Beads were harder to work with than they looked.

And as Devika tried and tried again to fasten them to the necklace she was working on, she felt ready to swear them off forever and throw her whole project into the sand.

Sneering silently, eyes squinting one way, then another, the lioness pried and pawed at the golden chain. She pressed down on the bead to fit it into its place, arm vibrating with pressure. After a few tense moments, the bead snapped into place.

Face lighting up a bit, the lioness sighed in triumph and collected more beads to herself.

Looking much more content, she took her time choosing which color to add next, completely oblivious to the world.

The tales of Caspian's daring escape from his evil uncle and his corrupted pride had made an impression on his son. From cubhood, Rillian had pounced at shadows, given chaise to anything that popped, moved, or shifted. Sands, locusts, and even his own reflection had become a sparring partner. The tails of his siblings became chew toys, and the ears of his parents became the weak spot of his enemies. Of course- his over-eager nature to 'right all wrongs' had gotten him on the wrong side of a firey red-headed male about his age.

As he grew, so did both his rivalry with the young Saul and his thirst for glorious adventure, virtue, and justice. In his mind- he was the shining example of his family's proud lineage. The blood of kings ran through his veins, filling his heart and mind with an uncanny since of right and the strength to ensure that he always stood against evil.

To everyone else with half a mind- he was a hammy youth with far too much energy and a head far too high in the clouds. Once or twice he'd even been called a trouble-maker. In his spouts with Saul, the cubs had managed to rough each other up. As they began to grow their encounters grew more and more serious and destructive. Saul, a sharp-tongued youth had bullied Rillian and his siblings as far back as he could remember. Rillian, a youngster eager to live up to his father's legacy, was all too eager to put a stop to it.

He was old enough to begin training and while his bold statements, over-the-top declarations, and half-baked adventures had ended, his outlook on the world and his own ambitions lingered. He was growing into a well-muscled young adult with a dusty brown mane to match his father and a golden pelt to match the sands of his homeland. He took on every job he could find and trained whenever he had a spare moment. That day- his goal was to out-pace a bird in flight.

It had taken him all morning to find a flock to pursue. All morning he had harassed the poor creatures, chasing them from the oasis to the dunes and back. All the while he had disrupted individuals who were actually contributing something to the pride.

Currently, the flock had dispersed into two remaining birds that Rillian was able to track and chase. He tore after the winged creatures, kicking clouds of sand up in his wake as he panted against the desert wind. His eyes turned upwards and his paws flying over the ground- his attention was elsewhere. He was getting closer! CLOSER-

And hi artisan.

The young male first felt contact with something solid- far too warm and furry to be a rock, far too boney to be a dune. He then saw his own paws flipping up towards the sky followed by the ground. Horrified, his mind scrambled while his body seemed to be frozen. Time righted itself with a thud and a face full of sand.

It happened so fast--the hushing sounds of flying sand, a rain of snapped beads, and the painful, pummeling sensation of flailing paws.

Devika was rolled onto her side, and in the split seconds that the event took place, she was able to catch a glimpse of a flying lion, followed by her demolished necklace.

So surprised and confused, she couldn't decide quickly enough whether she wanted to curse or cry out, and so she only managed to grunt loudly, "UR--!!"

After it was all over, she stood and observed the situation. A male lion, near her size, had tripped over her (HOW, she couldn't say), destroyed her necklace in the process, bruised her muscles, and was now busy eating sand.

What the hell.

"HEY!" she shouted where she stood. But she couldn't figure out what else she was supposed to say after that.
