Though he would have preferred to remain locked into his room, working on his poetry, Eben knew that he would have to leave his room sometime. Though hunger was good inspiration for his work, eventually it became a distraction. So, with feelings of trepidation and dressed in his usual somber black, Eben slunk through the hallways like a thief.
Fortunately, it was rather dark and there were not many other students around. He had no idea where he was though and was not sure where to begin looking for food. He assumed there was a cafeteria around but he had left the map up in his drawer, buried under scraps of parchment.
He was torn between giving up the search and going hungry or, horror of horrors, finding someone to ask for help. The fierce growling of his stomach persuaded him that he should go with the latter and move as quickly as possible so he could return to his blessed solitude. As he wandered, he was sure to run into another student eventually.
He hoped.

Her dress was tattered and old. It was obviously much to big for her, and the pattern on it was quite ugly and would make even those with the worst fashion sense want to gag. The main reason Owl loved it so much was that it had large pockets, perfect for keeping her block-like camera in. She'd purchased it in the same thrift store as the dress. Her eyes were unnaturally wide today-- it seemed that she thought this would make her see better. Unfortunately it didn't. She still continued to walk into every wall that made her acquaintance. But constantly being hit by walls didn't stop her. She was on a mission. A mission to take photos of more students and put them on her wall. She'd worked out, despite her small brain, that it was easiest to take pictures of students when they were resting.
And that's why, at this time, on this day, Owl was wandering the halls. She had almost given up when she saw a glum-looking student wandering the halls, similar to her. "I take you photo!" she yelled before a blinding flash appeared. Now, this student's image was in her camera. This made Owl happy.

Eben was already tense with the anticipation and the dread of having to speak with another student, so the sudden appearance of a strangely dressed girl flashing a camera in his face was almost too much to handle.
He cringed back and had to fight the urge to flee. When he finally regained some of his composure, and had regained a somewhat normal heart rate, he turned to glare morosely at the other student. Eben didn't enjoy having his picture taken on the best of days, when he was prepared for it. His parents often made him sit for formal pictures. Now, when he was hungry and dressed in all black pajamas, he really didn't appreciate it.
"Did you have to do that? It's not really polite to jump out and take people's pictures without asking for them," he said in his normal grumpy tone.
What was with this girl anyway? He didn't recognize her at all, which made him wonder why she wanted his picture.

Owl almost had to crane her neck to look up at the boil. He was very tall. Owl frowned under her bandages for a moment. Sure, she'd taken lots of pictures of students in the past, but those were taken at the festival and open day, when Owl was not a student. She realized that this was the first student to have talked to Owl in the few days that she'd been here. She put her arms up as high as she could and started to walk in circles around the boil. This wasn't some tribal thing, she just had interesting ways of expressing her excitement. After circling him about three times, she stopped and sat down, cross legged. Her dress spilled out on the floor around her and she was silent, looking up at this... stranger. It occurred to her to reply to what he had said earlier. "I Owl. I need picture for special reason! I not ask because otherwise you not let me! I need picture. What name your?" she lifted up her hand to stroke his leg. Just because.

Eben stared at the girl with growing alarm as she began to circle around him. This certainly was not what he had expected. Granted, he should have known that he couldn't have any expectations of the other students at this strange academy, but still. He almost breathed a sigh of relief when she stopped her circling and sat down. He had wondered if she was going to begin chanting.
He listened to her response and sighed, wondering what to do. When she began to stroke his leg, Eben almost bolted but forced himself to stay put, figuring that she wasn't about to hurt him. He hoped.
"Owl? That's a strange name. I mean, nice name. I'm Ebenezer," he said, a bit grudgingly. He wasn't very fond of his name and he didn't really like giving it out either. He sighed again at her explanation. It was completely logical, if annoying. He would have said no. He couldn't begin to imagine what kind of special reason she would have for needing his picture, but he decided to let it go for the moment.
"I don't suppose you know where I can find some food," he asked warily, positive that she would have no idea and that he would just have to go hungry.

Owl picked at her dress, stopping the chain of stroking, and listened to the boil. He had a name. Owl wasn't really listening to it, but it started with an E and it was long, so she could always guess. The boil asked about food. Owl didn't eat food. WHAT A STUPID QUESTION. she thought. But it also occurred to her that she should help him so they could be friends. Yes... friends. Owl really liked friends. She had about two of them... "I know ALL about different food place. I eat food lot of times. One two hundred time a day! Come and follow, I show you food place." she whispered to him as she got up and decided to improvise a route to the 'food place'.
Owl used her lying skills to trick him. Shenanigans!
