With all the effort everyone had put into cleaning up Leo, Jett had less and less excuse to visit the outpost. When there had been debris and artifacts mixed together, Jett could have enjoyed poking around, but it felt like he’d seen everything there was to see. Figuring he’d been away for a while, it seemed like a fair enough idea to see if while he was gone anyone had found anything neat.

Jett was missing the aged feel of the antique works shop he’d been working in for the past few years, and Leo was as close as he was going to get—and, if he was lucky, he could bother someone in the kitchen and see if he could flash a nice enough smile to get someone to make him something.

…But it would serve him right to actually have to cook for himself; he’d gotten a bit spoiled with people always being in the kitchen willing to help out. A part of him was hoping that someone from his group would be there so he didn’t have to eat alone, but then there was also the problem of having to explain just how he’d disappeared earlier—and that sounded more grim than having a meal alone.

His hands were in his pockets as he sauntered into the kitchen, half heartedly dreaming about his mother’s cooking and how much he wanted to be home; he wasn’t a chef by any means, so if he couldn’t luck out by swiping someone else’s meal he’d have to actually make something for himself—and the thought was absolutely mortifying.

The everyone that Jett was probably referring to definitely didn't count in Roxanne Selte. Well, unless one counted cleaning out most of the drawers in her hunt for awesome things to wear and just to collect. That could count perhaps, there wasn't as much dust in some areas thanks to her wandering and searching. But no, the blonde had put very little effort into cleaning up the outpost like all the other lemmings, only really carrying that her and her crew were well taken care of like a true pirate should.

She was currently in the kitchen, when Jett sauntered in reminiscing about his mother's food. It was just another example of what most of the others would probably consider more selfish behavior, making food for herself and not thinking of others in her endeavor. Well, she would probably make something for the others if she knew what she was doing.

Roxy was staring at the back label, reading the directions to how to prepare bacon. There was elation to realize someone had even brought over her most favorite food, but like Jett, she was in no means a cook and was currently missing the one friend she knew who would be able to whip this out in no time.

How hard could it even be? She could look at a picture of an outfit and be able to figure out the means to assemble it but she couldn't cook bacon? Roxy was ashamed at herself, frowning at the plastic label. "Oil...." Obviously she was too preoccupied to notice the other blonde enter the room.

Both pleased and disappointed to find someone in the kitchen, Jett took a moment to assess the girl. On one hand, she looked like she was about to make something—so he was considering how he could convince her to put in enough effort to make double whatever she was preparing. On the other hand, she didn’t look like she was very good at making something, and Jett certainly didn’t want to wind up with food poison or mad cow disease (or whatever you got from eaten poorly prepared food).

His mind weighed the two options and he decided, reluctantly, that he would fish around in the kitchen and see if there was something that looked good just lying around for him. There was certainly enough junk food for him to eat his fill, but the concept of warm food? That was something he very much craved.

Having no issues prying, he addressed the girl at the stove, “You’re taking a long time over there. You having a hard time with that or something?” He considered getting closer to see what she was making but didn’t want her to hear his stomach growling. Keeping his distance, he poked around, trying to find something that looked good. He’d have killed for a toaster or microwave so he could just throw some things together—actually making something sounded so difficult.

Roxy heard him move about in the kitchen before she actually heard him speak to her. Her yellow eyes shifted from the writing to meet his gaze, involuntarily looking him up and down to get a first impression of the male.

She didn't get much, not that there was something lacking from Jett but because she wasn't that good at reading people from just their looks. He looked just as out of place in a kitchen as she was, however. Roxy was just as much a swindler of food as she was - but she was tired of sandwiches, chips and those microwaveable burritos when they didn't even have a microwave.

"I don't cook very often," she explained in a hoity-toity tone since well, she didn't cook at all unless you counted toast in the morning, "and I want to make sure I get this right. Ruining bacon would be a travesty." Roxy gave the boy another look, her eyes narrowed in wonder. "Do you know how to cook this stuff?"

Ah, hell. She didn’t know how to cook. “What’s the problem?” he asked reluctantly as he moved closer to her; he had come here to try and convince someone to cook for him not share cooking knowledge. Jett was taller than the girl and had no trouble peering over her shoulder to see what she was doing when he stood a little over two feet behind her. Bacon sounded so good. “I thought you just…”

His voice trailed off and he tried to recall the last time he’d had bacon; he hadn’t made it, but his mother had. Clinging to the memory and trying to remember if there had been any specific procedure, he shrugged, staring at the stove as if it had all the answers. “I thought you just threw it on the pan and left it there. I don’t know, are you supposed to put butter in with it or something?”

Butter went on everything, Jett knew that much about cooking.

