Astra had arrived back at amityville not long ago, feeling better then she had in a while. Plus a little self conscious; her new clothes really stuck out compared to her previous ones, judging from the stares she was getting from some.

But as soon as she had unpacked her stuff back into her dorm and went to see what she had missed, she had been approached by Cady whom was keen to have a fight with her. She had been shocked at first and ready to bolt, but then Cady had insisted that the match was purely 'educational'. Eventually she gave in and accepted the challenge, and now she was in the newly rebuilt gym waiting for her opponent.

When she arrived, the fairy shifted uneasily on the spot. She wasn't sure if this was a good idea or not...

for this battle we're going to roll for initiative. Each of us will roll a 20 sided die, and the one with the highest number will get to attack first.

((note: The cute chibi's posted here were generously drawn by the awesome artist known as Ravvet! Having pictures is not a requirement; we're just making this battle look super cute and awesome))

Cady made her way to the Thunderdome gym, skipping cheerfully. She'd hunted far and wide (ok, maybe not so much) to find a suitable opponent once she found out the facility had been reopened. She hadn't been in a REAL battle since she'd left her siblings behind to attend school, and she hoped she wasn't rusty.

Her opponent, Astra - a nice ghoul she'd met during the Floresctival - seemed the logical choice. Only...she looked DIFFERENT, somehow, than she had before. Cady just chalked it up to her less than stellar memory.

WHATEVER. Probably wasn't important. With a friendly wave, Cady squared off against her, taking the opposite side of the field.

Hi! I'm Cady! As Astra said, we're here to LEARN YOU SOME BATTLE MECHANICS.

In theory, anyway.

SO HOP ON THE CRAZY TRAIN AND LETS RIDE.

As mentioned before, we're both rolling for initiative! Much like other dice games involving large fire breathing lizards and prison cells we use a d20, or a 20 sided dice. The character with the highest roll will be the first to attack! You don't have to do this if you feel that ICly one character will be faster or 'have the jump on' another, but for the sake of this tutorial we're going to use it.

You may notice we're repeating a lot of info, but shut up and sit down it's out of love for learning ok? 8|

Cady's stats are a BIT different than Astra's! Cady is a Year One student, so she begins a battle with only 30 total possible HP or hit points. Hit points are the value you use to calculate how much damage your character can take! Most of you are probably familiar with this from video games.

You will also notice that Cady's normal attack abilities net less damage and are more likely to miss, as she is less experienced than Astra, who is a Year Two student. But let's see how this plays out in the field!

Astra rolled a 2, and Cady rolled a 4. Therefore, Cady goes first!

GANBATTE!...or whatever.

Cady is a Year One student. Therefore, for a normal attack round, she gets to roll 2d6 dice.

Let's see how she does!


After standing there for a few seconds, blinking, the ever impatient Cady burst into action. She didn't really want to hurt her - although battling in Halloween was, insofar as she knew, completely safe. She figured if Astra wound up waking up in bits of FEAR at the Nurses office there might be some hard feelings. Ok, that might be a slight under-exaggeration. Besides, she didn't really know what kind of voodoo the little fairy ghoul might have up her sleeve.

Cady wasn't afraid to find out. Taking the initiative, she jumped forward, sweeping out with the palm of her hand. She was careful of the claws- well, as careful as a giant spazz of a manticore could be. What were a few scratches between friends?

The blow connected, and she laid a full-palmed slap against the other ghoul. Cat fighting. If Cady were a little more clever, she might even realize that was a rather humorous double entendre. But she wasn't, and instead she was simply pleased with her assault. Maybe she wasn't so rusty after all!

Ok, let's recap what happened so far.

Cady, a Y1 student, rolled 2d6, that's two six sided dice, for a normal attack round.

In order to determine if her attack successfully hit the opponent, we subtract 6 from the total number rolled.

Her total was an 11, so 11 - 6 = 5.

In order to successfully land an attack, the value of the attack after subtracting 6 must be GREATER THAN zero. Cady has a value of 5 remaining afterward, and so her attack lands and she deals this leftover number as damage. This damage total will then be subtracted from the opponent's HP on their next turn.

Whoo hoo!

Cady's remaining HP is 30/30. Let's see what happens next round!

Waving back at her opponent, Astra watched her moved to the opposite side of the field. She prepared herself mentally, not taking much of a stance but frowning in a attempt to look...well, intimidating.

She should of spent that time doing something else. Like moving out of the way. Before she realized what had happened, Cady had came at her with one hand, and the slap had sent her small form flying upwards from the blow.

Fortunately, she was quick to cover from that assault. her wings kicking into action and allowing her to hover above Cady. Frowning at the manticore, she brought her hand across herself and then swung it as if she was about to pimp slap Cady, even if she was no where near. It soon became clear what she was doing though; from her hand appeared three leaf like shapes, which she sent flying at her opponent.

HP: 35/40
Damage: 9
Effects: None

Owww, That attack hurt! It brought Astras HP down to 35/40. But now it's time for some payback!

