Im in a kinda tight spot. I am a very good trombonist (tromboner?), and next year, my sister wants me to be a Drum Major. I wanna be a drum major, but then there won't be any trombone section (we have 4 seniors currently).
What should I do?

If your band is seriously in need of trombones, stick to it. Besides, it's probably better to have someone with experience as a leader (whether its defined as section leader or just being a good role model). If your band can get trombone parts covered in other sections, it might be a good idea to go for DM.

Another way of looking at it is that this depends a lot on band/section size and whether you have other people who could do DM/trombone. You should probably wait and ask your directors how many trombones they expect to be in the next freshman class and decide based on that (I don't suppose there's a need to rush and make the decision now). If it's a decent number (I'd say ~4 if you're going to lose four seniors), then go ahead and try for DM.

Hope this is of some help.

Thank you. It helps alot. I guess I'm staying on Trombone. We have 30 wind players, and 7 low brass (including me and my section).

Do what you want I really wish I had tried out for Drum Major, but I had the same worry as you, What would happen if they lost their only trombone. In a way I regret alot not doing it.

Main Idea: Do what you WANT to do not what you THINK you have to do. They will find a way to cover the part!

In my band, there was only one trombone player last year, so they just switched them to baritone anyway. We haven't had a trombone player since, nor have we really missed the sound all that much.

If you have baritone players, I say you go for drum major. It's your band director's call on whether or not he/she wants to lose your contributions.

Hmm.. If you've got 30 winds, stick to low brass. That's just sickening. Ahaha.
I'm a Drum Major and a trombonist. We have two Drum Majors, and the other is a baritone player. In our show, we switch between playing and conducting, I don't know if it's different for you..

Well, If you really want to keep the trombones in your band, but you want to have authority, try for brass captain. And iColor, Trombones may help just a bit, they are the loudest wind instruments, and have a brighter tone than baritones.

We have 18 winds, 11 brass out of those winds, and 7 low brass out of those brass. 3 trombones, including myself.
