Jetta grew up in Mossdeep City in the Hoenn region, where her mother was an astronaut and her father was a submariner. With her parents both devoted to their demanding jobs, Jetta was left to her own devices much of the time. She spent most of it on the beach to the west of her island home, swimming, windsurfing, and of course playing with pokémon.
While a great many of the children on the island chose to leave the education system and become pokémon trainers the first chance they got, Jetta's parents refused to allow her to leave school until she'd got the kinds of qualifications they thought she should be capable of. However, without their support, time and attention, the high expectations they had for Jetta weighed heavy on her shoulders. Over time they caused her to develop a defeatist attitude.
Thanks to all her hard work (as well as the intellect she inherited from her parents) Jetta passed her exams and came away from school with some good qualifications. Unfortunately the results were not good enough to get her into the sorts of academic institutes her parents expected her to go on to attend.
After the resulting videophone argument, Jetta's parents both decided to take some leave from their work, determined to 'fix' their daughter.
The discussions went on for three days, with Jetta offering no reasons, no excuses and no explanations for her 'failure', and her parents assuring her that she was smarter than the results suggested, questioning what had driven her to 'give up on life', and insisting that if she didn't work hard enough she'd never be able to do she wanted.
Jetta pounced on the last remark; she asked her parents if they knew what life that was - if they knew what she wanted to do with herself - and neither could answer. Helping them to see that they lived their lives for themselves, in outer space and at the bottom of the ocean - and not, as they always asserted, with her, for her - Jetta explained that the life she wanted for herself was athletic, rather than academic.
Finally agreeing that she should be able to travel if that was what she wanted, and that it would in fact be valuable life experience whatever career route she decided to go down, Jetta's parents bought six pokéballs and gifted them to her, so that wherever she went and whatever she did, she'd always be safe and never be alone.

Progress:

Route 22 (Viridian City):
Jetta entered Kanto, having first headed the wrong way (towards the Indigo Plateau) and was soon set upon by a mankey. The pokémon ate her cookies (white chocolate - yum) and attacked Gooper. It then set upon a female Nidoran and Jetta took the chance to run. Unfortunately her intrigue got the better of her and she ended up hanging back to shout commands at the mankey, to help it win the battle. After that the mankey wanted a real battle, so stole Gooper's pokéball and started to fight. The battle didn't last long and the mankey won, leaving Jetta without any usable pokémon.

Viridian City Streets :
Jetta was jumped on by the mankey, who she couldn't shake loose. A man named Mister Frederick Hummel happened by and asked what the trouble was. With the help of his drowzee he freed Jetta from the mankey's grip, then led her back to his home for some cocoa. Jetta soon became uncomfortable, and got the impression that Hummel was a gym badge thief. She managed to escape without harm when Missus Phelps interrupted. As it transpired, Missus Phelps was in fact Officer Jenny, who was investigating who she called Hummel the Hoarder. She gave Jetta a flyer with details of Hummel's pokémon, then sent her on her way.

Route 1 North (Viridian City):
Jetta read about Hummel and his pokémon while staying the night at the pokémon centre, and thought some more about it the next morning, while on her way to Pallet Town. She also thought about what pokémon she should choose to accept from Professor Oak, ahead of arriving at the laboratory.

Pokémon Lab:
Jetta arrived and learned that three other trainers were receiving pokémon that day: Reginald Finch, a nerd; Petra Freiberg, a bossy-boots; and Solomon, a selfish brat. Reginald took a bulbasaur, Petra a squirtle and Solomon a charmander. Petra decided on a chimchar, which was also on offer. Professor Rowan, who recognised Jetta's family name when introduced to her over videolink, sent the chimchar and Jetta thanked the professors, before heading out on her journey.

Pallet Town Streets:
Right outside the lab Jetta watched a battle between Reginald's bulbasaur and Solomon's charmander, which the grass type won thanks to Solomon's ineptitude. Reginald challenged Jetta next, for a whitewash, and things seemed to be going his way because his bulbasaur had learned vine whip. However, Jetta's chimchar unleashed a focus punch at the perfect time to win the match. Naming the pokémon Coal, Jetta showed her pokédex to Reginald and Petra - including an entry for latios - then the group set off, heading for Pewter City.

