Kaie Porter blinked, stirring lazily in his down-comforter as he stifled a yawn. He peeked one eye open, and sighed. Judging by the light coming through the stain-glass window, it was dawn.

Rolling out of bed with the ease of long practice, he staggered slightly as his feet, encased in black knee-high socks, hit the polished wood floor. He frowned and peered down at his toes, wiggling them ponderously as he thought back to the previous night.
Ah, of course... he'd been up late reading again. One glance at his desk confirmed that he had properly taken care of his precious books before falling (gracelessly, most likely) into bed. He hadn't managed to change into his pajamas though... he peered at the somber black-silk outfit where it hung, essentially unused, in his closet. Maybe if it were placed in between his desk and bed... no, he'd just trip over it.

Shaking his head to clear the incessant wanderings of his hazy morning thought process, he peered out the window again. The light was partially muted, though he had still recognized it as dawn... ah, morning fog!

He smiled to himself as his movements became more energetic. A quick breakfast (one apple and a slice of cheese- quick, clean, easy to eat) and a cup of tea and he was strolling out the door, fully clothed. His parasol slung over his right shoulder, black glasses firmly fixed on his nose, he wiggled his fingers in their thick black gloves and smiled to himself. He turned right at the gate, and followed his usual path along the quiet street.
Fog allowed him to travel further on his morning walks; the light didn't bother him as much as typical early-morning sunlight did.

He nodded politely to the few neighbors he passed at this hour, accentuating the movement with a slight dip at the waist since his covered eyes were hard to read.

He turned down a heavily-trodden dirt path, carefully re-assuring himself that the dirt was worth it. (After all, he could brush it off before he entered the house, and the slight condensation from the early fog wasn't too high a price to pay for the slightly-less-intense-sun [despite that the particles made the light a brilliant white due to scattered particles reflecting...]) ... he calmed his mind, focusing on enjoying the new day.

The tall trees stood proudly along the path, secure in the fact that the amiable inhabitants of the quaint little town would not chop them down on a whim. Kaie peeked upwards, admiring their emerald leaves for as long as he was able before ducking back beneath the shielding black-lace parasol.

His steps faltered as his gaze fell upon a pale elven creature standing to the right of a tiny sapling. The tall man recovered from his surprise quickly, the only sign being a slightly startled look in his widened eyes as he issued the proper bow of a man greeting a fellow... male.
He scrolled through the careful list of his acquaintances, and found that he did not know how to address this being.

"Good morning, Sir." He offered an amenable smile, trusting to common courtesies to make up for his slight slip of manners. (It was rude to stare, or display any negative emotion [among them shock and discord] upon a first meeting.) "I apologize if I have intruded."

The stranger gave a sly smile, and did not respond. Delicate, uncovered fingers stroked the tender sapling as his piercing eyes locked with those of the heavily-clothed man.

Kaie waited, uncertain of how to respond.

"Voren, or Sir Voren if you please... it's hard to intrude upon lands that belong to no man, don't you agree?."

Kaie blinked, then smiled. A first name? It was not normally combined with Sir, but he supposed he deserved the slightly wry comment after his firm cling to protocol. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Sir Voren." The words rolled off his tongue as they had on so many occasions, though this was one of those rare times when he truly, deeply meant it.
Sir Voren was right; these were public lands. However, he had been referring more to an intrusion upon the tender musings of an early-morning walk, not trespassing upon private lands... Although, something about the way this elven man was stroking that little sapling suggested ownership if not reverence.
Come to think of it... there were not many sapling amongst this elderly stand of thick-trunked trees...

Kaie noticed Sir Voren's eyes sparkling with mirth. He tilted his head, though he was of course glad to provide some amusement... that is, presuming he was the cause.

"Not all treasures glitter in polished gold." He paused, as if to let his words sink in, then extended one of those delicate long-fingered hands and removed a secure pouch from his travel-belt. He stroked the pouch, in an unnervingly similar manner to the way he had been caressing the sapling only moments before.

"You speak truth." Some of his favorite books were bound in leather, though he did appreciate the quiet dignity of gold-engraved titles.

Sir Voren moved with quiet grace, seeming to stride without leaving any trace of his passing. "Cherish nature's gifts." With that comment, both cryptic and astonishingly abrupt at once, he turned and seemed to vanish into the stand of trees.

Kaie stared after the man for a moment longer, then peeked down at his left hand... his head jerked back, startled.
He hadn't remembered accepting the pouch....
He glanced back up to where the elf had vanished. "A good day to you... Sir Voren." He whispered, puzzled by this encounter.

Warmth seeped into his veins, seeming to radiate from... his palm.
He slowly... oh, so slowly... looked down, as if expecting a creature to burst out at him... despite that the unexpected warmth did not seem vicious.

It seemed that foggy mornings were a bit more... auspicious... than he had ever realized.

He turned and made his way slowly home, clutching the pouch to his breast as he carefully analyzed the conversation. Somehow he didn't think this was one of those times it's best to leave the strange package on the ground, turn and ignore the free-trader/pirate's trouble-mongering... Sir Voren gave off the feeling of having been everywhere, a worldly traveler who could pass through heavily-lit areas completely unseen. But his sly smile did not hold malice... or, so Kaie thought. It was not good to jump to conclusions, but the feeling....

His fingers tightened around the pouch that had been glowing with steady warmth since he had brought it close to his heart.

He didn't want to expose that warmth to the moisture-ridden air, and so would wait until he was back inside, safe at his desk (though, of course, even a homestead is never truly safe, only possessing an illusion of safety wrought by comfort and care...)

... and discover nature's universal treasure.