Roxy hummed thoughtfully, not phased as he peered over her shoulder and offered some help. Suggestions were welcome, even though she wasn't quite sure it was the right one.

"Is it butter? I thought it was like oil or something," She replied, tapping her chin as she turned the package over again. It wasn't giving her any indication of what to add, "I remember it always gets greasy, so I thought you added something to it to help cook it." Man, Roxy really wished she had youtube, youtube always helped her with any questions she ever had; craft projects, math, finding music.

Even google would be handy.

Or maybe the lack of information was trying enough to get this fired up. Hesitantly, the blonde turned the nod of the stove to medium, unsure of which temperature to really work with. The middle seemed the best bet and the fire lit up, ablaze under the pan she had set up when she started this ... and got confused. Peeling back the plastic that held the precious food, Roxy simple hazardously piled strips of the bacon into the pan.

"Did you want some?" She asked, curious. Though, the better question was if Roxy really wanted to share her food. But, if he was there, "if you want some, you're going to have to help with this... maybe we could make BLTs or something." This was more of a verbal suggestion to go get the sandwich making parts.

Well, yes, yes he did. Jett didn’t think he could handle being anywhere near the kitchen and smell bacon cooking without wanting some—no matter if it was properly cooked or not. “If you’re making some, sure.”

He could take a hint, of course, and stepped away from the girl to go see if he couldn’t find the other ingredients. The bread was easy enough to find—there were a few loaves on the counter. The collection of fruits and vegetables were easy enough to sift through; he found a healthy looking tomato after a few seconds, rinsed it, and then set about slicing it.

He wasn’t the best at cooking, sure, but he’d helped his mother enough in the kitchen to be comfortable slicing things. Rather than thinking of the girl by the stove as ‘Bacon girl’, he decided to make some conversation. “So,” he said, glancing up at her as he worked on making even slices in the tomato, “I’ve seen you around some.” Even if he’d never spoken with her or had any direct contact, he’d been around enough to recognize most of the people he’d seen at the outposts. “But I don’t actually have any idea who you are. I’m Jett,” he introduced, still focused mostly on slicing the tomatoes.

It didn't come as a surprise that Jett was going to express his interest in the food she was cooking. Or at least, attempting to cook. The bacon in the pan began to pop and sizzle in the pan, there were bubbles and grease oozing from the strips as they marinated in their own juice. Roxy stared at the bacon, eyeing it carefully and prodding it every so often with a spatula she had found. So, that's where the grease came from...

"Well, there aren't very many of us around." She replied cooly with a smile. "We're spread around decently enough, though yeah... we'll all run into one another at some point or another." There were still others she hadn't seen since the day they had come to this place, and really about the same that she didn't know by name; the ones that were in comas or had been attacked were really a mystery to her. There were tidbits she knew from listening in, but not as much as she liked.

"You can call me Yellow," Roxy again offered a smile as she turned her attention to the blond as he worked on slicing the fruit. "It's nice to meet you Jett."

"Are you staying at this outpost or are you visiting this fine kitchen from another?"

“Yellow?” Jett verbalized, just to clarify that he had her name correct. Immediately he suspected it was some sort of nickname since he couldn’t really fathom any sane parents naming their child after a color, though he wasn’t going to bring it up. He shook his head; it was an easy enough name to remember.

“I haven’t really settled on places to stay. Kind of been poking around a lot. I used to be in Aquarius, but it got attacked a while back and I ended up in Virgo for a while. Kind of been spending a lot of time there. But I like Leo. I’ve been thinking about switching over here at some point. Can’t think of any reason not to.”

From what he’d heard, Leo hadn’t been attacked, and the close proximity of the kitchens meant that he didn’t have to worry about food or walking around the Surrounding to have full access to the largest of the kitchens. Not to mention the artifacts lying around.

Those fascinated Jett the most; he’d have gladly spent hours just admiring them, looking at their craftsmanship, taking in the small details. It might not be the same as appraising at home, but it had brought him a bit of nostalgia all the same.

“What about you, are you staying at Leo or did you just migrate here for a meal, too?” he asked; the aroma of bacon was simply tantalizing. He had a small pile of sliced tomatoes and wasn’t shy about helping himself to a piece of such as he continued to slice more.

"Yes," Roxy replied not even looking up at the other blonde as he asked her about the color name in doubt. "Yellow." At least he wasn't bringing up his suspicions out loud, the girl was never in the mood to have to explain the code name. Well, hopefully he wouldn't after her confirmation.

