Paris was well and truly tired.

Between work, dance, patrolling, and volunteering at the Surrounding and trying to manage the plethora of happenings that occurred there, exhaustion was beginning to take its toll, and he was beginning to wonder how long things would continue on this way. He could only be thankful that work tended to be slow and he could take the opportunity to rest behind the checkout counter, otherwise he was sure he would have collapsed by now, and with the time he would need to spend at the dance studio soon increasing, he was going to have to do some major rescheduling, or sacrifice a couple of things along the way.

As work and dance had to stay, it wouldn’t be a difficult choice to make, though perhaps a callous and selfish one.

Lucky for him—and those whose lives would be affected by the nighttime activities that had come to replace his forays into clubs and bars—Paris had a plan. He’d already scheduled his father in to work the couple afternoons he thought he could handle, plus the Saturdays he’d already been taking. All that was left was to find someone to take the remaining afternoons, and Paris knew just the person to call in a favor from.

Chris had started up school again before they’d broken up, and so Paris still had his class schedule memorized. What he didn’t know was what building and exact classroom he was in, but after a quick search through the DCU website, he was at least able to discover what classes were typically held in which building, and so he stood outside the structure he expected Chris to soon be coming out of, holding a cup of coffee from a nearby café and a boxed sandwich as a peace offering, scanning the crowd of departing students in search of his ex-boyfriend.

He almost feared he’d missed him, or else that Chris had chosen to exit the building through a different door, but he soon caught sight of a familiar sweater-vested figure with dark auburn hair, and he smiled to himself in success as he shouted to him.

“Hey, Christopher! Over here!”

The week had been long, what with school and knight business, but he couldn't let it get to him. He was determined to keep his GPA up as high as he possibly could, not only so he could keep his scholarship, but so he could graduate with honors. It might prove to be a bit more difficult than he'd first thought, but when he'd first entered college, he didn't have to worry about being a superhero of sorts.

He was leaving one of his drafting classes when he looked up to see none other than Paris standing and waiting for him. Chris stared in surprise, not sure of whether he was seeing things or if his ex was really standing there with what looked like coffee and sandwiches.

Not that he had much time to think about it. He was blocking the pathway and got a few unappreciative comments from other students trying to get out of the building. "Sorry," he mumbled, quickly sidestepping out of their way, although he hesitated before heading over to where Paris was standing.

"'Christopher'...?" he wondered out loud, brows furrowed in bemusement. "Since when have you ever called me by my full name?" It was strange... he wasn't sure if he liked it. Sure, he'd gone by Christopher in high school, but since entering college, he was introducing himself more and more as... just Chris.

"Um... what's up?" he asked after a moment, making sure they weren't standing in the way. "How did you find me?" Because... that was kind of stalkerish...

"Since I found out that's what 'Chris' is short for. I've called you that before. Jeez, Chris, keep up," Paris replied in jest. He might have snapped his fingers as if to get his attention if his hands weren't currently full.

Which was a problem he was about to resolve. He held out the coffee and the boxed sandwich once Chris approached him. "Here. I got these for you. I know you usually eat in the cafeteria or one of the fast food places near campus, but that food's probably crap so I picked up something on the way. Careful, the coffee's still hot, and the sandwich is smoked ham with cheddar and sliced apples on sourdough. It's good."

He marveled at how easy it was to fall back into the old routine, and even how comfortable it was for him to do so, but then he reminded himself he was used to taking care of his father and making sure that he ate properly. Doing the same for Chris had never been much different, except that he hadn't had to worry about slurred responses or smart a** jibes.

"I needed to talk to you about something. Don't worry, it's not anything about us," he reassured him, just so he wouldn't think he was about to drag him into another conversation like the one they'd had before. "Let's find somewhere to sit so you can eat. You have another class in an hour, don't you?"

He tried not to let himself feel uncomfortable. He was purposefully not thinking about any of their previous encounters since the break up -- neither as civilians nor transformed -- and instead focused on such things as Chris's hair, which could probably do with a cut, and the fact that he was so damned tall, which only made Paris feel markedly shorter than usual, especially since the gold shoes he'd paired with his tight white skinny jeans and navy and white striped shirt didn't have a very high heel at all.

