"Merry ways, many days, s'long as the sweet wind stays, see the color of the rays upon mah eyes... " It wasn't often that Dangle sang, as he mostly preferred quiet thinking. But, today was a particularly sweet day, and he couldn't help but raise his voice and share his good mood with the world. Well, at least with the patch of trees and brush and muck around his favorite log, anyways. And that's where he was perched on this fine morning, belly-down on his log with all four legs splayed out over the sides in a ridiculous manner, and his little buddy Stumpy stretched out over the back of his neck. The poor watersnake had to endure all manner of vibrations as Dangle continued his impromptu song.
"But should she begin to fade, dahlin' tears'll come mah way, if'n sweet winds drift away out of mah life..." It was a song that he crafted on the spot, and it made very little sense, but it sounded beautiful to him and that was all that mattered. Poor Stumpy buried his head into Dangle's fur to try and get away from the sound.

"A cheery little tune," said a soft, melodic voice that came seemingly from nowhere... but in truth preceded the arrival of a brown doe, her coloring simple and plain. Nightingale Cry made her way over to the log, amusement in her eyes as she studied the lump of buck that was stretched out on the log like a lump of wet seaweed. "I heard you singing and thought I would come try to find the singer."

Dangle flinched slightly as the doe first spoke, searching for the source of the sound - but as soon as he spotted her, a huge grin broke out on his face. He didn't bother rising from his spot on the log.
"Glad y'liked it!" Pure joy radiated from him, and his voice was clear and deep and tinged with happiness.
"Not that it meant nothin', but..." He studied her for a moment. What pretty colors! "...If'n it makes folks happy, s'worth singin' anything, right?" His grin grew.
"And what, ma'am, shall you do now that y'found me? Hopin' it idn't stuff moss in my mouth!" Chuckling, he closed his eyes and flicked his tail, as if making it laugh along with him.

Gale chuckled quietly, stepping closer until she was directly in front of Dangle, head tilting slightly. "I thought perhaps it best that I introduce myself to my neighbor, as I have just settled down not far from here, in that hollow tree. My name is Nightingale Cry."
The buck seemed like a nice enough fellow, and certainly there were far worse kin she could end up with as neighbors. Really, Gale was inclined to think she'd lucked out in picking the spot she had.

"Good t'meet ya, Nightingale Cry." Dangle stayed sprawled out in his spot, but he lifted his head all the way and directed his grin at the doe in front of him. "I'm Dangling Vine. Y'can call me Dangle."
Stumpy's tongue flicked against Dangle's ear, then slithered to his hind end to settle back down. Dangle chuckled.
"That there's Stump-Nose." The buck jerked his head towards a nearby stump that seemed to be decently-kept. "My sleepin' spot s'there, but I like it on this log durin' the day. Better sunlight."
Dangle was pleased. His new neighbor seemed quite nice. "Thassa good tree y'picked! Oh! Welcome, by the way."

"Please," the doe insisted, "you may certainly call me Gale. And hello, Stump-Nose," she added to the snake. "It's truly a pleasure." Gale looked about for a moment, then found a likely-looking spot to sit, settled in front of the log so she could still easily talk to Dangle. "So is this your usual activity -- sunning yourself?"

"Yes'm, miss Gale!" Dangle watched as the doe settled down, and made a mental note to stick something comfortable there for future visitors to rest on. "I decorate from time t'time, or hunt wit' Stumpy, he's real good at catchin' lil critters. But normally I rest here'n scrounge up grub."
He lifted his head and caught some sunlight on his face. "Life's short, miss, an' I'd like t'spend mine watchin' the world go by. Ain't nothin' more pleasant than a warm spot and good thoughts."
Blinking, he looked at her once more, tilting his head to one side. "What d'you do wit' yourself most days? If y'need good sunning spots, I c'n show ya a few!"

Gale's amusement grew more pronounced. "I sing a lot," she explained, pinning a look on him that invited Dangle to share in her merriment. "I listen to the birds and learn their songs, and there are some birds out there now who have learned simple tunes from me in turn. Aside from that, I hunt for food and try to make my home comfortable. There is, as you say, a certain pleasantness to watching the world go by for a bit."

Dangle grinned. He was liking this doe more and more. "You sure know how t'live life then!" He paused for a moment.
"Y'ever thought 'bout gettin' yerself a songbird?" He perked his ears up, as if he had stumbled upon some kind of revelation. "Oh! T'could help y'find things fer yer home! Shinies an' such! And y'could teach it t'sing!"
Oh yes, Dangle was quite pleased with himself for his suggestion. He puffed out his chest. Stumpy snorted.

"I have, indeed, thought about it," Gale confirmed, holding back her laughter. "Now I am just waiting for the right one to come along. I'd like to have an entire flock of them, to be honest." A whole flock, all singing harmony with her... The very idea made Gale giddy.

"That'd be fantastic!" The lazy buck even lifted off his log a bit as he spoke - clearly he was excited for his new friend, and pleased that his suggestion had coincided with her own thoughts.
"I wouln't mind learnin' some new songs m'self.... I tend t'make mine up as I go." Dangle settled back down on the log, then beamed at Gale. "If'n you get bored one day, would y'teach me one?"

Gale grinned, a sparkle in her dark eyes. "Certainly I would. I love teaching songs to kin and birds alike. Have you heard the song about the mockingbird and the buck?"

"I haven't!" He exclaimed, perking back up and tilting his ears towards Gale. His brows raised, and his eyes lit up. "I'd love t'hear it!"
Stumpy groaned, as if bracing himself. He slithered onto the back of the log and let his head and neck drape over the end, trying to distance himself from the noise.
