As in most islands, or just bodies of land in general, a beach is necessary. The outer rim of Nirvani Island is a beautiful, peaceful beach, the sand is white and soft underfoot. In the sun, the area is thriving of pesky hermit crabs making their way across, the occasional ghost crab squirming out from under the sand to scare a relaxing visitor. At night, however, most locals would agree that it beats the sun tenfold. The sand sparkles like crystal under the moon and the ocean, though threatening in it's shimmering waves scaling high above the ocean, the water itself is a beauty one could only hope for. Simply breathtaking. If one were to travel out along it's shore, enjoying the occasional gull watching for their chance to snack upon the passing crab or waiting for a visiting family to leave their food unattended, basking in the warm rays of the sun (given that one chooses to visit during the warmer times of the year), they may find a cave off under an overhanging cliff. That is, however, a different place.

Why Mao had bothered to sign up for this year..? Ah, he hardly knew. Perhaps it was false hope that he would end up with another beautiful woman such as the Judith he had come across so many years ago during this very festival. Maybe he was fulfilling some abnormal urge to be bought and owned by a woman who may actually take it in the attractive sense of the word – or perhaps he was using it as the only means he had to stay in contact with Zhi where she had to respond to him. But, whatever reason he had, it didn't change the fact he was standing at the beach in wait for a woman by the name of Elliot Park. The name sounded familiar.. But, he couldn't put his finger on where he had heard it. Some part of him wanted to believe Zhi had once told him about her, but, then, it was a small time and chances were just as likely that he had just heard about her from the girl coming in for a check up. He had seen and briefly spoken to about everyone in town that way, after all; it wasn't like anyone was so wary of him that they would avoid going to a regular doctor's appointment! And, if they did, then he wouldn't know about it, would he? He didn't care enough to get his thoughts back onto one train and, instead, the man stayed on the edge of the beach, just before stepping onto the white sand. He didn't want to end up getting sand in his shoes or something.

Neither Alex or River could really understand why Elliot was participating in the White Day festival. Wasn't that a thing for couples? Sure, it wasn't a surefire thing, and Alex had only ever made friends, if that, through White Day, but it was still a strange image, Elliot going on a date, with a man. But to the red haired woman, it wasn't anything that formal. Just an excuse to go on a picnic! ...Unfortunately, it was Winter, not exactly prime picnic weather. But when had Elliot Park ever been the type to care?

The tiny woman grappled with a large wicker picnic basket as she walked along the uneven sand. She forgot how big the beach was, and so she had shown up at the opposite end of the strip before realizing she was way out of the way. And so, clinging to the picnic basket with both arms, she trudged along, in search of her date. The name Mao sounded familiar, but she couldn't place her finger on it... It wasn't until she spotted the man a short distance away, at the edge of the beach, that she remembered. Ah. Zhi's uncle. What an odd coincidence! She adjusted her grip on the basket as she walked up to Mao before greeting him in her usual gentle monotone. "Hello. I'm Elliot. You're Mao, right? Zhi's uncle." A full identification was necessary, especially since they were technically related now. How could she have forgotten?

After some time of eying the snow as it slowly began to gather on the sand, making stepping out onto the beach even more unappealing than usual, Mao finally witnessed some life cross the landscape towards him. He kept his hands tucked into eachother's sleeve in his lengthy, bland coat, unwilling to let them out to feel the cold air that being so close to the sea granted. This was a stupid location for a date and, as soon as the woman who came up to him was close enough, he was determined to inform her of it. But, he was drawn more to the basket she was holding, raising his brows in wonder at the girl. Had he really been bought by such a moronic female? He.. he didn't know if he could say the proper words to express how discontent he felt by the entire situation. He didn't even know if he should.

