Ren was nervous.

He shouldn't have been. After all, he was only going to see someone close to him. Alessa may have been his ex-ghoulfriend, but he still cared about her a great deal.

And since he had not seen her in a very long time, he was missing her something fierce. With the happiness that came from his newfound romantic relationship with LW also came the equally unhappy realization that he had not seen or heard from the two other people in their little group of four for too long.

It had been making Ren depressed for weeks. He had slouched around, wanting to go see them, but Alessa had been gone and Gabrian had been busy, and Ren had not found the time to see any of them. He had planned on visiting everyone's homes over the summer break, but that had not worked out, considering that Ren had been dragged back (unwillingly, he might add), to his own house. After that, school had started, and he had found himself drowning in work, the festival, and the fact that he now could sleep most of the way through the night again.

Though admittedly it felt a little lonely sleeping without anyone beside him.

Now, standing at the door to Alessa's dorm, Ren fidgeted uneasily. He did not know what exactly to say, especially since he had not had a chance to tell either Alessa or Gabrian about the fact that he was now dating LW. He knew what Gabrian would say, but what of Alessa? He still felt terrible about their breakup, as if it were his fault alone, but though they had ended amicably - though a little bittersweetly as well - he still felt awkward.

He had dated Alessa. He had loved Alessa, still loved Alessa, in spite of their breakup. She was a wonderful, beautiful, amazing person. Ren had not ever felt bad when he was around her, since she had a way of making him feel...normal.

Which was not really an easy thing to do.

Their breakup had been sad, yes, but it hadn't been hurtful or painful - something for which Ren was extremely grateful for.

Even if standing here now was awkward.

But he wanted to see her anyway. So, after a moment's hesitation, Ren reached up and knocked on the nagual's door.

Jack damn it, Alessa had so much work. She blew a few scattered curls out of her face as she scribbled frantically in her notebook. She flipped a few pages in the book, sighing when she saw even more problems to complete. She hardly felt like she was making any progress at all.She supposed that was what she got for being forced to stay home a little longer as the school year began. It meant she was behind and she had a lot of catching up to do. She hadn't even been able to visit anyone yet, she thought bitterly. She dropped her head in her book for a moment, as if that would somehow make her less tired or her task less daunting.

At the sudden knock at her door she jumped, spilling her book onto the floor. Shaking her head, she slipped out of her seat and padded over across the carpet. She was in PJs, that's how long she had been working. She didn't bother to fix her tousled hair; it wouldn't make her look any less haphazard anyway. Upon opening the door she blinked in surprise, eyes wide.

"Ren!" She cried and flung her arms around the boil's neck in a hug. "I've missed you!" Jack, she hadn't seen him in what felt like a lifetime.

He barely had time to say "Hi, Alessa" before there was a scuffle and a cry and suddenly Ren had a mouthful of reddish brown hair in his face, his friend's arms around his neck.

He hugged her back, of course. Tightly and warmly, nosing into her hair affectionately. She looked as she always had, though she had maybe grown a half inch and her face was narrower, her hair longer, more wavy.

And she still smelled of cinnamon and apples. The thought was reassuring to Ren, since he had not seen her for so long and missed just talking to her. It was good to know that she had not changed, at least not much.

"I missed you too," he said, as he pulled away, briefly cupping Alessa's face in both of his hands and smiling down at her before reaching up to ruffle her hair. "You look as if you've been concentrating hard. What have you been up to lately, hmmm?"

Alessa couldn't help it. The last few months had been the loneliest she'd ever felt. It was ironic, really; she had dear friends now, and being away from them was worse than when she'd not had them at all. It was so good to see a familiar face. More than that, to feel a familiar embrace, a familiar warmth. She squeezed him once last time in her arms before she let him pull away.

"Sorry, was a little over enthusiastic." She laughed a little, offering a sheepish smile. He looked like he'd grown some since she'd last seen him and his hair was definitely longer. He looked really good, making her realize she probably looked a mess. Well, that was alright. It didn't matter, as long as he was here.

"I've been catching up on all my work...coming back late has left me rather behind." She waved her hand, as if it were nothing. It was funny how just seeing him had made her forget how overwhelmed she felt. "How have you been? What have you been up to?" She seemed genuinely eager to know it all right here and now.

Just because he and Alessa had broken up the romantic side of their relationship did not mean they had broken up the friendship side of things. Ren still felt as strongly towards Alessa as he ever had - just without the added romance. She was one of the only people he trusted implicitly, without the need to question anything.

"I don't mind over enthusiasm," he told her with amusement, twirling one strand of her curly auburn hair absently around his finger before he brushed past her and flopped onto her bed - yet another very familiar gesture, especially coming from Ren himself.

He peered at her beneath half lowered lashes, stifling a yawn. "I'm sure you'll catch up," Ren answered firmly, and sat up, pushing himself to lean forward, his knees to his chest and his arms around them. Alessa's question made him hesitate, however; Ren's heart seemed to seize in his chest and he almost bit his lip, hoping the anxiety didn't show on his face.

What if she hates me? What if she dislikes me going out with LW? What then?

He couldn't stand the thought of Alessa hating him.

"I've been okay," Ren replied truthfully. "I passed my last year examination, so I'm a second year now - I hope you are too, since I know LW is and it would suck if not everyone was. I haven't, er...heard from Gabrian yet, though."

He paused, wondering what he should say. Then it all came out in a rush, very garbled together.

"OhandLWandIaredating."

His face was so red it felt like it might burst with the heat.

Alessa couldn't help but smile as he made himself at home. It was something she'd never realized she'd miss, the sudden appearances of her friends popping in without warning. She smiled at him and shut the door before going over and taking a spot in her chair. She sat with her feet under her, leaning back and watching him with interest.

"Well I'm glad to hear all those naps didn't manage to get you held back like I warned," she teased her eyes crinkling a little at the edges with her smile. "I passed too, though I don't know about Gabe...I haven't seen him either. But then, I haven't seen anyone, just you." She looked a little wistful for a moment, but at least there was little sadness there.

She stopped and looked at him when he spat out something that resembled words. She blinked, taking a moment to separate out the words in her head. Finally she grinned widely. "Really? About time! I always knew there was something between you two."
