I see you made it here alive. Good for you. You realize of course that those things are always out there. They never quit coming. I can't explain it. Why is it that the dead just won't stay dead. You know I heard a preacher once say, "When hell is full.....the dead will walk the earth." Seems like that day has finally arrived. Well, guess maybe i should shut my mouth so you can get a word in edgewise. So....what about you? What do you think?

User Image"I....don't know...."

Until now, Rella can't believe that this is really happening. Seems like she's been falling from a deep slumber. Couple of days earlier, she recalled spending her quality time with her family in their vacation house near the lake. It was an unforgettable moment she will cherished most in her entire life. A picture of an average happy family, father, mother and her, as their only child. That's the only thing she'd hoped for... But.. Everything shattered right in front of her eyes.. This early morning, she woke up after hearing a sharp loud cry coming outside her room. Something's out there! and if she's not mistaken, that scream... it's from her mother!

Hurriedly, she leaped out from bed and reached for the door. As soon as she peeked from the opening, there! right in front of her eyes.. A big strange man devouring her parents' bodies.. Her body starts to shiver in horror for this man wasn't just a cannibal, but.. a living corpse.. A zombie!

The zombie had a keen smell for warm blooded humans, it suddenly stopped from what it's doing and stared from where she's hiding. She have been spotted! Before it rushed to her room, Rella managed to jump out from the window and dashed her way through the dark woods.. She can't tell if the cold blooded corpse is following her.. She wouldn't like to know, it scares her a lot knowing someone is chasing after her and once captured, she would end up like her dead parents..

Rella kept running until she reached this house.. A refuge..

"Can you tell me officer? Is there anyway we could do to stop them from coming???"

User Image "Darling, I .....I really don't know. I wish I could tell that when you wake up in the morning that this will all have been just a dream, that you'll wake up in your bed in your own room and your parents will still be alive. But you and I know that you'd be fooling yourself. Truth is....this is real. It's a nightmare come to life. How long it will last? Your guess is as good as mine. This could be it for us. This could be mankind's last stand. As for stopping them....i don't think there's anything we can do. The best we can hope for is that someone finds us and figures out a solution to the problem. Until then, we stay out of sight and stay quiet. No loud noises.....that seems to bring them in. Luckily...we've got enough provisions here to last us for a little while. We'll need more later, but for now...it'll have to be enough." Pausing for a moment, the officer rubbed his weary eyes as he thought back on how he had gotten here himself.
It had all gone so horribly wrong. When everything went down, it went down quickly. One moment, he and his fellow unit were out cleaning the streets of drug dealers......the next, he was the only person alive and running for his lives from a bunch of undead crackheads and junkies. Lucky for him, he had been found by the Zombie Outbreak Response Team. Some secret military group that had been left over from the cold war. Seemed Reagan thought that the Russians were planning on using some kind of biological zombie warfare so he put together the task force to handle such things. Fortunately, the team might have been overlooked for years but thankfully their budget hadn't been cut and they were still around when the proverbial crap hit the fan. The team leader, welcomed him into the group and a day later he was out there in the thick of things cleaning up the streets again. Unfortunately, his group ran into a horde of those walking monstrosities leaving him the sole survivor and on the run once again. Finding shelter in this old house, he had waited for help....rescue....anything, when this girl seemed to appear out of nowhere. Realizing he had been lost in his own memories he looked at the young girl in front of him.
Shaking the thoughts from his head, "Sorry, bad memories. Are you hungry? There's a small supplies of canned beans and such in the pantry. It's not a 5 star restaurant meal, but when it'll fill the emptyness in your belly pretty well."

User ImageHis answer made her even frightened.. Her eyes roamed the area searching for her lost relatives, but found nothing. They were running on the same dead end.. One wrong move may risk your own life. Rella knew, there's no definite answer when this would stop..

"The only option we had is to fight for our dear lives..." her shoulders shrugged, that is the least she can do.. She doesn't even know how to hold a gun, though her father is a police officer in their hometown. Firearms are forbidden for her dainty hands to use. After a good offer from this guy, she shook her head and stare quietly from the nearest window.. "I'm not hungry... I can't eat properly in times like this.."

Rella gave out a heavy sigh while staring on an empty space, memories starts to drift once more. A trauma.. Seeing her parents being eaten by those heartless creatures made her stomach a little upset. Almost wanted to puke.

"I suppose we're stuck here for a while..."

Somehow, she felt lonely and scared at the same time..

