My band (I'm pretty sure most bands) likes to emphasize the importance of mouthpiece practicing and embechoure. So naturally, with a crappy mouthpiece (that I'm saving up for because my parents don't get why I need to upgrade horns/mouthpieces) and braces, I practice with it as much as I can without totally ruining my lips. There's my grandma who always tends to pop up at bad times and NEVER leaves the house. When she came today, I was practicing with my mouthpiece, in the middle of an exercise, and she comes up to me and just starts to talk to me. If I don't keep it set until the end of an exercise, it won't be really effective, so I keep going until my mom pulls my mouthpiece out from me and yells in my face about having to respect my grandma when she doesn't understand or even respect me/my technique enough to let me finish when I was ALMOST DONE with my exercise. Have you ever gotten in trouble with someone who doesn't understand the concept of practicing?

Well...not really, hahah. My parents actually prefer if I practice, since it takes me away from the computer and stuff.
But I'm curious. Did you give any sort of indication that you just wanted to finish up, like holding up your hand in a 'wait' gesture or looking at them to show you acknowledged them?

I looked up at them, but later my mom yelled at me for not looking.

I play trumpet (which as you all should know is pretty loud) and I only practice at school or when nobody's home. My family is like 'Stop, it's too loud' and I can't quiet down so easily. I need a mute because quietly playing the trumpet can be hard and I don't know if I'm getting better because it just doesn't work out. *sigh*

But I also play electric guitar so..

I play clarinet, and my sister always gets mad at me when I practice. she will turn her music up really loud to drown me out so I have to play even louder just to hear myself. She yells at me if I work on stuff involving high notes. So, I usually practice when nobody is home, unless I absolutely have to(like today, when I had to try and get one last part of our opener memorized and the entire second part of our show memorized)

Zarlis I just chipped my sax mouth piece the other day. and needless to say, my parents were not happy when they heard how much my new one costed. burning_eyes That happened to me with my clari mouthpiece...I had to settle for a $20 replacement one the store sold for that purpose...(I blame it for my recent squeaking problems...) I was kinda happy when my old one broke because I thought I could get a better one...I was wrong...

I'm encouraged to practice because 1. it gets me away from the computer and video games 2. If I get good enough, I can get good scholarships! 3.My mom was always yelled at for practicing when she was younger because she made mistakes (my grand mother could sight read near perfect) and my grand mother most likely didn't want her kid to be better than her, my grand mom was a very spiteful person. So she encourages me to because she was discouraged, also it makes her want to practice more so I don't get better than her haha, I won't for a long time though!

My parents understood when my mouthpiece fell and broke. I had no choice but to get a new one.

i play Tuba/Sousaphone. I never practice at home. I got during lunch, before and after school, and sometimes weekends. But when I DO take it home, my mom loves listening to me.
AND I have braces. But i think im a good Tuba player. I mean, it doesnt help to have an older brother and sister who played it. And was always first chair. :3

With bellfront instruments, all you have to do is find something like an old t shirt or a towel and place it in the bell (but not completely). This way, it kinda mutes the sound and allows you to effectively play, except for instruments like trombone that need you to support them when you play. I play Euphonium, and find this very helpful.

My mom always gets annoyed at me when I pick up the clarinet and start to play because "it's not homework!" I just blast a high note and she goes away, though sometimes that results in her hiding it away until I need it again...