Now, because Astra is a Y2 student, she gets to roll a 2d8 instead of a 2d6, which means she can do more damage to Cady, whom is only a Y1 student. After subtracting 6 from that roll, we end up with 9 damage.

Cady reeled, surprised by the other ghoul's rather potent attack.

She had knives. What the jack, this ghoul could summon leafy knives of terrible doom. She felt a sudden uncharacteristic gloom settle upon her, and reflexively lifted her forearms in front of her face to fend off the next attack.

What on HALLOWEEN had she gotten herself into?

Hell's bells, Astra is one pipe hitting mother... Ahem. I hope one of the lessons you take away from this battle is how important sizing up your opponents is!

...And she seemed so nice.

Astra dealt a whopping nine damage last round, leaving Cady with a measly remaining 21 HP. Things are not looking good!

When it seems like you're in a tight spot though, you have some options! The first among these is defending. Once again, the dice you roll for defense depends on your student or hunter's year/level! In this case, as a Y1 student, Cady will roll 1d4, or one four sided dice.

The opponent then must take that value and subtract it from their attack roll on their following turn.

Astra was staring wide eyed at Cady, whom had held up her arms to cover herself against her next attack. How was this...happening?

Cady was defending? Against her?!?!.

This was foreign to her. Usually it was herself defending, running away, or getting pummeled. Not the other way around.

..Perhaps becoming a knob HAD made her stronger? Or maybe she was just using her abilities better now. Whatever the case, it gave her a surge of confidence. Again she summoned the knife-like leaves to her hands, and flung them at Cady.

Wow, I'm a lot strong then I thought, this is great!

...though I hope I didn't hurt her to much.

Now, normally I would have done 6 damage to Cady this turn, but because she is defending, I subtract her dice roll from mine to get the amount of damage done this term.

In this case, Cady rolled a 3, so I subtract 3 from my total, therefore doing 3 damage this turn

Cady winced as the leaves left scratches across her arms- better her arms than her face though!

She grimaced, moving her arms down and backing away from her opponent. It was time to Get Serious. She whipped her tail forward suddenly and...

...missed Astra completely. Huh. That, ah, did not go as planned.

Remember how I said you had options when a battle wasn't going your way?


I was lying. Ok, not really.

Besides attacking and defending, citizens of Halloween have special abilities, called FEAR abilities, that are generally specific to each character. Each FEAR skill will fall under the rules of one of nine 'categories' of FEAR (which all have their own dice mechanics), and will either be considered offensive or supportive abilities.

Cady's FEAR, called simply 'Slow Strike', falls under the category Headlights, an Offensive-type ability. The rules for this ability are simple: roll the required amount of dice (in this case, it's a 1d4 or one four sided dice), and determine if it hit based on the requirements for your character's skill level.

As Cady is a Year One student, she must roll a 4 to successfully land her FEAR attack.

...Which, she didn't. HOWEVER, HAD the attack been successful, it would have forced the opponent to skip a turn, AND the user gets an extra attack, essentially getting to go twice in a row following the successful FEAR round. That would have been really helpful. This ability is specific to the 'Headlights' type of FEAR. Each FEAR type has it's own unique ability.

It was a good thing Astra saw Cady's tail coming in time, otherwise she would of been in a fair amount of pain, judging from the looks of the stinger. As Cady had whipped it around, she had flown backwards to give herself distance between herself and the manticore.

Now...it was time for a counterattack.

It had been a long time since she had tried to use her FEAR attack, much less use it without her staff, so she was anxious to try it out and see how well she would do. She frowned, concentrating her FEAR into both of her hands, she raised them as a fog like energy drifted out of them then suddenly shot straight at Cady.

This time, her attack was dead on, and her FEAR had hit Cady directly. Oh yeah! The fairy smilied as she prepared herself to launch another attack; her opponent would be a little busy trying to figure out why everything was growing to be so much bigger then herself, when in reality it was just a illusion.

HP: 35/40
Damage: 0
Effect: Y2 'Downsize' (Headlights) used! HIT!

Luckily, Astra was able to dodge that last attack, otherwise she would have missed a turn! And since Cady had just used her FEAR ability, Astra decided to counter attack with her own FEAR ability. Which, ironically enough, is the same attack that was used on her!

...Sorta.

Both attacks are different to one another, but they fall under the same category of FEAR moves, which is the Headlights ability.

As Cady has previously said, for this ability we need to roll a 1d4 , but because Astra is a year 2 student, she needs to roll a 3 or 4 to hit.

Looking at the dice, it appears she had rolled a 4, so she is allowed to take One extra turn!.

Before we go any further, we must remember one very important thing. FEAR abilities can only be used Once per battle. Once they have been used, They can't be used again in that same battle.

This means that Astra cannot use her 'downside' attack anymore for this battle, nor can Cady use her 'slow strike' attack.

Grinning mischievously, Astra paused to make sure Cady was defiantly unable to do anything for now, before she summoned her leaf-daggers again to fly straight at Cady.

She was getting pretty good at this.

Since Cady's suffering from the effects of Astra's attack, she gets a free turn to do some nice damage.

Which she did.