User Image Looking at the girl, he could tell she was frightened. Reaching out his hand, he placed it gently on her shoulder. Squatting down he lowered himself to her level till they were eye to eye.
"My name is Ryan Steele. It's gonna be ok. I promise. We'll get through this. I just need you to be brave for me."
Ok...ok?..., he thought to himself, nothing was ever going to be...ok...again. They'd be lucky to make it a couple of days without dying in this house. Those....those....THINGS....would make sure that they wouldn't leave alive. Didn't matter how bad things had been in his past....today....right now....things couldn't get much worse.

The cheap alarm clock sitting on an equally cheap bedside stand sang out some obnoxious pop song from the 80's, calling Cain out of his sleep and into the world of the waking. To tell you the truth, Cain rather hated the little timekeeper for awakening him so rudely day after day, but he also understood that the only way he COULD be awakened was rudely. He had always been a deep and heave sleeper, and the added fatigue from college only amplified this attribute.

He dragged himself out of his bunk bed and silenced the screaming clock by slamming one of it's buttons with a clenched fist. He noticed that his room-mate was already up and tidying up the room, even though Cain could barely see any mess about. His room mate, who's name was Terrence looked up and smiled at him and said in a cheerful voice, "Good morning, Cain! Get ready quick, so we can get to class early! You know what they say, the early bird gets the...."

Cain didn't hear any more of his speech, because the rest of it was muffled by the now closed door of their room. He honestly didn't understand how anyone could be cheerful in the morning, but then again a lot of things he didn't understand about Terrence.....like how someone could be such a doofus and not appear to have any clue of it.

After he had taken a shower and gotten dressed, Cain headed back to his dorm room to grab his backpack and Terrence to get to their classes. Ever since he had first met Terrence, the little nerd had stuck to him like glue, following him everywhere. Maybe he had some kind of presupposition that people that dorm together are supposed to be best friends or something, but whatever it was, the fact is that Terrence followed him everywhere. He couldn't say that he liked the guy, but honestly, it wasn't always bad to have someone to talk to.....even if they annoyed the heck out of you sometimes.

Cain and Terrence made their way out of the dorms and were immediately confronted by the scream of a girl somewhere nearby. Cain broke into a fast jog, with Terrence in close pursuit. A small ways up the sidewalk in the direction of the scream, in the grass there was a man kneeling in the grass by the girl and.....biting her? The man apparently noticed them approaching, because he raised his head to reveal his eyes, void of all emotion or even a soul.

Cain could definitely tell that whoever....or whatever this man was, he was not normal and was dangerous. He walked cautiously up to the pair, and when the man began to rise Cain gave a smashing blow to it's temple with the toe of his shoe. The man tumbled over, then began to rise once again, all the time with it's empty eyes focused on Cain. He gave it another kick, this time shattering it's skull, and it moved no more.

He then leaned over the girl that had been attacked, examining her. From the looks of it, she didn't have much more time on this earth. He gently smoothed her tangled hair as he asked her, "Can you tell me what exactly WAS that? It looked human, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't."The girl's eyes, which had been closed till now, fluttered open and she focused them on Cain's face with some difficulty. "They're.....dead. I mean...ungh....undead."

Cain was stunned. "You mean like zombies? How is that even possible?" Then, he remembered he was talking to a dying girl, and that she probably wouldn't be able to answer his question even if she was completely conscious. The girl winced from the pain, then closed her eyes again. Slowly, she said, "Don't......get bit...." Then, her breathing stopped, and Cain stood up from his kneeling position.

Terrence, who was obviously mortified by the scene he had just watched, said in a shaky voice, "Is......is she d-d-dead?" Cain looked up from her body. "Yeah, she's dead all right. However, what I'm more worried about is what she told me.....about the zombies. If this is really true, and that guy over there confirms that it is, then we've got a problem on our hands....a serious problem."

User ImageShe nodded as a courteous respond. Felt a warm hand over her shoulder somehow feel security for Rella. "I'm.." she paused for a while. Does she have to give her full name to this stranger? though he really is an officer, some people are not to be trusted. But.. today's situation is different, she can't trust no one else but him. "I'm.. Diorella Cross..." while her eyes swoon away from those stare of his..

He can't tell her to be brave because Officer Ryan doesn't have any ideas what she'd been through before reaching this safehouse.. Rella focused herself watching the other people coming in the said refuge for shelter. Like her, a survivor as well.. "My parents are dead... I don't know what to do... Easy for you to say.. You don't have any idea what I've been through.." she sighed and gently took a few steps towards the sofa and sat there for a while.. She held onto her sketchpad and shed her tears..

