It was a good day. Wookith lay curled in the hatchling-sized wallow next to I'man's bed, deep in sleep. His belly bulged with food, and his skin shone with the oil he'd painstakingly rubbed into him. What a lovely big brown he was, too. He would be a good flier, I'man thought, and strong.

Now he was just looking forward to getting clean. Between the cut on his knee, the dirt that had managed to get all over him during the hatching, and the blood and bits of gore that decorated his formerly-white robe from the feeding, he felt well and truly disgusting.

He stripped the robe off and dumped it on the floor, kicking it far from him, near the edge of the curtain. He would take it out to the midden heap later, and for now, was glad to have it off his body. He peeled the wraps off, freeing her chest and hips from their constraints. "Ugh," she whispered to herself, "how foul." They would need to be changed, too.

Bending over, she picked up the pot of water and cloth she'd brought in with her and began to sponge herself off, beginning with her knee. She couldn't have tended to it any sooner, but as soon as possible seemed right - she didn't want it to get infected, even if it was only skin-deep.

It took her some time to get satisfactorily clean, but finally her skin was clear and the bits of grime were gone, even from under her nails. She started to look around for something to use for new wraps, because she was not going to put those things - she thought they might have gained the ability to move on their own - back on her nice, clean self.

"Hey I'man?" R'yn started to pull aside the curtains to the older boy's nook. "I was going to give you this the other day, but you were busy, so--" he held out a pot with hot sand, it clearly held a firelizard egg. His blue eyes grew wide, and he stared for a long moment. "I'man, you've got tumors," he said with some awe. Tumors were bad. Tumors could kill people. He didn't know much more about them than that.

"Wait..." He stiffened at a sudden realization; for the first time in his life, he was seeing a naked girl. He went pale, and then blushed. She was--beautiful! Why was she hiding such beauty by pretending to be a boy? "I'man... You're a girl."

He sounded as if he couldn't quite believe his eyes. "I always thought you were a guy. We've been sleeping in the same dorm!" There was the horror. He'd been sleeping with a girl close to his bed! He took one last look and bolted.

He had to tell everyone.

She dropped the pot. It shattered, and water went everywhere, but I'mana didn't notice. All she saw was the younger weyrling standing in the entryway, staring at her. Horror struck her dumb and turned her into a frozen statue for a long minute until she threw herself at the cot, scrambling for something to throw over herself.

She flailed at the blanket, and wound up with it over her head and tangled around her arms, but more or less covered.

"You're a girl." The dreaded words had been spoken.

"R'yn, I..." was all she could choke out before he took off at a dead run, possibly faster than she'd seen anyone run in her life.

She wasn't sure what to do; go after him, or collapse. What good would either do? After a long minute, she gathered her clothes, not bothering to find new wraps, and dressed herself. She sat down on her cot, and sighed.

Minemineminemine, where are you going?! Why are you going into the BOYS section of the barracks?!

Pausing with jars of salve in hand, Mya smiled down at the frantic blue as he bleated out his fears multiple times over. Such a good soul he was but so much like a child in ways as well.

"Well, some of the others got knocked around a bit at the Hatching. I thought it best I get something from the Healers."

But why?! Will they not heal?!

"Calm down, you dimglow." Kirth started at the playful insult before giving her giant eyes of sadness and woe, something she only gave him an affectionate scratching under his chin before shifting her burden in her arms. They moved on and only just reached the building when one....what was his name....R'yn? came scrambling out like a horde of demons was after him.

Both stared after him with a look of confused, it passed between them when glanced at each other. Worried, Mya carefully knocked on the border surrounding the doorway.

"Heyla, is everything alright in there?"

"Heyla, is everything all right in there?"

I'mana took a deep breath. Here it is, she thought, time to face the music. She stood and pulled back the curtain. Her hand was shaking. She forced it as still as she could, willing her expression as blank as she could manage. "Hi."

"Tomoth!" A groan escaped the boy as he stood up, holding his arms out at he stared at himself. He was soaking wet and it was all thanks to the brown who was staring back at him with amusement. Do not look at me like that, N'rinmine. It is not my fault you fell into the water. Was he laughing? N'rin wrinkled his nose and walked out of the lake, tugging at his shirt and trying to wring the water out. "It's a good thing we're not going to the hatching, I doubt I would've looked presentable." The young brownweyrling dropped to the shore and glared at the brown dragon in the water. You should be more graceful mine, you have to keep up with me! Tomoth rumbled his amusement as he ducked his head underneath the water.

"Well aren't you feeling playful today?" N'rin grumbled, reaching up and pushing his hair back from his face. Now...while Tomoth was playing..what was he supposed to do? Hm, oh was that a bronze and his rider?