He stared at Paris, not really sure what to think, what to say or do. Here Paris was, smiling at him as though there was nothing in the world to worry about, when they both knew there was so much to stress over. Even with the reassurance that his seeking him out had nothing to do with the two of them just... was strange to him.

"You don't have to take care of me like this," he said, but shifted the strap of his backpack and the drafting tube he had with him on his shoulder, reaching out to take the coffee from his ex, and then the sandwiches. His heart hurt, but he didn't know whether he was upset or angry. And not knowing how he felt made his temper flare, but he was doing his best to keep it at bay. At least long enough for Paris to explain why he was there and stalking him.

And what the hell was he wearing, anyway? Did he really enjoy looking like a girl all the time? Or maybe he was on his way to trick someone else? Chris pulled his eyes back up from Paris's legs and focused on a spot in the distance behind him.

"Yeah," he confirmed about his class in an hour, although his brows knitted more tightly in the suspicion that Paris really did have his schedule memorized. "There's a couple tables outside by the Student Union... or inside," he said, shifting awkwardly before realizing he probably had to lead the way and turned to move around Paris, his head ducked down and glowering at his shoes so as not to give his attention to Paris.

He knew he was being childish, but it still hurt to think about the time they were together and then... finding out...

Paris noted Chris's mood and behavior right away, but chose not to make a comment about it and didn't let it ruin his plan or lessen his own mood. If he knew what Chris's schedule was it was only because they'd had to work their dates around when either of them had class or work, not because he was being a creepy stalker. He'd simply paid attention and knew when his boyfriend was available. He didn't automatically forget all that now that they were no longer dating.

He trailed a few steps behind since Chris didn't seem all that inclined to look at him, and didn't say anything else until they came to the tables Chris had mentioned. The temperatures might grow a bit colder at night, but the days were still pleasant and the sun was currently shining, so they chose one outside. Paris took a seat across from Chris and looked at him with an expression that was both open and serious in the hopes that Chris wouldn't suspect him of plotting anything.

Because he wasn't. Not at all. He was done with purposefully tricking people, and he wished Chris would keep in mind how much he'd hurt himself by what he'd done instead of assuming that he would simply go back to his old ways.

"This isn't me taking care of you. This is me making a peace offering," he said, motioning to the sandwich and coffee. "It's not my fault you eat crap all the time and I happen to know where to pick up a decent sandwich. Hurry up and get started on it. You don't have very long."

Paris sat a bit forward, leaning against the table with his arms casually crossed over top of it. He didn't let himself think about how he hadn't even thought they'd see one another again after the last time they'd met up, and focused instead on his reasons for seeking Chris out now.

"Your mom probably didn't tell you 'cause I asked her not to, but I had an audition the other day. Madame Volkova, that's my dance instructor, she has a lot of friends and acquaintances from the days when she used to perform that she still keeps in touch with, and one of them owns a local ballet company. They're going to be doing the Nutcracker this winter. Apparently I've been the topic of conversation recently and Madame Volkova invited the owner, the producer, and the choreographer to come talk to me and they let me do a private audition. They ended up offering the part to me right then and there, and I accepted," he explained all in one go, figuring the faster he reassured Chris that this had nothing to do with their relationship, the less time Chris would spend pouting and being suspicious.

He honestly didn't know what to think or what he should say, so he didn't say anything and he tried not to think of anything as he set his stuff down at the table and took a sip of his coffee before pulling open the package to start on his sandwich, as per Paris's request.

"Aren't you going to eat anything?" he asked, feeling like a douche being the only one eating. Paris could have at least brought something with him to snack on so he didn't look like the inconsiderate b*****d who was just eating in front of someone else because he could. He pushed the second half of the sandwich towards his ex, figuring he might as well offer, even though he suspected that Paris would refuse.

His eyes went back to staring at the sandwich in front of him when Paris denied taking care of him, not knowing why he was getting fussy over a peace offering. It was probably because he was a spoiled brat and liked being taken care of, but that wasn't something he was going to say out loud.

