Kail stood awkwardly as his mother introduced herself, her new husband and him. He resented the fact that everybody assumed he was both of their child, and that he had to dress in these fashionable clothes. Uncomfortable, he smiled politely at every high-flying lawyer or doctor that was introduced, but refused to shake their hands. He'd been told not to touch people tonight - he gave the excuse that he'd been working on robotics today and they might be dirty. Which was a half-truth. He had been working on robotics all day, but there was no chance of them being dirty beyond a microscopic level - that was enough for Kail to consider it truthful enough to tell though. He tugged awkwardly at his cufflinked shirt, and sighed quietly in relief as his mother drifted off with Robert, heading for a quiet corner of the room to sit and read his book.

Yet another of these lovely events. His mother seemed to have her schedule loaded up with these events, when she wasn't working of course. He'd once again tried to wiggle his way free, unlike in the past where he'd mostly just go along with it. Citing a need to do school work, and having a lot to do. It wasn't a lie, just a half truth, he did have a lot of school work but the reason for the build up was duty and the homework being set back where he could get it done and have it done just in time. He was doing things at the very last minute. There had been no escape though, he was stuck going to this gathering of people and it wasn't even an art gallery or anywhere he cared to be.
Someone had decided on some hall for this nights social gathering. Unlike Kail he didn't have to circle around shaking hands and playing nice. Most of the people here knew him and with little nods he went to find a drink, ice water or maybe someone had been thoughtful enough to get some sort of juice, finding the only thing to drink aside from some form of alcohol was water he settled for that. Now to find himself some corner to sit and observe from.
That's when he spied the pink haired teen, interesting he'd never seen him before. Making his way over, his free hand in the pocket of the black suit he wore.

As soon as he'd opened the novel, Kail's posture became instantly less tense as he absorbed himself in the book. The Difference Engine was an interesting book, based upon Charles Babbage's original thinking engine, presuming it had ever been built. He was slightly disappointing by the lack of mention of Ada Lovelace in the book, who had written the 'programme' for the analytical engine, but it didn't really mention Charles much either, so that was acceptable he supposed. It was intriguing how it was developed, the complex machinations in the plot. Some of the protagonist's actions were distinctly illogical though, badly thought out. Kail put this down to some of the emotional plot threads he didn't quite get. He was unaware of the approaching person until they appeared right in front of him.
He pushed his Coke-Bottle classes up, as he'd put them on to read, and stared up at the other teen. Guessing, Kail would put him around the same age as him - so sixteenish? He was well aware he looked much younger to others, though, with his baby face and diminutive height. Finally his manners kicked in.
"Good evening?"

The book wasn't anything he'd have known. He didn't fancy himself remotely capable of understanding mechanics or engines. His strengths of knowledge were founded elsewhere, which was fine by him. He was more than happy with the strengths he possessed. He did wonder though, as he approached, what was with bringing a book to an event; it wasn't normal behavior. At least it wasn't normal for these sorts of things, people didn't bring books or sit and read. They did like he did...sat and were bored.
"Good evening." If the other was short than so was Alexandre, being that he was only two inches taller. Boyish yes, but perhaps a little feminine as well. If he were to take his hair out of the hair holder he'd appear even more feminine. At least the clothing helped to make him look more masculine, not that feminine or masculine appearances mattered all too much to him.
"Your new, aren't you." He'd never seen him, and he was sure he would have seen him before now if he had been to any events like this before.

Kail's shoulders twitched lightly as he closed his book, resigned to social interaction. He puzzled momentarily over Alexandre's gender before noting the masculine cut of his clothes - and he was pretty sure they were wearing the same label. Not that he actually cared about that in any way shape or form, usually found wearing charity-shops oversized castoffs, but his mother had drilled him about it so if anybody said anything he could reply. He was going to have a perfect, normal conversation.
"....New?....No? I have existed, in fact, for sixteen years, though I suppose it would depend on what you were comparing me to. To a Crane Fly, who live scarcely twenty-four hours, I am as much the landscape as a tree. To a mountain I am as new as you are to meet-"
....Ohhhhhh.
Kail's cheeks flushed, red-pink flush covering his nose and cheeks, green eyes dodging the others eyes as he gleaned the meanings. Even more awkward and formal, he spoke again.
"My sincerest condolonces for my misinterpreted view of your meaning. I have attended the likes of these functions before, but not in the realm of Destiny City, as previously my family lived elsewhere. With the inevitable breakdown of my parents marriage, my father and I have relocated here, where he matured from a child to an adult. My mother has decided therefore she is now eligible to attend these events, as this is her social circle."
As if on cue, his mother's titter came across the room, joined by Robert's laugh, hand around her waist.

Listening to the other, holding back his laughter. This person was certainly an odd one, odder than anyone he'd met. He might have, in the past, been accused of taking things literally but this person really took things literally. He wanted to correct them, he really did, but it seemed that before he could they'd noticed their error.
If he was polite this person was beyond him, he didn't know how someone could be this polite. He didn't ask though, he was afraid of what sort of answer he'd get. He had to cover up his laughter, with his right hand. Finally he dropped his hand and taking a minute he calmed enough to talk.
"I thought so, you are not someone I've seen in the past or someone I know." The others parents were separated and he lived here with his father. His mother was here and with someone else, his father was...seeing someone else? He wasn't sure if that's what the child to adult thing meant. But that was how he was taking it.
"May I inquire as to your name?" Offering his own hand to the other. "Alexandre Evans." He spoke, introducing himself to the other. "It is a pleasure and welcome to Destiny City." He wanted to make some comment about moving to a city with terrorists but he refrained, it wouldn't be proper to do so here. But he had to have seen the news and heard about the missing people and the terrorists in the city, right?

Kail nodded back politely, owlishly fixated upon Alexandre's face as he talked. When he finished, with a usual introduction, he shook his head and spoke.
"I am not pe-...I am not shaking hands tonight due to working on robotics all day and them possibly still having grime upon them."
He had almost slipped up there and said permitted. But he had saved himself so it was okay.
"My name is Kail Cubrin. Thankyou for your welcome to Destiny City. I most appreciate it."
And now he had absolutely nothing to say. He blinked again, fingers delicately tapping a rythmn on the bench, before blurting out an appopriate phrase that had (finally) come to mind.
"Where do you go to school?"

"You do robotics? Interesting, and something I know nothing about but must admit to finding interesting." There was something interesting about this one, robotics...that took talent and a good deal of knowledge. It wasn't some simple hobby that didn't take a lot of know how and knowledge, like knitting or something equally simple.
"I attend Meadowview, the local public school." Something which might surprise some, considering he had the money to go elsewhere and yet chose to attend a public school. "I find it meets my...requirements. Where are you attending...and perhaps if you want or need any help finding places in the city or simply wish for some company." He wanted to offer his help but he was also wanting to get to know Kail better, learn who he was on a personal level.
