I'm sure we've all heard a ton of no-no's in witchcraft and similar practices. They range from the simple, "You shouldn't give yourself a card reading" (which is more debatable), to "Never ever use a ouija board" (which is more commonly excepted as the truth).

I thought this would be a good place to discuss them:
What are some that you've heard? What do you think of them? Are there any that you feel particularly strong about? Are there any that you pay particular attention to?

A couple of other examples that come to mind are casting a positive spell without consent, and blowing out candles (versus snuffing them out).

"Never ever use a ouija board" (which is more commonly excepted as the truth).

That isn't entirely true. Although the board does rely on a spirit's guidance to work (and usually isn't too picky as to what spirit it uses). There are people who have learned to use this tool safely. I myself don't but I know of people who do. So "Never ever" is a little too far, more accurately "exercise heavy caution".

One I have heard and consider to be good advise is: "do a divination before any large magical work". This usually is: "is it the best thing to do" or , "can I, should I, may I". I think it is good advise because, it helps to account for ourselves only seeing a part of the picture.

Ok you know that old " If you spill salt, through it over your shoulder." I fallow this one, I even through it over the right shoulder, which is the Left one. It is thought that when you spill the salt you leave your self vulnerable to evil/the devil/or just plain bad luck and who wants that? So you through salt to banish or bind the evil/devil/bad luck/ mean fairies, what have you, so that you can clean up the mess without them getting you when your vulnerable.

Never ever mess with fairy folk.

Never EVER disrespect the dead. Also never ask when or how you're going to die.

Those are two I hear of often.

As for never giving yourself a card reading- I've been scolded for this one by a "professional" reader and a few others... but I can't get readings that are nearly as accurate as mine are.. Part of it is I have a really hard to read energy...

This is VERY interesting to me as it's one that I've never actually heard before. In fact, I often hear exactly the opposite- the best person to give you a reading IS yourself.

From what I have always been taught, the Tarot is a focusing tool- it helps you to get past your prejudices or consider things you wouldn't have otherwise. Why would you expect this to work better if someone else is suggesting it to you?

Of course, this is a simplification (and a 'scientification') of the Tarot, but still... I certainly wouldn't consider it to be a problem.

As for the Ouiji board... Simply put, it's a tool. If you go into it believing certain things, you're more likely to get that out of it. It's just like anything else we use, no more inherently dangerous than an Athame and a Chalice.

Tarrien - I agree with the never disrespect the dead. Even worse, don't disrespect the living who loved those who are gone and grieve for them. (I'm looking at you, Westboro Baptist Church.)

From what I've been told by other readers, basically you "read" what you want to read about yourself. Rather, you're more inclined to be either more positive or negative because of the mood you may be in. Such as a reading on love you may read more into the cards or manipulate the answers to your wants.

>_> I also agree with the last sentiment.

Ah, Isee what you mean there.

I think you'd be most likely to get into that problem if you start asking the wrong kinds of questions-- for example;

"Does John love me?"
versus..

"How do I feel about John?"

The first one, you're asking the cards to tell you something about another person who isn't there. The second question is a lot more useful -- it does (or should) force you to look into yourself to determine your own feelings, and actually confront the roots of those emotions instead of just the surface of it.
