http://www2.wspa.com/news/2011/oct/15/7/apartment-fire-duncan-area-ar-2560947/This building is right behind mine. We were on our way home at the time and saw the smoke from the interstate, then watched the fire spread from the highway. The complex is cordoned off - I was lucky to get out of the parking lot to make it to work. But as it says in the article, 30 apartments were destroyed. There was at least one person taken away on a stretcher, but it was before the news crews arrived.
*sighs* Keep these people in your thoughts, please. It was a very close call for me and my roommates today, and my roommates are essentially all the family I have here. But there are still others who did suffer loss today, who were suddenly and violently set adrift from their security.
[EDIT] I found out a little more. Reportedly, ten people have been admitted to the hospital, including one who was lifted by chopper. The woman who was airlifted had been asleep when the fire started, and her dog woke her up because of the smoke. Unfortunately, she has epilepsy, and the flashing lights and noise from the fire alarms caused her to have a seizure.
[EDIT 2] Crews are still on-scene, making sure to hose down any spots that flare up. According to another resident, only six apartments out of those two buildings are undamaged. But there are still 30 homes that have been destroyed, one of them belonging to a woman who moved all the way out here from California within the past month.
[EDIT 3] The cause still hasn't been definitely determined. Some think it was because of someone grilling on their patio. Grills aren't allowed within 25 feet of the buildings for that reason. There are others, though, who believe it might've been arson, owing to the fact that the majority of residents in that building were either of a different race or from another country (including a couple from Poland).
