x x x x x █║ WHO: Alex & Ronan
x x x x x █║ WHAT: After passing it all this time, Ronan decides to see what this Lab thing is all about!
x x x x x █║ WHEN: Early evening on a weekday
x x x x x █║ WHERE: Lab 305
x x x x x █║ WEATHER: Warm, but the breeze is a cool promise of autumn

She could feel the encroaching changes in her favorite season, the slowly cooling air outside already changing the use of the air conditioning inside. The leaves hadn't started to change yet, but the chill in the breeze was promising it would happen soon; it was the moment in the beginning of the season that felt like everything was holding its breath. Soon, the world would exhale, the leaves would sing in a stunning colored tune and then paint the ground with their mosaic. Alex couldn't wait.

Smiling to herself, she brushed her fingers over the glass window of her office, knowing it wouldn't be cold for weeks yet but still willing the temperature to change soon. Folding her arms over her three-quarter sleeve blouse, the champagne colored fabric just off her shoulders and bunched at her elbows, she looked forward to a day she would be able to wear a sweater again, to snuggle into the warmth of a jacket. She also assumed the inclination was in part to find peace and comfort from the past year's events, but she was not about to look that deeply into anything.

With a content little sigh, she dropped one hand to brush a phantom piece of lint off her black jeans before turning to resume working. The files weren't going to write themselves. Besides, she knew Neil was making dinner at home and she wasn't about to miss the chance to harp on her best friend for his horrific cooking skills.

While the weather was still fairly warm that day, a gust of wind flew down the street, causing goose flesh to ripple over Ronan's skin. The selkie paused for a few moments, watching nearby trees flutter in the wind before things calmed and the gust died down to the cool whispering breeze of before. Smiling lazily, he turned his eyes away and continued on his walk back home from work.

Fall was still a few weeks away as things were, but he knew that gust was a sign of things to come, so he made a note to bring his coat to work next time, and made do with hiking up the collar of his shirt in the mean time. Things weren't helped by the fact that his hair was still damp, having helped out in the tanks today and the clean up shower taken right before leaving, but he wouldn't have had it any other way. He loved his job, even if made things a tad inconvenient when walking home in the colder months. Out of the corner of his eye he caught sight of a now familiar fixture on his walk home, and his measured stride slowed until he came to a stop in front of building, thumbs in pockets and head giving a thoughtful tilt.

Lab 305. Originally, it had just been another building on his journey home, just another place on the island. This had all changed 3 years ago, that December where Maili had seen a raevan at the mall and insisted on learning every little thing she could and begging for them to adopt one (he of course refused at the time, worried about how Maili would treat a raevan in her state of obsession). However, it wasn't until last summer when he had attended a Lab event his niece's stead that he gained a personal interest in the place. Ever since he had found himself looking at the building more and more often, sometimes stopping and gazing at the place for several minutes before moving on. There had even been a few occasions where he had glimpsed a raevan through one of the windows, but never had he gone into the building itself. At that moment, he decided it was time to change that.

Giving an absentminded scratch to his goatee, he crossed over to where the building was and placed his hand on one of the door handles. For a fleeting moment he found himself hesitating - maybe even a little nervous? - realizing that he was actually going into Lab 305, but soon he pulled the door open with one fluid motion, entering the lobby. He was ready to learn.

Even from her office, Alex could hear the doors open, heralding a visitor. Somewhat surprised, the Italian moved away from her desk, running over appointments in her mind; they weren't slated for any pick-up's that she'd handle and they didn't have any soul bottles out. With Zeke absent that day, it was up to her to greet the public -- which was of no consequence, given it used to be her job and was one she had rather loved. All sorts came into the Lab for some reason or another; it was how she started her own foray into the world of Raevans, and seeing where she was now, it wasn't like she'd deny someone else the ability to come into the fold. Slender fingers slid around the door frame, supporting herself as she peeked out. Since the person wasn't heading down the hallway, they were new. Swallowing an excited grin, she flit out of her room and into the lobby.

