After the recent news, all the rumors and hostility, Set'al was suddenly very glad he had transferred to Trine, and not to Malvren or to Benden. Originally, he'd just liked the weather, but now...well, there were two Weyrs he was very happy he didn't belong to. Still, even without living at the center of the drama, it was beyond disturbing. A Weyrwoman had been murdered, and it was possible another Weyr had been involved. He wasn't too quick to assume that that was indeed the case, based only on a knife, but the implications were dire regardless.

Though he may have been removed from it, the situation had him unusually restless. Whatever was going on, this was without a doubt only the beginning, and there was every possiblity that it wouldn't stay limited to the two rival Weyrs. His peaceful new life at Trine might not stay so peaceful after all.

Mine, you have that look again, Pipith observed from his sunny spot by the lake.

Look? Set'al's expression changed to one of protest. What look? I haven't got a look!

Sanza was not ordinarily the sort to laze around on the beach, or even venture that way more than by chance. Not that she avoided it at all. She simply had too many other things to do and occupy herself that it only very rarely occurred to her to rest, relax, and enjoy the scenery. It was, after all, very much worth enjoying.

But today was a chore day. Maomith needed scrubbing and her straps needed to be oiled and the pair, rider and dragon, were one more level of on alert than usual. The news of Benden's loss had echoed all around Pern. Another death. Another murder. More bad blood between the Weyrs. It was a shame more than it was a crime, particularly if the worries that another Pass was coming had any validity at all.

Maomith led the way toward the water, Sanza following with a bucket of soapsand and a long brush. The crimson paused, briefly, to consider Pipith and his rider before twisting her neck to look back at Hers, who gave her a nod and gestured her on. With a brief, mid-tone rumble of greeting for the bronze, Maomith waded in and Sanza followed her to the water's edge, then bent to put her tools down.

Glancing over as she worked on tugging her boots off, she offered, "Set'al."

"Oh, hey, Sanza," Set'al responded, sitting up a little straighter now that they had company. A pair of their new wingmates - fortunately, a very distinctive pair, because the bronzerider wasn't completely confident that he knew absolutely everyone and their dragon's names yet. Not that he had any bias at all against green- and blue-riders, there were just so many more of them, and remembering which of nine greens was which took longer than two crimsons.

Of course, if Pipith had his way, they'd get to know all of them very well. Set'al was less than enthusiastic about such plans.

Maomith, the little bronze acknowledged politely, stretching and resettling his wings.

"How're you two?"

It was indeed easier to remember names and dragons among the less common-colored, but Sanza also had a host of tricks for remembering faces and the names attached. She'd been practicing those things since before she'd ever left the hold. She knew his name, she knew his dragon's, as well, and she knew that neither had done their weyrling training in Trine.

Maomith swiveled her head back to regard the bronze with one blue eye, then tilted it a little, almost a reflection of the nod her rider had given his. Pipith, she returned levelly. Are you resting?

"Well enough, all things considered." Her braid slid over her shoulder when she bent to set her boots aside and roll up her trousers. She didn't flick it back. "You and yours? You look...comfortable."

Set'al and practice of any sort didn't usually go together, at least outside of dragonriding. Practice took discipline, and discipline was something the former Runner lacked almost entirely. What he did have was Pipith's doing, a result of his dragon's constant pushing over the last several Turns. They had to be on time, they had to perform well, and if those things didn't happen...the bronze could be pretty miserable to be around.

I had my bath, so I am drying, Pipith was quick to answer the striking Atypical. To say that he was resting might imply that he was being lazy, and he certainly didn't want that!

Set'al grinned and leaned back with his weight on his hands. "He's had us flying all morning, it's about time he gave me a break."

With a new wing to find his place in and impress, his bonded was being even worse than usual.

Drying was much preferable to simply lying around, waiting for something--or nothing--to happen. She didn't say as much directly, but Maomith made that hint of approval fairly clear. I will have my bath now, she announced. We have eaten. Next, we will fly.

Yes, Set'al certainly did look comfortable. Fair enough. Everyone deserved his moment, and he wasn't missing out on anything just now, not with most attention on the other two weyrs, waiting to see who would do, or say, what to one another. Sanza waited to see like all the rest, of course, but she wasn't going to let speculation change her routine.

She dug the long-handled brush deep into her bucket of sand, then waded out to Maomith and climbed atop the dragon with practiced ease so she could begin the process of scrubbing her down. "Were you flying for a specific reason, or just to better learn our sky?"

With that potential misunderstanding averted, Pipith could go back to relaxing, his eyes a pleasant blue. It was too early to tell yet, but the crimson could be worthwhile company. She did clearly have a schedule, which was something he approved of. He liked to have one, too, although His didn't always follow the plan. The water and the sky are both good today, he observed conversationally, something Set'al tried to encourage. And the wherries. Perhaps I will have another when I am dry.

Flicking his gaze to his rider, he sent to the man, Mine, you look lazy like that. You at least ought to sit up straight again. Or pretend you are doing something.

Set'al had to refrain from rolling his eyes. Like what, Pip? There's nothing to do out here that I haven't already done. "A bit of both," he then answered Sanza. "Drillmaster over there likes to practice, and knowing the place is just as important as the maneuvers. I think both are going pretty well."
