Hel wasn’t what you would call a pursuer of the fine arts, but, she was a visual kind of ghoul! So while she may not have understood the meaning behind half the works at an art exhibit here in town, she did appreciate just looking at some art in general. That didn’t stop her from at least trying to ponder the meaning behind some of the works though.

It was in front of a large canvas that was splashed with shades of gray, blue and purple, that the valkyrie stood, her head tilted to the side as she stared. She was staring so hard one thought the canvas might erupt into flames, and her wings twitched in agitation. Nope, she couldn’t understand why some other visitors were gawking over this work and that was bothering her. She was stubborn enough to stand there for a long while, hoping the answer might come to her. “Ugh…there isn’t even a battle going on in this one…” Hel muttered.

If she kept it up though, her expression might start reflecting another painting she saw earlier.

Malodore hadn't ever seen much in the way of fine arts, other than Ettore's work, the frescos around the Casa, assorted images in books, and whatever was hanging on the walls of the various dormitories. Not that dorm decor counted as fine art; no matter what the demons thought, half the stuff in there was not fine art. It was just tacky, at least in Malodore's opinion.

Thus, in the interest of Experiencing New Things, the plague doctor had ventured into Halloween Town proper to examine a genuine gallery, a display of ostensibly certified Fine Art, or so it assumed. It had been expecting to be deeply moved, of course.

It was, instead, deeply puzzled. To the plague doctor's mind, Fine Art was marked by skillful rendering and accurate depiction. This appeared to be just paint slopped onto canvases, without even any interesting FEAR-infusions...

Yet, as it rounded the corner into the next room of the gallery, what it saw gave it pause. Not the art, but instead the small winged form staring at another piece. Valkyrie. Not... not Brynhild, no; her hair was different. But perhaps she might know the little ghoul that Malodore itself had once known?

Suddenly nervous, Malodore sidled up to the ghoul. "Ah... buon giorno?" it said, making a game attempt at starting the conversation.

Hel’s foot started to tap impatiently and out of frustration the more she stared at it. The crease in her brow grew deeper and deeper, and eventually her hands reached up to grasp the ends of her braided pigtails and tug on them. She couldn’t figure it out, not one bit! All it looked like to her was someone getting sloppy and tossing colors onto the canvas, and to make it worse it didn’t even tell a story!

By the time she was approached by another being, it nearly looked like the valkyrie was trying to hang herself with her braided pig tails, and when a voice spoke she paused. The ghoul spun on her heel, instantly letting go of her pigtails as she stared up at the plague doctor, and the irritation she was feeling at the painting just melted away in favor of interest and curiosity. “Uh…” What did it just say? “…Hello there, friend!” The reaper greeted back in a language that was hopefully understandable. “...Is there something you need?”

"Ah! Si, sorry to bother you, I just... you remind me of someone I used to know," it said, awkwardly. "A young Valkyrie girl by the name of Brynhild, ah..."

Of course, now that it had actually spoken, it felt a bit stupid. There had to be hundreds of valkyries in Halloween, if not more; it knew there were other plague doctor houses, but it had never met a plague doctor not of its own family. The same was probably true for her.

Hel gave a wave of her hand dismissively. “Oh, you’re not a bother at all!” In fact, Malodore was a in fact a very welcomed random encounter. The plague doctor had managed to save what was left of her sanity with its appearance!

As it mentioned Brynhild though, the ghoul’s face immediately shifted into a pleasantly surprised expression. “Brynhild?” She echoed excitedly and gave an energetic nod of her head, grinning. It just so happened that she did know this valkyrie! “I know her! She’s a little bundle of radiating moonshine, that one, yes?” The valkyrie laughed, clasping her hands together. Though when Hel had first met her…that wasn’t the case…and she hadn’t seen Brynhild for years after that…but before she was accepted to the Academy, there she was again, and a real spitfire too!

Malodore tensed, its eyes widening behind the lenses - surely not, surely she was thinking of another valkyrie. There was no way... "A-ah, perhaps... she would be small..." It gestured at her approximate height. "And... thin, though perhaps not thin now, once she got better. She was ill for a very long time, ah..."

Its beak closed with a clap, as if stunned. It truly had no idea what to say.

