This takes place when both were adols, when Ualani was still a pet. It's mostly for history/character purposes.

Ualani:
Ualani lay on a cushioned lounge chair in her masters' fenced backyard. Her collar itched her today. It wasn't new, it wasn't old, it had never been particularly bothersome before. But today it was a reminder of how controlled her life was. She hadn't minded it, not when she was growing up. She had liked being a part of the humans' family. They had treated her well, she even thought they might love her. She had grown up with the human children, she cared about them, she was even mildly protective of them, almost as if they were her own pups.

But she hadn't been good enough for her masters. She was a good, loyal, obedient pet, but she didn't have what was required to participate in shows. So they had decided to try an easier route. Fighters and pearl divers were good for nothing else. If they had a fighter or a pearl diver, they could have some extra spending money. They had taken her to several stables to peruse the other Mokai, and the more they looked, the more uncomfortable she grew.
It had been weeks since that day, but the masters were arguing about it again. It would almost have been all right if the argument had been whether or not to go through with the attempt. No, the argument was whether to pair her with a pearl diver or a fighter. She had one of the little masters let her out and she settled herself on one of the chairs in the shade near the fence, contemplating her life and future.

A soft sigh left her, her head on her petite paws. She stared at the fence, fantasizing about running away. She loved the young masters, but she couldn't do what her masters wanted of her. She wasn't ready for something like that, and it was looking like getting away was the only way she would be able to avoid it.

Rylis:
The colony stunk of human...

Their filthy roads, the hard stone ground, the towering buildings, and the ever-constant smell of the race itself. Rylis had grown familar with the city since he was a pup- he knew the sights, sounds, and smells well enough. His former master had run him at the end of a leash every morning and every night. Up hills, through narrow allyways, and down busy roads- but never out in the wild. The first time Rylis had seen the lands beyond the stone foundations he had been beside himself with awe. Instead of buildings, trees grew. Unfenced, uncropped, untamed. Grass stretched on and eventually faded into the sparkling sands of the sea. There were valleys, hills, dens, caves- wild, free, and untouched. There were crawling things, swimming things, flying things, and singing things. There were sights and smells he never could have imagined before hand.

And it was all his. Or in his mind it was.

A wild mane topped a head held low inbetween his shoulders. A sleek back boasting a spotted pelt caught the moonlight as careful paws moved across the asphault ground. Shoulders with the rippled muscles of a fighter carried him in quick, easy movements through streets and down allyways. It was his first trip back to the stone hell since he'd escaped. If he could get out- so could anyone else, and he was determined to help that process along.

He slowed as he came into an empty neighborhood street, his ears slowly rolling one way then the other. There were murmurs of conversation from open windows and doors, but no shadows darkened the lit openings so he continued on, keeping low and silent. A few houses down, his nose rose up into the air.

Someone was nearby.

His head turned sharply, his eyes catching the moonlight as his posture went ridged. There, sitting on a pillow with her collar shining in the moonlight, was a fellow Mokai.

A pet. Disgusting.

Ualani:
Ualani continued to lie there for a time, telling herself that she wasn't being pitiful, that she wasn't just being mopey and feeling sorry for herself. It was a horrible situation, wasn't it? Wasn't she too young? She was a pet, not some common b***h in heat, wasn't that supposed to mean something? Wasn't she supposed to be part of the family?

Her lowered ears perked up when she thought she heard something, movement on the other side of the fence. It didn't sound like a human, they didn't move that quietly. Maybe... if she showed that she could protect... No, she wasn't a fighter, she couldn't defend the masters. She would never be of any use to them.
Curiosity got the better of her, though, and she carefully slid off of the chair.

"Is someone there?" her voice was soft as she searched the darkness, moving close to the fence, but not so much that whatever it was could reach her if it tried.

Rylis:
A pair of baleful eyes met hers as she peeked into the street. Perhaps she was a watch-pet? If she was... she wasn't a very good one.

"One peep to your masters, and you'll lose your tail." A rhaspy, youthful voice broke the silence, but just barely. There crouched in the shadows of the small hedge boardering the tame mokai's yard and their neighbor crouched a young Mokai. Crowned with a wild mane and decorated only with a few lines of blue paint, the creature flashed his teeth in silent warning.