"You're going to be in the Nutcracker?" he blinked, glancing up at Paris when he told him the news. He didn't know what he should say now, though... He knew Paris danced, and he'd seen him fool around some times before, but it wasn't like he'd ever seen a recital or production. "Congratulations," he mumbled, feeling uncomfortable that his mother knew before even he did. "What part did you get...?" he wondered, not really sure if he wanted to guess and then get it wrong and somehow offend him. Paris wasn't a normal guy, so he didn't think he would be all that thrilled about getting a guy's part... Er... not that he was pretending to be a girl or anything... he just looked like one...

"Don't worry about it. I ate before coming," he replied, and pushed the second half of the sandwich back.

He'd considered waiting for Chris and eating with him, but he'd been wary of making it seem too much like a date. It wasn't one. He hadn't had that in mind at all, at least not until he'd begun to worry that Chris might be uncomfortable or not want to talk to him if things seemed a little too date-ish. He was concerned enough to try and make Chris feel as comfortable as possible, not only because he wanted to win his agreement but also because he still cared about him.

Paris couldn't stop the smile that crossed his face at Chris congratulations and gradual interest. In all honesty, he was thrilled for the opportunity and had barely restrained himself from both crying and jumping up and down with joy when he'd been given the news. Remaining composed in front of people he was attempting to impress had never been more difficult. Since then, he'd been unable to walk around without at least the beginnings of a smile on his face. The good news and such an amazing chance to prove himself could not have come at a better time, considering how poorly things had been going for him recently.

"They want me to be the Sugar Plum Fairy," he said, all but beaming as he shared his news, leaning a little further over the table in his excitement. "Not for all the performances. They're running shows from the end of November all through December and they've double cast the role. I'll dance some nights and one of their other ballerinas will dance the rest. It's a really iconic role and I've always wanted to do it. I auditioned for a different company last year. I can't remember if I told you that or not. Either way, I didn't get it because they didn't want to cast a boy for the part, but this company's willing to take a chance on me. If girls can dance male roles then boys should be able to dance female roles, right? I mean, with the right costume, you wouldn't even be able to tell I'm a boy. The owner and producer have been friends of Madame Volkova's for a long time. They seemed really excited to meet me, and they were so nice and supportive. They kept going on and on about my form and posture and how great my bone structure is. I really couldn't have asked for a better chance."

He realized he was gushing and had to stop himself, smiling a bit sheepishly. "Sorry, I'm getting off track. The point is, I'll have to spend a lot more time at the studio, which means I won't be able to work at the shop as often. Dad's offered to take some of the afternoon shifts when I can't come in, but he's not exactly at the peak of health and I don't want him doing too much and setting himself back even more, and then I remembered that... you'd offered to help out before, and I guess I was just wondering if... you know, if you wouldn't mind taking a few afternoon's each week," he finished, watching Chris warily.
PostPosted: Sun Oct 09, 2011 6:47 pm

Oh, right... of course Paris would have eaten before coming to meet him. That was convenient. Chris paused to stare at the half of the sandwich that was pushed back to him for a few moments, before picking it up and moving it back to his side. It wasn't that big of a deal anyway...

He did look up when Paris started going on about his audition and how he'd always wanted to be the Sugar Plum Fairy. Chris couldn't help but smile softly at the thought of his dreams coming true, and it was almost enough to wash the bitterness he felt, for what had happened between them, away completely. He shook his head when Paris apologized, not minding at all. "No, it's okay. I don't mind," he insisted, knowing that Paris would look very much like a girl in the right clothes. He kind of always looked like a girl, which was both strange and maybe a little inspiring. To be able to convince others that he was something they expected but not...

Okay, it was different when it was dealing with relationships, but if Paris played a female role in a ballet, well... that was kind of awesome.

