Bilisi knew that the war was over. The hyenas were still not strong enough to take over the Pridelands.

The hyena waited quietly for her sister to return from the battlefield. Bilisi herself hadn't gone - she was not a fighter. She had been the brains of this, and even then it hadn't quite worked. However, it had satisfied her desire to see blood spill, to see families broken, and to hear the cries of those that knew what true despair was like.

The corner of her lip curled up cruely, a deep laughter emitting from her throat. No one wanted to go near her, now that she seemed to delve into as much insanity as her dear, dear twin.

Zimwi was furious. There was no better word for it.

Blood streaked across her dusty hide, forming rivulets from her neck and shoulders; running into her wild, blue eyes. The saliva still frothed at her fangs - tinged pink from her battle with the lions. It sprayed the air with each harsh, laboured breath as she staggered away from those wretched feline lands and into the grey, dead landscape of the pack of the Mava'Bunda.

She did not know, yet, who had died and who had survived. All she knew was that the fighting had been savage and brutal and the light had died from many an eye. Even now she could hear the echoes of battle in her head; the sounds of snapping teeth and the wild cries of the angry and the dying. She could hear the rending flesh, the battle roars and flashes of those memories played across her eyes - momentarily blinding her in her rush to get away and get to safety.

She remembered her fight with the golden lioness. She remembered the feel of the fur and flesh and blood in her mouth. Victory had been so close and it had tasted so incredibly sweet! And then it had been ripped away from her by a late arrival and she had come face to face with two lions. Mad as she was, she was not that mad and so she had fled, the bitter feelings of failure hounding her the whole way back.

She had lost. But did that mean the rest of the hyenas had also? And for that matter, where had her sister been?

She'd cast a look around for help when those two lions had turned to face her together and there had been no one. No one there at her side. Her sister should have been there! So where was she? Fighting elsewhere? Injured? Dying?

Dead?

And then the laugh echoed from the bones and Zimwi's wounded body twisted mid-stride to seek out its owner. She had no sense to be wary or afraid. She was angry and mad and her sister hadn't been there! The pain and adrenaline still rushed through her, driving her on and a moment later she came into sight. A blood-spattered demon with mad, rolling eyes and a froth-lathered maw.

She gave a long, low growl and set her trembling forepaws into the grey dust. "Sister!" She bellowed. "Where were you when we needed you?"

Bilisi watched as her dear, dera twin sister stormed around the bones in the graveyard, a beautiful sight of gore and anger consuming one beast. She let her sister's anger blow over her, the form of the hyena swaying softly as she tried to lessen her laughter. Best not to lose it too soon.

"I was right where I was needed. Watching our plan being executed. Its a pity that the lions' King didn't die. That might have changed the course of history forever." She glanced at Zimwi's body, noticing that the old hyena had not fared too well in the battle.

"Pity that you didn't just die. It would have made things so much easier for you, dear sister." She removed herself from her comfortable position, slowly pacing Zimwi as she inspected her. "You weren't originally supposed to fight. We're old, you know. We were to watch the blood spill, to corner the King and kill him." Her words were hushed, her deep voice lashing out in anger at no one in particular. "The Pridelands would have been easy to take afterwards."

She paused behind Zimwi, a deep look of contemplation on her face. "Perhaps next time."

"Watching? Watching!?" Zimwi sputtered. It was clear, from her anger and incoherence, that if this was anyone but her sister, she would have gone for the throat by now. Even still, she looked close. Very close.

She shifted her weight from one paw to the other and then back again, fidgeting as if she wasn't quite sure where she wanted her paws to take her. Then her sister continued and the bloodied hyena looked positively savage. She curled back her lips to lay bare her teeth and drew her head and ears up high. She might be old but she was not weak. If she had been weak she would have died. And what was this?

Pity she hadn't died? Why would her sister be saying these things?! Her midn tried to grasp understanding and failed. What was Bilisi playing at?

She jerked forwards, snapping her teeth together. "Next time? Next time?! We were supposed to win this time! The visions said we would win and they believed me. You fool, Bilisi. I will have no power over them now." Why had her visions failed her so terribly? She had seen their victory. She had smelt and tasted it, and yet...here they were. The losers. And she was in pain and angry and defeated and her sister was making no sense at all. "And you. I never thought you would be such a coward as to hide behind your age."

And if the plan had been to corner the king, why hadn't she ever been informed?

She edged forwards, growling loudly.

"You will have power," she said in a ghosty, empty tone. "I will give you that power."

Her body seemed to twitch awkwardly, as if it was suddenly uncomfortable. A groan of pain escaped her lips, but it was much more feline than canine. A bulbous growth seemed to appear on Bilisi's back, but as soon as it was there it was gone.

With another groan, a few black feathers sprinkled the ground around Bilisi and Zimwi. Soft laughter returned, and it was remarkably deep. Her snout shrank, and the fur that had been plastered against its back began to shed off like a snake shedding its old skin. Then it all happened so quickly. Large black wings. Blood-coloured coat. Tufted tail. Massive muscular frame. Golden jewelry that was tainted with dirt. Large, golden eyes, the same that Bilisi had.

Everything that screamed mutant feline. Lion. Enemy to hyenas.

