Essence was down and sick of drama in the family. Even though she did not spend much time at home anymore she could not help but feel a little abandoned, she never imagined her parents splitting up.. So to get her mind off of everything she went to visit the one person who could always paint a smile on her face. The one person who she could turn to when everyone else had turned their backs to her.
The young, mint coloured mare trotted through the valley, wavy hair bouncing with her small frame. Being half flutter meant she had always been tiny, yet she insisted that she had grown at least a few inches over the last few months, it was just everyone else seemed to be growing a lot more. She remembered when she was little, her and the blue stallion used to be able to look each other in the eye, now he was always looking down at her. That just highlighted how much they had changed, she was no longer a little filly, and he was no longer a colt. He was now a very handsome young stallion and she was his preppy and quirky best friend.
Even though her cousin and aunt insisted they were more, she did not mind but she hated it when Rosie suggested things like that in front of him. She was such a wind up merchant.
The blue eyes mare finally came to their old playing grounds, golden beads reflecting the rays of the sun and making them sparkle. She knew that he was here, she could feel it. "Hello? Come out, come out, where ever you are." She called, spinning her head in all directions, making her hair crack like a whip behind her, her wings were fluttering playfully and she could not help but giggle just a little. Even though she was not feeling herself the least she could do was try and keep her chin up.
She did not know why she always came running to him, when she was a child she was pretty much his stalker, it might have gotten too much and she realized that now. She tried to now suffocate him, but she was a clingy person and she needed him, maybe a little more than he needed her.

Vivace was in hiding. He couldn't exactly pin point when or why it had started but he had a vague idea. There had been an attack. Skinwalkers. Phala had been pretty torn up as had Bari, his mom. At the same time another winged mare had entered the herd. She hadn't left. Now she insisted on combative training for anyone who could learn. Not his idea of a good time.
As swift as a summer breeze he had snuck away from the rest of the herd and he only intended to go back when it was too dark for training. Or perhaps when enough time had passed that the mare would forget that she had approached him about it in the first place. A week would cover that, right?
Several hours had passed since he had wandered off and he found himself standing in an area that was both familiar and yet somewhat more blue than he remembered. He paused in his step and looked around before shaking his forelocks out of his head. "That clears that up." He said to himself with a grin. As pretty as long hair was it was quite troublesome at times. The fact that he was beginning to forget it was there was even more troublesome: he was getting used to being half-blinded by it.
As he was musing over his adjustment to his ungodly amount of hair his ears twitched. There was a voice on the wind. He knew that voice. "It's her hair and her eyes today," he began, singing his response seemed like the best way to announce his presence to his friend. "That just simply take me away." As he sand he trotted towards the mare with a wide smile on his face.
"Hello again, Essence." He practically chirped. "How are you this lovely day?"

She heard his voice and her heart flew, she was so happy he was around. He used to sing to her all the time and she loved it, every time he did he enchanted her more and more, he was always amazing, always so perfect in her eyes. "I did not know you found me so attractive my dear friend, If I had known that you did I would have used it to my advantage a long time ago." She smiled and looked over at him, she approached and tilted her head back and forth, she fluttered her eyelashes and made all the cute little noises a girl of her age did when she wanted to get a guys attention.
Out of all of the women in her family Essence was the most playful, her auntie was immature and excitable, her other auntie was a mad romantic. However Essence was the flirt and the only true girly girl. She seemed to have everyone wrapped around her little finger, they all knew she was no angel, but she was so innocent with it that very few minded.
When he asked her how she was she tried to smile. "I am..." She began before looking into his eyes and realizing that he could not lie. Not to him. "I am, I am not too good. I am sorry, but. My mum and dad have broken up. Its been, getting me down." She sighed and then looked to the side, it was not often that she felt down and even less that she dare to show it to anyone. She never thought she would feel this way, if she had to deal with these emotions, she felt... alone. Like her perfect family had fallen apart an she was left to pick up the pieces. She wondered if she ever would see him again...
"I need my best friend to cheer me up, work your magic on me, like you always do." She smiled and wondered over to him, resting her head on his shoulder and taking in his sent, it was so familiar and worm. "Can you sing me a song? and stay here with me, just for a little while..." She asked, whispering in his ear and closing her eyes. It was just enough being close to him, it already made her feel so much better. They had such a odd relationship, they were best friends, rivals, teachers, playmates and sometimes it felt like they had more than that. He was hers and that was the end of it, he was hers and she was his. She knew he would be there with her at the end of time and he would make her smile.

