It had been a long, slow watch. After last night, when Zhac and his fellow handlers had gathered in the lower caverns of the weyr and heatedly discussed the weyrwoman’s murder and fate of the weyr, he was glad for the silence. Perfect, pristine silence, with only Zhask’s deep breathing to stall back the bitterest loneliness that rode on the edge of that quiet hush. With his watch just ending, Zhac would have normally returned to his quarters and buried himself in paperwork or exercising with his wher until dawn came, but last night, as the meeting had ended, he’d asked if Lynd wanted to put on an extra patrol. It would do her young wher good to work with another of her kind, and it wasn’t until now, as he leaned against a wall at the appointed meeting place, that his memory reminded him that Lynd wasn’t exactly an unattractive woman. His chest lifted and fell in a silent sigh of disbelief at himself. Any mental reprimands were forestalled, however, by Zhask. The gold, who had settled down beside him and started carefully nibbling at an itchy spot on her flank, suddenly looked pointedly down the hallway and snapped her beak once. Warning, someone comes. Her beak snapped again Two?
Zhac hummed a base note at her, expecting it would be Lynd and Lyndsk, and the wher’s posture relaxed, though she continued to stare down the hall.

Lyndsk was suitably excited to be going out on patrol, the young wher thus far had been relegated to lessons and brief trips outside to acclimate her to being around others the thought of going out on an actual patrol had the green practically prancing in excitement, eyes whirling and excited clicks announcing their arrival long before Lynd actually got within sight of Zhac and his gold.
"You better behave yourself" She told the green Wher at her side who merely crooned a reply and flicked her tail. Well at least with a gold Lyndsk was less likely to get into trouble Lynd told herself, while the little green might try to boss about a blue or fellow green she had the sense to be respectful to the higher colors...so far at least.
In any case they would soon find out and it would be nice to spend some time with one of the more experienced handlers here at Benden, sure they had spoken to most of them a time or two during lessons but there was a great deal of difference between listening to someone drone on about something and then actually seeing it in action. "Hey" She greeted Zhac as they approached "I hope we didn't keep you waiting to long"

“No,” he lied aptly, returning a slighter and softer version of Lynd’s smile back. His relief had come early and he had actually been waiting for several minutes, but he hadn’t minded the wait. There was no point in explaining all that though. “How have you two been getting along?” he asked, looking fondly at the tiny wher.
By way of introduction, Zhask flared her stubby wings (one of which possessively thumped against her handler) and arched her neck vainly while giving a croon of welcome. She had, apparently, no concern for Lynd, and kept her whirling green eyes on the green hatchling.