Ualani:
Her ears flicked back when she saw him and he threatened her. She could tell by the look of him that... that he wasn't a tame Mokai. And he wasn't wearing a collar. Was he not owned by humans?

"I... I won't," Lani replied earnestly, peering closer at him. He looked a little familiar...
What was he doing here, if he was feral? Humans could catch him. If it were here, she wouldn't step a paw back in the city, she wouldn't risk being taken by humans again. She had no delusions anymore that they could really love their Mokai, even the pets. They were just another object.

She wondered... If he was feral, could he take her with him, away from the humans? No, she shouldn't trust him, should she? It wouldn't be a safe bet. But... But she couldn't run away on her own, even if she wanted to. She didn't know how to sneak, not really. Or how to get out of the city.

"What are you doing here?"

Rylis:
"Good." He seemed to settle , but only slightly. His posture remained defensive and tight, his limbs coiled in the likely case that he'd be forced to flee from the city at any given moment. He'd not risk being caught again. He'd rather die than live one more day behind steel bars or fighting for the entertainment of the fleshy two-leggers.

The question earned a toothy smirk from the male and a sharp flick of his bushy tail. "I'm getting mokai out of this place."

Ualani:
Lani relaxed a little when the male did, glad that he seemed to take her at her word. She had been honest, after all, and she would have hated being accused of lying. She really was a good girl, under normal circumstances. But life right now didn't really fall under normal circumstances, at least to her way of thinking it didn't.

The smaller Mokai had to stop herself from launching herself towards him.
"You're doing what??" she asked, her eyes wide in surprise. He was helping other Mokai escape? No way, he couldn't be telling the truth, it was too fantastic of a thought. She had been hoping for something just like this and here it was? No, it couldn't be real.
But it was, wasn't it? And he had accepted her word, couldn't, shouldn't she accept his?

"Would you take me?" The words were out before she could stop them.

Rylis:
"I'm getting Mokai out of here. We don't belong in a place like this. We belong to ourselves, and no one else. Here, they suck the life right out of you, turn you into a plaything for their own means. I wont' stand for it any more." He almost growled the last few words and the hackles along his back began to rise up slowly.

At her request he snorted and took a quick glance back towards her home. "... I dunno if you'll make it out there, pet. But we can give it a shot. Can you get away without your masters seeing you?"

Ualani:
"I'll do anything, I'll try anything, I just..." Lani paused, looking over her shoulder at the house. She could still hear the faint sounds of the masters talking, of the young masters playing in their room. The young masters... How could she leave them? They were so little, they wouldn't understand what had happened to her. Would they cry? Wail? Hate the masters? Or would they just forget about her?
She hoped it would be the latter. She loved them, she knew if anyone loved her it was the young masters. She didn't want them to suffer.

"I just can't stay here. The masters..." She shook her head fiercely and looked around the yard. A fence wrapped around half of the sides of the square, the neighbor's hedges planted snugly against one of the sides. The house made up the third part of the square. But the last side was a high stone wall built by the other neighbors. The masters hated it, said it was tacky beyond belief, but the neighbors were more wealthy, could afford to do things like that. If she could pull the chair over to it, she might just be able to jump onto it and then... she could figure it out from there.

"I think I know a way, I just have to be quick and quiet," she replied and hurried to the task.
It seemed like moving the chair was the most difficult part, but it was deceptively light. Moving it quietly wasn't an issue, either, because it was already on the grass. No, the hard part was keeping to the shadows and working quickly, and then getting onto the wall. She wasn't really exercised much, but she did her best to stay as fit as she could in the space that she had and the diet her masters provided. It took several attempts, but finally her paws hooked over the top and she scrambled up.

The wall was more narrow than she had originally thought, but she had just enough room to flatten herself against it and look back at the house, looking for movement. Nothing near the doors or windows. Determination welling inside of her, she stood while still trying to stay close to the wall and moved as quickly as she could to the back corner of it. When she saw the height there, she froze, pressing herself close to the top again, ears flat with the sudden feeling that she wouldn't be able to do this after all.