Chris's smile faltered a bit when Paris brought up the real reason for why he met up with him. Oh... so it was for him to take some shifts. "Paris," he said, leaning forward a little after glancing around to make sure they were out of earshot of everyone around them. "There's a lot of stuff going on right now... Stuff I can't really get in to. You know what I am..." he started slowly, figuring he should probably explain what he could and why it would be difficult for him to devote his time to helping out with the shop. "The civilians that went missing? They're stuck in space... we don't know how, but there's a place that they're stuck, and recently there have been monsters attacking it. We don't know how they got in, but..."

The turn in the conversation toward the missing civilians was not what Paris had expected. He'd assumed that Chris, being such a nice guy and willing to help under just about any circumstance, would immediately agree once he saw how important this was to him and everything would be settled. He hadn't thought he'd try to use their powered responsibilities as an excuse to get out of it, and as soon as he did, well... it completely changed the tone of the entire confrontation.

"Okay..." Paris said slowly, his previously excited expression turning part confused, part annoyed. "And what does that have to do with this?"

If this was Chris's way of saying "Sorry, Paris, I don't have the time," then Paris had completely overestimated his sense of generosity -- and completely underestimated his ability to spout off bullshit. Paris didn't understand how he could not have the time, even considering all the things that were going on now. He got up at the crack of dawn himself and worked until three, then went to his dance lessons but was back at the store by five, only to work until seven, go home, cook dinner for himself and his father, and head out the door for either a night of patrolling or volunteering at the Surrounding. If he could fit all that in to a single day, why was Chris suddenly incapable of doing the same?

"Are you saying you don't have the time for me anymore?" he wondered, not noticing how his voice had just acquired the disappointed tone of the typical jealous girlfriend. "I'm only asking for three afternoons a week, Chris. Dad'll take the other two days and Saturday. What's the big deal? You get out of class at two-fifteen every afternoon. How do you not have the time to drop by the store and stay until seven? What, do you drop your books as soon as school gets out to go gallivanting through the solar system aiding civilians in need? Aren't there plenty of other people who can take care of that while you're down here? It'd only be for four or five hours every other day, Chris."
PostPosted: Sun Oct 09, 2011 7:40 pm

Was he trying to avoid Paris...? He felt like a total jerk the moment Paris's expression changed, and he lowered his head in shame, a flush rising in his cheeks.

What was he trying to say? He knew that he didn't have to spend all his time at the Surrounding. Hell, even Paris knew that he wouldn't spend all his free time at the Surrounding, and that just made him feel even more like a douche.

Chris shifted awkwardly, keeping his head down as he shook his head at him. He didn't think he could look in his eyes at this point. "No, you're right. Yeah... Three afternoons a week should be fine. I can do it," he quickly agreed, but knew it wouldn't be enough to recover from his selfish excuses in order to avoid Paris. Wow, he was stooping really low, and Paris knew he was.

"I'm happy for you," he tried to save himself, cautioning a glance up at Paris, even though he could sense the annoyance from him. "For getting a part you've wanted, and been trying for." Especially if he tried and didn't get in last year because he was a boy... And then he rejected him because he was a boy... It was just a vicious cycle for Paris, wasn't it...? "It really is something, and I know you'll be great. So... yeah, I can help out at the store. It's probably best I don't keep throwing myself into what goes on in space, anyway... I still can't do much and feel like I'm getting in the way of everyone."

He only had a compass, after all. What good could he do for everyone with just a compass and no magic?

"I'm sorry... I'd be happy to help you out. I really would, and you're right. You can ask me any time for anything. You might have to kick me in the head first," he added with a weak smile, but it faltered and he shifted awkwardly in shame again. Wow, Chris... way to have double-standards, apparently.

"You know I'll be great?" he wondered. He didn't bother to disguise the tone of disbelief that had overtaken his voice. "No, you don't know, because you've never even seen me dance before."

Not that he really blamed him for that. He'd never bothered to show him. He hadn't really thought Chris would be interested in something like that seeing as he was a total jock and liked all those stereotypical "manly" things likes building manly buildings and playing manly sports and impressing the ladies with his manly guitar. He probably hadn't seen five minutes worth of a ballet ever, and if he had Paris doubted he'd really been interested in it. He could easily imagine Chris falling asleep in the audience from lack of physical stimulation.

