Vincent, like the amazing father he was, was going to make sure his son's first Halloween was going to be a memorable one. Yeah, he might have forgotten he was supposed to take his son trick-or-treating earlier, and the kid might have been wandering around by himself all this time, but he was there now, and that's what counted, right? Of course. He'd already located his son trick-or-treating on one street, and was hiding in the bushes at the other end of the street, his face concealed by a ski mask and a rubber knife in his hand.
What would Halloween be without scaring? Navidad would appreciate the good show of Halloween spirit; Vincent was sure of it. Then again, he also had no idea what kind of Halloween his son had been having, and he wasn't taking into account that his son was a freaking deer. Grade A father material right there.

Navidad was still reeling from the rock to the head. He wasn't moving too straight, and he was sort of dizzy. But he'd managed to pull the sack back over his shoulder, and head toward the next house, weaving back and forth in the air. He didn't feel good. All weird in his stomach, and his eyes refused to focus for a while before finally behaving. Where was his dad? He really, really wanted a hug right now. He started to cry, big, salty tears trickling down his cheeks as he wandered the street, watching other kids having the time of their young lives, and wishing, wishing SO hard that his father would do that with him - laugh with him and make friends with him, and... be a dad. Because he loved Vincent so very, very much... he just didn't know if his dad loved him back.

And that's when Vincent, who hadn't been able to get a good look at his son and couldn't see he was crying, decided to come popping out of the bushes in rush of motion, rubber knife waving. "GOTCHA!" he yelled, grinning behind the mask as he tried not to laugh. And then he froze mid-knife-wave as he noticed the tears streaming down the little deer's face. Oh damn. The knife was was dropped and the mask pulled back to reveal his face as he stepped closer to the child. "Navidad, what's wrong?"

Too late for that. Navi had seen a knife and a mask, and all his deerish mind could think of was... Run. It startled him so bad, he even lost his power of flight temporarily, and he was GONE. His four little legs flying as he pounding the pavement, hightailing it gods only knew where. When he finally stopped, he froze, legs stiff, and little heart pounding hard enough to hurt, breaths catching in his throat.
He was in a graveyard.
So he did the only thing a child his age would do in this situation. Screamed. Loudly, enough to wake the dead, if there were any zombies about. Screamed, cried, and curled up into a little fetal ball, curling his legs under him right where he was, and shaking hard.

Vincent cursed under his breath, feet pounding the pavement as he took off after the child. But, as it were, he was never much of a runner. And damn, that kid was fast. He soon lost sight of the child among the streets and houses. Oh gods, Alex was going to kill him when she found out. He was dead. Deader than dead. Dammit all. He was now jogging through the neighborhood, trying to find his son.
And then the scream hit his ears. The jog didn't just return to a run; it was now a full-blown sprint as he ran towards the sound, finding his son crumpled into a heap in the graveyard, of all place. "Shh, shh, um....it's alright." The last part was almost, but not quite, a question as he knelt down, drawing Navidad into a hug.

The shaking form in Vincent's arms responded to the touch by curling into it, putting his entire self into the man's hands, and pressing his head against him. It was fall, so he'd lost his antlers for the year, and would grow back new ones the next. He wouldn't have been able to 'cuddle' like this otherwise.
His entire shaking frame couldn't stop. And he couldn't stop crying. Collapsed there with his legs under him, being held by the ONE man he wanted to see. The tears that came were equal parts relief and fear.

Vincent felt horrible. Yes, he'd meant to scare the kid, but he didn't meant to make him break down like this! He hugged his son, patting him in an attempt to comfort him. He wanted to do more, but to be honest, he didn't know what to do. Crying people had never been his forte. Well, he should probably apologize. After all, he'd just scared the daylights out of the poor kid, and probably made whatever was wrong to begin with even worse.
"Sorry for scarin' ya, kid." he said, his tone holding a hint of an awkward laugh. "Didn't think you'd go running off like that." Okay, so it wasn't the best apology on the planet. Hey, at least he was trying.

Navi nuzzled into his father, and rested his head there, the crying slowly coming to an end as he realized that his dad was THERE now. And that's what he wanted the most. Once his tears dried a bit, he looked up at his father with those big eyes, and said simply: "I love you, daddy." before launching into what had gone on in the past couple of hours.

Vincent hugged the little fella, glad to see that his crying was coming to an end. And then he heard the reason for his son's tears. "That...oh gods, kid, I had no idea. Here I was thinking you were having a grand old time of things....well, tell you what. I'm here now, so no one is going to mess with you. And if no one wants to give you candy, well screw them. I'll go buy us some candy to divvy up; how's that sound?" Candy made everything better, especially on Halloween.

Navi unfolded his front legs, and tried to stand up a bit. He was wobbly still, but that's because he'd quite forgotten to use his flight to help him. And was still forgetting. He headbutted his father very lightly, and nodded at the suggestion.
"Umm... can... can we go back? I like trick-or-treating... I just.. don't like rocks and bones and stuff thrown at me..." He sniffled again. "And my head hurts..."

"Of course we can go back." Vincent said, smiling as he put a hand on the boy's shoulder to steady him. "We'll take a look at your head when we get home, how does that sound? And don't worry; you won't get anything else thrown at you while I'm here. Promise."
"Now, let's get out of here. Boneyards give me the creeps." And with that, he began walking towards the exit, making sure Navi could keep up.

Since the little deer was walking instead of flying, he did have a bit of a time keeping up, but he managed a good enough pace not to get separated from Vincent again. He was, however, yawning a bit, and maybe just a tidbit slow on his hooves. Then again, he'd just spent most of the night being abused by random objects and people. It was bound to tucker him out. Deer or not, he WAS still just a child.

Noticing the boy's slower pace, Vincent slowed his own. Poor kid seemed exhausted, but could anyone really blame him? The man glanced back, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "Um...well, if you're tired and all, I can carry you a bit. Your legs probably need a rest." he offered, albeit awkwardly. That's what a parent did, right? Kids get tired, you carry em.

Navidad gladly accepted the ride, folding his legs over his father's arms, and using a small bit of his powers to make himself much lighter to carry. He did actually enjoy being carted around this way on occasion. It made him feel special. And he was sure his dad didn't mind doing it.
Plus, he WAS tired. But he wanted to stay up and trick-or-treat, and maybe get some candy...

Vincent, once he was sure he had a good hold of the boy and wasn't going to drop him, headed back towards the neighborhood. It still took some getting used to, carrying someone and all, but he was managing. "Let's go see about some free candy, okay kid?" he said, grinning down at the little deer as he made a beeline for the next house.
If they knew what was good for them, they better have some damn candy.