Green eyes fell upon a vaguely familiar but handsome face, earning a quick, polite smile from the researcher. Clasping her hands at first, she then spread them wide to either side, her smile growing. "Welcome to Lab Three-Oh-Five," she greeted the damp man pleasantly before lowering said hands, extending one in greetings as she came within hand-shaking distance of the other. "I'm Alex. What can I do you for today, sir?" Chipper to a fault but entirely content to be herself, she was expecting questions -- mostly about the ice castle spectacle that had happened earlier that year. That's what most of the stragglers had come in for, to gawk at how well cleaned and kept the Lab was after such a horrific incident. Even so, she could still hope this chilled stranger would pose a different opportunity than dwelling on that frightening time, smiling evenly at him.

After entering the lobby, Ronan stopped for a few moments to simply take in his surroundings. A few chairs and a table, reception desk at the front, and it all lit up by the windows facing the street. A fairly simple set up overall, but it was still comfortable and nice, not the cold clinical set up he had almost been fearing upon coming into the building. Noticing that there was no one at the reception at the moment, the selkie began to turn towards the chairs, and that was when Alex made her entrance.

Ronan immediately felt himself relaxing with the woman's cheerful greeting, and the last of his doubts about coming into the building today finally melted away. Even with the welcoming lobby part of him had still feared that Lab 305 was an exclusive community, not overly welcoming to newcomers. The greeting he had just been given ground that notion to dust, and he happily and warmly accepted the hand presented to him, grip firm but casual.

"A pleasure to meet you Alex. My name is Ronan," he said with a smile, drawing his hand back after the handshake and hooking his thumb into his pocket. There was a brief moment where he considered his next words, but the pause was slight and soon the selkie launched into what he was going to say, knowing that this was the time to ask his questions.

"This may be somewhat out of the blue, without an appointment and all, but I was wondering if you could possibly help me learn about Lab 305 and.... the raevans. My niece briefly met a raevan three years ago at Christmas time, and she's been interested in them ever since. I ended up going to the Lab beach party last summer in her stead, and I must say they've ended up catching my interest too." He gave a chuckle with last statement, but returned to form in short order, going right back to what he had been saying. "However, my knowledge is very limited, and that is where I'm hoping you can help me out today. For the most part I am wondering about the raevans and the lab itself." At this point Ronan shifted his weight, wondering if he should say what was next on his mind, finally deciding to go for it. "I am also curious about the community, and.... possibly becoming part of it myself."

While he had been given the impression earlier that Lab 305 was an open and accepting place, Alex's next words would give him a definitive answer on the issue, and so he waited to hear what the woman before him would say, and to see what he might be able to learn.

The Italian watched the selkie with polite interest on her features, the likes of which had not yet been tempered by age or the hardships she'd endured since she'd been Zul's Guardian. It was no wonder her disposition kept so cheery, for as soon as Ronan finished his words, her face lit and dropped formality entirely as though the man had just agreed to be her new best friend. Squeezing his hand, she offered a chipper, "I thought you looked familiar! I probably saw you at the party -- I'm horrible with names but I never forget a face!" Laughing lightly, she motioned towards the hallway, releasing Ronan's hand in order to play the good host.

"No appointment is necessary to learn what we're about! I'm not usually at the front area but we're always happy to share! If you come in again, you'll probably meet Zeke and his Raevan, Anastacia. Myself, I'm Guardian to one named Zul. We tend to be very passionate about our work and their well being so we will never tell you we're too busy for your interest." Uttering a soft sound in her throat like a repressed happy squeal, she all but skipped down the tile hallway. "Of course, I can't tell you the entire process, but the Lab serves as a means to house and create Raevans. Raevans themselves are a mixture of two things."

Pausing by one of the more heavy-duty doors, she used her generous strength to push the door open, not entering nor inviting Ronan to, but allowing him to look within. The room was sparse save for a few cylindrical tanks in the middle, a few empty, but some churning and murky. "First, there's the fel essence, something extraordinary from a time long gone. For example, there's a fire that never goes out, or a cloud you can touch! They're really fantastic things!"

