Splish, splash, Samson Colt took a leaping dive off of the 10” high diving board. His body curled up into a tight cannonball as he hit the water, making a small wave that splashed the area around him. Luckily, the local Crystal Pool, was a large swimming complex and had a deep pool especially for diving. No one was in the water around him when Sam hit the water. Of all the areas of the pool that Sam liked best, he adored the diving tower almost as much as the water slides. There was just something exciting about hurling his body through the air and landing into cool water.
Swimming to the edge of the deep pool, Sam latched onto the ladder and climbed out. He shook his body a bit, splashing a few bystanders with his excess. Then he looked around, scanning around of what to do next.

They didn't have a high dive at his pool at home, so being able to go to the local pool was great and not as boring as just swimming back and forth by himself. Luckily there was some kind of fundraiser in one of the nearby buildings, and he'd been able to convince his mother to let him go to the pool instead of follow behind her, bored out of his mind.
At first he didn't know what to do with himself. There wasn't anyone he knew there, or at least he didn't see anyone when he first got there, so Peter looked around as he tried to decide what to do. He could always just swim around, or go down the slides... His attention was soon drawn to the high dive, though, and watched as a familiar looking boy jumped off.
Hey... it was that kid from camp, right...?
"Hey," he called over, dropping his towel onto one of the chairs not being used. "Nice jump," he said, impressed that he'd cannonball in like he did. Most kids their age just jumped off and went feet first. Or at least what he was used to seeing.

After Sam shook the water off his body like a wet dog, he heard the hey. Looking around, he saw a familiar face from the summer. Sam recognized those dimples and auburn hair: Peter. He raised his hand in a wave and meandered over to him. “Thanks.” Sam grinned, but he rubbed his shin with his left foot. Hitting the water like that usually left him a little red.
“What’s up, Peter?” Sam was quick to remember the other boy’s name. How could he forget his cabin mate who was constantly trying to get Internet access on his phone. Eventually, Sam got over the initial annoyance of Peter’s complaining, though he was sure that back in civilization Peter would be more tolerable. At camp, he did have his moments, like the water battle.

"Is this your usual pool?" Peter asked curiously as he looked around at it. It was better than his pool at home. Sure, home was great to be all exclusive and whatever, but he always had more fun when there were other kids around. "That didn't hurt, did it?" he wondered, glancing up at the high dive as if that would answer his question, before turning back to the dark haired boy.
"Mom's busy so I get to stay here for a while," he explained with a shrug. It was nothing surprising. She was always leaving him with babysitters or in some kind of camp when he wasn't in school. She wasn't a bad mom, though. She still went to his ball games and they always had dinner together, so he wasn't complaining. In fact, it was kind of nice to be out of her supervision and constant worrying.
"What are you doing here, Sam?" Other than swimming, of course. Or at least he hoped that had been implied in the question.

Nodding, Sam gave a simple “Yeah” and “nah” respectively to Peter’s questions. Still, he wasn’t eager to rush off to take another dive. A good ol’ chat break was needed before he was going to redden other parts of his skin.
Sam gave Peter a friendly jab in the shoulder. “Hey mine too! Mine’s catering something or other for a while. I get dropped off here every once in a while. Mom thinks it’s hard to get in trouble with a watchful eye.” Sam glanced back to lifeguard’s tower. The lifeguard on duty was scanning the area and blowing her whistle and telling other kids to stop running. “Def’ better than some boring parent thing.”
Sam couldn’t complain about going to boring parent things too much though. It was at one of his mom’s functions were he met ********* and Iris and started his magical journey. Still, with all the drama going on lately, it was nice to be a normal kid like Peter for a day. "Guess you don't come around here too much?"

Peter laughed lightly at the jab to his shoulder, not minding at all. Sam was a year ahead of him, but that didn't mean they couldn't hang out and be awesome middle school friends. Or almost middle school, for him. "Your mom does that too? Drop you off at places?" Well obviously, otherwise he wouldn't be there.
"No, not usually," he quickly answered, moving to the side as a couple older girls made their way past and jumped into the pool. "I have a pool in my backyard, so I usually just swim there, but I don't have a slide or high dive like that," he said, nodding to each as he mentioned them.
He glanced over to the slides then, debating what he wanted to do now that he was there and Sam was there and there were slides and high dives. "Uh, did you already go on the slides? I haven't been here in a while. I think those are new..." Might as well see if Sam wanted to join him, right?

