Howl was walking down the streets of Barton, looking quite alone. He paused every so often, at the windows, but never for long. He seemed determined to get to where-ever he was going. The teenage wizard as headed towards a small pawn shop. He was fingering a small, velvet covered box. It wasn't the box he intended to sell, but what was inside it.

His wife had died recently, in a fire. A day before Howl had recieved that letter from Adrian, he had gone out to a jewelry store, to purchase her a ring. He had summoned a few by magic before, but this one--it was special. He'd worked for it. He'd earned it. Just like Sophie would have wanted him to do. She was gone. Gone. No matter what Calcifer said.

So there was no point in him keeping it. He continued his way down to the pawnshop, ignoring looks he received. He had once recieved stares for his brightly colored clothing; now he was getting stares because he was all in black. "Mourning," he would tell them. "I'm in mourning."

Sophie, or rather, Tara, was bored, and rather...unhappy. This plot of her father's...she didn't understand it. Apparently it had been to draw out Howl's true feelings for her, but it all seemed excessive to the sensible young witch.
She frowned as she headed down the road, staring at the concrete contemplatively. Should she really keep this up..?
She didn't see the point.
But, she sighed, she did want to know what Howl had been up to. He hadn't mentioned any red head in the few times they had talked...who was she? A girlfriend? Perhaps he was heartless, but she had thought that he would stay some semblance of faithful to her.
It hurt to think that he hadn't been. She probably should have expected it, and to be honest, she had, in a way. She just hadn't expected it to hurt as much as it did.

Did he deserve this, though? Pretending she was dead? She hadn't really agreed to this whole charade, and she certainly hadn't agreed to that part of it. How was Howl supposed to know she needed to be saved if she was supposedly dead?

He was probably miserable. Alone, and wearing black, and sliming all over the place.

As she looked up, she realized she was right about two of the previous three thoughts. He was alone and wearing black, but he wasn't sliming. A small miracle. Perhaps he was over the tantrum stage? Or not quite that far, yet.

She stopped where she was, her mouth a small 'o' of shock. She had assumed and imagined what Howl would be like...but seeing it now, for herself...
It was shocking. Heartbreaking.

And if she hadn't felt bad before, she certainly felt guilty now. How had she done this to him? How was this a remedy for their problems at all?
Once again, she had failed to fix a problem. She had probably only made it worse.

He was certainly past the tantruming stage, but seemed stuck in the miserable, wearing black stage. He nearly bumped into a pink haired girl, before taking his eyes off his boots. "I apologize, I wasn't--" he paused, and studied her through red, swollen eyes. "Tara?" he asked. He had met her once before, at the park. Howl hadn't much liked her. She reminded him of Sophie--and yet, she was the very opposite. This time, he didn't attempt to force a smile.

"What are you up to?" he asked. "Working magic for hobby, still?" He wouldn't stop long. He had to get to the pawn shop before it closed. "I'm just headed to the pawn shop. Got something to sell," he held up the velvet box for her to see. He looked away, and frowned. "I haven't seen you since we met at the park," he said. "You doing alright?"

Howl certainly wasn't. He wanted to die. He wanted to be with Sophie. ...But Morgan needed him. And Morgan would come.

"I'm sorry..." She said as they very nearly collided, although she wasn't sorry for almost bumping into him. She was very sorry; but for something else.
Her silver eyes flicked down to the box in Howl's hand, and she instantly knew what it was. A ring. But why was she selling it?
She smiled back, crossing her arms and resting her weight on one stiletto entrapped foot.

"Me? I'm fine. Nice new style." She said cheerfully, although she wanted to be anything but cheerful. Sometimes it was hard to resist the spell on her - it wanted her to act odd. But she didn't want to act odd right now - she wanted to comfort Howl! And to find out what the ring was for!

"Why're you selling that? Your girlfriend dump you?" Well, that was sort of what she'd intended, at least. She managed to not frown and snap at the spell - usually she could bully it into behaving for her. But right now, in front of Howl...well, she supposed that would be a bad idea.

