He couldn't do it. Roch finished off another song, looking down at the seeds in his hat. He couldn't do it, and it was ten o'clock at night and the field trip was tomorrow.
He felt like crying. The people milling on the streets paused to listen, but only a few actually paused and tossed some seeds into his hat. Halloween in the human world was coming up. People were busy with their preparations, busy with buying decorations for their parties, if they were staying home.
It was getting darker. The light over the street flickered a few times and even those people wandering the streets at this hour started for home. But stubbornly, Roch started another song.

Amrita, dressed from head to toe in her 'Team Mafia' uniform (pinstripped vest and pants, white long sleeved shirt, Christof's Fedora), rushing towards the maul for some last minute things like a first aid kit. Seriously, who goes on a life threatening field trip without one?! ...Granted, this was the first trip where she even thought to bring one, but whatever. It was silly to not have them, the end.
It was the music that caught her attention and inevitably distracted her, and after wandering towards the sound...well, it didn't take her long to realize who was playing. She studied the situation from a distance at the side. Roch with his guitar, a hat out in front of him. Hmm. What was the hat fo---oh! She understood when she saw a passerby put a silver seed in it, and after a moment's hesitation she wandered over herself.
A couple of silver seeds were dropped into his hat, and then her backward hands were placed on her hips. "Shouldn't you be getting ready for the field tip?"

He looked up, guiltily, then back down at his guitar, finishing off the song. "Yeah, yeah, you're right, I'll just--you know, go now," he said, grabbing the hat. Something about the way he didn't look her in the eye seemed suspicious, though. And that tone of voice?
Something was definitely wrong with the reaper--especially the fact that he was starting off in the wrong direction.

"I...Roch...?" Amrita started, her brow - at least half of it, as her skull was showing clear through, one eye just a gaping hole - furrowing, her head tilting in a rather canine fashion. Something was wrong. Really wrong. But...she couldn't put her finger on it? Hrm...WAIT where was he going?! School was the other way!
"H-hey! Where are you going?" She hopped into action, trailing him instantly at a slight distance. "Roch?"

"I'm going to go back to school! You should, too!" he lied, heading down an alley and grabbing onto the fire escape with a move that seemed far too natural for the boil. He was halfway up the ladder in seconds flat.

Her mouth opened, then closed. Then opened, then closed, making her look an awful lot like the vacant fish she loved so much.
"...Y-you're doing it wrong!" Amrita inisted, the pout on what was left of her lips reflected in her voice. "School's the other way! I...Hey! SCHOOL'S NOT UP THERE!" She yelled, struggling to get on the fire escape with him, climbing at her own pace but trying to keep him in her line of sight.

"Amriiiiitaaaa!" he called down to her. "You forgot half your face! You probably forgot where school is, too!" he teased. But the truth was, he was being a childish brat and he knew it. Jack he hoped she didn't fall!
"You shouldn't be climbing ladders with backwards feet, though! Go back down!" he bellowed over his shoulder. "You could get hurt!"

..
...
....
"I WHAT?!" She cried out, throwing both hands up to grope her face. One side fleshy with stitches, the other boney and...boney; she even got as far as sticking a finger in her eye socket before she realized that, whoops, she wasn't holding onto the ladder. With a shriek she flailed, practically hugging a step to avoid falling off completely.
"I---I didn't not forget it?!" Amrita insisted nervously, though she wasn't sure what she was talking about. It was probably in her pocket, but she didn't want to check. "H-HEY! Hey now, Boil!" The Vetala's tongue clicked against the roof of her mouth in disapproval. "I outran a mother-jackin' DRAGON! Don't tell me I can't climb a stupid la----AH!" Her heel slipped, sending her progress down one step, but thankfully managed to stay on the ladder.

"Amrita!" he yelped, hanging off the ladder by an arm and a foot, reaching for her even though he was too far up to do anything. "Jackdammit, ghoul, you almost gave me a heart attack!" he complained. "Go home already!"
He didn't want to tell her how pathetically he had done in his mission to get the fish. "I'm going to lose you!"

"NO." She insisted stubbornly, struggling to climb up the fire escape regardless of her near fall; her backwards feet actually made it a little easier to climb, since she didn't have to worry about hitting her toes on anything. "You will not! If...If I fall I'll...just...GET BACK UP!" The ghoul was trying to be threatening, but it wasn't working. All the while she climbed after him, until she was right under him and could do nothing more but stare expectantly, her cheek puffed stubbornly.

He looked at her, still hanging off, then swung himself towards the building, then out again before--
...oh jack...
He LEAPT to the emergency staircase on the building next to them, catching and hauling himself up the ladder easily. "Go home, Amrita!" he yelled back before disappearing over the top of the building.

...Did Roch just become a spider monkey? She was pretty sure she just saw him become a spider monkey. As he disappeared, she was staring intensely at the opposide emergency staircase, wiggling and rotating her shoulders to prepare for the crazy she was about to do.
There was a squeaking inhale, a rattle of shaking metal, silence, and then a very belated whine...that didn't stay a whine for long. In fact, she got loud with a cheer, and silenced herself with a little cry; apparently, she slipped.
"NO." She insisted-yelled again, climbing up the ladder slowly, one foot at a time. "I can't go home!"

His head popped over the edge of the building and he looked down at her with worry, that quickly turned into irritation. "Yes you can! Why are you chasing after me, anyway? I'm just a punk! Worse! I'm a REAPER punk!"
Then he disappeared again.

"Um. No, I really can't..." Amrita admitted meekly, panic starting to raise in her voice and her gray eye grew wide once she realized he was getting irritated. Oh...Oh dear. That wasn't what she wanted, at all! "Is your brain rotting? Why wouldn't I---HEY COME BACK! ROCH!" The ghoul demanded with a whine, her climbing getting slower the further from the ground she got, unable to climb up without looking down.
Which was bad, because Amrita happened to be afraid of heights. Lucien had yet to successfully take her flying because of it.
"I don't even know what that means!" She announced, gripping the brick to the building to pull herself onto the roof at a crawl. The term 'punk' was something she never understood, and to make things worse she didn't know what being a Reaper had to do with it. "B-but I'm a body-borrowing, rotting zombie?"

He stood on the roof, backlit by the full pumpkin moon, his guitar held in his hands. For a second he seemed older, somehow, as if she was looking into the future. Then he sat down with a grunt. "I couldn't do it," he muttered almost too quietly. His head hung and his shoulders were slumped. "I tried my jackin' hardest, but I couldn't do it, and tomorrow's the field trip, and I'm out of time."