Well THAT could have went better...he thought. Rising to his feet, he heard his knees pop. Getting to old for this...maybe walking right out into the middle of those monsters would be better. No.....that's crazy, thinking those kinds of things. That's one thing that he wasn't....crazy. He'd been called lots of things over the years...friend, husband, father.....but crazy wasn't one of them. Those days were so long ago...yet it seemed like just yesterday. The trip to Hawaii...watching his wife and kids playing on the beach. Drinking beer with his friend Steve down at O'Bryan's pub. The joy of seeing his 2 children being born. Those were the thoughts to hang onto.....those were what kept you sane....kept you going in times like these. That and the HOPE, that somewhere out there....they were still alive. Somehow they had avoided all this crazyness here in the city. That they were safe. He had to hold on to these thoughts and pray that they were ok. He knew in his heart that he would see them again....but until then, he knew he had to do his job....and right now, that entailed protecting this girl that got dropped into his life. How he was supposed to do that? He didn't have a clue. What he did know was that he had to do....something. He turned to look at her seated on the couch, his eyes burning with determination. He knew that he had to keep them both safe till the time to move comes. When it does.....she needs to be ready, he thought.

Terrence began fiddling with his fingers, and looking nervously around. "So....what.....what are we going to do now, Cain?" His eyes told of fright and uncertainty. Cain stood there for a second, looking up at the sky as if searching for answers. Then, his ears caught the sound of sirens going off all around them; the far away sounds of police, ambulance and firetruck sirens. He wondered that he hadn't heard them before now.

"Hmm, well the best thing I can think of for now is to grab some kind of weapon and get out of here. There's too many people on campus if a zombie outbreak were to happen here. We'd just get sucked into the whole mess." Terrence whimpered, "But..but Cain! We couldn't just leave everyone here to fend for themselves, could we? What about that girl...." He took a quick glance at what used to be one of their fellow classmates.

Cain nodded his head in agreement. "Good thinking Terry. We can't just leave our classmates and teachers here to die. First thing to do is to concentrate and warn everyone on campus that we can find, and try to find them a safe place to sit tight for the time being. Probably somewhere in the dorms would be best. Then, we'll have to find some way to transport all of them. Most likely, we'll have to get either a truck or a bus. A van would be way too small." Terrence nodded meekly, and Cain just gritted his teeth. This was going to be a job, no matter how you looked at it. Of course, he didn't say this to Terrence, but they would also have to decide on a place to take all of the people they collected once they were on the road. However, Cain was confidant that there would be some sort of safe-haven that someone had built somewhere along that way. He just hoped he was right.

The pair went back up into their dorm room and each picked up a weapon; Cain a bat, and Terrence his pocket knife. Terrence, upon showing his weapon of choice to his partner, was made to go back and grab Cain's other bat. Cain only played ball occasionally for fun, but now the bats would serve a much more useful purpose; a purpose never intended for them by their manufacturers.

The duo searched every floor in the dorms, searching out survivors and killing off any zombies they strayed upon. After they had searched the dorms, they made a cautious sweep of the campus, watching out for any zombies out of sight. Eventually, they had a group of roughly 30 people clustered together in one of the dorm's hallways. Cain stepped forward and addressed the shivering group of people, "Everyone, stay calm and composed. Do NOT open these doors under any circumstances, unless they give the knock that I showed you. I repeat, do NOT open these doors, or there is a very good chance you could all be killed. Stay here until I get back, and I promise that I will do my very best to keep every one of you alive. I'll only be a little while. Come on, Terrence." he turned away from the huddled little group and walked out the two doors, hearing them shut with a resounding slam. Now, they just had to find a way to get them out of this blasted place.

Ava Stark

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Ava sat on the living room floor, TV blaring. It was difficult to work on Calculus with the Doodlebops singing about getting on a bus, but she managed. You don't need to stay in the dorms, they said. She thought. No, it's much cheaper to live at home, they said. She inwardly rolled her eyes. With 4 year old Lily belting out the songs by heart, it was a few shades shy of unendurable. Finally, she gave up. "Probably gonna fail anyway." She muttered. Just as she was about to go get something to eat, the door flew open. She looked up to see Ethan, older than her by a year, standing in the doorway. He looked absolutely terrified.

"Where's dad's machete?" He asked. Their father was a bit of an enthusiast when it came to Africa, so they had an array of strange articles around their house. "The den, why?" She asked. He nodded and rushed upstairs. He came back down with a backpack and the blade in hand. He threw the backpack at her. "Fill this with all the food you can get your hands on. Lily, stay close to her." Ava grabbed the bag and looked at him. "Stay with me? Why? She's just as fine with you." Ethan shook his head, looking grim. Before Ava could ask why. He lifted his sleeve. Underneath was a vicious looking bite mark. "Remember that crazy televangelist talking about that new virus?" Ava's heart nearly stopped. "We have to get mom and dad." Ethan again shook his head. "They were with me when this horde hit. I don't know if they're even alive." His voice was thick. "Look, I don't know how much time I have but I can't be around you two when my time's up. There's a safe house about 50 miles east of here. You'll be safe there." With a hug for Ava and a kiss on the cheek for Lily, he disappeared. The machete was left on the kitchen counter.