"Girlfriend?" Howl repeated with a frown. He didn't have a girlfriend. He didn't remember ever mentioning one to Tara--he of course, had mentioned that Sophie had died. "No," he said, once he'd recovered. Did people really think he would have gone out and gotten a girlfriend so soon after Sophie had died? "My wife died, you see." It was difficult for him to say, even now, without his eyes filming over. "I bought this for her the day before her father sent me that letter saying she'd died," he added with a shrug. "I worked for it, and there's no one I'd rather give it to. So I'm selling it. Maybe use the money to get some flowers to put on her grave, or something. She liked flowers."

He shrugged, and studied her. "Why?" he asked. "Why'd you think I had a girlfriend?" And why would she care that he was selling it? "What kind do you think I should get?" He asked. "Lilies, or daffodils?"
PostPosted: Wed Sep 28, 2011 9:05 pm

Darn. Darn, darn, dang it, she'd screwed up already. But was that such a bad thing?
Oh, hang it all, she thought - what did it matter, anyways?
She stared at the ring, lost in thought; He'd bought it...for her? But, surely he couldn't have. Not if he'd been seeing another woman, as her father had said. As everyone had said. Her heart clenched in her chest, and she only faintly heard his question.

"Daffodils. Or bluebells..." She said automatically, without thinking. "Everyone likes bluebells..." She smiled a bit, then frowned once more.
"Oh. The girlfriend thing? I've seen you around with some red-haired girl."
She had seen him, to be honest. Walking around and getting ice cream and acting particularly doting. The thought irked her, and she found her anger was back, strengthening her conviction. Even though her hair was currently pink, the red headed temper was still there.
"On dates. To ice cream parlours and stuff." She sniffed. "A bit shallow of you, if your wife is dead."

As soon as she let the jab loose, she felt bad. How could she bother him about his grief?! Oh, but how could he go on dates with some...some Hussy! Even if she did have hair like Sophie's, that was no excuse. Howl shouldn't have found a replacement!
He...he should have been loyal to her...

Again she looked down at the ring, her voice catching in her throat.

"A bit...heartless."

Daffodils. Sophie had liked daffodils. She had once attempted to keep daffodils in June, which hadn't gone over well. Instead they had become a very powerful weedkiller. "You mean Kali?" Howl asked, still frowning. "Kali's my sister." His expression darkened at the jab. How dare she? She didn't even know him. He glared at her, wiping at his eyes.

"Shut up," he snapped. "You don't know what you're talking about. Kali and I go for ice cream, yes. We haven't gone recently, as you might have noticed, since you apparently are stalking me. She's my best friend. She's helped me keep focused on Sophie so I could finally get the courage to propose to her! Besides," he added, scowling at the pink haired girl in front of him, "for your information, Kali's getting married. To someone else."

He turned away, crossing his arms. Honestly. How could anyone be more wrong? "Don't say that," he growled. "I'm not."

"Oh, you are a liar. Your sister's in Wales-" She wasn't going to explain how she knew that, her mouth a defiant twist on her face. "And you wouldn't go to ice cream with that hag. That's a poor excuse, and-" She poked his chest around his arms, right above where his heart should be.

"You are so heartless. Everyone knows about it. It's weird, that you don't have a heart."
But he had a heartbeat. Why did he have a heartbeat?! Her eyes widened and she lay her hand flat on his chest, ignoring any protests he may have made. She had always been bossy.
"You...you have a heart! Where did you get a heart? How did you get it back from Calcifer?"

She pulled away, realizing that Howl was rather angry.
"Her name...is Kali?" She hadn't bothered to learn. Only left after seeing them, upset and hurt. "She...helped you?"
She didn't believe the bit about her being his sister for a lick of a second, but maybe...Oh, she wanted to believe him about the rest of it.