Theres not to much to say here that hasn't already been said; we roll 2d8, subtract 6 from the total, and the result becomes the amount of damage dealt this turn

After she had finished her last attack, she was still amazed to see that Cady was...yup, she was still out of it.

..She wasn't trying to be mean...really, she wasn't. She flicked a few more of her knife leaves at Cady, but her aim was off this time, as they harmlessly hit the ground some ways off.

Looks like Astra missed her target this time...by a mile it seems.

...Oh well. she still pummeled Cady with her previous attacks!

After adding up the total for this roll, we end up with -4. When the total damage Equals 0 or less, we declare that a miss

And now, Astra's Headlights ability should be wearing off, so Cady finally gets a chance to do something!

The look the manticore ghoul gave Astra was a little concerned as she felt the prickle of the other student's FEAR surging over her. She rolled her shoulders and paced, out of reach, but at first felt no ill effects. Thinking that her opponent's FEAR attempt had failed, she surged forward to try and get in another blow - and then everything changed.

Her vision ran, sight tunneling and making everything appear so much larger and more distant. She had FOREVER to run to get to Astra- who had become some sort of terrifying apparition that towered over everything.

That did it. Cady felt sick- the entire gym and it's contents had grown ginormous- and then the beating continued. More of the leaf-blades hissed through the air. She got sliced up by the first round, and barely dodged the second.

She swayed as the world suddenly righted itself, and the ghoul before her stopped being some sort of terrible giant. But Cady had had enough. She backed away slowly, trying to creep toward the edge of the mat. If she could just get away, she might be able to escape further humiliation.

Oh by Jack, this is a disaster. I think it's high time I get out of here! Fortunately, just as there a rules for fighting, there are rules for escaping. When your character wants to flee from battle, you may make an attempt by rolling a d20, or 20 sided dice, just like you did for rolling initiative.

It's not all sunshine and roses though- if your opponent chooses, they can challenge this roll. The opponent's challenge roll is also a d20. If their roll is greater than yours, your flee attempt fails! But if your roll is greater, or they chose not to challenge it, you can successfully flee battle.

Let's see what move Astra makes!

Astra was feeling great, stupendous even, after whaling on Cady for the past few turns. Her leaf summon attack was much more useful then she had realized, and she was definitely going to use it more often.

Though Cady was looking a little worse for wear now, and she was acting a little...weird. Astra frowned, worried that she may had hurt her opponent a little too much. This was a exhibition match after all

"Are you okay Cady?" Astra said with a note of concern in her voice, setting down in front of the manticore and inevitably blocking Cady's escape route.

Damage: None

Uhhh..maybe I was a little too hard on Cady after all, I better check to see if she's okay.

...Why does it look like she's trying to run away?

Since Cady is trying to run away, Astra will now See if she needs some assistance Try to block her escape. As Cady has explained, we roll a 1d20 to see if her escape attempt was successful

Because we rolled a higher number, Cady is Unable to escape, and Astra gets another turn. Since Cady is trying to run away and all.

..Wow, Cady did look pretty beaten up close. "Uhh...Hold on! I'll give you a hand...just give me a sec." Astra said, then concentrated again, holding her hands together as if she was holding something.

She stood for a few moments, concentrating as hard as she could, then eventually relaxed, looking a little confused.

"Aww...It didn't work.." She was supposed to summon a fruit, but nothing had appeared. She needed to work on her ability more...

Aww...it didn't work.

Because Astra is such a kinda hearted soul (er, we think...), She was gonna heal Cady!

Wait, why is she healing her opponent?

Because shut up.

Before you guys cry foul saying she shouldn't be able to have another FEAR ability, remember that she is a Year two student, and as part of the many perks to being better then everyone else in a higher year is the chance to have a second ability. Her new ability is only at a Y1 level, because she has only just learned it.

Here, Astra is using a FEAR ability that is part of the category The Chill , which is a type of healing move that can be used on yourself or someone else

..we don't endorse healing your enemies though.

To see if the move is successful, we roll 5d4. if we roll a 3 or 4, the move is successful. Because Astra rolled a 2, her attempt Failed.

Cady wimpered a little, pitifully watching her foe as she tried to summon more things. Probably terrible things. When she felt the tingle of the ghoul's FEAR coalescing in the air again- she didn't wait to find out what it was.

She dashed around the ghoul, making for the exit and wailing.

"NO MORE TREES!!"

It seems our intrepid adventurer has, ah. Left the building. Or is trying to. Cady is rolling for another flee attempt. Hopefully this time her partner will let her get back in the kitchen escape and make Astra a sandwich recover.

And as Astra looked up to suggest that Cady should go to Nurse Cricket, she was met with a fleeing manticore who was screaming for no more trees.

...'I guess...the exhibition battle is over?" She said to no one in particular, standing there and watching the exit for a little while more.

Well...seeing as Cady has 'left the building' so to speak, it appears that Astra is the winner of this battle!

This time, instead of trying to prevent Cady from fleeing, Astra had allowed her to escape. Remember, if someone is trying to escape, the other opponent is allowed to let them do so.

And now, Astra is off to celebrate her victory!