Or well, there was steering him away from it. "I haven't been to that outpost yet, how is Aquarius?" Truthfully she could imagine water and seashells and cups given the name sake, but given how much of the various other Outposts she had explored, many of them weren't as stereotypical as she would have imagined. There were lions in Leo for sure, but the Baroque look was not what she was expecting. Virgo probably was the most fitting really.

"Me and my crew found ourselves a spot here," she told Jett as she began to move a few of the pieces of bacon on a plate. They had begun to curl and, well, look like bacon which was a little indicator to her that they were done. Roxy really had no idea what to do with them after that, so she let them sit while she kept scraping them off the pan.

"I really think the whole place is gorgeous, minus all the broken things and the rubble. The clothing is really up my alley too." Roxy grinned. The last piece was off and they were still sizzling on the plate. Hm.

Hm.

"The rest of the sandwiches ready?" Might as well eat them, right?

“Mostly, yeah. Lettuce there, bread there. Tomatoes are cut,” he gestured. He glanced over his shoulder at her to see the condition of the bacon. It wasn’t on fire, and at this point? That was totally good enough for him. Moving aside, he set down two plates—not that he felt they needed him, but he figured it was a nice gesture all the same.

“Leo’s interesting enough,” he said with a shrug; he figured since she’d cooked the bacon he’d let her have first dibs on everything. He was hungry, but not in a rush enough to make a fool of himself. “Aquarius, I don’t know. Not so hot, in my book. I guess it’s neat enough. Messy. Books that you can’t even read lying all over the place.”

Jett was leaning against the counter; he wasn’t about to blurt out about how there was a very obvious threat in the form of giant salamanders, however he felt this to be unnecessary drama since it seemed to have been a single closed event. “It’s pretty calm there, for the most part.”

Not really making an effort to hide the fact that he was watching the girl’s movements as she finished with the bacon, he was compelled to dig a little deeper than, ‘Hey, what’s your name,’ and ‘where are you staying’. “So, are you settling in all right or is this whole thing still leaving you shaken up and out of it?”

Some people were coping well. Some people were coping horribly. He was somewhere in the middle; not really devastated by everything, but not really doing as well as he felt he ought to have. Looking at the girl, he'd have assumed she was taking all of this pretty well and, even if appearances were deceiving, at least she was functioning in a normal matter.

Content with Jett's work, Roxy pulled one of the plates he had pulled down a little closer to her to take her share of bacon before handing him the rest - there seemed to be an equal amount, though a few of hers were bigger.

"Books?" She found herself repeating like a parrot, "books could be interesting," given the right kinds. Books held information, information was always terribly useful. And if there were books, perhaps there were maps that could finally dispel that nagging feeling of displacement that she had in the back of her mind.

"It's been pretty calm here too," Roxy told her companion as she reached over to grab a few of the items he had collected for their sandwiches, trying not to be rude and reaching over and all. "Though, I've been kind of turning a blind eye to the news from the other places, I know things have been happening but... well, sometimes ignorance is bliss." Monsters weren't something she wanted to know about, juicy secrets were.

"It's been my main choice of thinking, I think," she went onto explain, "I don't know if its from shock or just plain shut down." Roxy was now piling a everything onto one slice of the bread. "Just found myself going with the flow." Probably taking a page from Green really, he just seemed like he found the right way to deal with all of this.

Roxy placed the second slice of bread ontop of her masterpiece, brought her hand over it and smashed it all down.

While Roxy worked, Jett had been quick to do the same; he was hungrier than he was willing to admit, so wasn’t going to pick a bone about who got the biggest slices of bacon; he’d been lucky to snag even that much from her, so pretty much anything he got out of this meeting was win-win. If that meant he had to stack a few extra layers of lettuce and tomato to fill himself up, it was a price he was more than willing to pay.

His eyes had drifted to Roxy’s sandwich when she smashed it down, and there was an obvious look of amusement on his face. He didn’t do anything to decrease the width of his sandwich as he completed it with the second piece of bread, just brushed his fingers over the top of it as if to remove a few stray crumbs disrupting its perfect image.

“Be careful with going with the flow too much. Apparently that gets you in trouble,” he noted. “…Might benefit to be a little more on top of things. Turning a blind eye to all the s**t that’s happening is a good way to be entirely unprepared. It’ll come back to bite you in the a**,” he all but guaranteed; there was no real foundation for his theories, though it seemed that every time trouble hit, it was because he was uneducated on the possibility of trouble on the horizon. The lack of preparedness had certainly bitten him in the a**.

He raised the sandwich to his mouth and took a rather sizable bite out of the meal, uncaring to wait for formalities. His stomach was all but roaring, anyway. Coming from a girl who didn’t know how to cook bacon, the sandwich was probably the best BLT he could ever remember having.
