One battle fought. One battle survived.
And yet the old hyena's thirst for the fight had not been slaked. She bounded through the chaos, her eyes lit with that same, disconcerting madness. As always, they flickered madly about her, barely touching on something before dancing on to the next.
Around her lions and hyenas fought and fell and died. She could taste the tang of blood on the air, feel it crackle through her fur as she ran. The rush of adrenaline had blocked out any pain from the wounds she had sustained from her first battle and she was ready for more. Nothing seemed to frighten or falter her. And, to look at her was to see a hyena who was quite prepared to fight until she dropped. Of course, to drop here would be to die. But did she care about that, either? Did she really fear death?
Perhaps not. The female was certainly older than a lot of the hyenas here, the greying and faded pelt more than a sign of the years she had behind her. To go out in a blaze of glory would be a thing of beauty for her.
Or...maybe not. Maybe it was just that she had such incredible faith in their victory, in her visions, that she thought herself untouchable. And, in truth, the latter was more likely. She absorbed herself in her world of visions, allowing them to guide her whether they were true or not. She had seen this war. She had seen the hyenas fight victorious and she had such incredible faith that she would be there, too.
And so she ran, dodging around other who were fighting, actively seeking her next opponent.

Angavu had already been in the fray for some time, cutting her last fight short when she chose to run when she spotted so many personally familiar faces around her. She saw at least one niece and one nephew.. and then she saw her grandmother- someone who should have been nowhere near any of the fighting.. but it had been too late to help her. She didn't know who had finished her off but now she went around with revenge on her mind.
She walked a twisted path through the other fights, trying to keep an eye out for any lions who needed help but mostly looking for a hyena who was not fighting and not paying attention. And then she spotted Zimwi, looking like she was on a mission, darting through the crowds.
Growling, she moved forward to intercept her.

For all her erratic glances, Zimwi did not realise she had been noticed until it was too late. The shape of a golden lioness seemed to appear out of thin air, the larger body moving to block her way from getting deeper into the heart of battle.
She tried to slide to a halt but, going at such speed, a hasty stop was almost impossible. She slid in the grass, clouding dust, her body twisting sharply to avoid colliding into the lioness. She was all for running headlong into battle, but not like this! Not without a good pounce behind her. Images of crashing into the female and getting hooked by those vicious claws were enough to even have Zimwi backing up to rethink her strategy. Her twisting motion had her crashing onto her side and there was a brief moment of wild flailing as she tried to right herself. And, whilst her claws were all but useless when compared to a feline's, her powerful jaws snapped at the air as she tried to get herself into a more defence-able position.
To say that she was furious about being taken by surprise was...quite the understatement.

Her reaction time was not as great as it normally might have been if she were fresh into battle and not so full of so many different emotions as the battle raged around them- she watched with narrowed, angry eyes as Zimwi stumbled and flailed. As the hyena snapped and attempted to right herself, Anga finally moved in. She pounced from the short distance before Zimwi, careful not to put her head anywhere near the hyena's sharp teeth but not so worried about aiming a paw for her face, claws extended.

The paw landed a glancing blow that brought a pinch of tears to her eyes and momentarily stilled her anger. The surprise and the brief but incredibly sharp pain that came with the strike was only brief, but it had clearly taken her unawares. A slither of blood drew a raging line down her snout from where Angavu's claws had caught her.
With a thunderous growl, she finally managed to flip herself up onto her paws and, with no hesitation, launched herself straight at the lioness. Unforuntately, still a little unsteady with her footing, her leap was not as well-aimed or strong as it could have been.
But her teeth snapped hopefully.

Off balance from a failed lunge but a successful hit with her paw, she landed awkwardly on her three free legs and continued to wave her claws wherever the hyena might be-- but her movements weren't very coordinated until Zimwi came flying at her and her paw went right for the face again. This time her claws met teeth. Anga felt the teeth dig into her paw and pulled back reflexively, though it wasn't strong enough to truly be effective.
Between Zimwi's poor balance and aim, and Anga having size on her side.. and considering the hyena now had her paw between her teeth, it went about as well as the lioness could have hoped. Leaning back, she held up her other paw and attempted to push Zimwi away- regardless of how her paw was currently as good as attached to Zimwi.

Success!
No...wait. Maybe biting down on a paw wasn't such a great idea...especially not that of a large carnivore with those blasted, sharp claws.
Even as Zimwi's jaws closed down on the limb, she felt those hooks pierce into the tender flesh in her mouth. She tried to ignore it, tried to block it out and focus on hanging on. Maybe if she backed up and jerked her head she could pull the lioness of balance and end her with a nice savage bite to the throat. But even as she considered such bloodthirsty actions, her bite tightened and those claws sank deeper. Blood filled her mouth; her own blood, and a second later she was forced to release her hold, yelping and shaking her mouth. Pink saliva now gathered around her mouth - adding to her somewhat frenzied look - and then she was hit by the other paw: straight across the face.
She blinked, looking dazed and, staggering a little, it took her a good moment for her to regain her bearings, giving the lioness an opportunity to make another attack.