T'rinmine! I want to play as well! Can I do play? Can I? Can I? So early in the morning. The young man tugged at his hair before nodding at the bronze. "Did you not want to go to the hatching? You woke me up this early for that." The brunette gave a quick yawn as the bronze all but ran off to the lake to visit his brown brother. Tomoth! Tomoth! What are you playing! Can I play? Really, hadn't Leoth grown up even just a little? Chuckling at his partner's excitement, T'rin followed and gave a quick nod to N'rin. Not even bothering to say a greeting to the younger boy, he crossed his arms over his chest and kept an eye on the bronze.

Playing? I am not playing! The brown quickly straightened himself and tried to appear as if he was the noble being he thought he was. But you can keep me company I suppose. Mine is not doing so well with that.

Leoth quickly moved and pretty much dived right into the lake to join his brother. Of course! I would not mind, but can we play?

However, his eyes were quickly drawn back to the barracks when he saw R'yn come running out. What was wrong with him? 'Hey, be careful out there Leoth. I'll be right back.' He quickly warned before heading towards the boy. N'rin noticed him leaving and turned to see what he was going towards. R'yn? Frowning, the wet boy pushed himself from the ground and followed after. "R'yn!" The two boys managed to say the same name at the same time.

Just as R'yn went bolting out of I'man's room, R'nan was coming back from from cleaning Burmeth, carrying a -fortunately empty- bucket. By the time he saw R'yn coming, he barely had enough time to open his mouth to say something before they collided head-on and R'nan was sent recoiling backwards.

"Ow!" R'nan said monotoneously, sounding bored and only faintly upset. He hardly sounded hurt, more like he was simply trying to advertise his presence. In fact, this happened more than you'd think. Although he knew it was equally his fault for not watching where he was going.

R'nan sat up and rubbed his neck just as Burmeth came hurtling around the corner. Oh no. Mine's ended up on the floor again. He does that a lot, you know. he added aside, to anyone who would listen.
Thanks for that, Burmeth. R'nan stood up and brushed off his clothes. He recognized that, being chest height on most people, it would take some time for them to get used to looking down that far, but he hardly needed to be reminded of it, much less from his own!

He picked up the bucket and looked up, suddenly curious now that he had time to think about it. "What's the big hurry?" he asked, "Did something happen?".

"Shards, I'm sorry, R'nan!" R'yn paused to take a breath, offering a hand to help the younger boy up. "Are you alright?" So concerned was he, that he nearly forgot about the reason he'd fled the barracks. Being short, he knew he should have seen R'nan, but he had been in such a hurry to tell people his discovery, that he hadn't been watching where he was going.

"I'man's a girl," he informed the younger candidate. "Nothing's wrong, I was just surprised. You know... We've been thinking she was a male for--since she first came to the Weyr! You'd think the Candidatemaster would have realized." Maybe F'kir wasn't as observant as R'yn had thought. That knowledge would have been useful when pranking him. Really, it would have been.

Mine also, Gereth told Burmeth with some humor. Is often on the floor.

"T'rin, N'rin!" R'yn greeted the two older weyrlings. "I'man's a girl," he added, almost breathlessly. "I've only just gotten away."

N'rin could only gape at his younger friend as if he had suddenly grown another head. "What do you mean I'man's a girl?" What was the bronzerider talking about? It wasn't like a girl could pretend she was a boy for so long and no one notice at all. It just wasn't likely, the dragons would've have said something. Or surely the candidatemaster, the weyrlingmaster, shards; any of the older riders! Sapphire eyes narrowed before he stepped up to his friend and lightly smacked him upside the head. "Seriously, you shouldn't be making these kinds of things up! I thought ya had better taste in pranks then this."

Mine, you worry too much. It does not mattter, they will never be greater than us. Tomoth pointed out. Oh, well not us. I am much better than you after all. N'rin's eyes snapped over to the brown as he walked from the lake and curled up on dry ground, watching the small group with just a big of interest.

-----------------------------------------------------

Rather than just ignore R'nan as N'rin did, T'rin walked up and patted the boy's shoulder in a greeting. However, he did not talk since it just might interrupt the conversation. Now why would R'yn think that I'man was a girl? And if it was true, why would I'man have been disguised as a boy to begin with? A small frown pulled at his lips as he attempted to think up reasons why anyone would come to the Weyr and do such a thing. 'Leoth...were you aware that I'man was a girl?'

The bronze paused in the middle of splashing water at Tomoth turning his head to look at the small group. Who is I'man? Do I know them? Does she want to play? T'rin had to keep himself from groaning. He had forgotten momentarily that Leoth wouldn't actually know. Does it matter mine? Hers has chosen her, she can not leave now. The dragon rumbled in amusement at his rider. He had such silly thoughts.

"Does it matter if I'man was really a girl?" The words escaped his lips and the young man glanced towards the three younger boys. "Regardless of what we might think, the dragon always knows."

