cultivated since she couldn't bear to be strict and slap sense into him. Mu Ying is of course, aware of his bad manners; if one is able to endure the first 30 minutes of his nonsense and extra-crass remarks, he might just apologise for it. While his testiness in the morning is due to a lack of sleep, disrupting his focus is another way to get him to get a death glare from him. Despite this, he can be easy to get along with when he's awake and less grouchy, and given a bit of tolerance from the other party.

Nonjudgmental --
Having watched people and their interactions for almost his entire life, it would be easy for him to place others into stereotypes and draw quick conclusions about them. Mu Ying however, avoids doing so, knowing that it would affect the accuracy of the information in his reports (observations and empirical evidence only, something his father and he himself emphasize on). Still, there is a tendency for personal judgement to seep through, especially when he knows the people he's keeping an eye on personally. This situation presents itself as one of the greatest conflicts he faces on the job, and he has yet to overcome it fully despite his self-discipline. When it comes to personal interactions though, Mu Ying faces a harder time doing this, but ultimately maintains an open-minded stance towards others for most of it.

Indecisiveness --
While it is also true that Mu Ying is fickle with his food and the other trivial things, the young man is hesitant about making quick decisions, especially those that rely on his moral judgement. When conflict unfolds under his watch, take a kidnapping case for example, Mu Ying is sure to invoke standard protocol first (send out the owl and call for help, take down all observable features of the people involved) but it is the split second choice – to do something or not – that he finds hard to make. His indecisiveness stems from various reasons given different circumstances, be it his inability to be of much help (he was never trained extensively in combat), his fear of the fact that he may be jumping to a wrong conclusion, or that he simply does not trust his moral judgement at that point of time. Of course this is not to say that Mu Ying is incapable of making any judgement at all (he might succumb to making rash decisions during the day and off-duty), but it is the extremely delicate nature of his job as a watch man that amplifies his indecisiveness on what to do in these unconventional situations. Mu Ying's father, being a forward scout and having to constantly make decisions on his feet, takes great issue with this trait of his.

Hobbies

Tree Climbing --
Mu Ying enjoys standing at great heights and watching the city go by, even during the day (which in his opinion, is remarkably more cheerful). He would occasionally takes naps in the trees until the birds started settling on the incredibly still young man; they would wake him up and he would shoo them away irritably. The birds however, seem to have a natural affinity with him (as with any member of his family) and would keep coming back for his company.

Street games --
Mu Ying tries to make up for his deprived childhood by joining the kids as they play (they often jibe at him for being utter crap for his age. He IS improving though.). He would usually participate for a while before sidelining himself and watching the kids have at it for the other half. He is also apparently quite popular with the moms of the kids who come to watch over them as they play; they frequently engage in small chat while he's taking a break. His mom, Jia Yu, loves to tease him about that.

Quirks

Fussy eater --
The young man would literally window shop for food for hours before settling on something he'd like (and after which he would buy in bulk). His choice of food varies according to his mood, although he has a favourite treat in the form of dango, something he admits to being an acquired taste.

Sugar rush, Caffeine high --
Anything that keeps him awake in the day, Mu Ying would consume in large amounts. Three cups of tea and 10 sticks of dango are a daily routine; the tea house shopkeeper and attendants have stopped giving him quizzical looks for what looked like a man who was trying to drown himself in tea and satisfy an extraordinarily demanding sweet tooth. Despite his efforts, Mu Ying would still tend to doze off in class.

Teetotaler --
Mu Ying does not drink, his father does not drink, his entire family (alright, save a few) does not drink. Anything that would risk blurring ones senses, one should avoid – that is one of the things the Shen clan strictly upholds. Because Mu Ying has yet to have made any contact with alcohol, it is unknown if he can actually hold his drink ..... or is just a really bad drunk.

Family

Father -- 瞫俊悊 Shěn Jùn Zhé || Eagle companion -- 勇覈 Yŏng Hé
Widely regarded as the family's pride, Jun Zhe plays an integral role in the emperor's army as a forward scout along with his eagle Yong He. Mu Ying and his father have a mutual respect for each other; the former admires his father for his excellence, steadfastness and confidence while the latter recognises his son's astute sense of observation to be top-notch. Despite their similarities in character, the two clash where their modus operandi is concerned – Jun Zhe is a quick thinker and operates on his feet while Mu Ying prefers to take a step back and strategize, leading to the two bickering about which method is the best (there have been hits and misses for them both, since there is no “correct way” in the first place). Jun Zhe sees his son to be as capable as he, but severely lacks the physical ability, decisiveness and confidence to perform at his full potential. He does not hesitate to bring this up to his son, much to Mu Ying's ire and embarrassment.