Hel was easily excitable, and as Malodore gestured the younger valkyrie’s height, the reaper pointed at the gesture with recognition. “Ah, you’re spot on!” She didn’t seem to doubt that they were indeed talking of the same little ghoul, especially not after it brought up her illness. “Yes! She had…Void’s Rot?” Hel made a face. Such a disgusting illness for such a young thing to have had! “But now, she is wonderful, and around ten years of age, I believe! She has healthy fair skin, long pale hair.” Hel made ringlet motions with her fingers, “The bluest eyes I’ve ever seen, and one can not keep her on the ground for more than a moment or two!”

The reaper laughed, delighted at recalling the memories of a friend from near home, before her eyes widened. “Ah…so you know her too, then?” She smiled widely at the plague doctor.

"Da tutto ciò che è profano," Malodore said, very quietly."It is... the very same, it must be. So she is well, then? Happy and healthy and enjoying her life?"

It asked the question almost fearfully, as if it could not bear to hear the answer. Hel's own query went unanswered, for now.

The reaper nodded her head energetically, her braided pigtails bouncing from the movement. “Oh, very well! How she is now is a far, far cry from when she was ill. She zips and soars around town, chases other scarelings around, and I never see her without a smile on her face!” Hel beamed. “She often talks about her savior as well! She said it truly was a miracle…” Here the ghoul trailed off, thoughtful. Apparently the ghoul was rather close to having her soul guided, but was saved from the brink by her doctor…the reaper was rather impressed by that!

As Hel trailed off, she looked over the tall figure of the plague doctor once more, and looked excited when she caught sight of an Amityville Academy student pin. “Oh…! You are a student as well, friend? Come, come, let’s get out of here then.” The ghoul made a face, because this museum was lame indeed. “I have a photo of young Brynhild I can show you!”

Savior. Unexpectedly, tears prickled at Malodore's eyes; it blinked them away. "I, ah... si. I am Malodore," it said, after a moment. For some reason it couldn't quite name, it was reluctant to identify itself as the mentioned 'savior'. "I am glad that she is doing well," it added, quickly.

Hel held out a dark hand for the plague doctor to shake, grinning. “It’s an honor to meet you, friend! My name is Hel.”

The reaper gave another firm nod of her head. “Yes, very well!” She tilted her head, and asked her question once more. “How is it you know young Brynhild?” Maybe the next time she ran into the smaller valkyrie in town, she could inform her of this plague doctor she had met at the Academy!

Of course she would ask how it knew Brynhild - it was a perfectly normal question, under the circumstances. But the words still made a sudden chill run down Malodore's spine. It had healed the young Valkyrie girl, yes, but it had done so in defiance of the treatment her family had sought. It had broken faith with them in a sense...

But it had also cured their daughter. And Hel had spoken of Brynhild's savior. "I saw her in the, ah... the Casa Cirurgien. Where she was cared for by plague doctors, si..." It hesitated, unsure of how much else it should say. It was entirely possible that Brynhild's family would be angry or offended by the incident, despite everything.

Hel waited patiently for a response to her question, her gaze drifting around to the art pieces surrounding them. Oh…they were still in this…’art museum’ weren’t they? They really should get out of here.

The reaper’s mouth made an ‘oh’ shape as Malodore finally informed her of its connection to the young valkyrie. “You were there when she was ill?” She echoed. That was rather interesting! When Brynhild had been committed to the Casa, it might as well have been like she dropped off the face of Halloween Town to Hel. She hadn’t heard about the young ghoul at all or seen her during that time, but talking to someone who had? It was very interesting.

“…Ah…say there friend, how about we get out of here?” The reaper offered cheerfully. They could continue this conversation elsewhere! This art exhibition was pretty lame now.

"Ah, si, I was there..." Malodore began, then relaxed as she suggested moving somewhere else. "Of course. You also attend Amityville Academy, do you not? If so, our paths carry us the same way."

Which meant, of course, that it would have to explain later. Should explain, really; Malodore sighed inwardly. Why was it so concerned? It had a thousand things it could be worrying about that were of more significance to its current existence than Brynhild's fate... and yet, it had always hoped she had gone on to a better and happier life. That it had made her fate better, not worse...

Yep, Malodore was not off the hook! “I do!” Hel replied with a firm nod of her head. “I only arrived there a while ago. How long have you been there for, friend?” As she asked, the reaper started to lead the way out, holding the door open for the plague doctor as well.

Ah…so…” Hel started, peering up at Malodore curiously. “Were you there with Brynhild the entire time she was ill?”