"My adoptive sister!" Howl snapped. "I've got several of them!" He wasn't about to list them there and then, no. He was absolutely furious. How dare this pink haired, big breasted, small brained fool tell him what he had been doing with his life? "Kali's my sister, and I've been going to ice cream with her since I was little," he added angrily.

"I do have a heart!" He all but glared at her once more. He was surprised when she put a hand to his chest, blue eyes widening slightly. "How do you know about Calcifer?" he asked, for a brief moment, forgetting to look angry and fierce. He looked...broken. He'd been destroyed by Sophie's death, and now a stranger was accusing him of taking advantage of it? "Someone I trust gave it to me," he explained. "We thought it would help in bringing Sophie back... But she's dead. She can't come back..." He turned away again, tugging at his black hair with a hand.

"I've got to go," he muttered. "The pawn shop'll be closing soon, and I've got to buy Sophie some flowers. I don't think Adrian would bother."
PostPosted: Wed Sep 28, 2011 9:43 pm

Finally, something inside Sophie snapped. Perhaps it was her stubborn streak finally flaring out, or a need to protect her cowardly husband. Either way, she felt her power grow inside her, and she opened her mouth.

"Oh, hush up, you naughty spell." She snapped as the magic rose to twist her words. "I'd like to speak properly, and it's rude of you to interrupt. Sit and wait your turn politely." She huffed at it, then looked up at Howl. Chewing on her lip, she played with the gaudy pink hair, and flushed deeply.

"How...how do you know she's dead?" She asked quietly, guiltily. "Perhaps...perhaps she's just disguised, Howl. Y-you never know! Maybe she found out about that girl without knowing about..the sister thing..." She was still a bit confused about that, but Howl had never been what one would call 'normal'. She had to be used to his odd quirks, to be married to him; and so, she didn't mind at the logistics of it.

"And her father never liked you. Maybe...maybe he tricked her." It hurt to think that maybe Adrian had done that. She didn't know who to trust anymore. A little voice was telling her that perhaps he had simply been mislead as well, but now wasn't the time to be worrying about who was in the wrong to begin with. She was in the wrong now, and although she was loathe to admit that fact, she truly wanted to fix it. Howl wasn't Howl anymore, and they couldn't have that. For heaven's sake, he was wearing black!

"Maybe it was a test, for you-" She blurted. "She could be disguised, you know! And..she could be anyone." She shifted uneasily where she stood. "She...well, she could even..be..." She paused, and lifted her eyes to Howl's.
"Well, me."

She blushed again and looked away, flipping her hair - that was the spell, damn it all, being rude once again. She tutted angrily at it, and it shrunk, seeming to her to be reluctant and grumbling.
"Aren't kisses supposed to break all kinds of spells? Maybe you should try that."
Oh, now she was being blatantly obvious. Would he understand? He had to. Had to!

Howl narrowed his eyes. "I went to her funeral," he said. "Adrian might not have liked me, but I don't think he'd lie to everyone..." He frowned in confusion. Adrian had never liked him, so... Maybe he had lied, after all? Like Calcifer had told him? Like Kali had suggested? He hadn't thought the vampire would be so cruel... "Why would she be in disguise?" he asked.

He knew why. She didn't love him anymore. That was it. She was in love with someone else, and just didn't want him to know. So she had pretended to die and disguised herself.... "But I had told her about Kali. In letters... On our dates, I told her there was someone I wanted her to meet. A friend of mine. Why would she make such a mistake? Doesn't she know I love her?" His shoulders slumped. If Sophie had made such a mistake, maybe he hadn't been clear.

"...You?" He huffed, anger rising once more. "You want me to kiss you? Never!"

No, no. Only one he ever wanted to kiss was Sophie. Not this trash.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 28, 2011 10:12 pm

"You did not!" Sophie said. "You didn't say 'I have a red haired girl I'd like you to meet that I've been going on dates with!' You didn't say anything very clearly, Howl." She twitched when he refused to kiss her - that was kind of like a slap in the face. Then, she realized - he was refusing to kiss someone who wasn't her! That was good! That was wonderful!
Joy spread across her face like sunshine, and she beamed at him - until she remembered that him not kissing her was also a bad thing. True love's kiss would break it - and she knew without a doubt that Howl was hers.
She loved him, faults and all. She always had. How had she been so stupid as to think that he would betray her like that?