Mother -- 陈嘉瑜 Chén Jiā Yù
Jia Yu is a softie, the kind woman has managed to spoil the half of Mu Ying that wasn't beaten into shape by his father. Mu Ying isn't an ingrate however, knowing how his mother had to tolerate all his rubbish in his growing up years (and even till now), he would shower her with presents whenever he can. Needless to say, Mu Ying loves his mother a lot, as does his dad – she would often talk about how blessed she is to be pampered by these two men.

His owl companion -- 雪宁Xüe Níng
It is often said that Mu Ying's owl is what separates the father and son; his partnership with Xue Ning made him suited for the night watch, whereas Jun Zhe and Yong He would operate during the day. (Jia Yu would cheerfully quip that both birds are “鹰”despite their differences) Xue Ning is Mu Ying's closest companion, she has a mild temper and nips at her partner playfully when bored. Mu Ying loves to brag about her and considers her a class above the other birds for her beautiful silent flight, with the exception of eagles because his non-admittance would incite a long, unending debate with his father.

Alliance

Legion --
Mu Ying comes from a family of watchmen, forward scouts and messengers, one that has established a long partnership with their avian counterparts. Information dealing is very much their line of business and hence the close working relationship the family has with the emperor's army. Knowing how powerful a tool information is, the family's allegiance lies with the emperor, trusting that he would be able to put their gathered knowledge into good use and ensure the peace of the nation. Mu Ying himself is skeptical of the noble faction due to their ever-changing goals and politicking, hence he would not trust them with the information the family gathers knowing that it could be twisted and used for their own selfish agenda.

History
Mu Ying was 7 when he was brought to the family's aviary that housed the working birds. Amidst the flurry of feathers - eagle, pigeon, hawk, it was the silent snowy owl that glided down to the boy (and nearly toppled him over). Adhering to family tradition, the partnership between man and bird was thus established and the training as a watch man began; this was in accordance to the area of expertise that best suited the pair.

Mu Ying's father personally tutored his son in developing his observation skills and the proper way to extract information from the scraps of evidence brought back by the birds. With that also came the high standards of discipline imposed on his son; Mu Ying's ability to keep still in wait for prolonged periods of time was a result of harsh and back-breaking training. His timetable was a direct opposite of the other children his age, given how he would train at night (given his partnership with the nocturnal Xue Ning) and return in the morning. His mother pitied the poor boy who would come home in the morning so tired, only to force himself to stay awake so he could play with his friends in the day such that his sleep time was reduced to the 4 hour afternoon nap before the cycle began again. The kind woman would hence tolerate Mu Ying's loud tantrums when he had to be woken and coax the boy who would cry because he missed out playing with his friends on the days he came home and dropped dead tired. In the end, Mu Ying gave up his morning playtime to sleep, taking comfort that Xue Ning would provide him with all the company he needed.

Under the guidance of another senior family member, Mu Ying started his night watch duties when he was around 10. For the boy who had also resented his increasingly solitary lifestyle, this was yet another emotional blow he had to take. From the watch tower, he could see the bloody battles that occurred on those fated nights, and the birds would only deliver harsh, bitter news – how many have died, or that the troops were under ambush. Mu Ying would often ask why they had to fight, to which his mentor would often sigh and say – I don't know. Mu Ying would hence grow up yearning for peace and stability across the land, for it was the silent, beautiful nights where the stars shined bright and that all was calm that he loved the most.

He was 14 when he was allowed his first solo night watch with a mentor watching from afar; the boy who had proven himself competent and astoundingly sharp in his observations henceforth became one of those under night watch rotation. With his mind steeled against the cruel nature of the blood battles and taken in by the job having recognised its importance, Mu Ying established himself as a workaholic who would given a chance, would take on more shifts than anyone to watch over the city. He grew to accept that his lack of friends was an occupational downside, but he never truly gave up interacting with others when he could.

Thanks to the nature of his job, Mu Ying is the farthest thing from an athlete; his father is pretty convinced he's the weakest boy his age. Mu Ying of course denies this accusation fervently, but is aware of the fact that his sedentary lifestyle doesn't help his case. However, he agrees with his father (who was aware his son had been increasing his duties) that he needs to learn some basic combat and how to defend himself given how vulnerable his position as a watch man is, and is hence willing to shorten his sleep time once more to attend the academy.

With tensions rising and war thickening, Mu Ying was stirred to want to take on a more active role in the battle for peace. His father, after all, was the person he looked up to the most. Mu Ying would enter the academy with his own personal agenda – to equip himself and become a forward scout, but one that operated at night.

Tenryujin

It is said that for every Lunarian born, there is a star in the sky tied to
their soul, characterized by a spirit animal that represents them. Upon
achieving a level of mastery in their chosen vocation, the Lunarian is
able to absorb the spiritual energy of the star and regain some of their
ancestral power. Their bodies change immediately when this happens;
fingers become dragon-like claws, their scales cover more of their
bodies. Spikes and even horns can form, as well as a tail. As a Tenryujin,
their powers expand considerably.

[ requirements ]
There is no stage beyond that of the Tenryujin.