Even with tears rolling down her cheeks, Ava got to work. She filled the backpack with food, then got a tote bag for clothes, packing warm things. She grabbed the emergency cash hidden under the floorboard in their parent's room, pausing for one moment to shudder at what must have become of them. "C'mon Lily." She said, grabbing the little girl's hand. "But...but I wanna go with Ethan." Lily said. She pulled on Ava's hand. "No." Ava replied. She towed her out to the car, putting her in the booster seat in the back. Just as she was closing the door, she heard a groaning. She froze for a moment. He couldn't have turned that fast. She thought, turning around. A decrepit figure shuffled into view. Not Ethan. Rather the elderly man from next door. He stared at her with unseeing eyes, moaning loudly. Ava threw open the door and jumped in. Without buckling, she pulled out of the driveway and sped down the road.

For a while Lily whined. She asked questions about their parents, about Ethan. None of which Ava wanted to answer. Finally, exhausted from the events, Lily drifted off to sleep. Ava kept driving, not even sure where the safe house was. Most of the houses she drove past were turning into dumps. How did I miss this? She thought. Or did it really happen this fast? Finally, she noticed a driveway hidden in the brush of a bit of woods. It was covered in garbage and other foul smelling things. Only it was in two giant heaps on either side of the actual drive. To cover the smell of humans. She thought. It was as good a guess as any. She pulled down it, driving until she came to a large white house. There was a police car out front. Bingo.

Ava got out of the car, grabbed her bags, and began rousing Lily. The little girl rubbed her eyes and glanced at the house. Almost immediately, she began whining. "I wanna go home." She sniffled. At first, Ava was annoyed. Didn't she understand what was going on? It was then that it hit her. Lily could hardly read, let alone understand what zombies were or what they meant. She must have been so confused and frightened. Ava hugged her tightly. "This is our home for now." Lily sniffed again, but hopped out of the car. With one bag across her back, one over her shoulder, the machete in one hand and Lily's hand in the other. Ava walked to the door. Please be the safe house. She thought. She knocked on the door timidly. Quiet as it was, it seemed to ring in the silence around them.

Are you coming to get me?......

User ImageRella couldn't tell how long she's been in that position. Finally, she gave out a heavy sigh then dried her tears using the back of her palm and rose from her seat. Somehow, crying made her release her heart's painful burden achieved from yesterday's tragic event.

"I think I need to get some fresh air outside..." She grabbed her sketchpad and bag from the sofa and slung it snugly on her slender body. Rella didn't wait for Uncle Ryan's response, (well.. it would be comfortable if she could really call him like that) she turned around and make her way through the other survivors, walking in a slow pace, one by one she tried to examine each face hoping she could bump to one of her relatives or a common friend she knew.. But then again, her hopes went down. All were unfamiliar faces and none of them even knew her..

Before she went through the lobby, one of the response team officer called her attention. "Miss, if you're planning to go outside, you are allowed to visit the garden, barn and other facilities near this yard. Beyond that, we're forbidding you to cross the bridge near the lake. A report just went to us that a zombie was seen there lurking for warm souls..Just a piece of advice, if you still want to live. Never go beyond that place.. Understand?" An armored man merged out from the cabin, and held her a small gun for protection. She was instructed to keep the said weapon for her safety.

To be honest, she's not capable of using a deadly weapon and even steal anyone's life. Back at home, she recalled herself screaming and freaking every time she saw a flying cockroach across her room. Her dad took responsible for killing those creepy insects she hate most!.. She can't even afford to kill that pest much more with those cold ghouls.

Like she said, this is a different situation, they are not dealing with humans anymore, instead a flesh eating creatures looking for another victim and heck! that wouldn't be her! Rella nodded and hold unto the small gun as she placed it inside her bag.. After a few minutes, undecided.. She finally settled not to go outside but stay in the house lobby..

Soon as she reached the lounge, Rella sat against the soft couch lifting her feet up. Until she finally settle herself seated and leaned her back against the armrest. Bending her legs near her chest, once more she held her sketchpad and placed it against her slim legs while fastening her pencil. It's been three weeks, she requested for a vacation permission from the dean. Supposedly, by tomorrow she'll be back at school.. But.. that can't happen anymore.. She doesn't have any ideas if the school she's been studying to had already infested by those stupid zombies. Somehow, she missed her friends and classmates and prayed for their safety.