Ronan had considered Alex to be cheerful a few moments before, but now he realized it was just a precursor as he was hit with the brunt of her joy. The cheerfulness was infectious, and soon he found himself giving a chuckle at her happy proclamation of recognition. "Now that you mention it I think I did see you around at the party. I don't think ever got around introducing myself however, so no need to feel bad about not remembering a name," he said with a grin. Hearing the mention of the name Zeke the selkie found himself perking up, the syllables triggering a distant memory in his mind. "I think I could have met Zeke at the beach party. Would cheerful guy with astonishing hair be an accurate description?" Ronan was practically positive now that he had met the man, but confirmation from his guide wouldn't hurt.

He listened to the rest of her words as they headed down the hallway, and then the two of them came to a door. When Alex pushed it open he wasn't sure what to expect, but when he saw the tanks within he had a feeling this room was much more important than appearances might suggest. Next came Alex's words on fel essences, and at that moment he was reminded of another conversation from the beach party. "....... or mistletoe that makes you kiss," he found himself saying before he could catch himself. Such bizarre and wonderful things these fel essences seemed to be, and in that moment he had a feeling what the second part of the equation was. "At the beach party I met someone who said they were to have a raevan made of mistletoe paired with the.... soul of a crocodile. Does that mean the next part of the equation is a soul? Though with the fel essences..... where does something so strange actually come from?"

Ronan hoped the woman before him would not mind possibly having her thunder stolen, and that the question he had posed was not too rude or obscure. He would just have to wait and see.

"Never you mind that," she remarked with a cheeky smile, "the public affairs are always chaotic. You're here now and that has to count for something!" The description of Zeke, however, made her laugh in earnest, covering part of her face with her hand as if it might hide some of her glowing amusement. "Perfect. Zeke is like my little brother, he's good people and he'll always take care of you like a portable ray of neon-colored sunshine!" It was only then Alex realized...she hadn't seen the young man in a long time, and certainly not since Zul had grown. She wondered how he was doing, if Anastacia had gotten anymore bearable or if she was still her grumpy, charming self.

The comment about the mistletoe grabbed her attention again, making her wince just a little. "Ah yes, the Forceful Mistletoe. That was given to one Anita by my very own Zul. He...apparently deemed it necessary that she joined the family and sent her the essence without my knowledge. What I wouldn't have given to spare her all that transpired." Shaking her head to herself, smiling just a little ruefully at herself, she again nodded to Ronan's observations. "Yes, the second component is the more dangerous aspect, the soul. It has to be taken from a living creature - not humans, mind you! We're not murderers here and the soul bottle doesn't work that way. The bottle has a colored cloth on it and it is only compatible with beings of a similar color -- for example, Anita's was green; she could have gotten the soul of a blade of grass, of a leaf, a praying mantis, so on and so forth. Zeke's was black and red, so he could have gotten a ladybug or a cardinal, maybe a raw garnet."

The next part was a little harder to explain. Closing the door with a soft click, she crossed the hallway and entered the room to her own office, motioning for Ronan to follow. "The fel essences come from what was once believed to be a myth, maybe you've heard of it -- The Song of Shira?" Opening the blinds in the room to let the sunlight in a bit more, she looked around the clean room with a thoughtful expression. "A long, long time ago, long before the time of humans, when the Yggdrasil tree and Mount Meru still stood, there were two children of the natural world: Freyr and Shira. Freyr died in an unfortunate accident and when Shira found his body, she mourned him with song. The song was so deep and so potent that the entire world mourned with her, putting a perpetual gloom over the land. In her misery, Shira killed herself to be with Freyr, but the song did not pass with her." Leaning one hand on the desk, Alex's far away look continued as she recited the tale she had studied even in college. "The song heralded a great storm, a twisted storm, one that split the world in two and destroyed the Yggdrasil tree, upending the balance and peacefulness the world once knew. The plant-life died, animals became warped and even the weather was fragmented and broken. It is said the God of Creation was filled with sorrow to see His land so torn asunder, and it was then he swept aside what was lost and started anew."

Her green eyes shifted, fixing on Ronan again. "Those fragments never disappeared. The storm warped the living world and that is where the fel essences come from - the great storm that ended in an upheaval of natural law and order. They were all born from a storm, called by a dirge for lost love." Alex grinned then, trying to take off the edge of the serious story. "It's almost romantic, if not so harrowing, huh? But that's where they come from, if you believe in that mythos. Having seen the fel essences and what the Raevans become," the Italian rested her hand over her heart, her expression somewhere between fondness and a distant loss, "I believe."