Thank God he wasn't usually that much of a snorer. At least he wouldn't end up disturbing anyone else. He'd just drool all over his nice clothes and end up embarrassing himself when the more cultured people around him gave him dirty looks.

And while those thoughts were swirling through Paris's mind, the annoyance and displeasure he felt never once left his face. Chris's attempts to save face didn't improve things. In anything, they only made Paris feel ever more bitter.

Frustrated, he stood to his feet to lean toward him over the table, palms pressed flat against the surface to support him. "You listen here, Christopher Gallo. I've apologized for what I did, multiple times, and I've done what little I can to make up for it. I'm not going to let you make me feel bad or selfish for being happy about something that I've wanted and worked hard for for a very, very long time just because you're still bitter and angry that I lied to you and that you fell for it. Let's move on, shall we? You don't get to avoid me now that we're not together anymore. You are not the only person in this world who has a lot to deal with. I have plenty of other things going on that you don't have a clue about, and if I can handle all that with all the responsibilities I have on my plate, you can do this for me."

Paris stared him straight in the eye, frowning and glaring and silently daring him to argue.

"I'm asking you and not anyone else because you're one of the few people who understands my situation from beginning to end, because you offered before we broke things off, and because I trust you not to ******** it up. This isn't some ploy to spend more time with you or get back together with you or somehow trick you into giving me another chance. I get that your masculinity's been challenged or whatever, but I thought you were a big enough man not to let that get in the way of your offer to help."

So much for civility.
PostPosted: Sun Oct 09, 2011 8:54 pm

Hey, he was trying to be nice and make up for the fact that he didn't automatically agree to help Paris out, and what happens? He's suddenly nagged at for everything?

Chris rose to his feet shortly after Paris had, not sure that he liked being looked down on by his ex, not to mention the one who'd lied to him and lead him on for months. "Don't you start getting up in my face, Paris," he growled, not sure why Paris was getting all snappy about this, anyway. He was asking for his help, right? He had tried to make peace after his lackluster agreement right off the bat, and now he was being spoken to like a child? Not if he could help it!

"What are you going through that I don't have a clue about?" he argued, taking on Paris's dare. "I thought I knew everything you were going through, unless there's even more stuff that you lied to me about and are hiding?" he accused, glaring back and silently daring Paris to take back what he'd just said about not knowing what was going on in his life. What more was Paris going through that he hadn't told him? He had dance, and his father was sick, and the store...

His temper faltered momentarily, his expression turning concerned for a few moments. "Your father isn't getting worse is he...?" And then he realized that Paris wouldn't let him work if he was getting worse.

"I never said you were trying to get back together with me!" he snapped, his face turning red, but whether from embarrassment or anger, he didn't know. "You were the one who lied to me, and my masculinity hasn't been challenged, Paris. I just don't like being ******** lied to!" Seriously.

"I said I'd help, now are you going to keep arguing with me and make me change my mind or are you going to tell me when I start??"

Straightening back up when Chris stood as well, Paris crossed his arms over his chest and raised a brow as if to ask "are you seriously going to pull the douche act with me?" He wasn't about to let Chris make him feel bad about anything, not right now, not when things were starting to go right, not when he should be happy.

"Sorry, but you lost the right to ask me personal questions when you threw me out of your apartment," he said.

Stubbornly, he glared at Chris a little longer, not wanting to be the one who backed down first, before finally just huffing and rolling his eyes and plopping himself into his seat.

"I didn't come here to argue with you. I didn't come here to discuss our relationship. I didn't come here to hear about how I lied to you again. I know, okay? I get it. I'm here because I have a good opportunity to finally make something out of myself and do something that I happen to love doing. Maybe you don't get it because you've got your head stuck on baseball and couldn't understand the subtle intricacies of ballet if you tried, but this could either make me or break me. This is my life. I could actually have a future that's more than all the crap I have to deal with right now if I just make this work. If I do good at this, if I can prove that I'm just as capable of doing this role as all the women who've done it before, maybe they'll keep me on and I can do other productions. Maybe I'll actually get to be somebody instead of feeling like nothing all the time, without having to live in the shadow of you and everyone else who's proven themselves better."