Rella start to draw on her pad, she had someone in mind.. Someone she used to know.. While the lead slide through the rough paper, she couldn't helped but wonder.. Does her friends knew about this place? are they trying to look for a safe refuge and defend their own lives?.. She hope so..

One glance from the nearby painting from the reception hall made her realize she made a huge mistake in her life.. While her parents are still alive, Rella wasn't been able to tell how much she loved them.. Now, they're gone.. How could she supposed to reach and say how much she missed them. Soon enough, she settled her pencil and gently brush some strayed marks on the portrait..

A familiar face seen on the finished drawing.. Her sad eyes gleamed as she stare deeply to the image's dark eyes.. "Where are you Cain?.. I hope your okay.. Somehow, I managed to run from the abyss just to stay alive..How about you? I hope you're safe out there. I don't know what to do... I was just hoping.... I could see you once more..." she murmured as if she's talking with a real person. Rella made herself a portrait of a man she knew.. A good classmate, friend and someone she look up to.. Once more, she regret not telling this guy how much he means to her.. A picture of this guy named Cain, whom she had a huge crush on..

If only he could be here, she knew.. He would possibly tell her to take a grip! but... no.. she couldn't tell if he was able to survive this big infestation. Hence, deep inside her heart.. Something's telling her there's someone out there alive and looking for her any minute from now.. While preoccuppied on her own thoughts, a sudden knock was heard outside from the front door. Gently, she left her pad and pencil on the sofa and headed towards the wooden door.. Recalled what the officer had said earlier, her hand tried to search for the small gun given to her and peek on a small rounded hole on the wood..

Rella saw a woman with a child beyond and inspected if they're one of them or not.. Seems like they're normal and uninfected. She reached for the knob and opened the door to welcome their guests.. "Hi.. You must be one of the survivors as I am.." she smiled.. Her greeting have frightned the little child.. She knelt and smiled at the cute girl.. "Hello.. There's nothing to be afraid of little one.. I'm Rella.." once more her hand reach something inside her bag, held out a piece of lollipop and offered to the small girl.. "What's your name?.. Is she your big sister?" her eyes flew to the woman she's with..

Finding a vehicle was the easy part....but finding and retrieving the key was the hard part. Cain and Terrence had stumbled upon a U-Haul rental place, but neither of them had anticipated how difficult it would be to nab one of the keys. After much effort and time, the two managed to find and open the safe holding the keys to all of the vehicles parked outside. Each of them grabbed a truck, and in minutes they were back at the college and loading the survivors in.

The drive to the closest town was roughly three hours, but they would at least start there in their search for someplace safe. Also, the town they had just left was out in the woods a bit, at least when compared to other cities close by. The town they were headed for now was much closer to other towns, so if it didn't have anywhere safe, it would be easy to jump to another town in their search.

After what seemed like forever, they came to a town that didn't seem quite as over-run by the undead as the others had. You could still see a good number lurking in the shadows, and a few followed them a short distance on the road, but it was nothing compared to some towns they'd seen. Then, Cain saw it; a bridge leading over a creek with a house on the other side. What excited him most about the scene was the fact that the house had dim light emanating from it's half boarded-up windows.

The two trucks were driven over the bridge carefully, then parked nearby. The few passengers were timid at first, but as soon as one or two of them had made the leap of faith to walk up to the house, the rest joined them, and soon a little mob was milling around the outside of the door. When both of the little U-Haul trucks had been emptied of their live cargo, Cain and Terrence joined them from the back. As he made his way to the front of the little group of people, Cain was sincerely hoping that these people, whoever they were, would be hospitable to 30-ish people looking for a place to sleep.

She earned instant brownie points when she knelt down to speak to Lily. Lily grabbed Ava's leg more tightly, but loosened when she saw the candy. Still, she reached out timidly to grab it. She'd never been one to openly converse with those outside of family, but it seemed especially bad at the moment.

"I'm Ava." The older girl said. "This is Lily, my sister." Lily nodded her assent. "Can we come in? These bags weigh a ton." She grimaced, pulling the tote farther up on her shoulder. Just as she was about to enter, she heard a noise behind her. She panicked for a moment, till she realized it was the sound of an engine at some distance. Her eyes widened when she saw a large group of people walking out. "Oh, my." She muttered. How were they going to house everyone? Lily grabbed her hand, squeezing as tightly as her small hands would allow. "It'll be okay." She said to the girl. "They won't hurt you."