"With that kind of description is sounds like Zeke is a person I should want to meet again sometime," Ronan said with a smile, and the sentiment was genuine - now that the thought back the man had seemed like a very nice individual, and it was a shame the bustle of the party had cut any sort of further conversation short. And hey, even if a random encounter was unlikely, it certainly wouldn't be difficult to recognize this Zeke!

These happy musings were dampened slightly when he heard that Anita had been given grief due to the fel essence she had received, but at least there was a raevan for her that would come out of these less fortunate moments. Perhaps a small comfort, he thought, if the same issues with the essence persist in the raevan... But there was no need to judge he reminded himself, and then proceeded to hope that when she received her raevan it would be the best occasion possible.

Alex's confirmation on the role of soul in the raevan brought Ronan back to the current moment, and the selkie gave a fascinated nod at the information about the soul cloth colors. "Gathering a soul is a dangerous thing, but I must admit that this method is rather... ingenious." Following Alex over into the office he crossed his arms comfortably as he began to listen to her words... and then went completely still.

He knew this story. He knew it but hadn't heard it told to him for years. As her words washed over him he found himself thinking back, far back to the whispers of the ocean and it's currents, each segment of her story bringing up a memory of when it had been told to him before. His parents telling him of a different world before this one, all of them gliding through deep blue. An old leviathan murmuring in the deep about a great cataclysm and the sorrow that caused it, reminding a young selkie he would receive a similar fate if he did not swim away from his jaws, and swim he did. And most of all, the constant reminders to beware of the fragments removed from the natural world, to avoid the remnants of the storm so that any unknown aspects of it's nature might not do him harm. He dutifully listened, reassuring that he would play it safe, and yet part of him had always hoped to witness these wonders of another world as he twirled through the ocean waters, young and naive.

"... part of me thought I might never hear that story again," he found himself saying aloud, his eyes distant. "And I've always believed, but to realize that I might finally get to see the fragments of the lost world that I dreamed about as a child is somewhat... surreal." Ronan gave a slight shake of his head, emerging from his stillness to give a chuckle and lopsided smile to Alex. "Small world it seems."

The Italian laughed again, a delighted sound between agreement and amusement. Talking about Zeke was always a light-hearted affair that she welcomed with open arms. "He would be happy to be of service. Any other time you come here, you'll see him." In a way, Alex missed greeting everyone that came in and handling the Raevans as they were born, but she knew she was of better use to them all in her current position. Especially with all her recent scars...

Shaking off the memories that still clung to her thoughts like stubborn cobwebs, she offered a soft, if not rueful smile to Ronan. "It is a great danger," she agreed, not even about to pull the punches when informing the other of what was expected, "but it's necessary. Raising a Raevan can be very dangerous because we still know so little about them. Scientifically, they're an enigma, but..." Clasping her hands together, she moved to stand next to Ronan, apparently comfortable in the man's presence as she looked up to him. "...when you see your Raevan for the first time, that beautiful being, you don't see danger. You don't remember the trials of what it took to make them, you just..." Alex hesitated for a moment, her green eyes momentarily distant. "...you know this is how it was supposed to be." Blinking to clear her vision, she offered a more embarrassed smile. "When I first saw Zul, it was love at first sight - in a platonic manner. He's been my pride and joy ever since."

The expression on the man's face was not lost on her, earning a wider, warmer grin. "Oh I like you," she very nearly giggled in her enthusiasm, "you're the first person I've met in all my time doing this that can appreciate the lore of where it all came from and not just the outcome." Lifting her hand, she rested it on his shoulder in a more familiar than professional manner, giving him an encouraging squeeze. "And if I have any say in it, I'd have you as a prospective Guardian based on that alone." Withdrawing her hand, she crossed her arms and glanced out the window, thinking before she spoke again. "I can't show you the fel essences, but I can have you meet Raevans. I'd be happy to schedule a meeting with any of them, or -- even Zul, if appearances don't bother you."

Smiling a little more privately, she scratched her elbow. "He's probably one of the least conventional of the Raevans. They all have an innate beauty but he's...he's special."