“Sometimes. She caters, so she’s busy lots. Sometimes I go with her, or go places, so get a babysitter.” And if Sam was really lucky, he’d get Lily or be left alone and go out on patrols. Sam shrugged as if he didn’t know exactly how to explain his circumstances.
His eyes widen. “YOU HAVE A POOL?” That was the kind of the thing that impressed Sam. Living in a brownstone townhouse, the Colt’s didn’t have a very large yard. It was more or less a shoebox compared to other kid’s backyards; enough room to kick around a ball but not much beyond that. Having a pool at home would probably be way more fun than here. No fuss lifeguard telling you not to run. Peter made a good point about the slide and high dive though. That settled Sam’s reaction down a bit, slides and dives were part of the fun of pools.
Sam’s expression eased into a grin. “Not yet.” His eyes flashed over to a set of stairs that led up to two slides. One was red, a bit lower; it didn’t have a cover on it. The second was a faintly transparent dark blue tube. The latter side was much higher with several twists and turns. Sam didn’t even wait ask Peter if he wanted to go, he just started nudging Peter then walked along to the steps.

"Ew, me too," Peter said, wrinkling his nose at the thought of being stuck with a babysitter. "Mom does something like that. She organizes events or something like that," he explained, although he would be the first to admit that he didn't really pay attention to what his mom did. All he knew was that she liked talking to a lot of people and sometimes made lots of baked stuff for parties at their house.
He snorted lightly in amusement when Sam reacted to him having a pool, not thinking it was that big a deal. Sure, it was nice to get away from the parents and 'camp' in the pool house with the rest of his Cub Scout group, but really, it wasn't that big a deal.
Of course, when he noticed Sam glancing towards the slides, Peter took the hint and began to head that way as well, as fast as he could without being yelled at by the lifeguard for running.
It was the red slide he went to, first, eyeing the tube a bit suspiciously. He wasn't a huge fan of not being able to see what was going on around him, so being confined inside a slide for who knew how long kind of made his stomach churn, but he didn't say anything to Sam about that. "I'll race you down," he grinned, knowing that the red slide was much shorter and he'd obviously win.

Unlike Peter, Sam automatically went for the other darker slide instead. His eyebrows raised curiously as Peter chose the red slide. Or the baby slide as he thought of it. In reality, there was a real baby slide, in the kiddie wading pool. But to Sam the other slide was clearly superior. It was the slide that most of the teenagers chose to go on, except for some of the silly teen girls. “I guess we could do that. If you’re too scared for this one.”
Sam shrugged and started to leave Peter behind, continuing up the steps to the higher slide.

"I'm not scared!!" he shouted after him, his cheeks suddenly burning. That wasn't fair! Sam couldn't say something like that! And he wasn't afraid! He was just... unsure of what to think of the other one! And it wasn't like he'd never been on a water slide before! He'd been to water parks and things like that! It was just that... it was dark in the other slide!
Peter sputtered in shock and embarrassment as Sam ran off without him, and he quickly scrambled to get up and away from the red slide, trying to catch up to the slightly older boy. He was definitely taller, but it wasn't his fault that he was short!
And although the start of their water adventures had been a bit rocky for Peter, and although he still wasn't all that comfortable with the tube slide, but puffed out his chest and pretended like he wasn't nervous about it at all, the rest of the few hours they'd had to play together was quite fun. Besides, Peter was a much better simmer than he was taking on tube slides. Races across the pool or even playing pool games with the other children was more than what could have been asked.
"Aww... I have to go," he said to his friend as he heard his mother calling for him by the entrance, wading his way to the ladder. "I'll see you around, okay?" he chirped cheerfully as he got out, waving to Sam as he collected his towel and shoes. He definitely wouldn't mind hanging out with the other boy again.

Sam wasn’t too surprised to find Peter come up behind him on the slide. What young boy could resist a backhanded challenge like being called scared? Very few. He was happy about it though. With Peter, rushing down the slide and screaming the whole way down could be that much more fun.
The rest of the afternoon went by in a blink. Time really does fly when your having fun, and before Sam knew it, his buddy was being collected. “I’m sure of it.”
Sam wasn’t sure because the odds of running into Peter at school was high, but because it was likely Sam would make sure to see Peter again. Even if he was a grade under, he could always use another friend his age.
Not far behind was Sam’s own mother coming to fetch him. Pulling his pruney body out of the water, he collected his own things. When he met his mother, he gabbed a bit about his new friend.