There's no way Elliot – as she introduced herself – could be so stupid that she would try – oh. His expression shifted from the stunned look he put on to something of more knowing indifference. Elliot was River's sister, which was Zhi's wife. Elliot was also Zhi's friend during her schooldays and, possibly, currently as well. It made perfect sense that Elliot would think to have a picnic on the beach at the coldest time of the year. “Yes. I am.” He answered in his usual drawl as he motioned to her basket, “..What is that? And why are we here? It's certainly a wonderful place, no doubt, but I can't help to wonder what kind of brilliant reason we have to be here.” Nevermind the sarcasm in his voice, Mao was honestly curious.

Elliot's memories of Mao were vague at best. She had heard Zhi mention him many times, but very few of the stories made much of an impression on her -- she did have four sisters, afterall. She knew better than anyone that a girl's opinion of her family changed rapidly and was often times biased. And even though they had both been at the wedding, they hadn't really spoken. So Elliot had no real conception of Mao's personality, and she was quite curious to find out if he was really as unpleasant as he looked. He wasn't, not so far. Elliot sometimes had a hard time reading faces, because she usually maintained such a blank exterior. She had gotten better at that over the years, but tone was still a challenge. And so she had failed to notice anything but neutrality in Mao's reply. As far as she could tell so far, he was just a scary-looking guy.

"...It's a picnic basket," Elliot replied simply, holding the basket up for him to see clearly. How could someone not know what a picnic basket is? "My sister said that picnics are nice. It's not yet picnic season, but I thought it would be nice anyway." She glanced at the beach around them. It was chilly, yes, but the view was nice. She was nice and bundled up, so she had no problem putting up with the cold for a little while longer, to enjoy a pretty day at the beach. Ah, but this wasn't just about her, was it? She had to remember not to be so selfish! "...Is it a problem? If it's a problem, that's understandable. Ahh, maybe she shouldn't have listened to River's suggestion afterall...

The first thing that Mao noted as he looked at Elliot with his usual, dreary look was that the girl hadn't changed even the slightest in expression. In fact, she seemed as though she hadn't heard him. Was she deaf? ..He almost hoped she was deaf; he had quite a few cures he wanted to attempt if she was~! And a deaf girl would certainly be easy to convince – it wasn't like anyone would care what she said! Well, not anyone he cared about, in any case. He was about to check her hearing with a few claps when she spoke and he had to feel the bitter sting of disappointment as he realized that she wasn't deaf at all. She just.. didn't care. This was an odd moment for Mao for, after dealing with people for so long, he had been hardpressed to find someone who had such a practiced steel-expression as he. He never thought there would be someone like that living on the island as long as he had been. He raised a brow slowly, curiosity in his eyes as he unhurriedly replied to her, “Your sister?” ..If she was referring to Zhi's wife, then he could understand why she had come to such a stupid idea. Though, why she had stuck with it.. “Of course not. I'm sure everyone in their right mind wouldn't miss the chance to spend a time picnicking in beautiful weather like this.” Thinking or not, sarcasm simply came natural to Mao and, thus, he said it absentmindedly as he focused his thoughts on the curiosity in this situation.

Again, Elliot's personality -- or whatever condition she possessed that would affect her demeanor like this -- made it hard for her to recognize a number of things. Sarcasm was one of those things. So while Mao's words dripped with sarcasm, she failed to interpret as anything else than honesty. She was actually quite pleased that he had no problem with picnicking out here. "Oh, good, I'm glad," she replied with a pleased nod of her head. Placing the picnic basket down on the ground, she opened it and pulled a blanket. "Just a moment, please," she nodded once more and then proceeded to spread out the blanket on the sand. Unfortunately, there was a bit of a breeze, so the blanket refused to lay flat on the ground. The edges and corners folded in, and after clumsily trying to get everything to stay straight, Elliot eventually gave up and sat down on the messy blanket, dragging the picnic basket towards herself. "Please, take a seat. Do you like turkey?" she asked, opening up the picnic basket again and pulling out some bread and a spread of lunch meats. It wasn't fancy, but even something simple could be nice with the right company. And this Mao man didn't seem like a bad guy.