He was flaky, but he wasn't...like that. He'd been faithful from the moment he married her.

"You weren't clear about it at all, Howl. And don't you dare tell me no! You aren't allowed to tell me no, you coward! Spineless, slithering, sliming wizard. If you were so stuck on finding m-" The spell corrected her. "Sophie, then you'd try anything and kiss anyone to do it."

If only she could bully people the same way she did inanimate objects. Then she'd be able to get Howl to do what she wanted - but if she could have gotten Howl to do what she wanted, she thought, she probably would have done that a very long time ago.

Howl's eyes widened. They grew so large, they took up the majority of his face. Surprise and hope filled his eyes, and his lips twitched. "Sophie?" he breathed. He strode over to her, and put an warm around her. He stared into her eyes for a long, long time.

Then he glared.

"Sophie, it is you!" Oh, he was furious! How could Sophie do this to him? And here she was, acting as if she were innocent! If he had truly wanted the spell off of her, she could have taken it off herself. He huffed at her, frowning. "We'll talk about this later," he decided. He wasn't sure if he wanted to kiss her, really... She had hidden from him and ignored his letters and pretended to be an annoying, pink haired bully--he lowered his lips to hers and kissed her.

And as he did so, he remembered why he loved her. She was his stubborn, nosy, bossy, silly Sophie. Oh, what a mess she'd caused! "You're not going back to Adrian," he told her sternly. "You're living with me. In the castle."
PostPosted: Wed Sep 28, 2011 10:36 pm

At first, she wasn't sure if he would kiss her. Would he be too mad to do so? Would he punish- well, no. She was being stupid, and she knew it. Still, she was overjoyed when his lips pressed against hers. She wrapped her arms around him as she felt her false appearance fade away, her own silver hair and blue eyes returning to her. She beamed into his shoulder, only nodding as he spoke.

"Yes, of course." She finally said. "You finished the castle? Oh, Howl, that's wonderful-" She didn't want to talk about what she had helped to do. Not now. "I missed you. Oh, thank you, Howl. That spell was awful! Stubborn, and rude, and it would hardly listen to me! I'm lucky I was able to say as much as I did-" She placed her hands on either side of his face, gazing into his eyes.
"You're a positive mess, Howl! As if you let yourself get like this. Really." Perhaps now was not the time to tease him, but she couldn't help it. She was just so excited...

"We have so much to talk about...can we please go to the castle now?" She sighed happily and hugged him. "I'm tired...and my feet hurt. No matter how much I talk to these shoes, they will not be comfortable. Well. They're more comfortable than they were before, but even so...Gosh. I do dislike them. I wish I had some nice, sensible boots." Now she was just babbling nervously, blushing. With a firm decision to do so, she stopped, and looked up at him mutely, hoping he would agree to go home. Or...as close to home as they could get.

Howl did not at all appreciate the poke at his appearance. He frowned. "We'll see how you look when you think I've died," he huffed at her. "At least I grieve gracefully. I've seen you cry. Your nose gets horribly red and you look like a reindeer." Impatient as ever, he decided, shaking his head.

"Serves you right," he said with some malice. It served her right, being in pain. "Shouldn't have hidden from me in the first place." He was still bitter about that. He wasn't quite willing to forgive her, yet. Proven by the fact that he'd stuffed the ring box back into his pocket. "You've no idea how much pain you've put me through. I think you can take it." Despite his words, with a wave of the hand, Sophie had dove gray boots, made of soft, comfortable material. Like the ones he had once purchased for her in Ingary.

He took her hand. "Don't think I'm letting you get away with this," he told her. "There'll be green slime when we get home, and I can't be held accountable."