The sudden shift in the mood came from out of nowhere to Vivace. She had seemed fine only seconds ago, playing around like she always had. He had been hoping that they would just play together like usual, torment some goats, nick some hats, those sorts of things. This was anything but usual. This was serious. He didn't do serious. But he couldn't have missed the seriousness of it if he had tried and it would be even harder to ignore.
He sighed back in response before rubbing his muzzle against her gently. As much as he hated being serious it wasn't like he could just brush off his best friend. If she needed him then it was up to him to be there. It was almost like he was duty bound.
"I think I know just the song." He said taking in a deep breath as he straightened. He shut his eyes and let the words and music flow into him as they always had. Song was his birth right and he would make it count.
"Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry...You don't know how lovely you are. I had to find you, tell you I need you and tell you I set you apart. Tell me your secrets, and ask me your questions. Oh let's go back to the start." He paused for a moment to look down at his friend. He could barely imagine what she was going through. His parents had been together for three batches of kids after all.
He frowned, took in more air and continued, "Nobody said it was easy...It's such a shame for us to part. Nobody said it was easy. No one ever said it would be this hard. Oh take me back to the start." Perhaps it wasn't one of his favorite songs, but it had the meaning that seemed appropriate.

Essence closed her eyes and leaned on him like a crutch, feeling his breathe and his words pull her into an embrace, she always loved to hear him sing, it reminded her of a time where everything was simple, where everything was easy. She sighed and then when his voice withered and faded he opened her eyed, backing up a little to look up at him. "You know Viv, I do not know what I would do without you, you are one of the most important people in my life and I never want you to leave it." She knew she still had him, even if her world felt like it was falling apart she would always have her best friend.
She took in another deep breathe and then smiled softly at him, she knew that he hated all this serious stuff, so now that she had got it off of her chest she thought it was a good time to resort to their regular goofiness. "Don't let that get to that big head of yours though, I do not want you getting full of yourself song bird." She smiled sticking out her tongue and flicking her hair so it was thrown out of her eyes.
She paused for a moment and tilted her head wondering about games they could play, and then she remembered. "Hey, do you still have that hat? If I remember right I said I would give you something if you got me it right? Any requests? Any wishes?" She asked with a small smile, that ground stallion was so mad at them, even madder than the goat was. If they were to die tomorrow she could name at least two people would be happy and those two were probably the ones who had killed them in the first place.
Never the less a deal was a deal and she owned her friend a prize, though she had no idea what she was going to give him.

Vivace had always believe that music had some sort of power over people and now that the atmosphere was still heavy he was wondering if perhaps he should have picked a different song. Something cheerful to awaken positive emotions and push the negative feelings back into the dark depths of some mental cavern. Something to help escape the serious. "I'm not going anywhere." He said slowly scuffing at the ground with a hoof looking ridiculously like an overgrown foal. If anyone should worry about people vanishing it was him, Essence was the one that had vanished for training that time after all. Who knew when that would happen again.
When she started joking around relief swept over him like a spring breeze. Thank the spirits for jokes. They made the world a much more enjoyable place. "Aaaah, but it's a little late for that, Essence~" He joked right back tossing his head. "My head's so swollen with ego that it's all that's left of me~ Don't you see it?"
He grinned then blinked as the conversation took another turn. Hat. Hat? What hat was this? "Uhhh..." For a moment his brain was having difficulty connecting and then it finally hit him. "Oh! The hat! Yeah I've got it still." Without another moment of hesitation he darted over to a cluster of bushed and stuck his head into them. After a minute of fishing he straightened up with a big, black top hat with ridiculous decorations on it. Roses, feathers, cards? It was too much for a hat. With a proud grin he trotted back before dropping the hat on Essence's head.
"My request, is that the next time we see that guy...you grab his silly cane to go with the stupid hat!"