Gradually, he let his anger and frustration just seep out of him, and he shifted the tone of his voice to something a bit less confrontational and a bit more plaintive.

"You start Monday... if you can manage it. Monday, Wednesday and Friday'll be all you have to worry about. You can bring Anna in with you if you want. Sometimes I bring Sassy. She likes to sleep on the windowsill. And there's plenty of room at the counter for you to do your homework. It tends to get slow a lot, so you'll have plenty of time to do your own thing while you're there. If you want to come by after class tomorrow, I can teach you have to work the register and how to cut the mat board. There's a machine. It pretty much does it itself. You just have to know how to put in the measurements."
PostPosted: Sun Oct 09, 2011 10:52 pm

"I couldn't understand??" he snapped, unable to keep his temper down at that little jab. "Maybe I don't understand everything about ballet, but you don't think I could understand the detail and work someone has put into something?! Because that's sure what it sounded like, Paris. You know I live for details. Baseball isn't the only thing in my life, but if you're insinuating that any dumb jock can understand the physics of a ball being thrown, or the statistics of every batter up against you... ********, what do you know about me that I don't...?"

Paris had seen him pitch... Paris knew how much he loved baseball and how much he loved working with his designs. It was the details that he loved most about things, not just the final result.

"When have I ever put you in my shadow, Paris? Did I ever do something to make you feel like you weren't good enough? I would really like to know so I can apologize," he said, although as he spoke his temper slowly started to lessen and he eventually sat back down once Paris did so as well. He was still tense and obviously on edge, but he was doing his best to keep his voice down and to stop cursing.

"Monday is fine... And I can come over tomorrow. Is that all?" he grumbled, staring down at the half eaten sandwich he was unable to finish due to their sudden argument.

"I didn't say it was anything you did," Paris told him, ignoring Chris's response to the argument for now, as he wasn't in the mood to continue to be drawn into it and it felt like Chris was taking his words and twisting them around anyway, so he focused on the topic he thought was a little less heated. "If I was ever in anyone's shadow it was because I let myself stay there instead of doing something to shine on my own."

He'd settled before. Not when it came to Chris, because he'd definitely lucked out when he'd chanced at date with him, but with everything else in his life. He'd done the exact same thing that had led his father to remain where he was his entire life instead of pursuing something he truly loved. He'd allowed one or two minor set backs to control the direction he took his life in. He'd dreamed about getting out of the rut his life was stuck in, but never really did anything for himself to start climbing.

He'd settled and he'd grown complacent and he'd clung to someone he'd thought he had a shot of making it better with, instead of standing on his own two feet and doing it on his own.

"I mean, look at us, Chris. Look at what we were," he said, motioning with his hand as if to include the two of them in one unit. "You have everything. Good grades, a good family, you pretty much know what you want to do with your life. Anyone could look at you and see that you're going to be somebody. People are going to know your name, because you have the right connections and you have talent that you know how to use to get where you want to go. You know how to make a life for yourself. The only thing you're missing is someone to spend that life with."

Sometimes he wondered if Chris even realized how lucky he was. Aside from the war they fought primarily by night, he didn't have any other worries. If that problem ceased to exist, Paris imagined Chris's life would be a breeze. He knew exactly where he wanted to go in life and he knew exactly how he was going to get there. He was already well on his way.

"And then you have me," he continued. "I had no idea what I wanted to do with myself. I got kicked out of one school and I was flunking out of the other. The only thing I had was my dancing, but even that wasn't getting me anywhere for a while. It was always 'You don't show enough emotion, Paris,' or 'I'm sorry, but you're just not what we're looking for.' Then I started dating you, and I took care of you, and I hung on your arm like a shiny little trophy. Hell, even Ladon said I was practically your housewife. But I was okay with that. I can honestly say that I was happy when we were together, but now that we're not I have to find some way to pull myself up, and now this opportunity has practically landed in my lap and I'm going to make the most of it, because dancing is what I love, it is what I want to do with my life. I finally have some direction. I'm finally beginning to develop some sort of a goal. That's all I meant."