Dathcharu'kai was too pleased with himself. The only remaining reseblance to Bilisi was a tattered pelt that laid next to him. Bilisi had existed. She had died on her own, and Dath had cloaked himself carefully, wearing the coat of the dead hyena to keep Bilisi's scent on him, while using his power to perfect his disguise. Keeping so close to Zimwi had provided good results, his power tainting her sanity. It was perfect, really.

Except the war had failed.

Zimwi's snarl froze and for a moment her crazed eyes turned to hazy glass. What was happening to Bilisi? What was happening to her sister? She was too angry, too shocked, too frightened to do anything but stand and watch as her sister died before her.

Watch as she died a second death.

Watch as another was 'born' before her.

And then a groan of utter pain and anguish ripped from her throat as she tried to grasp what she had seen. Tried and failed. Her mind reeled and the confusion blinded her - left her unable to think coherently.

Zimwi's body tensed and then she was springing forwards; not at Dath, but towards the crumpled pelt lying there on the ground by his paws. The pelt that resembled her own. "Bilisi! Bilisi!" The name burst painfully from her jaws as she stooped to nuzzle at the remains of her sister - remains that had been discarded there by that...that monster! She pawed at the empty skin for a moment, as if trying to find anything that remained. Anything at all. She had died before. Why couldn't she come back again? Why wasn't she returning?! "Bilisi, get up! Get up! You stupid, stupid hyena!" She paused for breath, her body shaking as she looked down at the pitiful remains of what had once been her sister. "Why won't you get up?!"

Nothing.

The anger faded as the realisation began to sink in.

"Bilisi..."

She was gone. Gone forever. She had been given her second chance and that had been taken. Taken from her by--

Remembering, Zimwi growled anew, her head snapping around; eyes flashing maniacally. And then, for the first time, she saw who it was who stood before her; as if the world had suddenly come into focus. Some disgusting, tainted lion, thing; all smug and disgusting. The growl increased in strength as she reached for words that seemed strangely elusive. "You." She snarled, eyes narrowing as she turned herself so she was standing protectively over her sister's remains. "You did this! You killed her! You bring her back right now or I'll take out your throat!"

She tensed her body as if to lunge at him. "Bring her BACK!"

Dathcharu'kai laughed. She was one of the best toys to play with that he had come across in such a long time. His favor for hyenas had risen throughout this 'experiment', disregard the fact that they were horrible battlers. That may need to be remedied in the future, a few generations down the line.

His tail swayed behind him as he refused to move. He would not allow this rat to gain any superiority over him. "You know she's been dead. You didn't want to accept it. When I resurrected her, in a sense, you gladly let it be true, no matter the fact that it wouldn't be possible." He had a slight frown on his features, a touch disappointed that she didn't seem so flattered he had taken interest in her. Dathcharu'kai didn't know the true meaning of loss, and it frankly would never touch him the same way it had touched Zimwi.

"I'll make sure she lives on in you," the god chuckled. He took a few looming steps forward, his wings fanned out to his sides. They seemed to be a bit blurry if one tried to focus their eyes on him.

He was going to cast a spell. One that would put a strain on him, but bring him amusement for quite some time.

"You will be my agent of Chaos in this region, sweet Zimwi."

He was laughing.

Why was he laughing?

Bilisi was dead and she was threatening him and all he could do was laugh?! Oh she would kill him and she would enjoy it. She'd rip out his throat and leave him to choke on the ground, spluttering and weak. His blood would stain the ground, so deep and dark that not even the rain would wash it away. She'd tear off his pelt and wear it as a trophy and...and...

Her eyes dithered on the scraggly pelt of her dead sister and, without warning, she felt a horrible nausea rise within her. She was still lying there in scraps on the ground; unmoving and lifeless. Shouldn't she have come back by now? Shouldn't he be working his power to create her a new life? It had happened before and she didn't care what he was saying. She had believed it because it had been true. Her sister had been with her!! Alive and well until he had arrived on the scene!!

And then the winged lion was moving towards her, his words putting an intense bolt of fear through her being. Her anger died in an instant and, instead, her body filled with a horrible, cold, twisting dread. It froze her paws to the ground and had her gazing up at him in horror. He truly was a monstrous thing, huge and menacing and...could she really work her teeth past all that fur to grab his throat?

Then there were his wings...his wings...

What was going on?! What was he doing?!

She tried to growl, but to her utter shame, it came out as a strangled whine. "Bilisi." She whispered, her voice shaking. "Bilisi. Bilisi. Bilisi." Her eyes flicked again to the lifeless pelt. Nothing. No movement. No rescue. Truly dead, then. Dead as dead could be. Perhaps it was for the best, then, that it end for her, too. She had no power without Bilisi. Nothing at all to live for. Without her twin she was just a cranky old hyena, too wounded now to put up much of a fight. There would be no more respect, no position of authority. She had nothing to live for.

But there was still her pride. She had that, if nothing else. And this beast was too lion-like to allow her to submit without at least attempting to escape. She would die as she had lived, then: dominant, stubborn and determined. No more whining. No more hesitating.

"I will not be yours to use, monster!!" She snarled, a brief flicker of fire lighting the backs of her eyes. She would not run - could not - so she would stand her ground and die a noble death. "Stay back!" She warned. "I'm warning you, stay back!! My sister will have her vengeance and I will draw your blood!" She set her shaking paws more firmly against the ground and lowered her head to protect her own throat.

Then she lunged at him, her wild eyes honed in on his neck. "Die!!"