Rylis:
Rylis did nothing to hide his skeptical outlook on the female's desperation. She didn't seem the type to gather herself up and find her courage- but looks could be decieving. He'd faced rungs in the ring that had the heart of bears. No strength, all heart.

"Prove it. Join me in the street and I can show you the way out." Of course, that meant he couldn't go looking for pups to take or food to scavage- but he'd gain a fully grown ally if she was good to her word, and had the guts to get herself out of the fenced yard.

As the female vanished, he crouched in the shadows of the brush and as time dragged on, he grew a little uncomfortable. Every moment he lingered was another moment he stood in the company of danger. Humans could be anywhere, waiting to capture him, waiting to toss him back into the ring...

Or worse.

Finally, the female hauled a chair over and managed to get herself up with only one obsticle left standing in her way. Dangerous eyes narrowed in the shadows as he wached her- fear lingering in her eyes, tension and uncertainty in her posture.

"If this stops you from freedom, you'd be better staying where you are, pet. Get up. Get out. Let's go."

Ualani:
His words reached her and she shivered on the cold stone. Better staying where she was... Better where she was. No, she couldn't go back into the yard, she wouldn't go back to that. Her eyes closed for a moment and she took a shuddering breath.
Ualani's blue eyes snapped wide, a determined look on her face. She looked down at the ground as she stood into a low crouch, scanning the ground for anything harmful to land on before she jumped down.

The landing was hard and it hurt her paws, but nothing that she couldn't bear.
"Alright. Let's go," she said softly, turning to where she had left the feral.

Rylis:
Rylis watched in silence as the female surged forward and sent herself up and over the wall. The landing looked a little painful but that was to be expected of a soft-pawed pet. THey didn't have to be quick on their feet.

"First lesson. Always hit the ground running." He rose up to his full height, a shorter but no less muscular than the other fighters commonly seen on the island. His ears rolled forward, missing a chunk here and there,. "Second lesson..."

He lunged out and brought his teeth around the collar about her neck. With a sharp tug of his jaws and a shove of his jaw, the leather circle slipped free and fell with a jingle to the ground. "Leave everything behind. Don't look back. Got it?"

Ualani:
Lani bared her teeth and jerked back when he lunged at her, but not fast enough. A quick burst of fear went through her, worrying that she had been wrong to trust him. But he had latched onto her collar and tore it off. She relaxed and looked to the collar. It was gone, the itch was gone. Before he could tell her something else, she grabbed the collar in her jaws and twirled, tossing it into the air. She watched it fly up and over, landing back in her yard.

"Everything of theirs is where it belongs. Now I'm ready to go," she said, flexed her paws, ready to follow him into the night.

Rylis:
Rylis threw a paw up to his forehead. Idiot girl. "....the masters could have seen that, idiot. Now we run."

Without another word, the wild mokai burst forward, his paws reaching and kicking at the ground , surging him forward in long, powerful strides. His lope was powerful and trained, massive shoulders rolled under a powerful mane and mantle of fur. He'd see if the little pet had any spring in her step now.

Ualani:
She wanted to tell him that the lighting was bad on the backyard. That they may have seen her form on the wall, but they wouldn't see the small collar. But he was off running before the words could come out.
Unwilling to be left behind, she sprang into a run after him, trying her best to catch up. She wasn't a fat housepet, her masters hadn't allowed it. Up until they had found she wasn't proper for showing, they had kept her fit with long walks and small portions of healthy, disgustingly dry food. Afterwards, it was the young masters who took her out when they wanted to. Her masters couldn't bother anymore with a pet that couldn't compete.

But despite this, she wasn't train to run. Her muscles were thin though her body was healthy. She wanted to call out to him, to beg him to slow down, to wait, but she couldn't breathe, let alone talk. All she could do was keep him in her sight as they ran through the darkness.

Rylis:
Rylis rounded a corner and hunched up against the wall. His bulky form pressed up against the wall, allowing the shadows the structure provided to cloak him from sight once more. The pet's claws clicked behind him, a painfully slow pace and a painfully loud sound cloaked only by the heavy breathing.

No humans. They were in the clear but the main road standing between their current location and the road that would lead them to freedom was well-lit.