"Oh, hey. It's alright. It's not your fault." R'nan mumbled, already feeling bad for getting annoyed. He took R'yn's hand and picked himself up. "Who's I'man again..?" he asked, to himself. When he did finally put a face to the name, he was surprised. "I'man? Really? Are you sure you weren't seeing things, R'yn?"

The two older riders came over. R'nan nodded back to T'rin's greeting. "'Gotten away'?!" R'nan repeated. "I know you don't have much experience, R'yn, but girls don't bite." He felt bad, but he couldn't help but laugh at the way R'yn put it.

R'yn seemed genuinely flustered. Was it possible that he was joking like N'rin said, or was he actually telling the truth?
"But you're right, R'yn, you'd think the candidate master would have noticed. Unless, he did know and let him- her do it anyway..?" Although it didn't really bother him, R'nan couldn't think of any reason why I'man would want to hide the fact that she was a girl. He still didn't really believe what R'yn was saying, it was just too bizarre.

Meanwhile, Burmeth looked from one stunned face to another, growing increasingly impatient.
R'nan, what is everyone talking about? he said, desiring an explanation. His curiosity burned through R'nan, making him suddenly desperate to know the truth. He fought the feeling, knowing it belonged to Burmeth and not him.
"Aparently this one weyrling, I'man, is a girl."
So? There are lots of girls. What is so interesting about that? He had a point.
"Well, he was living in the boy's dormitory for one.." R'nan said.

Burmeth did not find this particularly interesting, but it seemed that His and the others wanted to know, and Burmeth wanted this conversation to be over so that he and His could play.
Never fear, R'nan, you Burmeth will solve this mystery for you! And then he said directly to the younger dragon, Wookith, yours is I'man, yes? Is it a male person or a girl person? It doesn't matter to me, but Mine desire to know.

I'mana sat on her cot, worrying her lip between her teeth. What would happen now? Would R'yn run and tell everybody? Would he tell the weyrleaders? It didn't seem likely to her that he would keep it to himself - he was pretty freaked out.

She laid down, resting her head on her pillow, curled into something resembling a fetal position. She gazed at Wookith, a sad smile on her face. Maybe everything would be okay. What were they going to do - condemn a dragon because his rider had lied? Hardly. So whatever her punishment was, it couldn't be anything too bad, or it would harm Wookith, too. She reached out a hand and caressed his snout, and he lifted his head.

He looked steadily at her, eyes whirling a calming blue-green colour. Do not be distressed, Mine. There are other female brown riders, yes? He placed his head gently on the cot beside her and blew air into her face.

I'mana chuckled. "Yes. It's not that, though, Wookith. I lied... to everyone."

Wookith didn't really understand what a "lie" was. But he was here, and he was hers, and she was his, and wasn't that good? Nobody could separate them, and as long as they had each other, they would be okay - therefore, there was no way they could not be okay. He huffed again, nudging at her ear with his nose, and changed the subject.

Mine... what is that?

"What's what, now?" She sat halfway up, and saw it. A clay pot, not the one she'd brought in herself, but lidded and clearly not filled with liquid, as it sat on an angle. Somehow in the confusion, she guessed it had been dropped. I'mana stood and walked to the corner where it had come to rest, and picked up the small pot. It didn't seem damaged in any way. It was warm to the touch.

She sat down on her cot with it, just a little bit mystified. Maybe it's R'yn's...?

Burmeth says his wants to know if you are a male person or a female person.

I'mana sighed and flopped backward against the wall. "All right, Wookith. Go ahead and tell him."

Φ

He'd been minding his own business, tending to his dragon. Just finishing up the oiling, in fact, and Luth seemed to be drifting off to sleep right there. Suddenly, he was alert. He pushed his snout into the air, eyes wide and whirling rapidly, but still a relatively collected shade of blue. What is it, Luth?

Distress! Upset!

I'dan turned, surprised to see a small and quite literal pile of weyrlings, several of them younger than he, all tangled up together like a needlethorn bush. He began to walk toward them, beckoning Luth to follow him.

He stopped cold, however, when he heard their conversation. Were they discussing I'man? Did they know? He felt his fists clench, and took a deep breath to force himself calm. He strode up to the boys, a casual mask forced over his anxious expression. "Everybody okay? What's going on?"
PostPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 12:18 pm

When Wookith responded, Burmeth was intrigued. Fascinating. Why would she do that? Is there a particular reason? Is it fun? Do many people do it? the curious dragon questioned. He was not judgmental, but he also wasn't the most sensitive of the situation. Meanwhile, he informed his rider.
Wookith says yes.
What? Really, Burmeth? R'nan was suddenly flustered. Until now, he'd gone along with the conversation, hardly believing in.
"Wookith says yes." R'nan echoed "R'yn's right. But..?" R'nan trailed off, frowning, visibly confused.
I wonder why she would..?
I'm not sure why yet, Mine, I am asking that. But it is curious isn't it?
Did you ask.. I mean, how is I'man feeling about all this? She obviously didn't want us to know.
I'll ask. Wookith, Mine wants to know what Yours is feeling.
Don't phrase it like that, Burmeth! It sounds weird.
Oh. Hm. Hang on. Ah! He wants to know if she is alright? R'nan felt kind of lame using his dragon instead of going to talk to her, but he didn't trust himself to act normally if he saw her in person.

