Deaths in Hainaut
In the winter of 910, just months before the election of the King, the count of Hainaut and his heir died from an illness. Things were quiet until Ralph showed interest in participating in the council to help electing a new king and asking for his favor.
As the months passed, the count's court flooded with rumors about the obvious reasons Ralph had to kill his family. Ralph's mother, afraid of what could happen, knowing how much the courtiers liked her husband, fled, leaving her son to solve everything by himself.
The rumors continued, everyone knew Ralph was neglected in favor of his older brother his whole life, and had no reason to like either of them. His personality, quiet and reserved, did not help either, and the fact that his parents neglected his education made things worse.
He spent his life watching his father and brother attentively, and he knew them very well. So why would he waste such opportunity of obtaining a title?