"You are going to have to learn to run too." He whispered over as the female joined him. "And breathe."

Ualani:
"Yeah... I... know..." Ualani huffed when she pulled up next to him, breathing heavily. Her ears were flicked back, but she stayed standing. She was sore, but at least she wasn't collapsing. She looked around at the darkened town. She didn't hear anything but the normal sounds of the night. She didn't hear running feet or her name being called. But it seemed like every sound she made echoed in the night.

"What... What... now?" she asked slowly, looking to the male. She still didn't know his name, but now didn't seem the right time to ask him. The less time talking, the faster she would be out of this place and... safe.

Rylis:
"We be careful... run to the shadows, push close to the walls. If you hear something, freeze and keep low. If you smell something, look around. Find the source. If we're spotted-" He raised a paw to point over to the darkened shapes beyond the horizon. "FInd the hills. Run, don't look back."

He looked back to her, his eyes stern. "Until then, we proceed with caution."

Ualani:
Lani nodded slowly. He was very good at this, she wondered how often he had done it. Had it been like this when he escaped? Had someone helped him as he was helping her? A bit of admiration welled up inside her heart for him. He was risking being caught by the humans to help other Mokai escape. She had to wonder why he would do such a thing, what his motives were. But not now, she needed her breath to breathe, not to talk.

She studied the shapes in the distance, their placement and their appearance, memorizing them.
"Okay," she said softly, keeping her voice as low as possible. While she was mostly darkly-colored, the white accents on her fur would make hiding in the shadows more of a problem, but she figured if she kept close to him, there wouldn't be too much of a problem... if they didn't come across any humans, that is.

Rylis:
"Keep close. Go where I go." Without another word, the earth toned mokai padded out from his shelter to the shadow of a large garbage bin nessled against another building. Holding his breath, he raised his ears to listen. A human was walking not too far off but the steps were fading into the distance. After a few more heartbeats he bolted from the shadow to cross a larger street, his sleek back flashing in the dim lighting of a streetlight. He vanished into the shadows once more as he ducked behind a transport wagon.

Ualani:
She nodded again and waited for him to move.
When he darted out of their hiding place, she was at his heels, her body as low to the ground as she could afford and still run. It was hard to pull off, but she managed. Terror was starting to build up inside of her the longer they traversed the city. It wasn't that she was afraid of running away, more so that a human or an elder would catch them. What would happen if someone did? She didn't want to think about it.

Lani's ears tilted back as she moved beside the feral behind the wagon, listening to the night around them. She wasn't very built for active things, but her senses were a different matter. In the distance she could hear cartwheels, they sounded like they were getting closer, though at a crawling pace.

Rylis:
Rylis pressed himself low to the ground, his ears flattened back against the mantle along his head and neck, and his eyes narrowed to reduce the glare of the moon off of them. The cart was far off, but he'd not risk even being seen. If it meant hiding behind the cart for longer than he cared to- so be it.

His breathing evened out and his eyes panned into the movement of the vehicle. It was likely a patrol, just insuring that the citizens were safely in bed and that any criminals were off the streets. It was nearly five minutes before the sound of wheels faded and Rylis rose again. With a short, meaningful glance to his companion, he broke into a run and made for a nook between two buildings. The road out was just within sight.

Ualani:
Lani huddled next to him while they waited, listening to the sounds of the cart. Faint voices spoke words that she couldn't make out for a few heartbeats before fading away as the cart moved away from them again. She looked to her guide for the next move, catching his glance before he broke into another run. She hadn't been quite ready yet, but she was quick enough to react, a small space between them this time, but she could still see him.

Rylis:
Rylis glanced one way then the other, his ears rolling forward and back, listening for even the slightest sound in the empty streets.

"We're in the clear. From here- we run." He nodded towards the road leading outwards. "Don't look back, and don't stop until I do. Got it, pet?"

Ualani:
"I've got it," Lani replied, eyes focused on the road rather than her companion. Her legs had already begun to ache and she worried something would happen, something would stop her from getting away. But she would run, her life in a sense depended on it.

She waited for him to tell her to go or to take off himself.

