It's always either a whiny high school student who crushes on the most popular guy/girl in school, or an adult kick-a** secret agent. Why are they always secret agents or cops? Can't we have medics or firefighters that fight?
Actually, I've already seen that in the Japanese live action show Tomica Hero Rescue Force lol. Only they're in robot suits, sorta like Power Rangers only better.
So. Why does it always have to be the popular kid? Can't it be the kid who sits in the back of the class, or a close friend, or someone the MC meets on the streets?
Or online, although I don't believe in online relationships. Although that's in "You and I," the t.A.T.u. movie. Never saw it cuz it's not in English, but it was about two girls that meet online and fall in love and get to know each other at a t.A.T.u. concert.
Why is the crush the ONLY thing that revolves around the MC's life? Then gaians have to tell me "it's realistic." Screw realism! Why can't I just write a thing with no love in it, or subtext love?
Oh, so I'm unrealistic for not falling in love and not being into dating yet? Any crush I DO get only lasts for a week. I think that's realistic, too. There are plenty of people that don't date til they're older.

They have main characters like that. It just that the ones you refer to aren't as popular as mainstream character development. If you look hard enough you can find the hidden gems you seek.

Stories usually have the love ingredient so they appeal to more people, I mean, love or crushes are something almost everyone is familiar and can identify with. There are plenty of plots that don't revolve around the main character's love interest but do have a hint of romance to them.
Personally I think anti-romantic relationships work best because they keep you on edge and fuel your interest. If you don't like romance then it's your own personal opinion.
Overused subjects also include: sadness, loneliness, anger, revenge, bravery
Try writing a story without an of these and you'll see how bland it comes out to be.
