Basic Types of Characters

Leader Guy (LG):
This is the character that is usually cold in nature, always has the plan, and puts the mission over everything else. More often then not this character dies so the main character can assume this position. This character also will make more drastic decisions that will be unpopular with the more humanitarian characters in the group.

Dark Mysterious Moron (DMM):
This character is often the most abused stereotype in the RP realm. Everyone tries to pull off this stereotype and 99.9% of the time they suck at it. This character gives off the ‘to cool for school’ attitude and tries to act as if they’re on top of situations when in reality they aren’t. Examples for this kind of character are Vincent from FF7, Sasuke from Naruto, and pretty much many other eastern writings. Do yourself a favor now and avoid trying this stereotype because it was meant for the sake of writing, not RPing. Oh, and before you post a comment about how you or a friend are good at this stereotype, no you aren’t and neither are they and the fact you wanted to say that means you should really pay attention to this guide.

Big Lovable Guy (BLG)
Big Lovable Guy is an often role that many don’t try out, I personally love this role. Now, BLG is often very strong physically, big heart, very humanitarian, but this character isn’t very smart. Usually this character acts as a supporting piece in fights or as the more main battery of defense or offense. This character can also be looked to as the character people learn the simple joys of life from due to their simple thoughts and way of thinking. This character usually fights to protect the people they care about or because they don’t know any better.

Generic Female Character (GFC)
Alright, this one you can’t deny seeing because it is the one that is probably abused the most. This character is pretty frail and relies on their friends, insert BLG here, to pretty much protect them and fight the battles while they tend to wounds and/or fix things. That or they CAN fight and they just leave it to the men anyway and then they eventually end up falling for one of the male characters, Insert DMM here, while pretty much just existing to bring drama into the story, sounds sexist but it’s true.

Tomboy Soldier b***h (TSB)
Tomboy soldier b***h is the counterpart to GFC in which the character now has short spiky hair, wears a tank top with baggy jeans, carries a large gun like the men in the group, and probably is covered in sweat and dirt most of the time and constantly asserts herself to prove she’s just as good as the men in the group and most of the time they either die, or they find enough heart in them to brutally make out with one of the male roles, insert LG here.

Generic Hero Character (GHC)
The. Most. Abused. Character. Stereotype. This character role is abused due to the fact that everybody wants to be the dude that saves the damn world. This character usually has mommy and daddy issues, they were killed when demons butt ******** the village, and usually have a naïve personality or they are dark and scarred and all that other crap, insert Cloud Strife knock off here, when really they are just being a little b***h about it. That and this character will always be the eventual powerhouse of the group, which makes RPs a giant ******** up when everyone is going for this role.

The Black Guy (TBG)
Usually the badass who kills lots of things. Makes the memorable one liners. Then eventually dies.

Character Creation

Now, onwards to building a character frame for the players that will be generated in your RP. It’s your job to tell the prospective players what you want for their RP representations, whether they’ll have weapons or skills or special powers or not is up to you. This is largely affected by the genre and setting of the RP. There are, however a few key things that you should always have in a profile skeleton.

Name – this one is self explanatory, as all living things need a name. Try avoid, however, the use of names that stem from your own screen name, as that creates unnecessary sentimental ties to that character. You know what they say: Variety is the spice of life. Also avoid using names that don't match you characters appearance and/or background (ie. A Japanese name for a kid with no ties to Japan)

Appearance – The part the usually contains a visual description of what an RP character looks like. It might contain parts about armour and weapons and accessories used in combat. Some creators would be fine with just putting in a picture for this part. But for some reason, I have a seething hate for those kinds of people. Also for those who only write down the basics, (i.e. A black coat, with long silver hair and a katana on his back), I demand description and detail! For description breeds training, training builds experience, experience builds maturity, and maturity builds literacy! DO not join the dark side!

Age – Something just to measure how old a person is. Really, some creators don’t even put this in here, and instead, start to put it alongside with appearance. Very self-explanatory, really.

Biography/History/Background – Again, like appearance, no one-liners. Remember the chain I stated above. A longer bio would give more insight as to why a certain character would act that way, but treat it like a storyline, do not include any extraneous instances in your biographies. Too long of a biography and the person reading it would cringe. Please don’t make anyone’s eyes bleed. Thank you.

Personality – You might or might not have this part in your profile skeleton. This part itself is self-explanatory. There are very few things available to describe what this part encompasses, but in essence this part is how a certain character will act and react to certain situations, and how that same character will speak and what type of emotions they might commonly show. Some experienced RP creators choose to forego this part as they see Personality as something to be developed and discovered during the duration of the RP.

Weapons/Skills/Spells – This part is entirely up to what you need in the roleplay itself. Just remember that people tend to go off on a tangent in this part and start to create multitudes of spells/skills, or even ‘supersize’ (god-mod) their weapons, armor, skills and spells. Regulate this part according to what you want and according to what the RP needs.

Remember that this list isn’t final and you may add or take out sections to the profile skeleton depending on what your RP needs, or what you want.
And that’s basically the composition of a very bare-bones RP. Now all you need are a few players, and you’ll be good to go. Okay? Good luck!

Character Examples

A bare bones character skeleton filled out in both a warning and an inspiration.

A bad example

Quote:
Name: Tsuki Utami
Age: 16
Race: Catgirl
Bio: Holy Jesus’ balls! My family was killed when demons raided my village and my magic level wasn’t high enough to stop them so it’s all my fault!
Appearance: http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o167/Viral_C/CatGirl.jpg
Personality: Cheerful, very outgoing, humanitarian to a fault, tries to save all the little babies in the world.

A good example

Quote:
Character name: Jennifer Flemings
Age: 30
Personality: Jennifer is a polite and well spoken woman, which can be deceptive as in combat she is as ruthless as a crocodile going for a kill. Being a generally fair person with a strictness to her classes she doesn’t like to see sparring matches spiral out of control, though going too far may end up with you being ‘tested’ in how much you’ve learned. Against her personally.
History: Jennifer grew up in the outskirts of a quiet town, not much happened and not much entertained her apart from growing plants. She spent most of her adolescent life exploring the world, collecting seeds to cultivate for her garden, and eventually found out about her power. Her house was the target of a vicious robbery, from which her garden saved her by incapacitating the criminals. Most of it was a blur, but since then she has trained in various methods to protect herself and others from unsavoury acts using her powers.
She was then picked up to work in the school for her personality and skills.
Appearance: XXX – Minus the pointed ears and add in some knee height combat boots and a tattered old military trench coat which she always leaves open.