Rylis:
Rylis tore forward after a few long, deep breath. Powerful legs kicked him forward, throwing his massive shoulders forward and back. It was with a trained, dangerous charging speed that the former fighter tore from his hiding place into the road and soon out into the grass of the wild lands beyond, his eyes cast towards the distant hills. Soon his tongue rolled from the corner of his mouth and his lungs began to burn. The thrill and adreniline of the escape had him pushing himself harder and harder. His home...

Ualani:
He was up and running before Lani could blink and the only thing she could do was surge after him. He was so fast, faster than her and he quickly put distance between them. But still she followed, determined to escape the confines of her life and into the harsh freedom of the wildlands. She didn't want to be just a tool of her masters, even if she was beloved by the young masters. How long would that have even lasted before they wanted puppies, too? She was almost an adult now. She knew how masters, especially young masters, got when it came to older Mokai and puppies.

She ached all over, but still she ran. Even when it felt like she couldn't anymore, she pushed herself. She wouldn't be left behind, she wouldn't be caught, she wouldn't go back.

Rylis:
Rylis pressed on until the city was nothing more than a few lights lost in the darkness of a ridged form behind them. His pace slowed and eventually became an even lope along the damp, spongey ground of the wild. Trees rose up out of the blackness around them, their branches blotting out the starlit sky and breaking up the moonlight. His eyes went wide as he navigated, sniffing out the trail he used that dusk to find his way to the city.

"So you got a name?"

Ualani:
Lani wanted to collapse by the time the male slowed down, but he kept walking and she couldn't stop. They walked in silence for a bit while she worked to catch her breath and ignore the shivering feeling crawling up her spine at the darkness of the forest around her. She knew this would be difficult and she would see it through, but that didn't mean she couldn't be a little scared.

"Ualani... What's yours?"

Rylis:
"Name's Rylis." He continued on, his ears high and his eyes alert. There weren't many things to worry about on the island- not for a Mokai at least. However, on the short list of predators and hostile creatures was the humans. He'd seen a few in the woods, transporting goods from the back of their equine mounts or trapping the smaller game for their own meals.

Soon the sound of water disrupted the relative quiet. Not the roaring waves of the ocean but rather a gentle trickle. He slowed his pace and threw a look over his shoulder. "Ah... you're gonna be thirsty. The water here's drinkable."

Ualani:
"Rylis." She softly tried the name out, testing the sound. It seemed like a good name to her. They walked in quiet for a while, the sounds of the forest pressing in on her.
But when he mentioned water, her ears perked up and her eyes widened. Water sounded heavenly at the moment, though a place to lie down and rest would be even better.

"Water sounds great. Oh, is there somewhere particular that we're heading to?" Lani asked, the tire in her body reflected in her voice.

Rylis:
"I got a place." He smirked as he pressed on, his pace easy but constant. he'd not linger too long- if the elders came looking for the missing pet, there could be trouble. Experienced of a fighter as he was, he'd be hard pressed to go toe to toe with an elder.

"There's a cave I found- pretty high up from here. You follow the river until you get to the falls. Just beyond that is a punchbowl- and just near there is a nice den.

Ualani:
Lani sighed rather happily. She knew a cave was certainly not as warm and comfortable as her home had been, she wasn't deluded into thinking that life in the wild would be easy. But a covered place to sleep by water, it sounded like the best possible scenario.
"It sounds like a really nice place," she replied, giving him a small smile. Her ears flicked back as she looked away, still smiling.

"And thank you, for helping me get away from there."

Rylis:
"Heh, it's a nice place. I never really saw the outside world like this when I was living with the humans. It was kind of a shock the first time around." He began climbing uphill, following the river but walking against the flow. "Now how are your paws in the water? We should walk in the stream a bit. It'll throw our scent off in case those elders are out sniffing about. The last thing we need is one of those after us."

Ualani:
Lani had a feeling it was more of a shock for him than it was for her. At least she had someone there with her, she wasn't on her own. Unless he had someone too, but then he hadn't talked about it, so she wasn't really sure. And she was going to have shelter, too, and someone to help her learn how to live out here. She really admired Rylis, for what he was doing and what he had probably done. And even if he hadn't and set her straight on that, she would still admire him. He seemed like a good sort.
"I'm not sure, I've never walked through running water before, not like this at least. But I can try," she replied, with a nod. That was her outlook on this new lifestyle. She might not be able to do something, but she could certainly try.

