Galla was just finishing playing when she saw another foal doing something interesting. Approaching the male tenatively, she watched as he did magnificient things with his claws. She couldn't help but find herself captivated by what he was doing.

The work, whatever he was making looked as if it was easy. The way he did it with so little effort and so much surety. It was mesmerizing and beautiful, a weakness of hers. She watched for a few more moments not daring to interupt him less he should stop.

Unfortunately, her curiosity got the better of her as she asked in a soothing tone, "What are you making?"

Taarab smiled bittersweetly into his work as Galla played, smoothing a bone that had been cut in half with a sharp piece of flint he had held between his toes with leather to saw without dulling his claws over a rounded rock.

Lost to the rhythm of the scrape of bone over rock, the soothing feel of the polishing of the deer-ivory into a smooth shape, forming an arched cone of bone, the base still the natural knob of the joint. The colt didn't even realized he was being closely observed since he was comforting himself with something familiar.

The child had recently been torn away from one of his basket mates, his brother taken away by a sudden flash flood. His young mind could barely comprehend the loss that was hurting his heart. A low shuttering sigh escaped his lips and he blinked a bit at his watering eyes, rubbing at it with the back of his paw as he kept himself wrapped up in his plans, giving himself something he could control in these trying times, his mother having left to go search for his brother, leaving him without his parents except for small visits with his father as his mother had left instructions for him to get additional classes from his dad.

What was once just a hobby or game was quickly becoming an obsession. Budding talent becoming a way to truly mold the world around him into something he could understand.

He paused to see if he got it good enough to start sharpening the underside of the arch into a blade on the rock when he was snapped from his focus by a question. Looking up at Galla with a startled expression, he blinked a few times until her question actually registered, "Oh, Hello Mistress Galla-" He always made sure to give mares their proper title, no matter how young they were, "I'm just making Mistress Nakita some new claws. I've been practicing and got some lessons on how to do it, so I can make her better ones than just tieing broken bones together like a bracelet now. But I wanna make sure I get the claws right before I try adding them to anything."

Galla fluttered her wings lightly in excitement. He was making claws out of bones! What could be more amazing than that?

She liked the way he said her name. It was like being a grown up with a role. "Mistress Galla," it had a nice ring to it. Shaking the thought from her mind, she watched him intently trying to be quiet. "You're very good. Very talented," she hesitated a moment trying to remember his name. For a moment it eluded her before she blushed at her own forgetfulness, "Taarab."

Sometimes it seemed, when she got very excited or absorbed, that she couldn't remember things. Like her body was only big enough to think of one thing at a time. Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm her thoughts. She would not be a good defender of the flock if she couldn't focus more. "How long did it take you to learn?"

"Thank you, Misstress Galla." Taarab chuckled, smiling with a bit of pride and appreciation for the compliment.

However, the other foal asked him a question he was unsure of how to answer. Pausing in thought, the Harpy Colt made a soft noise, trying to figure it out, "Well I'm still learning, but I've been doing this for.. Almost a year? I'm gonna be old enough for the Second Year Colts now."

He smiled over at the slightly older girl, eyes bright, "Are you excited for moving into the Filly Classes? since you're going over before I'm old enough to move to the big colts herd it should be coming soon, where you can be with the bigger girls and start learning more adult skills and abilities."

Returning his gaze to his work, he continued to smooth the bone into clawed shapes like his father had suggested,"I might still see you guys on occasion -- I have to make Nakita her claws, but that might just be us meeting outside the flock under our mothers protection so I don't learn girl things."

Galla smiled at him for a moment lost in thoughts of her classes. It was true that she'd be moving up soon into classes to learn to do things more than just playing at it. She was both excited and a little scared. She'd always loved to dance and sing, but something in her kept making her feel like she should do more. Did she not love her people? Did she not want to protect them? Could that not be better served by becoming a guard to them? What better way could there be?

She shook her head lightly, the feathers bobbing. She had time though, lots of time yet to decide. "I'm really excited, a little nervous," she confessed to him.

She watched his claws move as he shaped the design, "You do so well already. A few more years and you'll be the best amongst them. I wish I could say that to my service to the flock in a few more years."

She nodded her head, "I'm sure I'll see you time to time. You know my brother probably?"

He nodded rapidly, hair flopping into his eyes as he did so, "So am I -- its exciting to know that I'm going to start learning more, but scary because of it as well.. Likely more so for mares: you're so much more.." Taarab bit his lip for a moment, trying to think of a good word for what he was trying to say. Important could work, but his father stressed that boys were important as well, they just had different roles and ways to support the flock. Responsible worked better, but with her already nervous, he didn't want to scare her with the thoughts of responsibilities.

After the breath of pause, he continued with his somewhat limited childhood vocabulary, "Well, more than us boys. You'll be learning how to hunt, how to fight, how to capture outsiders without harming them. We just gotta learn etiquette, history, and see if we're interested in being harem guards or sparring partners. Adult stallions don't gotta do anything."

He looked up from his bone and stone, holding a nearly finished bone claw up between his fingers, "So no matter what, you'll be better than me in what you do, Mistress Galla. And since I do know your brother, maybe we will see each other again when your mom picks him up with you, or when I go see Misstress Nakita to give her even better claws to practice with. Or even other mares who need them! I wanna be useful, like the three Good Brothers of the Flock in the stories my dad tells Rai and...."

Taarab froze, face screwing up in sadness, the tears suddenly no longer being held back. He had almost managed to forget his brother in the midst of the conversation, but the conversation had lead the memories of his loss to the front of his mind. The flush of the water, the cries of his brother as he was swept under and away by the sudden rush of water. Taarab had been so focused on games and playing with that dumb round rock he had found that he hadn't been there for him. And he couldn't do anything.

Dropping the bone claw, he sniffled, trying to hold back the tears as his body shook with sobs, his front legs stiff and braced on the ground to keep him from falling over with how hard he was shaking, "I.. I need to be useful... For Rai.... For.. For Momma... Why do boys always leave? I want.. I want them to stay... I dont.. I dont want to be alone, Galla.."