Route 1 South (Pallet Town):
Jetta and Reginald each battled a dozen pokémon or so as they travelled along the route, before they came across Solomon, training his much-improved charmander, who challenged Reginald to a match. The charmander used its fire attacks to down Reginald's bulbasaur, and then made even lighter work of Petra's squirtle. Next Solomon challenged Jetta, who he was surprised to learn had a wooper. Gooper knocked out the charmander in three moves, and then Solomon's pineco went down to Coal. Coal was not impressed and a big argument erupted. Annoyed and upset, Jetta travelled the rest of the route alone, toward Viridian.

Viridian City Pokémon Centre:
Jetta rested her pokémon in the pokémon centre and got some advice from Nurse Joy about travelling through Viridian Forest. Just as Jetta was about to leave, Nurse Joy called her back and handed her an envelope with her full name written on the front. The nurse said that it was handed to her by a man earlier in the day, but there was no further information. Rather than open it there and then, Jetta headed out to the streets and continued toward the forest, in order to stay ahead and away from Solomon, Reginald and Petra.

Viridian City Streets:
Jetta read the letter that Nurse Joy had given her. It turned out to be a message from Hummel, warning her to watch over her shoulder. Jetta brought out Coal to sit on her bag and keep watch, where he stayed perched quite contently. Before long she was on the outskirts of the forest, thinking about first getting through it, then taking on the Pewter City Gym.

Viridian Forest:
Jetta saw a bug catcher - Tiny - running from a trainer - Glint - and intervened. Coal attacked Glint's growlithe, but the growlithe didn't fight back. Glint explained what was going on and Jetta apologised. They were all going to go their separate ways when Jetta explained that she hadn't been through the forest before and could do with some help. Glint offered to take her as far as the cave he was focussed on, in which a lake had been poisoned by some seviper. When they got to the cave the found that the poison had gone. Jetta thought Coal had been poisoned, and then blew up at Glint when he drank some of the water too. It turned out though that a suicune had cleansed the water, and Jetta's pokédex registered it as it fell to the ground. Glint cased after the suicune and Jetta chased after him until they reached the surface--the legendary pokémon vanished.
Jetta and Glint had a 2v2 battle then, which Glint won, Gruff beating Coal, then Gooper beating Gruff and Squirbert beating Gooper. Glint then left to carry on with his own business, leaving Jetta to follow the path through the forest.
Before leaving the forest Jetta decided to try to catch a pokémon. As she found a secluded area she heard a twig snap and realised that someone was following her. At first when a shroomish came out of the grass Jetta thought that that was all, but she soon realised that there was something more. Unfortunately she tripped over the shroomish in surprise and was doused in a spore attack, which knocked her out. When she woke she had a splitting headache and tried to flee. She didn't go very far as it was too dark to see, so she hid in a hollowed-out tree stump, where she was soon found by whom or whatever was following her.
The tail turned out to be a drowzee - Hummel's drowzee - who attacked and seemed to have the best of Coal. Coal prevailed, however, using a shadow claw attack and then learning flame wheel at the perfect moment. Unfortunately Hummel's drowzee poisoned Coal, so Jetta knew she had to rush to get out of the forest. She went to get Gooper's pokéball and have her help find the way out but instead found that she'd accidentally caught a shroomish, which - luckily - was able to take her straight to Pewter.

Pewter City Streets:
Jetta came out of the forest into Pewter and was beckoned over by a young woman - Auburn - who said she was a training pokémon doctor and could help to heal Coal. So Jetta went into the house, where Coal was treated and she was given some Lavaridge Cookies and Cocoa. Auburn showed Jetta to her dad's office then, so she could sleep on the lounger in there.
The next morning Dr. Falleen woke Jetta and after some confusion and panic they sat down together to have some coffee and a muffin each and talked about all sorts of things. When Jetta left she had a very good impression of Dr. Falleen, who chased after her to give her her hat back and tell her he'd direct Auburn to the gym once she was awake.