"Would the elders really come out this far, do you think?" she asked, moving closer to the water.

Rylis:
"You can't afford to take any risks." He loped over to the waters and slowly began wading himself in. He kept to the shallows and continued to move upstream. The rocks were slippery and the current was a little dangerous, but it wasn't something he didn't think the pet could handle.

"Just walk where I walk, don't loose balance, and don't go so deep you can't touch the ground."

Ualani:
She stepped into the cool water after him, following in his pawsteps as best as she could. Walking in the moving water against the flow was hard. The third step she took and her paw slipped, sending her neck into the water. She almost fell completely, but she managed to catch herself before her face dunked into the water.

Lani stood and shook a bit before following again.
"Good point... Is it just yo- us? Or are there others?" she asked quietly, not wanting to draw attention to them.

Rylis:
Rylis glanced back, his ears snapping upwards and his eyes going wide as his travel companion slipped into the water. She'd be cold tonight...but there was at least some warmth between the two of them.

"Ah...just me right now. I'm working on bringing others out here. It's not right to live our lives in a cage."

Ualani:
"Or under the thumbs of masters who forget we're not just possessions," she added with a small shake of her head. She was glad to be away from there, even if she would miss the comforts and the young masters. Just them for now, that sounded good. Lani wasn't used to a lot of Mokai in one place, let alone ones she had never met before. This way, she could get used to it little by little. How fortunate!

"You're really brave, going back into the settlement and rescuing others." More brave than she would ever be, that was for sure.

Rylis:
"Don't call them that." He snapped, whirling around to throw her a sharp look over his shoulder. "They aren't masters, they're enslavers. They pit us against our own kin for their entertainment! I knew good Mokai that died because of it. They aren't worth the pinky flesh they're mad out of. You got it?"

He let his glare linger for a moment longer before he plowed forward through the water, his posture tense. "I can't let others suffer the way I did. It's not right. And if I don't do something about it, I can't complain about it. Come on, pick up your feet."

Ualani:
Lani jerked back from him, flinching when he snapped at her. She hadn't meant to, that was what she always just called them that. There was no reason to get mad at her over it! No reason at all. Her ears flicked back and she frowned at him.

"Yeah, I understand that, but that doesn't mean you need to get mad at me over calling them that..." she replied, not terribly short with him, but clear that she wasn't happy with him snapping at her. That said, she moved a little faster, still being careful about the slippery stones.

Rylis:
"It's a steep learning curve out there." He motioned to the area around them. "Sometimes, you only got one chance to learn something. Yeah it's kind of a little matter, but you gotta break out of the pet mentality... or you're good as someone's chew toy."

He continued plowing forward, his ears laid back against his mantle. He'd learned that the hard way. Thinking that food would come easily had been his first mistake. He'd nearly starved to death during his first days in the wild. He half expected food to drop out of the sky or to find it laying around. Soon he'd become a scavanger, slipping into the town to eat out of dumpsters. Even that had become dangerous...

"You aren't a pet, no one's your master. What you do, you do on your own, got it?"

Ualani:
"I'm still a pet, it was what I was bred to be. I'll never be as strong as you or swim like a pearl diver, but I have my strengths, too," Lani replied, her argument sound in her mind. She understood that certain Mokai were bred for certain lifestyles, it was why she was smaller than Rylis. And while she knew her body would adapt in one way or another to this new life, there were some things that wouldn't change. And yet...

"But I will not be someone's possession, never again." There was a true conviction in her tone. Never again.

Rylis:
"You're only what you tell yourself you are." He jumped up to one of the stones splitting the water and turned to her, his posture a little more relaxed. "I was a fighter. I was talon and fang fodder... but now I'm my own mokai. I decide what I am. Blood only runs so deep."

He flicked his tail and jerked his head upwards. They were in the shadow of a large series of cliffs surrounded by waterfalls and thick foliage. "Welcome home."