Out loud, he said, "I hope she's okay." This only occured to him just now, but she probably didn't want everyone finding out like this. He suddenly felt bad for talking about her like she wasn't here. "Um, I know it's too late and I'm the one who asked and all, but do you think maybe I'man didn't want you telling everyone?" he pointed out to R'yn.

R'nan looked up to see another new weyrling approaching. He didn't know them well, but he knew enough to know that was I'man's brother. He was doing well to hide it, but he seemed angry. "Ah.."
I think we're in trouble. he said to Burmeth.
Never fear, Mine. I'm right here. Bumeth said as he moved protectivly closer to his small rider.

"I told you!" R'yn said, frowning at his friends. How could they accuse him of making this all up? Sure, he'd told stories in the past, but this--this was an outrage! It wasn't fair! "I wasn't making this up! She's a girl! I went to give her a firelizard egg and all, to congratulate her on Impressing--you know because I'd met her before, and Zara had a clutch so..." he hesitated, frowning at N'rin still. He continued to frown at the older boy until he noticed I'dan.

"I gave your sister a firelizard egg," he said, attempting to be casual. "I hope she likes it. Zara thinks it might be a bronze, but I think it's a bit too big. Maybe a gold?" He shrugged. "Or a really big blue or something."

He glanced at T'rin. "The dragons agree with me. I wasn't lying."
PostPosted: Wed Oct 19, 2011 5:05 pm

"Don't frown at me! You tell all kinda stories. Sometimes it's hard to keep them straight. Who would've thought I'man would've been a girl!" How could he have failed to notice that, surely he of all people would've seen some kinda sign. N'rin was after all pretty good with the ladies. In his own mind at least. "Well, who cares what if she is or not. That's just one more girl to add to our ranks." And to his list of girls to flirt with. "A'lin will be happy about this. Makes three female brown riders." Blue eyes rolled for a moment before he glanced over at the new voice. Oh..shards. It was I'man's brother.

R'yn of course opened his mouth and just spilled it out that they knew his 'brother' was actually his sister. N'rin felt the need to bury his face in his hands. Sharditall, he really had to teach the younger boy when it was best to play dumb. And now was one of those times.

-------------------------------------------------------

Had R'yn not been anything but a weyrling, he should've gone into the Harper craft. The boy just couldn't really keep his mouth shut, could he? Even when the brother of the person they were talking to had showed up, he still ran his mouth. T'rin felt the need to reach out and smack the boy upside his head. Shouldn't a bronzerider have a bit more tact at a time like this? The other boy was bound to be protective of his sister after all. With a sigh and a tug of brunette hair, the older boy gave a nod. "I never said you were lying."

Eyes turned to I'dan and he gave a polite smile. "It seems R'yn accidentally walked in on I'man and has decided to go about and tell everyone." Another tug of hair and he gave a shake of his head. "Sorry about this, I'll attempt to see if I can get him to keep his big mouth shut."

Leoth on the other hand was excited to see another dragon approach the group. Oh, hello there Luth! Are you here to join Tomoth and I in the lake? The water feels just right today! The bronze shook himself before making his way up to the smaller bronze. Are you okay? Has something upset you? There was so many distressing feelings coming from the group and now the little bronze.

If he'd had any doubts that the group knew the secret, they were blown away when R'yn turned to face I'dan and said he'd given his sister a fire lizard egg.

Before he could ask, though, T'rin volunteered nearly all the information he was looking for. He was silent for a long moment, a serious look on his face. His fists clenched tightly as he turned to face R'yn. "So that's your attitude when you find out a secret about somebody? You run and tell the whole sharding Weyr?" His arms shook with the effort of keeping his hands down.

Beside him, Luth shifted closer, pressing his weight against I'dan's leg. Do not be angry, mine. He is a child. He does not see.

I'dan looked away from R'yn for a moment, collecting himself, and then looked back, something dark and indiscernible in his eyes. "Where is she?"

Luth turned to face Leoth, eyes whirling rapidly in distress. No, Leoth, I cannot. Mine needs me. His clutchmate needs him. He looked sadly toward the weyrling barracks. She is upset. She is afraid. Mine is very angry...