Angavu snarled as Zimwi tightened her grip on her paw, her claws reaching out as far as she could get them and digging in as deep as she could manage. She was caught by surprise when her shove resulted in her release from the hyena's jaws but she wasted no time backing up a couple steps, shaking her bloody paw.
She watched Zimwi stagger but came to her senses before the hyena had the chance. Ignoring the pain in her paw as it pressed against the ground, she steadied herself, shifted her weight back and lunged forward, teeth bared.

Zimwi saw the golden lioness leap and reared up to meet it, perhaps thinking to get good purchase around her throat as she lunged. Unfortunately, things did not go quite according to plan and Angavu's lunge had her roiling backwards - the breath knocked out of her.
Instead of fighting it, she let herself fall backwards, rolling on an arched spine and bringing up her hind legs to shove against the lioness' underside and, in by doing so, to try and flip her off and away.

She had size on her side but not balance or her hurt paw. While Angavu was not thrown off of the hyena, she was forced away just enough to allow her the opportunity to escape-- but it wasn't going to happen easily, Angavu felt there was an opening and she flailed a bit in an effort to make it harder- or at least more painful- to get away.

She felt the tear of claws in her fur and, with a wild yowling. The little beast! She was going to regret that. Zimwi was going to make sure of it.
Her hind-leg took a bit of persuasion to take hold on the ground but, within a moment of being free, the greying hyena had whipped back to lunge straight at the golden lioness, teeth snapping maniacally as they sought to catch hold of the larger predator.
She might have size on her side but Zimwi had power in those old jaws of hers. Neither did she seem to pay any mind to the wounds flowing with blood down her flanks and side.

Anga roared in pain and surprise as the hyena lunged and got a forceful hold on her neck with sharp teeth. Her fur was thick but it was only luck that Zimwi didn't have a hold on anywhere potentially fatal-- and there was no reason she couldn't make the easy move to the throat.
"Get off!" she growled, bucking in an attempt to throw Zimwi off before she could really injure her.

She felt her grip slide as the lioness bucked, the motion jerking her neck and sending streams of pain down the length of her spine. She growled fiercely, but even she could not keep up this attempt for much longer, she who was driven by blood-lust. She felt her teeth lose purchase, though she clung on as if for dear life. A little voice in the back of her head warned her of the pain that would come if she fell and hit the ground.
And then, out of the chaos, another Pridelander leapt.

It was Lutalo.
He'd managed to escape a battle so far, leaping through the masses with evasive bounds as he sought a glimpse of a golden lioness. He had found one but it was not the particular golden one he was after. He sought Amari's mate; Maawio. Not this pretty female. However, this one looked to be in immediate trouble and if he didn't stop, he was worried that she might not be so pretty after this day was done. Certainly that would be a terrible thing!
And so, with nothing more than a determined expression, Lutalo closed the gap between him and the hyena and, without thinking, grabbed the hyena by the back of the neck and sunk his teeth into flesh.
Zimwi's reaction was instant. Her jaws released the golden fur and snapped around to attack the one who threatened to crush her spine. The twisting motion carved deep gouges into her flesh and then her jaws tried to find his neck; her teeth sinking into the thick mane; seeking flesh.

Unable to believe the precarious situation she now had herself in when facing just one rather old looking hyena, Angavu was struggling to respond beyond her bucking attempts to free herself from Zimwi's jaws. Blood streaked her neck now, though it was fortunately very minimal considering the damage that could be done very quickly.. and then someone came to her rescue. It was a familiar flash of colors, though actually an unfamiliar face -- and then she was free.
Standing shakily, she hesitated a few seconds to steady herself and get a grasp of what was happening. Everything came back into focus very quickly as she saw Zimwi twist around and have a go at the other lion's neck. He had a mane and so was not in as much immediate danger but now the hyena was outnumbered by two much larger creatures.
Lutalo had her by the neck but his grip was loosened where she twisted around. Hoping to prevent such a thing happening to her if she was successful, Angavu leapt forward and aimed for Zimwi's neck by the base of her ears. If she could pull her off there, her teeth would not be such a threat-- but that left the rest of the body.

Lutalo felt his teeth slide through fur and flesh as the hyena turned on him and then a pressue at his neck - which made him thankful for his protective mane. He hadn't realised, until that moment, how much more vulnerable females could be in battle without all the extra weight around their neck to protect their throats from such incidences.
And then the golden lioness was coming to his aid again and the hyena went berserk, twisting and writhing to avoid her spine being severed by powerful teeth.
The motion twisted the fur on his neck hard and suddenly she was free, spitting great tufts of his mane as she frothed and stared at them wild-eyed. She was bleeding badly by now; a new set of scars to add to her growing collection, no doubt.
She sputtered, raging, pacing back and forth, but even in her battle haze she knew she could not fight to hope two lions and win. Her eyes rolled to try and see if any other hyena was there to aid her. But unfortunately she looked very much alone.
Alone.
And the hyenas who still fought didn't look like they were faring so well.
Lutalo, drawing closer in an effort to look intimidating - despite the fact that his legs were quaking - gave a low growl.
And in that moment, Zimwi fled.
The male lion released a breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding and gave a trembling laugh. "That was...lucky. I think." His eyes darted across to Angavu. "Thanks for jumping in there."
